I have no idea what that other thread is about, but here I could use some insight from you tech-heads and gizmo geeks. I want to upgrade the graphics card in my PC so that it's better than my laptop's http://www.notebookcheck.net/ATI-Mobility-Radeon-HD-5470.23698.0.html

and various other programs, preferably without getting too expensive. I don't remember what my desktop uses now or what kind of processor it has, but if it actually really matters I can find that out for you when I get back. all I know is I took the worst graphics card selection available because I planned to upgrade. the pc is about a year old.

I have a 5770 and it's been good for all the games I've played on it. It might not be Future Proof for long as far as playing new games with max settings goes but I imagine it'll totally PWN that google sketchbook. 100 dollar is about 60 pounds I think, seems like a good deal. I don't think it matters which one you get very much, I bought one from XFX despite them having a bad record honoring warranties in europe because they give you a free door handle sign that says DO NOT DISTURB - I'M GAMING

Well, I guess. Maybe it's the concept of having a huge case at all that's foreign to me. Most people I know have a laptop now. I never quite saw the use of having it on the desk though, especially back when everybody had CRT monitors.

depending on how that power is generated, I'm sure the power used by your average desktop doesn't come close to the amount of resource depletion involved with making laptops.

Is this thread about graphics cards any more?   Anyway, I have a shitty generic power supply in my off-the-shelf Best Buy box, and need to replace my GFX card.  Should I get a new power supply, since it was supporting a GFX card at some point, or should I not risk it and just replace the PSU?

It depends on the PSU really.
If your system wasn't built as a gaming machine, there's a good chance that your PSU will be some crappy generic piece of tat that's not really going to be well suited to feeding a decent graphics card.
My system, for example, only came with a GeForce GT 420, which isn't designed for gaming (runs Dead Island on high setting pretty well, but cries at the thought of running games like Champions Online or Deus Ex: HR with anything near), but the rest of my system is fairly decent (2.8Ghz i5 with 6GiB of DDR3).
Because it's not powering a good graphics card, my PSU is some weedy little box of crap that only pumps out around 250W, which isn't enough to power, say, an AMD Radeon 6850, which needs at least a 500W PSU.


Your best bet would be to open your system, find out how much power your PSU can pump out and what connectors it has.


Also, while I'm here...
Does anyone know if the XFX AMD Radeon 6850 or 6870 are any good?
I'm planning on buying a new graphics card and PSU between now and early 2012, but I don't want to spend more than about £200-£210 on the graphics card and £70 on the PSU.
Also, yes, I know about AMD's iffy numbering system (6870 is below 5870 and such).

Ihateyou, go for the 6850 dicrectCU TOP from asus, i have it and it's amazing. All the reviews say it's MUCH better then then the standard 6870 and it's cheaper plus it has extra headroom for even more OCing then what it comes with out of the box. I have it at standard settings to preserve life and so far the only time's it's failed to run games at a decent FPS is on games with shitty engines like oblivion which is based on the gambryo engine. It can run RAGE, Crysis 2 and many other games on max settings at 1680X1050 at decent fps (read 30+ fps), RAGE plays at 50-60 FPS contantly for example.

p.s. gambryo is a true shitfest, our university computers had the engine in raw form and it was SOOO buggy, I talked with other's who were using it and they told me how it was unstable, prone to random crashing (worked one moment and not the next for the exact same segment) and they often had to re-write parts of the engines code to get it work properly.

Too bad the next gen HD 7000 would require a mombo update to use since it's using PCI Express 3.0 on a good note 3.0 buses can use 2.0/2.1

Graphics always suck, every new game is awful just keep your old card and play the first half hour of every new game on the lowest settings for like a half hour until you realize it's awful but no big deal you downloaded it illegally anyway so just toss it in the trash and play the web version of bejeweled until you pass out on your desk from exhaustion

I wish they didn't show/explain how they get across those metal things/gaps, you just accept that they get across much like a first person shooter where they just sort of hover over it and get to the other side
