good luck man, i'm gonna be doing this soon too since i don't know anyone in the city i wanna live in

most of my friends experiences with this have been pretty good though, and as long as you go to like an interview/get to meet them properly first you should be okay

I lived with my cousin on the beach in a condo and it was straight. I was up during the day and most of the night and he was only up at night and workin most of the time so I didn't have to be around anybody.

Now I'm renting a house with my brother and his gf. She's a lil annoying but other than that its straight. I think next time I move I'll prolly live by myself though.

Learn to apreciate cheap microwave meals, I go to iceland as there best value for money, £1 for 500g, most for that price only give about 400g. when you go to buy food, hunt around the area for good deals, like when I was in derby, I managed to find a shop that was doing Two 500ml bottles for £1, buy the pepsi max and that's 1.2l just be ready to hunt.  If you have your own oven/hobs then the best thing is cook your own food, takes a while but it's the cheapest, my advice is google for recapies for inspiration.

I have a 1 room studio for $550 and I ride bicycle or take public transportation everywhere. it's pretty cheap, would recommend. the only downside is it's kind of like a suburb in the city and there's nowhere to get groceries unless you drive, and if I want something to do I need to ride my bike pretty far or take the train into center city. otherwise it's great

my pal is getting an artist studio and living out of that for like $350. large space, not heat-efficient, no running water, public restrooms down the hall with no showers. he figures he's just gonna bike to campus and take a shower there when he needs to. it's only so cheap bc it's in a terrible neighborhood, one of the worst in the city, but it is pretty close to center city

I've always had flats with friends so no suggestions in the rent dept aside from that property managers are easier to deal with than landlords and putting rent on an automatic payment is always a good idea.

Living close to a supermarket is pretty important too. Asian grocery stores are the best ones to live near in NZ because they have lots of cheap veggies, noodles, rice, and tofu. That might hold for other countries too. Buying beans, oats and rice in bulk makes sure you have food when you need it. I have lots to say about eating cheap but my guess is that most other people do too and you probably already know. If anyone wants my ultra cheap recipes though, I have heaps of ideas. Don't eat instant noodles.

idk what area you live in, but you should see if there's old factories/warehouses that got converted into units (they could either be super fancy ones or artists' studios..i'm talking about the latter). i live in one now and am in the center of my city for less than 500 a month, since the space gets split up in any way and can fit any number of people. some people pay like 300 or less even, anyway if it weren't for that i'd be paying a crapload more elsewhere so that's my advice.

I thought houses were supposed to be real cheap because of a real estate housing bubble bursting?

renting didn't really change. I think it might have gotten a lil cheaper for awhile. Buying is cheap but only in places that were building alot of subdivisions and shit where there are alot of houses but in places like the city I don't think it really changed either.

Where I live you can buy a fairly recently built house for like 120-150k prolly as where they used to be over 200 I think but I've been told I could build my own home for less than 100k. Most places closer to the city and beaches are expensive as shit though.

i'm paying about 220 a month with two other roommates renting a 3 bedroom two story house at the moment.  its a bit run down (Built in the 50s kind of deal) but it works just dandy for college.

where do you live? perhaps there are certain neighborhoods near you that are cheaper than others (although of course the sketchy factor increases as price decreases)

Vancouver is basically pretty peninsula-ish in shape and my workplace is more or less on the very tip. things get more and more expensive the further you go in that direction. there's not a lot of shady/cheap shit anywhere near there, most of it's far enough away to defeat the purpose of moving out of my parents home.

I was going to maybe not accept the job based on the location alone but I'm like 2 semesters from graduation and wanted to take advantage of the co-op program before it's too late so i'd have a bit of money and a super resume-booster.

Nah the beach is about 25 minutes away and downtown pensacola is about the same. Theres quite a few diff clubs and bars and stuff that aren't too bad and the beach is always fun. I think I like where I live over the new orleans area. The people and cops are shittier but its cheaper, prettier, more outdoorsy shit to do although I haven't been doing it.

I'm paying 900$ a month rent right now for a 3 bedroom brick house with a garage and big back yard. I'm really only paying half that though my brother and his gf are paying the other half. I liked the condo on the beach more it was only and extra 150$ and I might talk to my cousin about doin it again in a year or two.

I think I make it sound worse than it is; most of my problem is I don't know anyone my own age. All the girls I know are married/dating someone else or evil and all the dudes are in some service or work offshore. I actually fell into meeting a pretty cool chick and some old friends and it was really great and the best time I've ever probably had. I felt content and like I was doing good/in a good place. But that all got fucked up and now I feel exactly like what you said you'd need to be in order to live out here.

So I guess what I'm tryin to say is; if you're a people person and are good at making new friends and like beach/outdoorsy shit you'd prolly be ok. You'd have to get to the whole backwater idiot mentality and shockfacter though.

You gotta think out moneys different though too. I think my brother gets like 9$-11$ an hour or something and works enough a week to come up with 500$ a week on average, thats pretty good for a job around here.

so you got to think about that with everything else the standard of living is lower too.

what, does he work 50 hours a week or something. I make about 500 a week too i guess (after the governemnt takes their generous cut). i dunno, i probably will end up starting to look in a higher price range shortly if nothing comes up.

oh fuck PER MONTH. I have been flicking back into this thread repeatedly for several days wondering how in the hell northern hemisphere rents were up at $500p/w for a shitty 1 room studio. my last place was $115p/w (NZ) which is $460 per month. Lived in the small room (big enough for just my bed) in a flat with asbestos and cockroaches (not anymore, we killed the fuckers) but I actually had a really good time. total expenses were like $180p/w and we lived pretty well.

thats alot. And that was just your share or the whole thing?

yeah who the fuck pays by week, I couldn't imagine having to hunt down my landlord every week. I mean mines direct deposited but still...

Edit: thats the one good thing about the states, the housing. I'm gonna save up and build me a house at bumfuck away from everything while its still possible. Not too far but far enough to not be annoyed.

Post by: ATARI on March 16, 2012, 04:36:05 pm
Yeah, I wish I had some sort of direct deposit thing.  Me and my roomates have to track down our landlord the first of every month, but since we're getting a pretty good deal for the most part (an entire house for a total rent of like, 550) its not the worst thing in the world.  Plus our landlord has been pretty good about getting things taken care of in the house, such as fixing our water heater when it broke on New Years Day.

i'm checking out a cheap place tomorrow in a nearly perfect location (as far as convenience is concerned). close to work, close to beach, close to downtown  (not more than 15-30 minutes by public transit)

it has a private kitchen but a shared bathroom (with one other suite) and it's in an ugly bland old building. but it's only 725/mo (most slightly nicer bachelor or 1BR suites in that area are more in the range of 900-1200+ ish)

we'll see tomorrow.

bland and cheap are okay as long as they don't mean "run down" or "corners have been cut in the construction of this building."  Bland should mean, things are previously owned, but durable and are going to work when you need them to.

I live in an incredibly nice area in a major British city. I have a one bedroomed apartment near a like MARINA in the middle of the fucking city, but suffice to say I pay through the absolute nose to live here. My place is so tiny - I know friends of mine who pay less than me but have huge houses and shit, just because they live in the suburbs.

I've been planning to move, but it's so convenient to live here. Like even though I have to travel 40 miles to work (it's in a different county @£"$%), I kind of don't want to move there as the county is like rustic-ville. I need to have theatres and restaurants on my doorstep.

Oh plus there is a BIG ASDA walking distance HOORAY! I'll live in the surroundings of a king and yet dine on the finest of processed crap!

I'd still take the place over any area where the chance of being shanked is significantly increased however.

Location is everything. Be sure you're close(walkable distance) to 24/7 convenience stores, a department store, a bakery, and a terminal or whereever that is easy to pck up a ride.
