I won't lie, I wrote this after having only played it once so far (I've had the game for much longer, just only been able to play it today) but i decided to write a short game review about it.
Rocksmith game review
Introduction
Greetings, I don’t normally do Game reviews, In fact I have only done one other and it was such a long time ago that I can’t even remember what game it was that I had reviewed. The game that this review is about is Rocksmith. In simple terms, Rocksmith is Guitar hero but with a real guitar however, saying it like that really doesn’t do the game justice since you are without the eccentric and colourful displays from Guitar hero or even a character to call your own. Instead you face the 2D animated pictures (high quality pictures) of a crowd of real people and the stages are a much more realistic and the game play is very much different and harder.
The good
The games graphics are pretty decent, with a multitude of high quality textures and realistic equipments and environments and the note high way (where the notes appear for you to play) is very bright, distinct from the back ground and easy to read. The Song selection you get is varied with different genre of rock music filling the song list. You can also unlock amps to modify your sound so you can effectively turn your PS3 into a Synthesizer pedal box (Non-hard wired pedal) however you have to unlock them and even the ability to use them as well and that can take a little while to do.
The games way of handling difficulty is intuitive and makes getting better easy as the game doesn’t penalize you for sucking, in fact the game feels like it was built around that the player is going to suck, at first all you can hope to do is to limit your level of suckage with the goal of being able to play the complete song. However the difficulty system is a double edged sword.
The Bad
If you’re looking to learn to play a song in its actual form you won’t get it to begin with. The way the system works is that it gives you a few notes to play, if you can hit them all then it gives you more but with more notes in the same stretch then before making it harder, if you miss a few it keeps you at the level, if you miss most it drops you down a level. This is good as it allows you to slowly be able to play the full song BUT since you can’t set the level to the max by hand you can’t simply play the full song from the get go so it does takes time to unlock the full song. If you want to play one of those awesome mini- training games, you have to earn it, everything is locked at first and I do mean EVERY thing, save the first songs, and this can be frustrating as the mini-games make for great training and for a bit of silly fun.
The ugly
Due to the fact the sound you hear is coming from your guitar, it can cause lag between you playing and the TV so if you don’t have separate sound system you can hook up to the PS3 you will have a tough time, there is an option to change the timing for lag but I didn’t need to touch it.
Conclusion
If you’re looking to learn some new songs and you can already play the guitar, don’t bother as it would be faster and FAR less frustrating to simply go look at online tablature. If you’re looking for a new game that’s similar to Guitar hero, don’t get it as this is far harder and time consuming then guitar hero. If however you’re looking to learn to play the guitar or your new to it this makes a GREAT way to learn to play, train and have fun at the same time.
Tips for players - · If you find yourself sucking, don’t worry, just keep playing, you WILL get better it just takes time, more than you might expect for a game.
- · If you’re new to guitar playing then don’t be ashamed if you find your plucking hand starting to flag after an hour or two, it takes time to build up plucking stamina, same goes for your fretting hand.
- · The mini-games are a GREAT training tool to learn to play better, use them I can grantee you they will help you improve quickly as they all focus on one aspect of playing and allow you to build up muscle memory without getting boring.
- · There are Technique challenges that teach advanced playing techniques, learn them as they are used in the game but also allow you to play better.
- · Even when you have the highest score or got gold in a technique challenge, don’t stop playing them as you can only get better by playing them.
