Explain to me A) why this fucking garbage is selling so much? and B)who is largly buying it?
I'm assuming women. Please tell me I am wrong about this.
what the fuck is wrong with people
The Fifty Shades trilogy was developed from a Twilight (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twilight_(series)) fan fiction (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fan_fiction) originally titled Master of the Universe and published episodically on fan-fiction websites under the pen name "Snowqueens Icedragon". The piece featured characters named after Stephenie Meyer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephenie_Meyer)'s characters in Twilight, Edward Cullen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Cullen) and Bella Swan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bella_Swan).
Its gonna be a looooonnnng night...

sexy books for moms

The plot traces the relationship between recent college graduate Anastasia Steele and manipulative billionaire Christian Grey. Steele is required by Grey to sign a contract allowing him complete control over her life as well as a non-disclosure agreement, something that he's required from all of his previous submissives. Upon learning that she is a virgin, Grey agrees to have sex with her in order to prepare her for later encounters, fully intending that the contract would be signed. As she gets to know him, she learns that his sexual tastes involve bondage, domination, and sadism, and that childhood abuse left him a deeply damaged individual. In order to be his partner, she agrees to experiment with BDSM, but she struggles to reconcile who she is (a virgin who has never previously had a boyfriend) with whom Christian wants her to be, his submissive and a to-do-with-as-he-pleases partner in his "Red Room of Pain".
Its a twilight esque cliche' ass erotic novel about a young girl being manipulated and victimized by a disgusting piece of shit to prepare her for sexual relationships with other men.
I haven't read it because the premise in itself made me want to throw up in my mouth a little bit. Its more submissive mysogonistic garbage like twilight except presented in the form of "women porn"

Fifty Shades of Grey has topped best-seller lists in the US, the UK and around the world.[1][2] The series has sold around ten million copies worldwide, with book rights having been sold in 37 countries,[3] and set the record as the fastest-selling paperback of all time surpassing the Harry Potter series.

catamites, maybe you should use this opportunity to buff your game/ i think it would be fitting for this day. the magical midsummer's day, "fifty shades of gey (Whops grey, freud...?) and bonzi dreams", act 1. it's like some game intro/beginning part, it's very moetic. poetic.

EDIT really, life is just a sleepwalk. you can do anything u want, like take over this topic for whatever strange/rdiiclous discussion. strange sudden urge for gardening. sorry go on

Here is some totally offensive humor:
A recent influx of marital separations have left lawmakers asking questions. Women everywhere have been lining up to become single again. A recent poll as to why these women are seeking liberation from the married life has yielded disturbing results.
The polls were ran with the following options A) Adultury B) Income and C) Boredom but because of a pattern of oddly consistant replies a fourth entry had to be added to the poll D) Pussy assed bitches.
The women wouldn't go into explicate detail. But apparently, they feel that the manhood of their would be lovers have apparently faltered as a result of persistant requests made by the ladies during intimacy being denied. As a result, predominantly middle aged women everywhere are lining up and filing for divorce proceedings. It must be noted that an alarming rate of these participants were wearing studded collars and revealing leather apparel. All of them had a copy of the 2012 erotic fiction "50 shades of grey".
On an unrelated note, the newly released film "Fuck her like the little whore she is" by XXX entertainment is number one in the box office today...
-
The erotic fiction novel, "50 shades of grey" has been recently been featured on oprah's book club.
To commemerate this event Oprah stuck a rubber gag in her mouth and demanded that Dr. Phil "Ride her like a fatass pony" on national television. Everyone in the audience was given a complementary 12-inch barbed dildo, personally signed by E.L. James.
O.J. Simpson has been voted the 2012 Sexiest Man Alive
He was unaminously nominated for the award after the release of his new fictious novel "50 Different Gloves That Don't Fit". The novel describes in great detail Simpson's various sexual expeditions including how he "Choked a bitch one time while he was fuckin her till she turned blue."
Women everywhere are lining up at the Lovelock detention center in Lovelock, Nevada where simpson is currently being incarcerated for book signings.
I originally wrote them all on facebook. I don't know very many pent up soccer moms but I'm hoping maybe it'll snowball and piss them off.

Edit: speaking of VIRAL things
for whatever reason I'm pissed about that grandma who got $500000 in donations even though it sounds great on the surface I hate how due to one video people are suddenly awakened from their sleepwalk like wow some people are oppressed and shit?? I never knew that drinks a mccafe Like logically other people have way worse problems than being harassed on bus like think for 5 seconds and there are QUADRUPLE AMPUTEES and CHILD SOLDIERS etc. but I guess the medium is the message or something... strongly believes in Youtube conspiracy video because the spooky music made you feel strongly also the narrator is official-sounding. Not that people shouldn't do nothing for the grandma just people randomly being motivated pisses me off. Kony video comes out and suddenly people realize Africa exists. Donate to Oxfam or Ox Nards or whatever and give to many poor starving grandmas as a surrogate for the Youtube grandma who is obviously the only grandma in the world
Edit: Also world focuses all their anger on Sandusky go get angry at a bunch of pedophile priests but wait that's more than one person so it's all non-specific-y how can I get angry/feel for more than one person at a time... math is hard. World events are just a vehicle for middle-class people's personal catharsis anyway
Edit: I dunno maybe it's because grandma you can personally see having those problems or it could be your grandma, it is beyond my capacity to imagine problems like being a modern-day slave or something therefore it doesn't exist really kind of well fuck you btw
Edit: So is our generation just more in tune to this stuff or what? Because my dad is oblivious when certain things are said on tv like 10 people die a second due to malaria when I just ASSUME this shit by now and it'd be surprising if that WASN'T the case. In the time to make this post 48395 girls had their genitals chopped up probably because of God or something and yet atheists are beyond some people's comprehension. Or at least like understand if people believe in one of those old religions where God is an asshole and causes volcanoes just because. Also gay marriage "marriage should be between a man and a woman for procreation" blah blah blah I seriously want to start a mock campaign supporting traditional marriage because when a penis is inside a vagina God is happy or just sing that Monty Python song 'every sperm is good' because it's basically like how Easter symbols like bunnies are all pagan and based on fertility and now that it's not a SURVIVAL thing 'God wants you to make a lot of babies' which is sort of the message is kind of weird
seriously let's go around waving signs "I support traditional family values which are penises inside of vaginas not penises inside of penises or however that works" also only gay MEN exist because they're ickier to think about. Or like can I hire Anonymous for this to be their next thing. Legions of Guy Fawkes masks in front of the vatican waving signs with diagrams of how God wants you to do sexy times. Haha to illustrate better like have them in tears over how beautiful the act of procreation is like some realllllly really ugly straight people doing it and be like "this so very beautiful truly only God could've created such a glorious thing" then have a picture of two very attractive gays/lesbians on the other side and then everyone shrinks away and hisses oh god it's so hideous I can't look
Edit: ahaha sorry if I'm a little DARK
-
A book about bondage what a joke. But 50 shades grey sounds like it should be about something evil how about this author of a crappy book. call your next book 50 shades of slutty pink material. go on selling more fucking books.
Really I think it's just crazy why this book sells. I can't find any rash explanation of it.
-
ugh I didn't know it was like that. cool that the only thing anyone ever said about it is that "it's erotic" as if this should be controversial at all, rather than "this is a fanfic about romanticized rape and slavery"
-
i thought "recent college graduate Anastasia Steele and manipulative billionaire Christian Grey" was really good and probably all you need to know. power names. top whitest names discovered by a mom. ayn rand the JEW can only look envious at these powerful+rugged names. tales from the dynasty dimension. we transcended her. this is it.

a hell of a lot hangs on who gets cast as Blake Carrington in that new Dynasty series, that's all i'm about to say. . . . .
edit: wait, it turns out i was thinking of dallas but i dont know if there's any difference between these. foreigner...
-
Had not even heard of this until yesterday when it was mentioned on a Sinfest comic. Only now have I learned that its so popular.
Skimmed the Wikipedia page. Little depressed that its the fastest selling book ever. However, as far as I can tell, its just a bad to mediocre erotic novel. I don't understand the hubub for it or against it.
And surely we've had books/novels that describe niche fetishes or brutal sex in great detail before, so I can't imagine it actually introduces anything new.
-
Its because WOMEN are buying it and flocking to it. They're the only ones buying it too! Its pretty much the most gross and perverted romance scenario you could possibly come up with. These aren't just mostly young girls like in the case of twilight either, these are grown ass (mostly married) women.
Its not like pornography, movies, or other literary media where the shits put in there inside of the story to somehow make some terrible point. From what I understand the point here being made is that being submissive is ok and actually hot.
That is some real fucked up shit dude.
also
Yeah thanks, that really helps.
The point behind the jokes if you didn't get it is to be as mysogonistic as hell to kind of point out why that shit is fucked up. Oprah being a current leader to women everywhere feeding into this garbage in some sadistic manner, oj simpson being an object of desire, married men everywhere being dumped because of not conforming to the garbage.
Sometimes you gotta point out some terrible shit to get some folks to see why shits terrible.
Because, I guess if you're a woman and all your friends started picking up this crap because it had something to do with twilight and yeah it gets pretty disgusting and you personally admit that but still read it because its got some romantacism copycatted from twilight. Maybe you could read the whole thing and not be clever enough to get why its so absolutely abhorrant?
-
Hi ironic misogyny is still misogyny and still awful as hell so don't do it. Also blaming women here totally ignores any social context that would lead to this so thanks for boiling a really complex problem to "gosh, women." There is a problem here but you aren't addressing it, you're just being sexist as fuck under the guise of being concerned. I'm not about to have another argument over this stuff, I'm just gonna leave this here and hope you think about it. The jokes you posted are misogynistic as hell no matter what your excuse is and you should seriously know better than to a) write them and b) post them here seeking for approval. They aren't okay, and neither is your simplistic view on the problems surrounding this book.
-
I think a large reason that this is selling so well is because people are hearing how offensive it is and they have the mentality of "Can it really be this bad? Must investigate further." A shitty reason to buy a book yes, but I can understand it.
-
ya and the news is doing a pretty good job at advertising it. what is this devilishly decadent book that moms everywhere are raving over? and is it really safe to read? more @11
-
Shit sells. We live in a world full of idiots who buy shit because they think shit is good. It's the natural order of things, sadly.
-

cool another person who doesn't understand the social factors that lead to things happening the way they do
i'm not even gonna bother with this one seriously forget it

Knowing how isn't changing much now, is it?
-
uh yeah it does do you really not get that
do you really not see how understanding why things are like they are is not only useful but ABSOLUTELY VITAL to causing any sort of change?
-
I look forward to your results.
-
trying to understand society and other people is everything, and you're never done learning :)
-
yeah. one thing i will never understand or tolerate is people who have no interest in examining the world around them or trying to change it for the better. nobody totally understands the world but there's a huge difference between people who try and want to get it and those who don't. i don't have time for people who don't care to try.

If there is one thing the history of marketing has taught us it's that shit will not be contained. Shit breaks free, expands to new audiences, and crashes through executives, annoyingly, maybe even dangerously, but there it is. I'm simply saying that shit finds a way.
-
I think a large reason that this is selling so well is because people are hearing how offensive it is and they have the mentality of "Can it really be this bad? Must investigate further." A shitty reason to buy a book yes, but I can understand it.
Yeah but why aren't men buying it?
This thing has a definite user base and its pretty much exclusively catering to them and them only. I don't think its the same as rotten.com in literature format because fantasizing about submission is some kind of psychological shit. Also its masked in romance. Which I thinks the main reason its spreading so quickly.
From looking at it that way then maybe you could explain why alot of people read "A Child Called It". I mean the general populace and not people that would read into it for psychological purposes.
-
nuance? i laugh in the face of nuance!
-
surely if there's one thing the history of marketing has taught us, it's that everybody involved in marketing should be round up and sent to a deserted island where they no longer pose any threat to human civilisation.
People were talking about this book at work yesterday, and it sounds gross. Not gross as in OOOH PERVERTED, but in that it's drivel. Misoginistic rape fantasies, no storyline, badly written. Continuing the downfall of literature promoted by such shite as RICHARD AND JUDY BOOK CLUB and stuff. But then, the people at work who read this also read Dan Brown and Twilight, so... it's a fucking cultural cul de sac. And there's me explaining how Twilight encourages STALKING, how Bella has no character of her own, how it's badly written crap etc etc etc.
As soon as they finished talking, I rushed onto Amazon and ordered me Joyce's Ulysses because I am a pretentious cunt. But fuck it, it's a proper book written by a weirdo with a fun way of experimenting with the written language.
-
Yeah but why aren't men buying it?
gee i wonder. why aren't boys buying princess dolls???

The state of florida banned it from public libraries because of "sexual content" and not the abhorrant mysogyny. Which is worse than just leaving it in libraries I think.

there's a scene where he makes her go down a slip & slide and crash into a pool of neon gunk, where she has to dig for flags (timed)
i'm skimming this and there are multiple refs to how fastidiously kept his gothic manse and personal appearance are, almost to the point of obsession
i keep bringing this up but i'm the only one who sees the connection, apparently
anyway, the whole series is a pretty good read. i don't know why this gets portrayed as a chick thing 'cause i'm pretty sure most dudes (whether they admit it or not) also fantasize about getting abducted to a fancy vampire's estate to live as his erotic My Pet Monster. that's the subtext in most male-driven pulps, basically every Bond movie, i could go on but no.
bunch of fans on the Grey forums did happen to notice codes hidden throughout all three books that will probably be used for unlockables in an as of yet unannounced social/facebook game, so that's something to look forward to.
-
someone did a .txt/hack (new slang for text hack) of a 50shades ebook and changed it so she & he are wearing polos with the logo of a (fictional) big box retail store stitched on (new hire/assistant manager.) just going through this so she can get Benefits (or so she tells herself, you have to read it to find out.)
-
waiting for all my more niche fics to get optioned for film deals. i did one about being kidnapped by a secret society who put you in their Melter Machine and turn you into a bike. did one about being forced to eat endless Little Caesar's Hot & Ready $5 while cruel man slaps your amazing expanding belly & kisses tomato sauce from your lips (i toured a local LC's to get the details right and they had it printed out on their bulletin board for almost a month, so they said.) i did one about the Bitch King of Magma Isles who transforms you into Star Wars figures and coldly discards you so the dog can chew + puke on you. public shame raccoon story, forced to live as humanoid raccoon after curse by Tanuki god. lotsa face elongation (FE,) snout growth (SG) bits. story codes nc m/raccoon mm/raccoon mmmm/raccoon fe sg.

I look forward to your results.
worst reply in the entire world.
do you have any fucking idea how many people struggled and fought and died just so you could sit here on your stupid, lazy ass and type your worthless opinions into this forum? "you can never change society"? that's the dumbest bullshit I've ever heard and it's coming from literally one of the most privileged people in the entire world, who lives in a country that went through countless struggles that resulted in the cushy lifestyle you're currently permitted to have.
ALL of those struggles started with the simple notion that people need to know what the problem is. that's where it begins. once you know how things are, and you're rightfully displeased with the situation, change becomes possible. every popular struggle succeeds on the agreement of the public at large, no exception.
remember the Israeli-Palestinian conflict? yeah, I'm pretty sure you'd tell me "the US will never stop helping Israel carry out its bloody occupation, you can't change a thing." but actually, keep your eyes open the coming decade. the activists who care about this conflict and have for years endured the most vile treatment, the destruction of their careers and defamation of their characters, have actually finally largely succeeded in educating the public on the matter. what's happened is very similar to South Africa during its apartheid: it's been turned into a bad word. everywhere in the world, people know there's something up with Israel. and this has very seriously changed the way things operate, and the limits of what the propaganda machine can get away with as it tries to deceive the public. it may not seem much to you, but that's literally the road towards a solution being paved. remember: South Africa had to become a state of all its citizens after the international pressure to do so became intolerable, and when one of the greatest activists on the matter was asked about it, he said that one of their greatest successes was how they educated the public so that they knew what "apartheid" means and how horrible it is. change ALWAYS starts with public awareness.
just knowing is DEFINITELY a crucial thing, even if you're not an activist and intend to do nothing, and by DELIBERATELY avoiding knowledge about this issue you're doing yourself and also everybody else in society a great disservice. it's disturbingly anti-social, frankly.
I'd rather you tried to know about the issue and got it wrong than this kind of antipathy.

On a sidenote, ASDA is selling all three books for £10 this weekend.

I laugh at how hung up people are getting about what something of poor quality successfully selling in shops has to do with the state of human society, and how ignorant you're trying to make me out to be. It's hilarious, and quite pathetic too.
Of course I fucking get all of that.
-
this book sounds dumb to me but if some women are into all the BDSM fantasy stuff then i don't see the harm in it.

Heh, I laugh at you guys for caring. I laugh at you guys for examining the world around you. I laugh at you for giving a shit about trying to improve things. I laugh at you for not being a gross gamernerd who thinks everyone else is dumb and that nothing is worth caring about or looking at. Welp, time to play video games.
-
I cannot fucking tolerate this attitude. Fuck that and fuck you. Start giving a shit.

Look, all I want to know is why a shit book for cunts is some kind of undeniable proof that our society is decaying and why we all need to wake up and do something about it. I've met enough conspiracy nuts who think the whole world is "brainwashed" and "unaware" and needs to wake up, but giving the same kind of speeches over a piece of fiction seems a bit far.
Unless you're trolling of course...
-
IT'S ALMOST LIKE THE POPULARITY OF THIS BOOK MIGHT BE REPRESENTATIVE OF SOME SORT OF SOCIAL ATTITUDES AND THAT IT MIGHT BE A PRODUCT OF OUR SOCIETY, WHICH IS THE ONLY THING THAT'S REALLY WORTH DISCUSSING ON THIS TOPIC. IT'S ALMOST LIKE THIS BOOK AND THE CONVERSATIONS ABOUT IT ARE PART OF LARGER ISSUES THAT YOU APPARENTLY DON'T THINK EXIST IF YOU THINK IT'S JUST THIS BOOK.
people telling you things you don't want to hear or don't agree with isn't trolling, sorry.
-
cunts
yeah fuck you very much
-
you literally think the existence of societal attitudes is believing in conspiracies. society isn't a conspiracy it's fuckin LIFE
-
Thanks but I've been thinking that for years. I just don't think the whole world's going to go to hell over it. It's not exactly the next Mein Kampf is it?
My point is you're not telling me anything new here. It'll die down like everything else that's controversial, you wait and see.
As for those social attitudes. Enough people are coming around on sexism, homophobia and all that other awful shit people do, but we'll never convince everyone.
-
it's not about this goddamn book it's about societal attitudes and those aren't gonna just "die down"
-
don't worry vellfire, the patriarchy will ~ m a g i c a l l y d i s a p p e a r ~, just you wait and see
-
(Yeah I tend to spam the edit button so I often post then realise I left a point out.)
"WE MUST DO SOMETHING ABOUT A SPECIFIC SOCIAL ATTITUDE" is technically fascism by the way. In the end you can't win. Man, all those shades of grey. It's almost like the book title itself is fittingly too topical.
-
"WE MUST DO SOMETHING ABOUT A SPECIFIC SOCIAL ATTITUDE" is technically fascism by the way.
WE NEED TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT SEXISM. that's fascism? cool i'm fine with being a fascist then.
-
activism is fascism. activism is fascism. i... can't go on.
-
Telling someone what they can and can't say? Well yeah. In the end we're all as bad as each other.
"YOU CANNOT HAVE THIS ATTITUDE YOU SHOULD HAVE THIS ONE INSTEAD"
"GOOD PEOPLE DIED FOR YOU TO HAVE THE RIGHT TO SAY A THING"
**someone says a thing you don't like**
"YOU CANNOT SAY THING"
-
Telling someone what they can and can't say? Well yeah. In the end we're all as bad as each other.
"YOU CANNOT HAVE THIS ATTITUDE YOU SHOULD HAVE THIS ONE INSTEAD"
if you seriously think that wanting to stamp out something like sexism in society is fascism then seriously just leave now.
-
I don't want sexism in society, but all "WE HAVE TO TELL EVERYONE TO STOP" means we're as bad as each other.
-
I don't want sexism in society, but all "WE HAVE TO TELL EVERYONE TO STOP" means we're as bad as each other.
no
-
Well... yeah. I guess we're divided. We always will be. I learned years ago that we can't live in harmony or we would've achieved THAT centuries ago.
-
apparently that didn't include learning anything about oppression and alienation
the scariest part of this is that you can't put this down to the naïveté of youth, you've reached 27 years of age with the mindset of a child
jesus fucking christ
-
Fair assessment. I just find it ironic that we can tell someone what they can and can't say and it isn't oppression in its own right. Even telling someone they can't do something bad is oppression.
I'm kinda fucking with you guys, I don't agree with sexism and oppression and never have, but I love bringing that point up to see how people react. Yes, social attitudes towards women even now are capable of being very shitty. Anyone got a good idea how to stop it then? Let's do this.
-

Glad that oppression that fucks with my daily life is so much fun for you then! Since it's just some abstract exercise for you and not something you have to live with at all...glad you can just play around with it and poke and prod for reactions with people because you have the privilege to not have to deal with any of this in any real way.
-
it's okay guys, call off all social justice movements, he was just fooling around. just fooling around with people's feelings. just fooling around with things that actually affect people in fairly horrible ways. i'm laughing, truly, i am.
of course, no one can expect to believe you weren't being serious
-
There are the occasions that men—intellectual men, clever men, engaged men—insist on playing devil's advocate, desirous of a debate on some aspect of feminist theory or reproductive rights or some other subject generally filed under the heading: Women's Issues. These intellectual, clever, engaged men want to endlessly probe my argument for weaknesses, want to wrestle over details, want to argue just for fun—and they wonder, these intellectual, clever, engaged men, why my voice keeps raising and why my face is flushed and why, after an hour of fighting my corner, hot tears burn the corners of my eyes. Why do you have to take this stuff so personally? ask the intellectual, clever, and engaged men, who have never considered that the content of the abstract exercise that's so much fun for them is the stuff of my life.
-
Anyone got a good idea how to stop it then? Let's do this.
really the first step to stopping a social practice, as I think someone said early in the discussion, is to adopt the attitude that it does matter and that the offending practice is not ok.
eg, the civil rights movement. we didn't get to this point because people are innately good or bad, we got here because of the concerted efforts of many people who were not ok with 'letting history take its course'.
it's easy to fall into having a pessimistic view of society, but it's something people ideally should get over as it is antisocial
-

wow you think that caring about social issues and advocating change is OPPRESSION? help help my straight white male pride is being infringed upon!! "even telling someone they can't do something bad is oppression" oh okay hey there little billy i was going to tell you to stop hitting that little girl in your preschool class but i don't want to oppress you. haha and you think you can go around calling women cunts and acting all "HEH" superior and then when you start to realize that you're maybe being a jerk you just play it off as "lol jk i was playin devil's advocate~!!! LET'S DO THIS!" yeah umm.
-
I appreciate that you must go through some shit but if you really have a way to put a stop to it, please tell me how and I will help. It's all well and good saying "this happens, it's bad" but unless you've got viable solutions then ranting more and more is just making you look like, well, someone who rants a lot, and eventually people get tired of lots of words with no action.
Now believe it or not I spent my entire childhood and most of my employed life being given shit by women for being male, a male who has never oppressed another woman in his life, but was tarred with the same brush as the other men who apparently oppressed them in their lives. Hell, one of my friends lost custody of his child because the judge basically favoured the mother, and now pays more than he can technically afford in support. Men are negatively affected by gender division too. It's a circle I don't think is ever going to be broken because there aren't enough people willing enough to quit spinning the damn thing.
I'll agree that there's nothing specifically wrong with telling men to stop oppressing women though.

i keep bringing this up but i'm the only one who sees the connection, apparently
anyway, the whole series is a pretty good read. i don't know why this gets portrayed as a chick thing 'cause i'm pretty sure most dudes (whether they admit it or not) also fantasize about getting abducted to a fancy vampire's estate to live as his erotic My Pet Monster. that's the subtext in most male-driven pulps, basically every Bond movie, i could go on but no.
bunch of fans on the Grey forums did happen to notice codes hidden throughout all three books that will probably be used for unlockables in an as of yet unannounced social/facebook game, so that's something to look forward to.

it wouldn't have if farren didn't frame this topic in the context of WHAT IS WRONG WITH WOMEN/HERE ARE MISOGYNIST JOKES
sorry if i'm a broken record but i'm gonna call this out every time i see it

Vellfire, I was not specifically talking about you, I understand that this stuff pisses you off and you have every right to not tolerate it. This is just like, what, the third topic where we've had a sexism vs. feminism fight? I don't understand why some people (and I mostly mean the other guys) aren't at least trying to avoid pissing eachother off a fight when we've seen this shit happen already.
-
god forbid we have to keep having this fight when this shit keeps popping up. it seriously wouldn't have to come up this often if people didn't keep doing the same things over and over

ahahaha PSI that was some of the dumbest shit I have read on the internet in months. A+

didnt read the thread and im just kind of bemused by the popularity of yet another poorly written book (also its kind of awk when they are talking about "HOW SHADES OF GREY HELPED ME DO **** ** **** W MY HUSBAND FOR FIRST TIME IN 30 YRS" on daytime television and my grandma is in the room and aa aaaaa) but
if it makes anyone feel better, probably (hopefully ((well...(ugh fcuk humanity))) most of the women who enjoy reading this sort of thing would not actually want to be in the situation of the main character/would be disturbed by it "IRL".......idk how to put it, but i mean everyone likes playing call of duty and imagining being hero from time to time but how many people enjoy being an infantryman. or being a knight and having to pee in a ditch while an orc is creeping up to badtouch you. moreover, how many people get into what they previously believed would be their dream job/situation/etc and actually have their fantasies come true? (answer: like 0)
"be careful what you wish for" is a trite saying for a reason.......generally people dont want what they think they want. or what they want is actually horrible IRL and that often what they think is affection/"love"" is really a result of how they were treated as children and mistook for love because they didnt have anything else. and they thankfully realize that and keep it in their dreams
in short humans are really weird and sad animals and i will continue to report your odd ebook sales patterns to my superiors on necron5

oh mellytan basically said it already
but I love the irony about playing high-tech games about simpler times and basically glorify them
I could've said this so much better something about privileged upper-lower-middle class kids who have considerable luxury addicted to games about being completely removed from said luxury. Also fucking post-apocalyptic worlds imagine if their steampunk anime george clooney fantasies came true

So wait guys, am I reading this book or not then?
Because it's pretty cheap at the moment.
Oh wait, no, weekend deal over. Fuck that then. I guess I'll read CONAN THE BARBARIAN instead!!!
(I am playing the CONAN game at the moment and it's mostly about Conan being a jerk and hitting people. Also the first interaction he had with a female in the game was to IMMEDIATELY make a sexjoke at her. I think this game was made by a thirteen year old)

OK, Here is a question. Probably the most important one for THIS SPECIFIC TOPIC and how its quickly branched into sexism and feminism topic. What should be done about this book? What is the the best end goal?
Maybe this is just the way I think but I am a detail and goal oriented person. What needs to be done ABOUT THIS BOOK. Or is the answer nothing? Is this just a topic for us to discuss how bad the book is or something?
Do any of you think "Fifty Shades of Grey" should be banned? Should people who bought it feel guilty for buying it? Is that even something we should concern ourselves with? IS this direct harm from this book being in print and being so popular? Is writing a book like this the equivalent of being a male hitting a female?
Because to me a lot of this isn't actually going anywhere. I actually suspect that all of this conversation has ill defined terms mixed in.
At most this is a largely subjective discussion on what people's attitudes towards this book should be. It comes off as insult and anger pong.
-
it's also cool that for once a pop culture trend acknowledges that women enjoy sex and suddenly it's this huge deal making it a 'viral' sensation / the end of civilization, whereas thousands of terabytes of porn and trashy erotica have existed for men for centuries without anyone batting much of an eye about it
-
Who do you guys think will direct the movie

i don't have time to address your whole post right now so bear that in mind because what i'm about to say is totally minor compared to what you're asking. here it goes: don't refer to people as "males" and "females". you can use those words as adjectives (male baseball player, for example), but don't call people males or females or a female or w/e because it's dehumanizing as fuck and it's also a HUGE red flag for misogynists. seriously, go read something written by an MRA they will almost exclusively refer to women as females. so avoid doing this.

I understand why using the terms male and female are considered dehumanizing. They are largely considered technical terms and are often used in scientific papers, government forms, and lawyer speak. But... but I like technical terms... they seem more... EXACT or something.
-
I also should clarify, when I say banned, I'm referring to either legally (which I believe can only happen on the state level, in the US, and only ban the SALE of the book) or "socially/culturally" banned. Which people do anything outside of legal power to keep the book out of people hands?
I don't really like either form because at their core they are censorship. But I am curious about Salt's thoughts.

they also make a significant amount of women incredibly uncomfortable and they're frequently used in the context of treating women as if they're some animal species to be studied by men. i've noticed it a million times, misogynists almost ALWAYS use it in their writing about women, seriously every horribly sexist thing i can remember reading lately uses females instead of women. it's also amazing how many times they say females while using men to refer to men (instead of males), which just underscores the whole thing.

Also, Male/Female terms are very "neutral" sounding (this just came to my mind).
But yeah when I look at any issue I separate myself as best as possible from any of my more direct experiences related the discussion of important topics unless I just cite something merely as an interesting story rather than something conductive to progress. So yeah, I don't directly relate to the "males" or "females" in my example in my post. I fail to do separate these experiences many times, but I still try. My direct experiences are anecdotes. They are piss poor as a justification for pretty much any real change.
Also, peoples minds DO generally auto-dehumanize anyone outside of their circle of peers/authority/dependents. In fact, its considered weird by most people to humanize people that are out of your circle and have no relation until you meet them and get to know them.
Example, if you read a long list of dead soldiers names and were told they died yesterday and then were reminded that your friend from high school got drunk and drove off a cliff and killed himself 20 years ago you'll be more mentally effected by the story of your friends death.
This is me self-analyzing my own post sort of. Trying to determine why I subconsciously used the terminology that I did.

You cannot effectively change the way people think. I definitely do not want to be pulled into this black hole of an argument again where everything I say makes me a "terrible piece of shit".
That argument you keep railing at. that desire to change peoples concepts of male and female and how people present themselves about it, you can't change that. Somebody compared activism in the civil rights movement to your arguments. They're not the same. You want to change a perception, the civil rights movement wanted to change action. The fact that a people were physically (PHYSICALLY IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART) being segregated and divided, forced to be treated like animals by legislation and law enforcement.
Thats not the same as your argument. You want to phase out hurtful words and concepts. This can't and won't happen. Maybe you don't see this shit, maybe thats the problem and I'm probably wasting my fucking time again because I hate this goddamn argument. you people are just as terrible as any fundamentalists or racists with your pre-concieved notions of who is priviledged and who isn't. That is a goddamn defense mechinism argument and it only belittles the person your speaking to and invalidates their arguments. Its petty as shit and if you wanna talk about childish, that is fucking childish
Racism still hasn't stopped and it won't. The FCC and most lawmakers have pretty much stopped most blatant forms of it being presented in media and in the workplace. But every single ignorant piece of shit will still go home mutter and sling the word "nigger" and lace their "new world" politics with hidden racism. Because thats what they are and they choose to not give a fuck. That is their right.
You cannot change that. You can have it where they're fined or locked up or ostracized but if they want to hate you or say stupid shit, they're gonna do it. Fuck, you can make it hard as hell to where the only time they can voice that terrible shit is in their dreams but the minute they get the chance. The minute they can find a way to validate their arguments or catch you alone where no one is going to hear it and protect you from it, its going to come out. And guess what? You'll be weaker then.
Because you got what you wanted, mysogyny is over. There is no black and white, no men or women, no rich or poor everyones perfectly equal and the same. You get to live that boring ass sheltered life with no "bitches" or "cunts" or "dicks" or "faggots". Shit you won't know hatred, you won't know how to defend yourself from it or how to react responsibly to it. And when you hear that shit again, when those fucked up pieces of shit get to come back out (because they will eventually thats a part of who we are) you REALLY won't know what to do again and it WILL fuck you up. If not you then your children because just like your generation is dealing with right now they will be far weaker they will not know how to deal with terrible ass things and terrible ass people when the time comes because you got what you wanted.
Go ahead and use this as an argument for mysogyny or tell me what the fuck you think I am. I honestly don't give a shit. You have absolutely no right to tell anyone what they think. You have absolutely no right to call someone something like that when you don't know them. You're weak. I sit here and watch you pick out words and fucking cry about it and argue about it. I'm damn sure you don't do that shit in real life. I'm damn sure you sit there every day with your mouth shut and you don't say shit because you're afraid people will gang up on you and tell you how ignorant and terrible you are just like you're doing right now.
Being a woman doesn't give you fuck all right to act like that. You're just spreading some kind of miltant nuetral gender perception of identity which is counteractive to human existance. Its fucking robotic. Its anti-emotional. Its plastic. Don't muddle my opinions with disdain for shit either because you don't fucking know me.
-
I'm done with this place though, atleast for awhile.
Its dead here. Its boring. No one has anything interesting to say anymore or to talk about or to discuss. Its this constant cycle of intellectual persecution and belittlement. If its not that its stupid ass obscure early 90s pixelated images or some mundane bullshit. All the people that brought flavor to this place are gone and the only thing left is your insulting ass rhetoric. None of you think for yourselves anymore. No more personal opinions. You're all the same goddamn person and anyone else is terrible. Its disgusting.
bye bye and yeah good riddance for me you get to sit here and keep on with this shit to whomever forgets why this place sucks ass now and decides to comeback for a very brief stint.
-
I'm cool

So there's a significant difference between calling a gender females or women you're saying? I thought this was pretty innocent. I get when people say it like "me and my female are doing this or whatever" but otherwise really? Dehumanizing seems extreme

nevermind i see it was addressed since i wrote the post

is there a way we can get around this without having to argue about feminism in every topic. maybe do it over pm or something. im not saying its not important but otherwise so many topics will just turn into the same thing. cause its mostly males in a lol gaming community so they are probably often going to say things wrong that need to be addressed but at the same time we dont want to ruin every topic either. just saying

wait a minute
is this real
“Does this mean you’re going to make love to me tonight, Christian?” Holy shit. Did I just say that? His mouth drops open slightly, but he recovers quickly.
“No, Anastasia it doesn’t. Firstly, I don’t make love. I fuck… hard. Secondly, there’s a lot more paperwork to do, and thirdly, you don’t yet know what you’re in for. You could still run for the hills. Come, I want to show you my playroom.”
My mouth drops open. Fuck hard! Holy shit, that sounds so… hot. But why are we looking at a playroom? I am mystified.
“You want to play on your Xbox?” I ask. He laughs, loudly.
“No, Anastasia, no Xbox, no Playstation. Come.”… Producing a key from his pocket, he unlocks yet another door and takes a deep breath.
“You can leave anytime. The helicopter is on stand-by to take you whenever you want to go, you can stay the night and go home in the morning. It’s fine whatever you decide.”
“Just open the damn door, Christian.”
He opens the door and stands back to let me in. I gaze at him once more. I so want to know what’s in here. Taking a deep breath I walk in.
And it feels like I’ve time-traveled back to the sixteenth century and the Spanish Inquisition.
Holy fuck.”

“Let me ask you something first. Do you want a regular vanilla relationship with no kinky fuckery at all?"
My mouth drops open. "Kinky fuckery?" I squeak.
"Kinky fuckery."
"I can't believe you said that.'
"Well, I did. Answer me," he says calmly.
I flush. My inner goddess is down on bended knee with her hands clasped in supplication begging me.
"I like your kinky fuckery," I whisper.”
-
“He grabs me suddenly and yanks me up against him, one hand at my back holding me to him and the other fisting in my hair.
"You're one challenging woman," He kisses me, forcing my lips apart with his tongue, taking no prisoners.
"It's taking all my self-control not to fuck you on the hood of this car, just to show you that you're mine, and if I want to buy you a fucking car, I'll buy you a fucking car," he growls.”
-
Yes Sir, Mr. Draper
-
“His head turns fractionally toward me, his eyes darkest slate. I bite my lip.
“Oh, fuck the paperwork,” he growls. He lunges at me, pushing me against the wall of the elevator. Before I know it, he’s got both of my hands in one of his in a vice-like grip above my head, and he’s pinning me to the wall using his hips. Holy shit. His other hand grabs my ponytail and yanks down, bringing my face up, and his lips are on mine. It’s only just not painful. I moan into his mouth, giving his tongue an opening. He takes full advantage, his tongue expertly exploring my mouth. I have never been kissed like this.”
-
Incidentally, I have also written a story where a character forwent paperwork for sex
So what I'm saying is E.L.J. is a fucking thief.
And I'm floored.
By this fuckery.

“He's naked except for those soft ripped jeans, top button casually undone. Jeez, he looks so freaking hot. My subconscious is frantically fanning herself, and my inner goddess is swaying and writhing to some primal carnal rhythm.”
“No. No!” he says.
“I . . .” He looks wildly around the room. For inspiration? For divine intervention? I don’t know.
“You can’t go. Ana, I love you!”
“I love you, too, Christian, it’s just—”
“No . . . no!” he says in desperation and puts both hands on his head. “Christian . . .”
“No,” he breathes, his eyes wide with panic, and suddenly he drops to his knees in front of me, head bowed, long-fingered hands spread out on his thighs. He takes a deep breath and doesn’t move. What?
“Christian, what are you doing?”
He continues to stare down, not looking at me.
“Christian! What are you doing?”
My voice is high-pitched. He doesn’t move.
“Christian, look at me!” I command in panic. His head sweeps up without hesitation, and he regards me passively with his cool gray gaze—he’s almost serene . . . expectant.
Holy Fuck . . . Christian. The submissive.”
any of these could be fake and I wouldn't know
-
“This is a man in need. His fear is naked and obvious, but he's lost. . . Somewhere in his darkness.
His eyes wide and bleak and tortured. I can soothe him. Join him briefly in the darkness and bring him into the light.”

a) raising awareness for something is wrong and
not one person here lacks awareness of mysogyny. They are perfectly aware of it and she's railing on that shit to the point of unhealthy obsession. Complete condemnation and defensiveness of petty word usage and concepts of gender. It is really really really really annoying. regardless of who in the hell is saying it female or male (oh shit I did just do that). Its annoying in the first place and the fact that she uses her womanhood to devalue the opinions of others and persistantly force condescending arguments on everyone else because they've got a penis and they're priveledged is even worse. Its fucking terrible. I cannot understand how A) you people can sit here and accept her saying that shit and B) go along with it and propel her arguments.
Fuck if you want to sit on the internet and do that shit then go to an all women forum where you can actually talk to people who can argue with you. Here, you're just trying to provoke people into an argument where you can act shitty to anyone who disagrees. I sat here and tried to ignore your bullshit while you kept trying to goad me into an argument.
b) that we should be forever ignorant
No one on here is ignorant. Saying that is shitty. Fuck, the fact that just about if not everyone on here displays a base amount of concern and knowledge about the issue itself shows otherwise.
the index calling the ringfinger an asshole is detrimental to what actually even matters, what they're both pointing at.
c)that we cant change people through education
If you want to educate someone you have to A) realize if that person is even willing to learn and B) talk to them on a relatable level. Saying THIS IS WHAT YOU SHOULD THINK BECAUSE ANY OTHER WAY IS IMMORAL AND WHAT YOU THINK DOESNT MATTER BECAUSE YOU GOT IT EASY doesn't do jack shit but get you completely ignored and despised.
d) that its just physical not about behavior.
I'd fucking love if everyone got along just dandy and didn't treat each other like shit but its a part of life. Animals do it, people do it, fuck even plants do it. Bigger tree sucks the sun from the smaller one. Of course an enlightened person can learn to change that train of thought and pursue different behavior but you telling them to won't make that happen. Its something they have to realize for themselves.
Personal preservation, independance, and resiliance are some of the most important human traits. By demanding society conform to what you personally want. By commanding people to change because you don't like it. That shit wears those things away, it devalues them, and people are far less likely to realize them.
Its kind of the same vein of thinking as public smoking, loud noises, stupid thoughts and expression are a form of pollution. If you want to change all these things, change all these people. Whats public anymore? Wheres your freedom? How do you learn to realize what you should and shouldn't expose yourself to? Its no ones right to clean those things up for you.
To me thats just as bad as the fundamentalist right wanting to constrict the actions of homosexuals or make kids pray in schools or tell women what they can or can't do to their bodies. Its the other side of the same damn coin. If you want your right to do certain shit you have to respect the other viewpoint. Even if its dumb.
And I'm going between saying trying to change people that don't want to be changed is wrong and flooding this forum in feminist pre-conceptions and personal vendettas with closed ears is wrong. I know it. They're pretty much unrelated.
It goes back to intent. This is a place for education and understanding right? Then if you want to actually talk to people then you've got to make an effort to understand their intent. Fuck if I'm not gonna use every single word I can find to express what I think or wanna say. If you don't like it, then ignore it. Kaworu didn't call anyone a cunt but himself. He used the damn word. Oh fuck if it ain't my right to say that I don't care. By railing on that stuff you're limiting language and expression if you really want genders to not matter then the best way to deal with that shit is to understand its how people speak not what they say or who is saying it.
"You can't know what people intend" is a bullshit argument too. Thats the very first element of language and the whole reason said shit exists. If someone says something and you don't know what it means then ask them to clarify but I'm PRETTY SURE everyone here is more than capable of that and this language policing goddamn net crusader shit is awful, draining, and incredibly boring.
-
Calling someone a bitch and saying the word aren't the same. You'd realistically go out on the street and hear some dude call his gf that, you might say something you might not. But I can bet you not a soul on here would say fuck all to a dude using it in emphasis or a woman using it towards another woman or in emphasis.
Its not right. Its shitty. People do it. Language has turned a derogatory word in to commonplace description. Thats what its become though, for decades. I'm not saying its not anyones right to say it sucks and hope someone listens but if they don't give a shit or think different what do you do? keep going like anyone else would. Cus you can't change the world no matter how much you want to. Or you can just keep pissing into the wind until its all over you, everyone else and you run flat out of piss.

There's this book
about fucking
and the writing
is ridiculous
in a kind of banal way
that becomes amazing
given the context
that literally millions of people are reading and talking about it
-
yeah I haven't read it but I posted a youtube to a comedy skit with gilbert godfrey reading parts of it aloud like an audiobook and it was absolutely hilarious. The writing itself is pretty hilarious but he makes it so much better.
Thats the only thing with gilbert godfrey I've ever actually liked. Whoever decided to use him to do that is brilliant.
CLIT-OR-IOUS

I think it's hilarious that Farren started this topic due to his faux concern for women, and it ended with him practically having a nervous breakdown out of anger as he tries to destroy the only actual feminist on the site.
-
I'm done with this place though, atleast for awhile.
There's an English saying that goes: if you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. You seem to have some kind of problem with the fact that people sometimes disagree with you. Your little speech was a completely absurd reaction, totally out of proportion, and it makes me think you just can't stand being disagreed with or being in a discussion at all. And when someone pushes back and challenges you, your reaction is to try as hard as possible to hurt someone. You did it at the start with your stupid misogynistic jokes to punish women for being so stupid to buy that book (you're such a great feminist), and you did it just now when you exploded against Vellfire. That's not how you conduct yourself when you're over the age of 11.
If that makes you "done with this place", so be it.

nah dude its not got shit to do about heat. this place has been mostly feminist for a very long time. which I honestly didn't ever have a problem with and pretty much gained knowledge from.
like I said you're boring as hell, you suck the life out of this place. your attitude is detrimental to any kind of discussion about this shit and if theres any kind of discussion about women at all you swarm all over it with your oppressive way of presenting your opinions. any other viewpoint is "destructive towards women" and they don't give fuckall in your eyes because you don't see eye to eye. how many different people have you done this to? four now? five?
Yeah I'm probably gonna leave for awhile. Its not because I'm upset or got upset I'm just tired of this shit. Theres pretty much nothing to gain from this place anymore. No more discussion. no more new media to talk about. Very rarely is there even more media from anyone here. If you actually got any new people to come here you'd just run them off with shit like this.
Just gonna keep truckin' on and hatin women fuck I might start a he man woman hatin club cus I'm such a mysogynist pig
have fun btw talking to vell when you two are the only ones left in this place
-
stupid misogynistic jokes to punish women for being so stupid to buy that book
I'm going to make fun of sheeple for doing stupid shit I don't care what gender they are what color they are what sex they have a preference to
If I have to sit there and say mysogynist ass shit to get someone to realize something is mysogynist I'll damn well do it. btw an older woman who was reading the book thought they were funny as shit but that doesn't matter because she's a brainwashed product of an oppresive society says some condescending bullshit you found on the internet
-
Also ban my account so can't come back here too. I'd honestly rather spend more of my time around dumbass people they're much easier to get along with.
-
Its annoying in the first place and the fact that she uses her womanhood to devalue the opinions of others and persistantly force condescending arguments on everyone else because they've got a penis and they're priveledged is even worse.
woah nice transphobia (not ever penis haver is a man idiot)
-
nah dude its not got shit to do about heat. this place has been mostly feminist for a very long time.
lol if you think this also
-
Very rarely is there even more media from anyone here. If you actually got any new people to come here you'd just run them off with shit like this.
Actually we ran off a really good new member when we had to have a fuckin several page discussion on why it wasn't okay to say the word fag. Guess what, that member was on my side on that.
-
nah dude its not got shit to do about heat. this place has been mostly feminist for a very long time.
excuse me but just because you consider yourself to be a feminist doesn't mean that everybody has to agree with you about everything. it also doesn't mean you get a free pass because "we're on the same side".
like I said you're boring as hell, you suck the life out of this place. your attitude is detrimental to any kind of discussion about this shit and if theres any kind of discussion about women at all you swarm all over it with your oppressive way of presenting your opinions.
I'm sorry you think that way, but that's just not true. before your breakdown I made two replies in this topic, both of which weren't even about feminism in particular, but about the usefulness of social movements in general. they weren't even aimed at you.
and you spent like 20 pages having a good, proper discussion with vellfire in another topic. so don't tell me people don't have a proper attitude around here. I really think you just don't like being disagreed with. you don't like being told that certain things can be considered sexist or wrong by other people. it's not something people say to HURT YOU, but to hopefully try and foster some more understanding and empathy.
-
One point though is that it is draining turning every discussion into the same debate.
is there a way we can get around this without having to argue about feminism in every topic. maybe do it over pm or something. im not saying its not important but otherwise so many topics will just turn into the same thing. cause its mostly males in a lol gaming community so they are probably often going to say things wrong/misogynist or whatever that need to be addressed but at the same time we dont want to ruin every topic either. just saying
-
sorry, but what was this topic going to be? farren is the one who framed it in the context of WOMEN and then posted some misogynist jokes and i called him out on it. there was no where else for it to go. it wasn't even a topic anyway, it was farren just pretending to be worried about misogyny while perpetuating it himself. there wasn't much of a discussion to be had based on that.
last time i checked most of our threads aren't about feminism. it doesn't even come up. even ones i post in. so why is it that every time i call someone out on misogyny suddenly every thread is "turning into one about feminism"? it wouldn't be a discussion if people would just recognize when they're being misogynistic instead of arguing about how their sexist jokes are just "ironic" as if that wasn't equally as bad and doing the same things. these arguments are just the dying gasps of misogyny clinging to these forums, sorry if they're troubling you but they aren't as frequent as you seem to think they are. maybe they just get on your nerves in particular or something and make you think they're everywhere. the thing is, taking this to PM would do nothing. farren's not going to realize or admit that his jokes were sexist as fuck and that they weren't acceptable. but, other people lurking in this thread might. that's why it's important to NOT take this shit to PM.
-
Yeah this one was definitely predetermined to go down this path.
I'm not around enough to have a subjective view on it so I'll believe you that it probably is just the two topics I've seen.
Farren you are being dumb though. Getting all furious cause someone calls you out then saying all of the membership is the same, which is blatantly untrue. I think everyone has disagreed with each other a million times that's why it's a forum for discussion.
-
that's why it's important to NOT take this shit to PM.
fao everybody: write this out 100 times because this is very important
-
let's protest this book not because of the themes but because it's a shittily written book
-
let's protest this book not because of the themes but because it's a shittily written book
that does seem to be the case yes
-
it wouldn't be a discussion if people would just recognize when they're being misogynistic instead of arguing about how their sexist jokes are just "ironic" as if that wasn't equally as bad and doing the same things
the fact that this is a trend should reveal something to us!
-
the film will star robert patensen as his own bdsm slave, i love it already
-
I would pay to see robert pattinson (patensen??) torture himself.
-
ps: every single time there's a FAMOUS MUST-READ fiction book it seems it's horribly written. at least, based on what I've heard. like the last time I actually read one of those must-read books was the Da Vinci Code and it was just awful.
-
I used to think that also and thought the popular ones are for people who don't really like reading/like chapters with 2 pages but then I read the Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and it's brilliant.
-
at the bookstore, I was happy to see that this summer was the first time in at least 5 years they didn't have Atlas Shrugged prominently displayed among the Summer Reading (read about looters and obomunists at the beach) but then I found this shrine

is it wrong of me to dislike ayn rand simply because everyone who follows her ideology acts like a self-entitled prick with "perfect" logic? idk. i've always had a hard time trying to grasp what she's trying to say in her "books"/"philosophy" or whatever, but i'm not educated (smart) enough to really understand WHAT'S WRONG with it. it's always just been a headache for me trying to debate with an objectivist and their only arguments for everything is to throw an ayn rand quote that doesn't make any sense (to me) at me
-
that's because that is her philosophy
-
it doesn't make any sense, it's all gibberish. the name objectivist is a joke because the "objective morality" that the entire philosophy relies upon stems from an entirely subjective and frankly ignorant and antisocial interpretation of society. there are also a ton of really awful and damning quotes you can pull from atlas shrugged, because it's really not a very well-written book despite what people often say and it's full of awkward, inhuman dialogue
-

summary of ayn rand's philosophy: fuck you, got mine
that's all you need to know. her and her cult of objectivists are awful.
-
also yeah here's how badly written atlas shrugged is: contains a speech given by a man that takes three hours to read out loud
that's also probably why they won't make any more movies based on it (since they only did PART ONE or whatever) because from what i remember reading she required legally before she died that if any movies were made of it they had to keep that speech in in its entirety so part three or w/e of the series would literally just be a movie of that speech
here's the speech if you've never seen it http://galtse.cx/, don't read it tho since it's three hours of bullshit
-
there are also a ton of really awful and damning quotes you can pull from atlas shrugged
not to mention straight from the horse's mouth (this is a burn on horses)
i can't stress enough that ayn rand was a shite who advanced a morally bankrupt ideology
-
I read one of her books for a high school english class. Anthem. It actually wasn't terrible story-wise. but I think I thought it was OK because I like dystopian fiction a lot.
The ending was extremely boring though and there were parts that could have been written a bit more clearly. I think it might be one of her shortest books so this doesn't say much, but if I were to base my opinion of her work ENTIRELY from this 1 short book I'd say she is a mediocre writer.
As for the message of this particular book, it did not come off as a book pushing objectivism but a reactionary book railing against collectivism and praising individualism. I actually like individualism.
-
Ayn Rand's favorite vidcons: Final Fantasy The After Years and Metal Gear Solid 4
-
Never heard of the after years. But I understand the MGS4 reference. It was just stuffed with over long speeches.
-
is it wrong of me to dislike ayn rand simply because everyone who follows her ideology acts like a self-entitled prick with "perfect" logic?
Not wrong at all.

Ayn Rand was basically an ultra-capitalist. Her philosophy is aimed at promoting capitalism from an economic model to a perspective of life itself.
Her philosophy basically states that everybody should care only about themselves (or more precisely: everyone should pursue exclusively their own happiness). She writes that an organism's only goal is to survive, the means to which are of secondary importance. Everything besides yourself is an externality whose interests are void. So if you see a kid walking down the street with candy, and you're able to take it without getting caught, you should do it. The kid's interests are, after all, void.
You'd be forgiven for having a hard time understanding any of it; you probably expect an ethical philosophy to have some kind of moral basis. It's a completely savage mindset that not only goes against human nature (because hard as it may seem, humans are actually wired to care for one another) but also against everything we built our societies on. The reason we're no longer hunter-gatherers is because we were able to intelligently and collectively work together.
It's also universally agreed that it doesn't work as an economics model. The reason why the US and Europe and Japan were all able to develop at all is because they had a strong, protectionist state. The state is an extremely big financier of the corporate sector and does a lot of research and development (the reason you and I are able to talk with each other is because mostly US institutions such as MIT, which developed much of the infrastructure of the internet before Bill Gates ran with it and became fantastically rich). A capitalist system as Rand envisions it would essentially have no state to speak of. If you want an example, look at Africa. Most African countries have very little in the way of a state, they have no possibility to engage in protectionism, and there's no public R&D. Which is mostly why Africa looks the way it does today. Completely unlimited capitalism, while disastrous for us normal human beings, would in the long run also be terrible for the business sector because it would destroy the economy, which is why big business doesn't donate any money to Ron Paul's presidential campaign (the main adherent of the objectivist philosophy today—even going so far as naming his own son Rand).
As a rule, capitalism leads to strong inequality. The less rules there are, the greater the inequality. If I were asked "what's wrong with objectivism", the answer is really simple: it's savagery. It's about caring only about yourself.
tl;dr: Let's say the kid across the street gets cancer. What would be the better approach? Either 1) the entire neighborhood (or city, state, etc.) pitches in with some money to get him treated and cured, or 2) everybody ignores him, thus saving some money, and he dies. Well, if you answered the latter, congratulations: you're an objectivist.
-
Never heard of the after years. But I understand the MGS4 reference. It was just stuffed with over long speeches.
I haven't played the game, but I think the MGS4 reference has more to do with the fact that it's Rand's philosophy come true. No more state power, just corporations fighting each other, using human beings as cannon fodder, as a beautiful example of the free market at its finest.
If the US were suddenly abolished as a state, what you'd see is corporate power finding some other way to fight wars. Such as by hiring contractors. And then you'd get an image kind of like MGS4, except instead of corporations fighting each other, the targets would probably be human beings who happen to live on a resourceful piece of land.
-
I read one of her books for a high school english class.
that's absurd. I had a couple conservative and not very good literature teachers, but thankfully no one ever made me read Rand's garbage during those rough years.
actually, the difference seems to be that they were conservative and also very religious in the conservative American sense, whereas Rand's stuff kind of necessitates atheism
rand's philosophy goes against against everything we built our societies on
I disagree, this is very much based upon our society! rand didn't invent this, she gathered together what was happening at the time/is still happening today and turned it into what she saw as a moral philosophy.

Ah I see. But the US was still a state in MGS4 wasn't it? But yeah, I could see that happening if corporations were suddenly given freedom to literally do whatever the fuck they wanted and had no nation to wage wars through.
that's absurd. I had a couple conservative and not very good literature teachers, but thankfully no one ever made me read Rand's garbage during those rough years.

yeah, she was a conservative. but she was religious/traditionalist oddly enough. I did not like her, she picked favorites and did not like me.

thanks dada for replying to me and putting it in a way that i can understand. i'm definitely against the ideas that ayn rand has, but it's always been hard for me to express in words why, especially when i try to talk to any objectivist friends and point out my problems with what they're saying. usually what happens is they'll throw a bunch of words at me and an ayn rand quote explaining the virtues of selfishness, and i won't have anything to say against that. sometimes i see someone just walking around carrying ATLAS SHRUGGED or THE FOUNTAINHEAD, just to impress people by the fact that they can read large books (which just looks like someone being a pretentious, dumb jerk in my opinion)
i need to start reading more books into philosophy/economics, because this stuff really interests me. i just don't have as much time as i used to to look into it as much and the language sort of gets to me.
sorry for completely derailing the topic into one about objectivism. it's been really interesting
-
I flush. My inner goddess is down on bended knee with her hands clasped in supplication begging me.
"bring back g&d" I whisper.

if you're reading about economics, only read books about why capitalism is the worst
and carrying around the fountainhead is like talking about nietzsche in public
-
I disagree, this is very much based upon our society! rand didn't invent this, she gathered together what was happening at the time/is still happening today and turned it into what she saw as a moral philosophy.
Any modern society has some degree of statism or public cooperation. It's true that the US is a fantastically greedy society, but it's still quite outdone by Rand's radical vision.
I don't understand, why are you saying africa look the way it does?
What the modern Western societies have is state-capitalism, i.e. a capitalist system in which the state provides market protectionism, research and development, corporate subsidies, et cetera. African countries have a state so devoid of any real meaning that it's an example of the type of capitalism Ron Paul would like to see in the US. Not only does that destroy the livelihoods of the people, it also prevents any meaningful development from taking place. If the US were to turn into such a society overnight, it wouldn't just be bad for the people, but the economy would gradually be ruined as well.
-
I might be a bit out of whack by saying it goes against "everything we built our societies on", but Rand still sort of asserts that everybody should be a serial backstabber at the moment it becomes feasible (she calls this the "primary moral obligation") and do nothing for the other unless there's something to gain from it. That's just not how people are, thankfully. If you go back to the years of misery before the French Revolution, you might see something like this, but it's not exactly something to aspire towards.
But I do actually think it goes against human nature. We're hardwired to care for each other's well-being. That's why we help each other out. Not because our cognitive faculties tell us there's something to be gained from it in the future.
-

um I saw some documentary on pbs about like arguing for capitalism and it was a swedish guy and he used Hong Kong as an example of a place with like no regulations pure capitalism and there are probably huge holes in his argument but I was wondering if anyone saw it so they could tear into it
but yeah I think the only real reason for any progress has nothing to do with philosophy economic systems it's just random smart fucks get born and probably have Asperger's and invent everything ever. And also aren't particularly motivated by money
it did make some argument like nobody had a refrigerator but rich people but because of competition now virtually everyone has a fridge and for way cheaper. Also computers advancing as much as they did. But this guy sounded like Ayn Rand/Ron Paul the more pure capitalism you have the more progress/average quality of life there will be and obviously 100% unrestricted capitalism we would have a new iPad every 2 seconds or whatever his idea of progress is
Edit: oh it was based on the ideas of Milton Friedman, somebody rip into his philosophy plz
Edit: Basically same as with Ayn Rand, help me articulate why I should loathe this person

and you spent like 20 pages having a good, proper discussion with vellfire in another topic. so don't tell me people don't have a proper attitude around here. I really think you just don't like being disagreed with
don't tell me you're talking about the one where I got called an idiot for not giving a shit about some pre-written arguments about a white males viewpoints and devolved into a woman blowing two mens heads off because HEH THATS EFFECTIVELY THE SAME THING AS AN IRONIC JOKE
She sat here and fucking goaded me into an argument. couldn't even ignore something that wasn't personally directed at her but when you tell me because of my gender and skin color I don't fucking matter I'm supposed to just deal with that? Anyone else is just supposed to accept that?
I honestly do not give a damn what anyone thinks to the point of getting upset. its the terrible censorship attitude around here that defeats the very purpose of this place and more and more people tailing you two because it just makes "so much more sense when you want to tell people what they should and shouldn't say" with you're humorless and void well to do way of looking at the world
its fuckin boring
This discussion in any form is just going to devolve into both your egos and I really don't want to watch it anymore. If you can't atleast delete any posts that are going to end up in this same manner than I'm serious delete my damn account I fuckin hate this place now.
Delete my fuckin jokes delete her fucking egomaniacal self gratification delete it all its all fucking garbage I don't care.

it's a forum!
but when you tell me because of my gender and skin color I don't fucking matter I'm supposed to just deal with that? Anyone else is just supposed to accept that?
I don't see where this is being said to you by anyone. Nobody's saying (or should be saying) that you "don't matter" because of your gender or skin color. If you're referring to the last big argument we had, the message there was that every type of oppression is different. So racial discrimination is different from homophobia, and even different kinds of racism are different from one another. Suffering from one type of oppression doesn't make you an expert on another. That doesn't mean you "don't matter" if you don't fall in a particular category, but it does mean you're not a primary authority. So if you're a black man, you may think you know all there is to know about misogyny, because you too have suffered from systematic oppression, but you'd be wrong. Only a lifetime of experiences, as well as the knowledge that you can never escape it by virtue of your being, can really truly make someone understand.
its the terrible censorship attitude around here that defeats the very purpose of this place
Nothing is being censored except people who willingly engage in extremely offensive/racist/etc language, like that other guy who recently got banned (thankfully already forgot his name).
Whatever you post is subject to being replied to. That includes people saying that you shouldn't say something. But that's not censorship. That's a request. You're free to say no.
-
I mean if you were making jokes about black people, and some guy came in and said "hey, that's really racist, could you please stop doing that?", would you also call it censorship? Or telling you to stop using the word "nigger"? That's not censorship, it's a request for basic empathy. Some people don't like it when you use that kind of language. It's the same with those jokes you made earlier. Yeah, we get that they're jokes. That's not the point. If someone is offended by them, then the right thing to do is evaluate the claim and decide either to do something or to refuse.
I don't get why you're getting so upset by any of this, all of this seems fairly normal to me.
-
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kowloon_Walled_City
yeah but kowloon is awesome
-
This does bring up an interesting point though Dada, I think I can come up with scenarios where someone complaining about being offended is being... well... ridiculous. Of course they are relatively few and far between but I can think of a specific example. There was a person that constantly said he was offended by my casual foul language back at the dorms in my college when ever I was near him. (I wasn't they only one the cursed, but I cursed a lot) He was the straitlaced religious type. (he was generally annoying to most people there actually, sort of felt bad for him)
I remember one time I was playing Bioshock 2 on a computer in the main computer lab area of the school and he was behind me playing some korean MMORPG (it was one of my school's bi-monthly LAN parties and people sometimes went to the commons to play games on the school computers with other people) Every time I'd die and reload I'd curse (sometimes loudly, sometimes under my breath) and he would be tapping on my shoulder or tell me I'm being offensive or something. I'd tell him that I just instinctively curse sometimes when I die and that he was being silly for getting offended because it wasn't targeting anyone and that cursing relieves my mental tension (it does).
I'll admit though this isn't even REMOTELY on par with saying the word nigger or being sexist but still.
EDIT: NVM I just reread your post. You said "the right thing to do is evaluate the claim and decide either to do something or to refuse." I must of skimmed over that or something.
-
I mean if you were making jokes about black people, and some guy came in and said "hey, that's really racist, could you please stop doing that?", would you also call it censorship? Or telling you to stop using the word "nigger"? That's not censorship, it's a request for basic empathy. Some people don't like it when you use that kind of language. It's the same with those jokes you made earlier. Yeah, we get that they're jokes. That's not the point. If someone is offended by them, then the right thing to do is evaluate the claim and decide either to do something or to refuse.
I don't get why you're getting so upset by any of this, all of this seems fairly normal to me.
This isn't a one on one discussion. If I'm talking to someone individually and they don't like something then I'd be more than willing to shut up. If I'm talking publically and someone doesn't like something its not their right to tell me to watch my mouth because they don't like it. A) I don't care or I wouldn't speak freely at all B) it is censorship
do you write every rap artist telling him your upset that he uses mysogonistic words in his work or every dumbass comedian that calls women ho's. No you don't this is a childish approach to something controvercial. Its selfish as hell and like I said, egomaniacal. Thinking every person you don't know or aren't personally speaking to should watch their language around you limits language and expression.
If you start to do this then there is absolutely no ground for free expression, anyone can walk in and tell you to shut the fuck up. You're athiest? keep your citicisms of religion to yourself. You don't like how alot of black culture is completely self-destructive? You're not black stop talking.
Also yes, I do make black jokes but I only do it to black people and in a way that I am endearing myself to them. I do the same thing with latinos sometimes but in a friendly jousting manner. It removes alot of tension and makes open discussion much more easier and unoffensive.
Inris not the same. He wasn't trying to articulate anything he was just being racist. And to deal with that is to not even aknowledge what he's saying because he's racist not to sit there and overanalyze his stupid bullshit you're falling right into step that way.
That is the point I'm trying to make. you two are doing nothing but promoting tension with these worldviews and overt sensitivity to language. you have to find concepts offensive not language or you're just another tight ass that absolutely no one cares to listen to.
That doesn't mean you "don't matter" if you don't fall in a particular category, but it does mean you're not a primary authority.
people don't "fall into categories". almost every girl I personally know at home is a consistant victim of mysogyny and they don't even realize it. I'm not talking about both of your concept of societal oppression which makes women victims either I'm talking about real physical fucking mysogyny from real mysogynist men. Its not even because they don't have an access to the information they just do not care. Yeah they get they're being mistreated on some base level but they don't pursue it because of the relationships said shit is involved with. You can sit there and tell them they're being mistreated or tell the dude he's doing it but certain people don't give a shit. they just don't care.
this goddamn book is a form of mysogyny but older women everywhere are still reading it. they don't know what they're reading and if you sat there and told them what it was pretty much all of them would probably still read it.
That shit is absolutely horrible but when you assume shit like "certain people are a victim of psychological conditioning from birth and as a product of which, they are capable of doing horrible things to themselves. They can't help it and its not your right to point that out or claim to have some sort of insight on it when you can see it and they can't."
that is horrible. you aren't putting any faith in those peoples individuality or preserverance and you're making general assumptions.
I never claimed to be an authority on shit. I don't care enough. I don't study it but if I don't agree with someone who thinks they are an authority I'm going to say when I think they're full of shit and being oppressive with their sensitivity.
-
man i thought the point was that mysognistic jokes really just aren't appropriate in a discussion about gender equality, idk about censorship (i always thought censorship meant like a mod editing your posts so that everything you said was gone or something, like actually beeping it out except it's on the internet)
but hey ignore me, i'm just a guy who's not a fan of ayn rand fans
-
topic wasn't about gender equality it was about a mysogynistic book lots of women are reading, the jokes were highlighting the mysogyny in the book via self inflicted mysogyny. The gender equality started later on because of said joke I'm assuming.
which honestly I should have realized that people here don't appreciate that kind of humor or any kind of humor you have to look at sidelonged. its a rigid self-denying way of looking at things and makes you a prude in my opinion but whatever.
Every time I'd die and reload I'd curse (sometimes loudly, sometimes under my breath) and he would be tapping on my shoulder or tell me I'm being offensive or something.
this pretty much. its this in a higher form.
vell was talking about anti bullying legislation against kids and some kind of law to make transexuals legally respected. I understand the latter for businesses, like an official stance. But on an individual level that does the complete opposite of what you want. It alienates the people you're trying to educate and they are less willing to listen and actually start to hate you because they see you as threatening.
Once you make these laws or these grand gestures, you can't go back. You change society into some kind of verbal no man's land. It doesn't matter what your intent is because then that notion you just pushed forward is up for any and everyone to manipulate. You can't tell a cop to "fuck off" in the states because then they can charge you with assault and thats a hefty sentence to deal with too. You can't even use foul language to express yourself in public without taking the risk of getting charged for that too.
Its just insane, its completely insane. any kind of censorship enables even more. I'd much rather be able to curse someone out for being disrespectful or argue with them and deal with it on a more personal level (if its necessary) than any sort of censorship.
I would vote for any law that enables any white man to go out in the street and say "nigger" all he wants but also protects against the persecution of the physical violence to follow suit. A broken jaw or blackened eye doesn't last nearly as long as a life long criminal record on the system for some arbitrary bullshit which the violater is likely to realize the error or his ways on his own without some kind of legal recourse.
This demand for change of mind is way less efficient than coaxing people to change their minds by leading by example and personal gestures and not some thought police, language police bullshit.
-
yeah it's not censorship to tell someone that they're offending you. nobody is censoring you, Farren; all your posts are untouched by anyone but you. now, you might be thinking that others are encouraging you to censor YOURSELF-- but really, the point of the objections people make towards you is not to make you hold in your opinions, but rather to get you to willfully CHANGE your opinions through empathy and understanding, so that maybe you will stop speaking in such a harmful way out of a personal desire to not come off as a misogynistic jerk. but it's up to you to decide whether or not to adjust your language.
and of course, offensiveness is a subjective thing. for example, i wasn't personally offended by your ironic misogynistic jokes earlier. i even thought they were funny and relevant. however, others (like Vellfire) may have been offended. so if someone points out that something was rude or distasteful, it's completely up to you to decide whether you value that person's feelings or not. you might think they're overreacting (and for you, that might be a reason why you won't acknowledge their opinion), but the proper response isn't to overreact yourself, spewing ad hominem arguments and accusing all others of conformity and conspiracy. it seems like when someone tells you that you said something offensive, your natural reaction is to purposefully become increasingly offensive (and defensive too, actually) in your responses. at that point, someone like me, who had no problem at all with your original posts, starts to become offended and annoyed with you just because of the way you deal with criticism. maybe you should try actually caring about what other people think and learn to tone yourself down rather than allowing yourself to get all worked up and self-righteous.
anyway this topic was sorta destined to get to a discussion about society and women. i say that, and i haven't even been active on these forums in about a year, so i don't know what anyone is talking about relating to inri and to past topics about women's rights. the fact is that you presented things in a very "UGH WOMEN" context (as Vellfire stated), where it really does seem like you're just pretending to care about misogyny when really you just want to voice out your own misogynistic statements about how women are so stupid and they're unknowingly subjecting themselves to this stuff and blahblahblah.
personally i don't really care about the book itself; i mostly just think it's funny that a fanfiction writer called "snowqueens icedragon" somehow hit it big. yes sure it reflects on social attitudes of the times-- this whole incident reminds me a lot of the short story "Rape Fantasies" by Margaret Atwood because of the whole romanticized abuse aspect. however there's nothing wrong with bdsm "kinky fuckery" and if a woman wants to be submissive in bed then it's none of your business. so if middle-aged soccer moms are getting off to that idea then uhh so what? the fact that you say stuff like this:
From what I understand the point here being made is that being submissive is ok and actually hot. That is some real fucked up shit dude.
that honestly kinda devalues the legitimacy of women's sexuality and opinions. if dom/sub fantasies seem hot to the readers, then uhh cool. and maybe it's a misguided attraction based on gender roles and failing marriages but hey maybe that's just what the readers are into! there's been a lot of girls and women and men and boys and non-binary-gender-identifying people reading a lot of nekoboi yaoi mangas and crappy twilight fanfics for a very long time. one of the latter just happened to go mainstream and get published, so now a lot of old married ladies are discovering the internet stuff they hadn't previously been exposed to but would've been into.
but now i'm just kinda rambling. so i'm just going to conclude by reiterating Vellfire's point about transphobia because i think that's something you (Farren) don't regularly consider in your posts and it is something that personally relates to me. not all women have vaginas and not all men have penises. and not everyone is either a woman or a man (or a female or a male). (and yeah you should probably stop believing that them feminazis are hatin on you because of yer penis and skin color, because the people here like Vellfire and dada and me wouldn't even believe something like that)
aand i'm rambling again. soooo let's all just relax and chill and acknowledge how good Ragnar's and J Chastain's posts in this thread are
-
farren i think you're just spewing bullshit so you don't look as bad as you actually do right now. nobody is censoring anyone here, they're just saying you're being a jerk for making sexist jokes
like you know when someone uses the word "nigger," most people tend to regard them as racist assholes. but they're still protected by free speech as long as they aren't killing anyone, afaik. i think most of your claims here are rather overblown and grandiose. you're just mad because a few people didn't like your jokes and now nobody really likes you
maybe if you apologized

I'll throw my two cents into this even though I've been rather emotionally bankrupt of late. I've heard this issue discussed a lot on here lately, and am seeing more and more people kinda get on board with the idea that it's a problem, to some degree, and needs to be addressed in some earnest way. Sexuality exists and we can't do anything about it. I read an op-ed piece in my local newspaper by historian Maurice Thatcher (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_lucas_goiter) that says that we have tried doing something about it but that it doesn't exist and we can't do anything about it. I've spent the last 4 years looking for a way to destroy gender and Burger King Whopper and I've found that I can't do anything about it. I remember reading on the wikipedia page I can't remember what it was, an eyeopening essay (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_popular_ingredients_in_contemporary_cannibalism), but in it they said that several infinity of dollars was spent yearly on trying to send troops into Japan, Michigan, Outer Space, Japan, Michigan, Outerspace(s), Japan, Michigan, Outer space, etc and they can't find any evidence that there is a bomb to speak of that can destroy all latinos but keep whites safe. This was an important step in the right direction for all the people involved, as they wished that they had taken that step earlier but were not capable of verifying which step was the correct one to take. This point I believe was an important step to take, as had it not been this step that was taken, invariably another one would have been interjected in its place, which, in my view, isn't really the correct one we should be taking. I tried to read gender not as a construct of man but as a construct of Ron Paul's Political Platform circa 1982 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ted_Kaczynski_was_probably_right). I'm not exactly a scholar on the subject, but I have the right to conclude that this is probably something resembling a fact, and it's in everyone's best interest to research the matter thoroughly and find their own stance. That's all it's ever really about. You have two things that need to be kept in mind when considering this from a metaphysical point of view: The fact that there is a popular website on the internet called google that lets you search for pictures of people holding banners disparaging the differences between people who eat at McDonalds and people who eat at Burger King. Have you ever talked to any of these three subsects of people? If there's anything you think you can learn from something like this, it's invariably that they don't understand what the hell they're talking about and should be avoided completely.
So where does this leave us? Well, the Wall Street Journal does their part, printing messages like this one here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Cannibalism_and_Public_Transportation_Act_of_2008) which more of less completely invalidates the point. People line up in pretty substantial numbers outside the centers of public housing and make unfounded accusations about the problems inherent in their heating bills. It doesn't take a bright guy to realize that the oxygen we breathe is composed largely of methane gases expeled from the rectum of one very large insurance salesman. A recent study released by a dermatologist at Johns Hopkins (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diaper_Fetishist_International) has determined that roughly 85% of the gasses emitted from said cavities consist of Ron Paul's 2008 Presidential Campaign, so to have the audacity to suggest that this isn't at least partially responsible for the problem is probably something most people are either completely capable of, somewhat capable of, or not capable of at all. That's really the heart of what's wrong: You have gender, first and foremost, and then you have the conniving insurance salesmen, and that's precisely the two most effective ways to break people down. Once you've broken humanity down to such a small level, of course, you get something that doesn't even resemble what they were in the first place. Something of a moot point when it comes right down to it. I don't understand why so many people waste so much conscious energy on it.
I don't know. I really don't. I've tried reading articles like this one (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karl_Marx_was_prolly_gay_IDK) but I feel like it kinda ignores many of the primary issues really at work here, and there isn't any one else really facing the issue with any amount of maturity. It kinda goes in circles. On one hand, people often debate the merits of sticking your entire hand in another person's rectum, not for any medicinal purpose, but because many people regard it as a good a place as any to keep your hand when you aren't using it. I don't really dig this method of looking at gender, race, politics, etc but I understand where they're coming from. I've also heard other people suggest academically that we need to remove all words from the English dictionary and replace the entire notion of an organized system of language with a copy of Twilight, preferably the esperanto language version. Here's a really neat article Zizek wrote on the subject. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_Warfare_Fetishism) You tell me if you think this is where we should expect to see ourselves in the next 90 years, and at worst I'll probably be off the internet somewhere listening to music that was composed in 1994 and wondering aloud when the next time the ice cream truck is going to drive past my house. I don't think many people really are prepared to confront the notion that the ice cream truck has not passed by my house in several years, even fewer with the intellectual capabilities to accept the fact that it's probably not going to pass by again. The other day I stood in a public restroom for several hours trying to figure out what oboma would look like if he was Mexican midget. The results were inconclusive, but I did find this article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_times_the_word_dingleberry_is_used_in_the_bible) that has some pretty interesting conclusions to make. I don't really easy get on board with articles written by hardcore Libertarians, but that's a pretty good read actually. You may want to take a look.
Kinda rambling here, but I think I'm getting my point across. People are in large part kinda shying away from any sort of internal accountability in regards to this issue, and a lot of prominent intellectuals are starting to conclude that this is not exactly some fundamental defect with society and latent psychology in general, but is actually something that goes a little beyond the realm of the social and psychological sciences, typically considered the amount of times people will defecate in public unashamedly before pulling their pants up and going back to their church where they belong. You can't really look at a man defecating in public without being reminded of the time you watched a George Lucas movie with that girl you were trying to hit up, who later turned out to be a fully-sentient 78-gallon drum of guacamole, of course disinterested in you, only trying to use you in order to get closer to your collection of autopsy photographs. I guess Mitt Romney kinda fits this general mold, but I think that's a fairly innocuous way of looking at it. Scholars at Harvard University recently released a study (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_have_fucked_your_grandmother_three_times) that more or less concludes that the problem is a little more abstract in nature, namely that if you attempt to stick your entire face inside a bottle of Jack Daniels Whiskey, you're probably going to have a degree of discomfort, and approximately 18 seconds of pure bliss before the mexican fried rice police come and issue you with a warrant of circumcision and punch you in the butthole with a boxing glove. I'd like to see you try surviving a punch in the butthole with a boxing glove you fucking stupid idiot neanderthal dutchman nigger mexican midget cunt fuckhead faggot cunt midget fuck etc and this is probably something you should react to consciously when you see it. I don't really think that it gets any simpler that this. This is the issue, and people can just find themselves ignoring it. I know I probably do, and can't really think of anybody that's an exception. Until humanity really comes to terms with the fact that it needs to be consciously addressed, you're going to see it continue, possibly expand in ways we aren't even really aware of yet.
Call me crazy, but this is how this issue has always appeared to me. I'd like to see one of you fucking idiots try making a better evaluation of how this works.
-
Yeah, kinda flew off the handle there, but I honestly don't give a fuck anymore. Really fucking tired of this issue. Flame me if you want, this is what I think.

I don't care about the damn joke I wasn't even talking about MY posts in this stupid topic I'm talking about an attitude and a way of discussion
THIS SHIT RIGHT HERE:
Glad that oppression that fucks with my daily life is so much fun for you then! Since it's just some abstract exercise for you and not something you have to live with at all...glad you can just play around with it and poke and prod for reactions with people because you have the privilege to not have to deal with any of this in any real way.
god damn you people are dense. defend myself from what? I don't care what you like or don't....at all. I already said I'll shy away from that kind of humor because of a prudish attitude around here. I'm not apologizing for shit. I didn't do shit. I don't care what you like or don't
-
If you don't care then calm down and move on. Who actually gives a shit anyway.
TBH I think you do care, that's why you threatened to leave rather than just ignore the topic.
-
TBH I think you do care, that's why you threatened to leave rather than just ignore the topic.
GASP surely not

i'm writing my own fanfic fyi entitled "Fifty MORE Shades of Grey!" and i wanted to share an excerpt with everyone:
"You mean... You want to play on your Xbox?"
"No, my sweet, no Xbox tonight. Nor will there be any Playstation. For that matter I may not even get out the Dreamcast, no. I was thinking Sega Genesis but I can't quite figure out all the add-ons. I think I'm actually just going to go down to the park and play on my Nintendo 3DS (suggested retail price now only $169.99)" he bellows.
"Oh."
...
She whimpers.
-
You can't ignore it because it keeps coming back up over and over and over again and you dudes are being apologetic and letting her come in here and act like anyone that disagrees with her is a fucking mysogynist continuing mysogyny. That is a terrible argument. That just empowers her self-rightiousness and its really shit.
I'm pissed because that shows you don't think for yourselves anymore. I wasn't really threatening to leave I am. I just cannot get that point across. No one can get that point across. which is why everyone here thinks generally the same and theres nothing new being introduced to this place.
It doesn't just stretch to this subject its a whole fucking mindset a single niche you people are stuck to and just keep grooming over and over again. Ayn rand for example. Pretty much everyone here has discussed libertarianism or her several times before ron paul several times before. Its just an intellectual regurgitation. We've talked about feminism a hundred times before she suddenly "found the light" and decided to go on some annoying ass rampage to shit she finds offensive. Steel, jamie, and earl all talked about this stuff long before her and dada. Infact I debated with jamie too about it at some point and he also called me a mysogynist but didn't ever dismiss my perception as privlelge. Which is why I give half a fuck now I was much worse then. I also liked what mkk said even though I didn't agree with all of it because she didn't respond through defensive dismissal.
I don't care if I look like an asshole because there is absolutely no other way to get the point accross, you're unwilling to pay attention or to listen because I'm unapologetic and the only one willing to openly say shit about it. fuck.this.place.
-
hey no i'm writing a fanfic called "50 shades of black" it's about rubrt patensen being his own bdsm slave
i lavishly walked into the entrance hall unsrue of what to expect but the only thing at the end waws a mirror. it was a big mirror, as big as the wall! the building is over 20 feet tall too! then the door locked behind me all of a sudden, and then i turned around, and then i realize…
im the one who locked th door
i refuse to accept cirticism/edits because it's better that way..
-
people don't "fall into categories".
I'm not talking about people, but about different types of oppression. We may hate all of them evenly, but they're not the same. When you examine their origins and underlying causes, you'll find that they're different. And that's why there are people who suffer from racism but at the same time participate in misogyny or homophobia (both are major problems in the black community in the US). That's because suffering from one type of oppression doesn't necessarily mean you understand them all.
That was why we had a problem with what you were saying in the other topic. Nobody ever said your opinion "doesn't matter" because you're a straight, white man. What we said is you can't truly expect yourself to be innately familiar with a concept such as misogyny unless you've experienced it firsthand and have the intrinsic realization that it's not something that's ever gonna go away. And that's something that Vellfire and Faust were able to attest to from their own personal experience.
I never claimed to be an authority on shit. I don't care enough. I don't study it but if I don't agree with someone who thinks they are an authority I'm going to say when I think they're full of shit and being oppressive with their sensitivity.
You shouldn't be so dismissive of what other people have to say. That's precisely why we've continuously tried to explain what I just mentioned: you can't consider yourself to be as or more knowledgeable on what it feels like to be oppressed in the way that women or gay people are, just because you've suffered from some other kind of trouble or had a rough childhood or anything like that. Those things are all terrible, but they're also all different.
As for us or me or anyone else being "oppressive", I think you should refer to mkkmypet's post which sums it up very well. Nobody's forcing you to do anything. There's nothing wrong with someone telling you that they don't like what you're saying or what kind of words you use. It doesn't have to be a one-on-one conversation for a black person to tell you he doesn't want you using the word "nigger" in casual conversation or ironically or as a joke. Same for other words. That's not false sensitivity, that's a genuine concern. People aren't going to pick this fight with you out of a false concern.
It's up to you to make the decision whether to act on it. If you don't, you're ignoring people's concerns and risk making those people angry or disappointed. Nobody's censoring you. But if you decide not to put in that minuscule effort that people ask of you, you can't expect them to like you.
-
Okay I didn't see his last post when I was writing that reply.
I don't care if I look like an asshole because there is absolutely no other way to get the point accross, you're unwilling to pay attention or to listen because I'm unapologetic and the only one willing to openly say shit about it. fuck.this.place.
Okay! Just leave already. You're insufferable, and you really just can't stand being disagreed with. This has nothing to do with "boldly telling the truth" or "saying it how it is", you just can't stand it when someone tells you you're wrong and is willing to go through great lengths to tell you why you're wrong. And you can't stand it when someone asks you to please not make crude, misogynistic jokes. That's apparently CENSORSHIP. If you can't muster up a basic level of decency, why are you even on a forum?
ps:
Also yes, I do make black jokes but I only do it to black people and in a way that I am endearing myself to them. I do the same thing with latinos sometimes but in a friendly jousting manner. It removes alot of tension and makes open discussion much more easier and unoffensive.
lmao. No here's what happens: they don't like your racist jokes but they'd rather not speak up about them because white people have been known to call that "oppression".
-
I mean, who the hell even cares that the topic of feminism has been discussed before? That the topics of Ayn Rand and Ron Paul have been discussed before? Is it "intellectual regurgitation" because those topics have come up before with other people? You're just grasping at straws now.
ps: it would be great if you could let me know how many more angry posts ending in "I'm really leaving now" you're planning on making.
-
I'll stop posting about feminism when misogyny is no longer on this forum or in our society.
-
It's ironic that you sound angrier and more oppressive/censoring than anyone you're accusing of doing the same. Everyone else seems pretty calm. Oh and for the record Dada actually claimed I was being misogynist/ignorant a few weeks ago so no one is sharing the same worldview and blindly following each other here.
-

Did I? I honestly don't remember calling you that. I do think I said something to you once at the end of that topic about Inri because you said Vellfire shouldn't have left because of him and should have a thicker skin, but iirc you later changed your mind about that after reading more from the topic.
-
Double post sorry (see below)
-
Yeah something along those lines or siding with a misogynist and being incredibly stupid etc, but honestly, I'm not bothered enough to even check. It's a forum for discussion, someone being shocked by differences of opinion is obscene. Farren's being overly defensive.
-
um I saw some documentary on pbs about like arguing for capitalism and it was a swedish guy and he used Hong Kong as an example of a place with like no regulations pure capitalism and there are probably huge holes in his argument but I was wondering if anyone saw it so they could tear into it
(((late reply))) I have no idea about Hong Kong. You can't really know unless you do a good amount of research into the country's history. I did do some searching and found an article by Chomsky (http://www.chomsky.info/articles/199011--.htm) that states the following:
"Needless to say, these economic successes, like those of Singapore and Hong Kong, are no tribute either to democracy or the wonders of the market; rather, to harsh labor conditions, efficient quasi-fascist political systems, and, much as in Japan, high levels of protectionism and planning by financial-industrial conglomerates in a state-coordinated economy."
This is sort of interesting so maybe I'll check out the books he mentions in the footnotes regarding this point. But in general, rich societies develop because they take to economic protectionism, which causes a country's products to be favored to such a degree that internal development becomes more viable. If you have completely free movement of goods, what you get is investment abroad and the import of cheap foreign goods, which hurts domestic development. One of the most classic books about economy is The Wealth of Nations by Adam Smith, and he outlines the exact same problem and was afraid that a completely unregulated flow of capital would be bad for England. (He ended up concluding that capital should still move freely, and stated that investors would ultimately end up doing the right thing by investing in their native country. That's the so-called "invisible hand of the market".)
-
In general when these people make arguments for unregulated capitalism, they often mean unregulated capitalism in countries that we can exploit. So China, Bangladesh, lots of places in Africa, et cetera. Because "we developed because of unregulated capitalism" (not true in the least), therefore they will start developing too, as long as we're allowed to horribly exploit them.

ps:lmao. No here's what happens: they don't like your racist jokes but they'd rather not speak up about them because white people have been known to call that "oppression".
idk depends on the crowd and the comfort levels between people really.
i've got friends of all shades/hues, all over the sexuality gradient, and a couple trans/genderbender-ppl, and sometimes we pitch shit at each other low-blows and all, what matters is context. I wouldn't really put it like Farren and say "I make black jokes" but sometimes friends and I will say awful shit to each other and laugh about it. Privilege politics and friendships don't really mix well because you can't let your guard down with that shit in my experiences.
generally speaking though, it's bad to say those sorts of things and there's really no justification for it. So if you're OK with being a shithead to someone and they're OK with being one right back then it can be fine; just don't be surprised if you say something fucked up and someone responds with calling you out on saying something fucked up. just own it, apologize, and move on respecting the boundaries that the person has established.

Yeah that's true, when you're with close friends it depends on whether they appreciate it. I don't particularly get doing that to "remove tension" though (to "make open discussion easier and unoffensive"?) That sounds kind of like a hipster who introduces his black friend by way of a racist slur, which is hilarious because he's totally not a racist, right? If you make a joke like that and then laugh about it yourself as a way of asserting that you're not a racist to people who don't know you, that's just wrong.

You also have to consider that the "MY [marginalized ][/marginalized] FRIEND IS FINE WITH IT" argument implies "SO YOU SHOULD BE TOO", which is totally shit because guess what? Your friend's comfort (which in some cases isn't even actual comfort, as I know there are plenty of times I let things that upset me slide to avoid having a fight with a friend, even if I shouldn't) doesn't trump someone else's discomfort. For example, some women want to reclaim the word slut (see: slutwalk), whereas others would rather the word die entirely. The fact that some women are fine with the word (when used in a positive way) does NOT make it okay to just start calling women sluts because "hey, a woman told me it was fine therefore I can say it to whoever I want". That's why ultimately it's best to just avoid it, especially on a goddamn public forum where you have no way of knowing whether everyone is okay with it. The problem is a dude like Farren just decides that everyone should be comfortable with whatever words he wants to say and if they aren't then it's just their fault for being overly sensitive or god forbid "politically correct" (don't even get me started on this bullshit phrase), instead of actually considering what effect his words have on people.
Basically it shows a complete lack of respect for other human beings because his right to "not be censored" (as if this was censorship in any way) is more important than, y'know, actually wanting people to feel comfortable enough to post here.

ya I was going to say the same thing dk, and ya you need to have some tact and not do anything iffy/stupid
Oh and for the record Dada actually claimed I was being misogynist/ignorant a few weeks ago so no one is sharing the same worldview and blindly following each other here.
I didn't read what you're referring to itt or most of this thread but there's definitely a clash here, like western upper crust academic & working class american

depends on who's having it. i've had some decent public nietzche discussions but they were very specific and were with ppl who knew what they were talking about(academic oldppl) and not even that public in that they were at booth tables at a bar talking at a reasonable volume so idk maybe they were kinda private
