Title: Bring me up to speed, I'm torn with curiosity
Post by: bastarrd on April 28, 2011, 05:01:58 am
I used to be a huge GW lurker/member like 10 years ago when I was like 13 (and most of you motherfuckers were, too). In fact, 13 used to be a magical age/horrendous insult 'round these parts. Is that still going!? Oh man, the tradition! Anyway, I was here way before Grindie or Chainer (dropping the popular art names, I used to hang around the Art/Literature/Roleplaying forums), in the Second or Third Reign of Comm1 (not first, I'm not that old). I was here during the revival of Guylock too, but far after the whole SHITABEAR stuff you old motherfuckers rocked your cocks to. Um, 4Dsheep, or something along those lines. I remember her, she was awesome. Dr. Funk, holy shit. Legendary. Dragonslayer, or something like that. He was very nice, I remember him fondly, that rosy-cheeked little sassafrass.

There was a guy in the roleplaying forums...I think his username was Krinsdeath? He was an AMAZING writer. Loved the Eye of Horus. Then there was Hundley, who I always secretly thought looked like that old avatar of his, which was cool. Something...Paladin? I remember him too. Bartek, of course. Never really liked him, I don't remember why. Morrison either, though I'm pretty sure he's still around. He was very snarky and that wasn't really my style, but he never said anything to me. Then again, I never said anything to him.

Abraxa. What a nutcase. Loved every bit about this individual. I remember his Sadistic Gardens shit got on SA and we were all so proud of him.

I remember when Mr. D arrived too. And the art battles. He had that art battle with, uhh...something like Ptera, I can't really remember. He made it a notch too personal, and it put him under a bit of fire from the rest of the members. Though, I did find out about Milli Vanilli from that thread. Not that that's important in any way, I'm just saying. I learned something.

Hmm...I remember Grindie's Satanic apprentice. Also started with a G, I think...he liked goat-demons. Not sheep, though...

I just saw Faust scrolling through the threads. He's still here, god damn. I remember he used to look like Avril and you guys loved it. Did that change? Please say no.

Lots of shit went down here. This used to be a very addictive site to me. So how much has changed since way then?

EDIT: Markus or whatever. He was THE black guy back in the day. I'm quite sure he's still around. I vaguely remember him starting a job at Toys R Us and loving it? But that wasn't even way way back, I don't think.

Haha, fuckin' Peewee or whatever he was initially called. I forget. I made a post about tricking a lesbian on Yahoo chat into cybersex, only to be cyber-ravaged and slightly disturbed by the aftermath and he found this HOLLARIOUS. He quoted it all up in the quotey thang. I was very flattered.

I also remember that Randomfellow guy, or however he spelled it. What was it he used to always say..."If'n"?

Just as a time reference, I was here when RM2K was the shit, RM2K3 what the shit's shit and RMXP didn't exist. When you guys found out about Ruby, y'all screamed witchcraft.

I'll be punching that edit button a couple more times; my bag of nostalgia is bursting at the seams. Memories are hella flooding, doggies.

He was a valiant man, with angelic locks of feather-light hair that whipped gracefully in the slightest breeze. I used to beckon him over to windows just to see this phenomenon. And he'd always moan ("Auummmm, ahhh!") as the wind caressed him. He was very captivating, like a lion giving birth.

Well, most people left on their own accord, more specifically:
Grindie
Chainer
4Dsheep
Abraxa
Moriason
Krinsdeath
Mr. D
Randomfellow
Marcus

The following were banned (I think) for various reasons:
Comm1
Dr. Funk

And the following were scared away (again, correct me if I'm wrong):
Guylock
PitchWhite

Bartek, Faust and DragonSlayer still come here, SteelPaladin died of cancer some time ago and as for the rest of the guys I either don't know who they are or I don't know why they left.

Anyway welcome back.

i thought Ghost_Aspergers was Chainer. i had to look up one of his posts because I always mentally replace his name with Chainer. maybe i got confused.

also what happened to Evil Bob. i remember he used to be my favourite guy back when i only lurked.

Ya you're right, though I didn't think he was that active. I guess I'll strike him from the list.

Steel DIED?

Holy fuck. My deepest condolences...that is some gnarly shit. :(

Wow.

Was your name always Drule? I seem to only recall it since I joined up with this account, but maybe my memory is just bleeding through.

Oh, and thank you for that awesome summary! Why was Peewee scared off, I always thought he reveled in these forums more than most others. And do you remember that Satanic fella I was talking about? He wasn't edgy or anything, just claimed to follow Satanism, but otherwise a very mild person. Funny guy, liked to draw. Bit of a budding philosopher. His name (or lack thereof) will bother me if it doesn't click and I wanna sleep tonight...

There was also a guy that, I think, used to make avatars and banners for people. I think DragonSlayer did it too, along with sigs. In fact, I definitely remember people requesting sigs from DragonSlayer and this other individual in particular. Or maybe I'm just trippin' again.

Oh, and isn't Marcus still around?

He left because Chef cybered him and everyone teased him about it, as well as because he was overweight (though he became thin at a later point).

I don't know who Grindie's satanic apprentice is unless you're referring to KnifeH or Bisse which he used to do some projects with, and they both left.

Also yes I've always been called Drule.

Ah...then I must just associate you with this "era" cuz, well, you're still here. Thanks for the help thus far, it's neat to get these dusty cogs turnin'. Who knows what other shit I remember. God forbid I get assaulted by some suppressed memories and wake up in the fetal position in my neighbour's house with lipstick all over my face.

I think I remember DDay and Kaworu...DDay by name, I think I remember you starting out...and I apologize if this is uncalled for, but when I think of Kaworu, I think gay transformers. Is this accurate?

And I remember Atari. I was gonna mention him, but I wasn't sure if that name was from this forum...in fact, Atari, didn't YOU do sig and avatars requests for people along with DragonSlayer.

Faust, I'm sure you're still as graceful and lithe as a rolling dew drop.

Definitely sounds like Dr. Funk. Last of his hijinx I remember is him sneaking back into GW after some absence and posting a map that, when you tilt the screen, secretly spells out Dr. Funk in the corner. That's it. After that, he just re-re-re-re-re-re-disappeared.

SHIT! I can't believe I forgot! What happened to Mr. Y? I remember he had the coolest username after 4DSheep inadvertently informed me it actually stands for "mystery". My mind was most sensuously blown by this imposed revelation.
Though, I may or may not recall him possibly leaving even before I left GW...still, the guy was definitely a mr. y.

You know who else I remember? Death Jester (or DeathJester, or w/e). If I'm not mistaken, he was the closest thing to the resident asshole around here. Again, never did anything to me, but he was crazy fiesty. Like a jungle cat. Never made a single joke. Lots of death threats, though. Shoulda been just...Death. (I'm kidding, probably.)

There was a guy WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY back when. See, before my LAST account, I had my FIRST account. A week long failure of an internet identity that, in all honesty, shouldn't have even existed. I was like seriously 12. I pissed off a guy called Very Old Man or something. FIRST MEMBER I INTERACTED WITH. He tore me a new one, then Abraxa did too. Then I came BACK and they were nice and I was very tippy-toe-ish for YEARS until I stopped caring and made a dumb poll. Bart suspeded my account for a day or so and I just never bothered to come back. It was...time.

It's weird, man. This website had Reddit's traffic back then. The competition was intense, 200+ users online, easily, day to day. Fuck man.

With all due respect, what happened? But I guess I can ask myself that, too. :(

Sorry guys...and seriously, I'm still shocked over Paladin. Brutal. :( :( :(

UPRC, I vaguely remember a name like yours...as in a 4-letter abbreviation or something along those lines, but I can't attest to that. Is this the name/4 letter combo you always used?

P.S. You think Grindie's Boiler Room is still up? :P

what happened was that a new version of gw was supposed to be in development but it was never finished despite the staff being shuffled many times and different people trying to get things done. it's really because the core userbase of gw grew out of game making or at least rpg maker and gw didn't really have any focus anymore. there was lack of motivation to get work done on the new site because no one really had any idea what it should and would be plus gw didn't really have many members who had the skills to get it done. eventually the rpg maker crowd got alienated and most of them left over the years to other rpg maker communities.

basically a lot of passivity over a very long period of time is what really brought gw down to the point i believe there's probably not really saving it anymore especially since most people here are adults now and too busy to dedicate enough time to get things rolling again.

and hi im dragon slayer

edit: and to clarify there was no old site up when the new one was in development. so that means we had no site for like 4 years. that does wonders!

i get the feeling that the only reason why this site even still exists and people still come here is because we just look at the days gone by too fondly and need some constant nostalgia kick to get through the day. there's not really much to offer here any more. some of the same old faces, not too many new ones. a little bit of interaction, but nothing too engaging. it's a ghost site, feeding off of old memories rather than making new ones.

Or maybe that there's no reason for it NOT to exist? IRC is pretty much as active as I remember it and seems to be more of the focus for this place now, the forums being an addition (everything needs a forum!!!)

Anyway, how can you remember things TOO fondly? That's like something being too tasty, or having too much of a good time!

Yeah, the guy you're thinking of is imaek. imaek's first name was TheMOLE, then superoldman, then imaekphp. He's the reason I joined this site! I was in some chatroom in 2003 and he kept saying "hi mom" every 5 minutes and I thought it was really funny so I started talking to him. He introduced me to targ like cupcakes and through that I joined GW. He was a seriously funny dude - way, way ahead of his time. He operated on a different level. All of the Targers were exceptionally funny and creative dudes, but imaek achieved this mastery that I think only Hundley and Diggity paralleled (and in different ways). I'm only now beginning to understand the depth and subtlety of a lot of the stuff he did back in 05 or 06.

The dude was an actual genius.

A long time ago in a galaxy far far away, someone on GW had this in his sig:

Quote
Art is not, and has never been, subjective.

"Art is subjective" is usually a term used to justify the insufficient pedagogical practices of self righteous dredges who believe themselves true artists despite their complete disregard for the principles of effective design...

Saying that art is in the eye of the viewer is nothing more than self-interested postmodernist bullshit requiring a concerted ignorance of the history and legacy of artistic achievement.

Where is this from? ??? I am dying of curiosity

So IRC is still rocking, eh? Wonderful news.

And that's a mighty fuckin' quote. I remember you guys having a bit of a postmodern joke running around here. I swear, you guys are the only site ever to drop that term on an average basis.

Didn't Steel constantly consider himself labeled "postmodern". I'm not sure if he was for/against it, but he kept bringing it up when it became a "thing". That was nearing the time when I left, during the last wrap of my GW adventures.

It was all during the Whahay backup name era...when did you guys adopt "Salt" and why?

I have no idea as I wasn't IN on the salt thing, but I do claim credit for (and terribly miss) WHAHAY.

Also YES come and join us on IRC, the room has a fair few users still and there's usually at least SOME conversation going on. It's like a random selection of users from 2001 - present, so it is fun for the whole family.

Agreed. Don't put a dog down just because it's old. This place doesn't have rabies yet...just wait til the pornbots 2.0 invade before you drag Salty behind the shed.

I'm sure someone somewhere adores this site to bits and pieces regardless of what it's like. Really, just not seeing the old GW theme tugs at my heart; if the WHOLE community disappeared, it wouldn't feel right at all. Just seeing you older folks warms my cockles, and the people I've met since I re-joined are fantastic. In fact, this forum is MUCH friendlier, but that's probably because it's nowhere near as busy.

For those who weren't here during the zenith, IT WAS FUCKING RIDICULOUS. In every way. This was a second home to a fucking colony of nerds and it was fabulous, though we had assholes growing off the fuckin' trees. But we also had everything else.

To this day, I have a mild suspicion that GW paved the way for SOME nerdy communities. I know SA was the shit and a half back then, but it never, ever interested me. Yet I had trouble staying off GW the same way people have trouble staying off Reddit these days.

I visited Art and Lit for inspiration and tips from other artists.

I visited Roleplaying to flex my brain a little.

I visited General for updates on wtf is 'gwan on. I was like the first guy in my town to know about that armored bulldozer war-machine that rampaged a few years back, and it was all because of GW. I was like the information station, yo.

And of course...THE CRAP SHACK. Nothing better than the Crap Shack. Nothing.

NOTHING.

Hahaha, there's that clueless, bespectacled face I missed so dearly.

And Reddit is cool, but the community is pointless. People love it, I think it's a clusterfuck. It's one thing to rock 200 members, that's a fucking giant crowd, but Reddit is just a million-member mess.

But some people revel in it and who am I to judge? I'll go there to scoop up news or funny pics, maybe some titties, and I'm on my merry way. I don't talk or make eye contact, and topics I've posted aren't generally responded to. Not downvoted, not upvoted. Just there.

But I was never down with upvotes, really, I hate "ratings" and stuff that inevitably turn a community competitive, and Redditors essentially live and breathe orange arrows. I posted a few topics and realize you're just standing there hoping your shit will be seen by the right people and upvoted into internet fame. And that kinda turned me off. I hate the 1-10 concept, pluses and minuses, yes and no, hot or not. Fuck that. I don't see what it accomplishes other than dragging it to the front page, and most of those posts are cats or stale meme comics. Cats are not funny to me, and the rest is incredibly hit-and-miss. So "upboating" doesn't really strike me as a useful feature, especially in a community so diverse.

Reddit is fantastic, but being a Redditor is not my cup of tea. Maybe I'm just bitter, or not cut out for big crowds. All I know is I can do without.

I don't think we need a GW subreddit...we have GW. It'd be a community within a comunity, so it's a little redundant. If people don't wanna come here, they won't wanna go there. And if they do, chances are they won't stay unless they know about us. And if they do know about us, then chances are they're already signed up here.
But...it'd be interesting to try! Just careful Reddit doesn't seduce away the rest of your members and GW slowly dissolves among all the other subreddits.

I disagree with vellfire on the basis that IRC is exclusively for decreasing its users mental functioning capacity. try logging in to IRC every day without even checking the forums, you'll stagnate and go braindead without even realizing it

then you're talking to the wrong people on irc

maybe. but actually I always hated instant messengers and chat rooms

irc has to be a product of habit too tho. find a more backwards and cumbersome method of communication still used on the internet today

irc is how I found out that dragonx and I go to the same school.

Anyway, I'd hate to see saltw die. Although I never directly participated in any major way, I enjoyed the creativity flowing through this forum. If we produce more content in general, I'm sure we'd attract more talent and with it interesting people. I just realized that finished games and music go in the advertising section. Perhaps if we had finished products front and centre rather than stuffed into sub-forums we could get some more activity there, but what do I know, I just found out about its existence and it could be bustling with activity that I haven't picked up yet. I also remember some community events/activities that would be held in the past. There just doesn't seem to be as much to get involved with as there used to be.

Any time I've been on IRC lately it seems pretty dead. Not even close to the level of activity it had when there were 60-100 people in the channel and conversation going literally 24/7.

i prefer irc to most im programs but is is kind of outdated and someone needs to write a new RFC that takes into account changes in the internet since the irc RFC was written. maybe someone already did. might research and report back. wrt the gw irc channel, it's like twitter but faster, less public, and largely about politics, pokemon and vellfire's dog.

you design websites, right? think of the whole process it takes someone new to log in to irc, get to the chat they want, and use it effectively. it's convoluted and outdated, you're just used to it. well NATURALLY you add the network server to the mIRC network list, who would expect anything different?

On that mibbit browser irc client you have to type in "irc.esper.net", "#saltw", "earlchip" and press go. I dunno how much easier it can be. Maybe I'll write a tut, watch this space

click http://chat.mibbit.com/?server=irc.esper.net&channel=%23saltw (http://chat.mibbit.com/?server=irc.esper.net&channel=%23saltw) woop

irc is a protocol, not a user interface. it's starting to be conducive to poor UI design but it's not completely defunct. the interfaces available represents the sympathies of those that use it.

I actually keep up with GW people through the forums. I get their thoughts and sometimes posts about their lives. I barely use irc at all. It's useful when trying to check a small group of people, sometimes faster to check single personel than through msn or fb due to highlighting.

I don't really find IRC good since it's active-messaging in style of IM but instead you are either constantly present or absent. There is no way to know who are present and who are not, unless type in whois/member info. Since it's active messaging in a public space on top of it - sometimes with a pressure for group messaging/accesible quality of topics - it really restricts the choises and quality of discussions so to speak! bad explanation but yeah IM with people directly works better and you bet if somebody manages to put IM through forum software and it works well, the IRC and IM might suffer a blow in userbase... well, not really. They say forums are done for in the future... Quo vadis? Que sera... barf... bark bawk? BARF BARF.
also helllllaa cumbersome so i understand earl's points about forum vs irc.

i've been using irc longer than i've known how to make websites.  like mork said, it's pretty easy and you can read a quick tutorial and know how to do it.  if joining an irc channel is hard for you then you are using a really bad irc client--a lot of really user friendly ones are out there nowadays you don't have to use something like irssi if you don't feel comfortable doing it.  with the right client it isn't any harder than joining a forum or using an IM program.

just the idea of needing to find a decent irc client or look up a tutorial kind of proves it's convoluted, doesn't it? maybe that mibbit thing is totally simp, but who would know? how would I ever know if I wasn't sitting here talking about how irc stinks with a bunch of people who'd like to tell me doesn't

how the heck do people find IM programs???  you're a smart lad you can figure it out, i think anyone who would want to be on saltw irc is capable of using irc i didn't say my grandma who sometimes forgets my name can do it IT'S NOT THAT HARD

I think that's more of a software problem, IRC itself is actually pretty simple. Connect to a server, choose a nickname, select a channel/chatroom

IRC? More like IRClueless. I have no fucking idea how to wield it...from what I remember, I was intensely intimidated by all the pound signs and shit so I never got into it. Handling it now would be like dismantling a bomb that, instead of exploding, makes me look like the dumbest asshole on the Internet.

irc's really chill. and once you start theres nothing to be scared of! :) drule's topic (http://www.saltw.net/index.php?topic=81927.0) explains what you need to get started so you should def come.

also you only ever need to open it once because cool people just idle 24/7.

If IRC is taking up all your time you're doing it wrong. Have it open in the background while doing other stuff, or if you have space at the edge of the screen or something.

Like people who spend all their time on twitter/facebook why do they do that
Title: Bring me up to speed, I'm torn with curiosity
Post by: Vellfire on May 01, 2011, 01:52:25 pm
Yeah you don't open IRC and STARE AT IT you just leave it open and if people talk you see what they said.

I'd idle 24/7 but there's no way to mute the sounds in my client (without muting my whole computer) so I close it when I don't want to hear bleeps and bloops.

That's genuinely unfortunate, but I imagine pretty the same as when he was ORIGINALLY around. He was constantly banned/unbanned for the first few years of the site, often only being saved due to the fact that some of us had a soft spot for his antics.

I remember our great PLOT on IRC where Funk had somehow gotten ahold of the RPGDS beta. DP, Alexander and I were trying to give him a virus that would have deleted the files, pretending like we were sending him the "UPDATED VERSION". He totally didn't fall for it.

Plus Bart and Belross were like "WTF ARE YOU SEND HIM A VIRUS FOR?!"

Moral: Everyone whose name begins with a B is inherently more ethical.

Man it's so weird coming back here every once in a while. It's like you get older but this place is more or less wrapped in a bubble. I started coming here around high school and distinctly remember messing around with RM95/2k on the family's old P3 Dell. Now that it's been more than just a few years, this place still brings back old memories. Like when I see the names Erave, Safari and Mateui (just a few of recent posters), I think to myself "i know these people, i have interacted with them before, but i don't remember how or when."

I remember getting in arguments with people over whether rm2k3 was legit programming or not, and now that I've got like 2 degrees in CS i realize those fuckers were right all along. Or raging in the mod forum for some trivial reason that I don't even remember. Or saying to myself $15 is a lot of money for premium membership, man i need to eat, forget gamingw. Anyways, I love y'all so keep this machine churning.
