Hey.
I don't know if you guys ever visit SelectButton, but I wanted to tell you about a fundraiser for one of their members - bleak - who is trying to get to Detroit from California after the airline messed up his flight.
Basically the guy is poor and unemployed, has no family to support him and literally put his last money into this plane ticket. The fundraiser page is sort of ambiguous about his situation, but apparently he's had to steal food from the store over the past few days to get by.
If anyone feels like pitching in with $20, here's the website: http://www.indiegogo.com/get-bleak-to-detroit (http://www.indiegogo.com/get-bleak-to-detroit).
NOTE: This is the internet, so donate at your own risk. I'm personally going to do it because I feel for the guy, but don't donate money you can't afford to lose.
If anyone wants to talk to the guy before donating, he's usually on IRC (same network as #saltw).
Thanks.

Nice to see that Drule has a heart, hehe. Philantrophy for the win!
-
why is he going all the way to Detroit with nothing?

Also yeah it's borderline irresponsible to do this sort of thing without any kind of financial backup. I mean what about parents or friends wiring him money? How could he possibly have to resort to stealing food to survive?
-
nobody deserves to go to detroit.
-
by not donating you are helping this man
-
huh I've got no money or means to support myself... better blow everything I have on a plane ticket!
also IDK if I believe this dude, I'm a regular flight-misser and what happens is that you get there and they put you on standby for the next available seat. He's got absolutely no money or anybody to ask, yet he's able to see several doctors that can't agree about his "emotional issues"(really poor people don't have insurance to see mental health professionals). yeah sure i'll give this internet guy a bunch of money *steps over homeless people sleeping in the street on my way home*

I think it would be more feasible to set up a carpool for him short distance by short distance with gamer-provided couchsurfing and some sort of web-based tracking system with GPS documenting his progress across the country. the ad revenue alone would be enough to cover his return ticket or secure a room for a little while (he says he's got a place to stay but I don't believe him)
no wait I meant to post http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SfMhoG0AfnQ&search=chrysler+slim+shady

yeah I am SW's resident Detroiter and I'm just sayin' that he's better off staying in California...

Ya I asked him this and apparently they offered a reseat for a "modest fee" that he couldn't afford, and the doctor thing was from six years ago when he was under his parents insurance plan.
But yeah, I'm not asking you to blindly buy into this or anything. I just feel really bad for the guy based on what I've seen him say on IRC and I know that if I was in his situation and couldn't afford food or rent I'd appreciate if a stranger helped me.
-
IDK he prob. really needs help and all but really this whole story just sounds more like someone being a bonehead and panhandling online rather than someone who is at rock-bottom and gonna die on the streets at night during the winter

Is Detroit as bad as they make it out to be?

have a heart joe. he's already had his private couriers send his mercedes to detroit. he just doesn't have the cash on him without selling some of his google stocks.
-
sounds like someone needs 500 bucks to buy chrono trigger ports to me

there are some alright parts, and the suburbs are a little more depressing version of those throughout the country... There's just a ton of abandoned shit everywhere, almost no jobs, and more people get murdered there every year than any other place in the USA.

So if you wanna play Fallout 3 for real, go there.
-
why do people try to move long distances without any savings in the first place???
if this was literally the last of his money what was he gonna do when he got to detroit?? he says he has "jobs and places to stay lined up" but that just sounds like he's going to be crashing at friends places and he's browsed the local want ads a few times. so basically he's going to go to detroit where he'll have to continue to steal food to live there.
-
if he really needs to STEAL food, why doesn't he just apply for food stamps? I know quite a bit of people who get EBT cards and it's a good 200 bucks a month for food.
-
POOR DECISION MAKING POOR DECISION MAKING
-
he's lying no one in detroit has a job lined up
-
detroit is pretty much the worst city on earth.

I asked him this and he told me he already applied for food stamps in two states and that they won't give him any more.
Also, he made the fundraiser on everyone else's request and he's never really advertised it aside from writing the explanation on the website, so I think it's somewhat safe to help the guy out.
-
I'm currently fighting for money myself so there's a treshold for me to do so?! I really don't know where i'm going to fund my own life right now but i hope i'll figure that out in the nearby future.
nevertheless, if/is nobodys gonna help him...?!?
-
I'd rather donate $20 to the Ramci's Starting Life Fund
-
I'd rather keep all my money to myself in a big matress and say in my will that i should be cremated with the matress as a pyre as is the custom in scotland am I right jamie sime
nope. not right.
-
i could use some money for weed, anyone wanna help a bro out
