I seem to be going through a sci-fi tv show phase at the moment.

- I recently finished watching the 4400. Not bad at all. I had to force myself through some of the earlier episodes but by season 3 the show really picks up but unfortunately it is cut too short at the end of season 4. Too bad.
- I'm 2/3rds into watching the Lost Room. It only has 6 episodes so check it out if you want to watch a quick show. The first episode was a little lack lustre until you get half-way through it, then things kick up a notch and you realize you're going to have a wild ride with this one. Not sure if the last episode has a satisfying conclusion. Once I watch it I'll let you know.
- Farscape. Oh Farscape, how I love your strange quirkiness. I'm currently ending season 3. Don't be put off by the muppets comments by the show's detractors - the muppet characters are so lifelike you'll quickly forget they're puppets. The show seems to sometimes follow an overlying storyline, but then sometimes goes into random episode-of-the-week moments. It's not for everyone, but if you're a fan of light-hearted sci-fi, this show will be right up your alley. The characters are awesome, and together they form this dysfunctional family that is always bickering and swearing at each other (gotta love their own invented swear words like frell, yotz, and drenn which they throw out a lot) but always working together when it counts the most.

SPARTACUS: VENGEANCE!!

In spite of being an incredibly trashy show, it's amazing in terms of low-drama. It totally writes itself, true, but still manages to surprise you every so often. It's pretty much the kind of show you'd consider like BADASS in your mid-teens, but if you strip back the snobbish veneer of adulthood, it's actually pretty rad.

Plus phrases like "HE COMES BEARING NICENESS ONLY TO SHOVE COCK UP ASS!" make it pretty hilarious!

That's because it doesn't even start getting good until season 2. I know this even though it's not even out yet. (as long as they don't screw up the episode where Theon Greyjoy names his ship)

From stuff that hasn't already been mentioned, a close friend of mine has already gotten me interested in watching Justified and Supernatural.

From what I can tell, anybody who doesn't enjoy Supernatural are simply overestimating that show's ability to take itself seriously. I imagine it's good in the exact same sense people who like Buffy think it's good.

I'll probably also start up "Shameless" next. Considering Boardwalk Empire and Justified as well.

I love Zooey Deschanel, but she shits me up the wall in that show. I also want to love it so bad just for her but I can't, and I've tried. For me the show is like a really generic and uninteresting How I Met Your Mother.

Community, Parks & Recreation, Boardwalk Empire and Breaking Bad would be my television picks. I want to get into Fringe at some point too.

I've been hearing that about Community from a lot of people. But while I don't think the show's gotten worse, it's more I've become so accustomed to the characters that I enjoy watching them regardless of whether or not the material is that funny. What this season really needs though is more episodes where they're altogether and you see them interact as a group; there's been a lot of pairing up to make storytelling easier, but they don't even come together at the end or anything. When you see them together as a group is when the show really shines, like in the multiple timeline ep or the fake clip show - hands down two of my favourite episodes from the entire series.

Still, season 3's had some of the best episodes of the series though, e.g. multiple timeline, last week's documentary, Glee Christmas.

I think some of the reasons Community has such a fervent fanbase are due to it's more unfortunate qualities, like being so obsessed with media trivia that it's got two whole characters who are 80% trivia, and doing creepy things like that episode where Allison Brie sang in a baby voice about wanting Jeff to be her daddy (who she is in love with on the show), and the intention that this was to be a sexy and cool thing (they constantly do this with the character of Annie, who is a Sexy Schoolgirl)

There are other shows which, although they've also got some problems with their comedy ethics!!!! are still so distinctive that I totally understand why people go nuts over them, like Arrested Development and stuff like that. I don't really see this in Community where the comedy seems to be a mix of, in order; average sitcom jokes, stuff that's meant to be funny because you recognize it, and meme-style non sequiturs like you used to see on Scrubs* (Pop-pop! Starburns!) (Actually, this kind of stuff doesn't usually bother me, I like nonsense, but amidst the derivative writing and gross nerd shit that dominates the rest of the show, them throwing in these kind of easy laughs doesn't work for me)

I guess another part of the appeal, which isn't necessarily a comedic aspect, but attracts nerds, is the high-concept episodes they tend to do. I don't have any problem with that at all in theory, but it feels like it's just something they do which doesn't necessarily heighten the quality of the episodes beyond on a nerd level - although on the nerd level, there is also the fact that most of these high-concepts are riiiiifffffs on common genres/tropes (they did a zombie apocalypse episode, and a paintball episode that just riiiiiiifffffed the shit outta everything. So god damned aware of other things people did, these guys are.). It's a very easy thing to do, and creates a pretty convincing illusion that the show is wacky and crazy, but it's often done for no other reason than to do it and doesn't actually provide any space for jokes or storylines they couldn't have done anyway. So maybe nobody gives a crap about that, and doesn't need to think about how their comedy shows are structured that much, but if you do, the gist is that Community does superficially exciting things that don't really go anywhere and might not surprise or excite you all that much after all.

I've seen all of it, because I'm just one of those motherfuckers who finds huge amount of TV really easy to watch and when I find a show I can stand, or find interesting in one or another way (not necessarily liking it or anything), I tend to blow through most of it in a few days. Community is a show I am always on the verge of turning off and I have in irritation then gone back to at a moment of boredom while sitting in the office at work or something. It takes a lot for me to drop a show because I'm one of those god damned people, but if you aren't then there are better comedy shows out there to watch. Not many, but Community is something I think is actively gross and I'm a little pissed off at myself for having watched so much of it. Maybe I will drop it after all. Britta is pretty funny in season 3 though.

*Community is comparable to Scrubs in a whole bunch of ways, but I'd say Community is less objectionable than Scrubs because Scrubs was flat out bogus especially on gender and using lazy comedy stereotypes. Also it stars that fucker Zach Braff, who I think in my head has murdering-parties with Jack Black, Vince Vaughn and a bunch of other fuckers. He's literally a serial killer of women, in my brain.

I dunno dude I think you're hitting on the "FUCKING NERD HUMOR" aspect of things too hard. Yeah when they harp on it like a one trick pony its pretty shitty (somebody talked about that nerd show on the WB with the hot chick...yeah) but I think if its done with some class and restraint its pretty cool.

You gotta think alot of the people writing this shit are probably nerds so that comes more naturally to them, kind of making fun of themselves. In the community episode I watched some asian guy painted himself as a dark elf or some shit and then the old guy kind of mutter/called him "blackface" which is kind of funny with the character and the way he said it. It was almost so subtle I barely caught it. I guess being an internet person that would tend to make you cringe but the internet is now a prominent and overbearing part of popular culture. You gotta kind of keep that in mind and take it with a grain of salt.

I honestly prefer the kind of more realistic approach to humor like shamless, early weeds, and arrested development. Kind of shit that would make someone that saw themselves as morally inclined cringe I guess? I find it hilarious. Even race/gender/sexuality humor if its done tastefully.

I don't really like the monty pithon slap-stick style stuff. Or what I've seen of it. I really like intricatelly clever puns and crude dark humor.

Zach galifinakis does the style I'm talking about pretty well. His stand-up though not really his movie stuff though I did like the first hangover. After that he just kept recycling the same character.

I think one of the reasons the stuff I'm saying is for nerds bothers me is how self-obsessed it is, making jokes about itself all the time. Like you said, it can be done with some restraint and insight, and not be so bad and even be funny, but I don't think you'll find that in Community. They're in their own Pillow Fort la la Land. You know how some animals sniff+eat their own dung?

You've pretty much hit the nail on the head with what's gone wrong with Community. I started watching Community from the beginning, and I didn't really warm to at first.  But after the first season I basically fell in love with the characters and the kind of humour they were putting in with the generic sitcom stuff. Season 1 is also much more balanced in terms of the generic sitcom and the meta/nerdy material. Season 2 basically just went all out in terms of the latter, but I think it worked fantastically well. Season 3's having trouble keeping a sensible balance.

There are three sitcoms that I hold in extremely high esteem as sitcoms - Seinfeld, That '70s Show, and Arrested Development. Seinfeld was basically a sitcom without the generic sitcom elements such as a romantic subplot and wwww moments, and from what I understand that was the intention. That '70s Show for me is the perfect generic sitcom; the jokes are amusing, the characters are fun, and the awww moments work. It's does the balancing act well, and I think the premise/setting of the show helps things a lot. Arrested Development is that once in a blue moon type of show that sets a new standard and is completely left field or subsersive (fuck I hate that word), etc., etc..

For me Community sits somewhere between Arrested Development and That '70s Show in terms of what it is. It's never quite the generic sitcom, but it never quite reaches the height of what Arrested Development is. There's also something really artificial about Community and that's where I think the Scrubs comparison is most apt. For me Scrubs was so constructed, so fake (probably less so in the beginning) that it was like looking at those creepy Japanese robots and blow-up dolls and having that godawful uncanny valley feeling. The difference between Community and Scrubs though (although who knows how long this will last), is that Community revels at being artificial and even draws attention to itself in this way, while Scrubs was just yeah... that thing I said before.

I pretty much agree with what's been said about community, but I like it because I'm a sucker for even vaguely interesting characters (abed is really boring tho and they kinda ruined annie) and it's really the only sitcom that has attempted to do anything since arrested dev. I need something to veg out to that people my age actually watch
Also it stars that fucker Zach Braff, who I think in my head has murdering-parties with Jack Black, Vince Vaughn and a bunch of other fuckers. He's literally a serial killer of women, in my brain.

Like theres one part on bering sea gold where a winch's cable guide (or something like it) is breaking off and the dumbass kid that worked on the barge started spot welding it (halfassing it and not completely welding it) and I predicted that shit was gonna snap and fuck him up....it did within a few seconds.

I didn't know this though:

The Christine Rose used a crew of 4 for season 1 (Steve Pomrenke crew). As the largest vessel, the crew needs to earn $1.5 million to make a profit.

thats alot of money

then its no wonder the rest of those boats are raggedy as fuck and can barely stay afloat. Some parts get you pissed though. Like, FUCKING FRED and there was this shitty rich old lady whom I guess owned or hired out one of the proffessional businesses that dredge for gold (she's not on the show and they're all entreprenuers) buying pretty much every single claim spot being sold in northern alaska after 12 years of the gov't not giving the property out. She bought 85% of them in total ignorance apperantly not knowing exactly what was good and what wasn't. Just whatever because she's a piece of shit and she can.

I watched the finale of House.

Fantastic. I'm sad, but understanding that the show has to end. I'd say I'm interested in what the actors/writers/directors do next. Only problem with the actors though is that I wont be capable of not thinking of them as characters from house when I see them in movies. Hell, not that long ago I was watching "The Next 3 Days" and saw the actor for 13 in it and I kept feeling sad because of her characters illness, even though her character doesn't have that illness in said movie. I couldn't detach her from her 'House M.D.' character.

Like, I know that if I ever decide to go back and watch that live-action 101 dalmatians movie I wont be able to look at the 'bumbling criminal' character in it (Jasper) and not expect some sort of witty comment because Hugh Laurie played him.

I like the premise,  I've gotten through the first season, and I'm going to watch the first two episodes of the second season tonight (that is as far as the show has gotten so far).  I think my biggest problem with the show so far is how the main characters are well done but many of the minor characters are inconsistent, and the way that the show handles internal drama is way too much.  There is not enough alien/human interaction to make it feel plot oriented, and it feels far too filler whenever an episode spends its entire time interacting with just the humans and their own problems/egos.   I also don't like how the show is paced.  There is only 10 episodes in the first season, and they spent the middle 6 doing filler, and now everything in the last 2 episodes of the first season were really rushed.  They have interesting ideas, and no transitions into putting those ideas into the viewers head other than to hit you over the head with them suddenly without warning (eg: what Glass finds out about the harnesses with her med student intern)

i was about to make a new tv thread since i didn't remember one but this was at the bottom of the first page so i'm bumpin it to talk about BOMB GIRLS

It was sorta under the radar when it started but it's done very well so idk how familiar people are with it, but Bomb Girls is a Canadian series about women working in a bomb factory during WW2.  I won't go into too much detail about the plot since you can find that out yourself fairly easy, but I guess I just wanna say that this is one of the best shows I've watched in a long time.  It's really engaging and I'm pretty invested in these characters.  Season 2 just started last week and the first season (which was expected to be All Of It when it was made) is only 6 episodes so now's a good time to check it out if you're interested.  Ultimately it feels really character-driven instead of plot-driven, which makes for way better TV, and it's rare to get such a good show focused around a primarily female cast.  There are still plenty of solid male characters but the focus is entirely on the women working in the factory.  One of the women is even dealing with being a lesbian in the 40s which is fantastic to me since you get very few queer women on TV, much less in a more or less period piece.  So uh yeah check Bomb Girls out, I'm not really good at talking about what I like in a show unless I've got it on to point out specific things but I think this show has a lot going for it and I've heard almost nobody say anything about it so I'M SAYIN THINGS ABOUT IT ! ! !

i definitely plan on checking out Bomb Girls! :> and Last Friends, too~.

other shows i watch:
i've seen all seven seasons of Dexter. some are far better than others but i don't think any are really BAD. and i don't think it has "jumped the shark" or whatever; season 7 was reaaallly good~  :fogetcrazy:
i've also seen all of Breaking Bad, and i really like it. the writing is excellent and the characters are so relatable. but man, that show is brutal. :boxed: i can't wait to see the final season!
i'm watching Supernatural slowly but surely. i think i'm on season 4 or 5. i've mostly watched it on Netflix while doing my weightlifting routine, which imma get back into soon.

those are the main "big shows" i'm into... i mean, i've seen a hecka lotta shows!! but i don't really consider most of them to be super important. like, i keep up with Criminal Minds and How I Met Your Mother, but those are just chill things i like to watch. i dunno

also, anyone who likes asian dramas (i am reminded of this because i read this topic from the first page where HB mentions Nobuta wo Produce) should reaaallly watch the One Liter of Tears 12-episode show. it is one of only a few media productions which have made me friggin BAWL  :fogetcry: it is true to its title!!

David Attenborough's Africa is pretty great to watch.

I don't care if this is all cut and paste editing to make it like this, the show still rules because animals.

what's this tv thing again

if I was smart enough to hook up youtube to the TV and set it to wendyvainity's channel all the time I'd have no need for real tv. Seriously I think only reason I watch it anymore is for FORMAT is kind of more pleasant than a computer screen

Just watched the pilot of The Walking Dead, I've been told by a bunch of people at work that I should start watching this show and that I would like it. The first episode was pretty good, although I'm not sure I like where the whole dynamic of Rick's family etc is going so far with what I can see, but I like the main character so far and the ending of the pilot at least was a good enough set up that I'd want to watch the rest of the first season.  What are peoples impression of this show?

First season is good, second season's episode 3 to about episode 16 are awful though arguably necessary to watch. Season 3 is pretty good thus far though there has been a few small missteps.

Its overall worth watching but its not mind blowing.

very little happens. They stretch a season that should have been 6 episodes like season 1 into a 13 episode season. (BTW I made a mistake that I only just noticed. its episode 3 to 10 that suck, since you know... there aren't 16 episodes in that season...)

i thought season 7 was really good until and then the rest of the season was just boring and contrived.  The narrative fell apart, and it just felt like the rest of the episodes were completely filler.

edit: of dexter i mean
apparently they killed isaac early because ray stevenson's schedule didn't allow him to film the rest of the season which is a shame since he was the only plot i somewhat enjoyed in that season

and he was definitely a much more interesting character than anything else season 5 or 6 threw our way.

finished the first season of walking dead today
impressions are as follows

I don't know if it matters too much since this is a first season impressions, and the show is no on its third, but for anyone who is interested in starting the series but hasn't, I'll do this as a favor to you.

If you are interested in the series but haven't started it yet, no better time than today.  Overall its no masterpiece, but it at least deserves some of the hype that it has been given.  At the very least, there are not particularly any gaping flaws in plot, writing, or acting that I can identify, its just that so far it seems like it could be a lot more.  This is also based on first season jitters, and the show hans't gotten its footin yet (not uncommon for a first season).  I'll update on season 2 impressions when I get around to watching it later in the week (I've got shit to do, but fuuck that).
