Title: this year in music thread 2012
Post by: crone_lover720 on December 21, 2012, 01:07:48 am
welcome to another this year's music thread from your year-end music thread maker Ear Bip. this isn't necessarily a "best of" thread since most of us don't seem to listen to that much new music, but feel free to post best of 2012 lists or just text/youtube dumps of whatever new music you listened to this year. your participation is vital!!/appreciated, I always anticipate the bonzi and kaworu curmudgeonposts, sincerely my friends...

I'm just gonna list some of the albums I remember enjoying, and hopefully yall can add a little to it cuz it's looking kind of grim. I don't know if it was a down year or not, but it didn't really seem like there were any bands that everyone was talking about. the music sites, at least, talked a lot about the two Death Grips albums and all the other crud that band has done this year (I bet pitchfork ends up putting both albums in their top 20 they love doing that stuff)

death grips - The Money Store; No Love Deep Web
(https://legacy.gamingw.net/etc/featuredcontent.utorrent.com/deathgrips/images/sleeve.jpeg)
I've Seen Footage http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DigtCrO77L8
Get Got http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HIrKSqb4H4A
No Love http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uY_S-CLd3n0

neat ultra aggression music. my favorite tracks are the ones that sound the most like guys yelling stuff on the street. I don't really understand anything other people have been saying about em, but I guess there's been a lot of controversy with them and their label. I know their second album cover is a picture of the one guy's boner with the album title written on it with magic marker, but unfortunately the background looks pretty clean and isn't a subway bathroom. I think that says all you need to know

there have also been some solid new releases from pretty well-established SW bands:

swans - the seer

The amount of music released that left an impression this year is very low for me.

I guess Mac DeMarco's album was ok. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I2_r94MwW18 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I2_r94MwW18)

I might think of more later.

The Money Store was definitely album of the year for me, followed by Mature Themes (although honestly, I think it was much more accessible than Before Today).

Also loved AM & Shawn Lee's Celestial (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OB-CnDb0Gfw) Electric (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rN8Lh6GIdpQ) (I was lucky enough to see them play at a record store in East London and they were fantastic). Flying Lotus' Until The Quiet Comes (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TRNGpATRCrI) (hey look Elijah Wood!), while not as strong as his earlier work, was great too, and Tindersticks' The Something Rain (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o8dgj8UJMs4) was decent.

Apart from those I'd have to agree that 2012 was a pretty mediocre year for music.

(I don't even know what I'm doing here)

Twin Shadow - Confess

Golden Light - http://youtu.be/ZH5XjFJtXUw (http://youtu.be/ZH5XjFJtXUw)

Run My Heart - http://youtu.be/5zwZDvj565g (http://youtu.be/5zwZDvj565g)

Patient - http://youtu.be/wlknpVspI-A (http://youtu.be/wlknpVspI-A)     (the album version is better but I can't find it on youtube)

I like him. If you pay attention to his lyrics, on this album especially, he's a bit of a motherfucker but he makes really good pop songs and I think I like his mean edge on this, too. There is a lot of music with the kind of influences he obviously draws from around right now, but I've always liked people who have really defined personalities beyond you know, just good songs or fitting certain styles that I like, and this guy is like that for me. I will post another pick later.

Pitchfork DID name Ariel Pink's "Round and Round" #1 single of 2010 IIRC. I haven't been able to hate them much since

Twin Shadow's great but I couldn't really get into Confess. Felt like it was trying too hard to be 80's.

EDIT: Grimes' Oblivion at #1 hahaha well done Pitchfork

I also really like the Screaming Females album that came out. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ism4J7QvsZQ (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ism4J7QvsZQ)
I saw this band on a whim this year after they played a club not too far from my apartment. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HtkePLlTUcY (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HtkePLlTUcY)
I still haven't heard too much of the new Dinosaur Jr. album, but I saw them on the tour for it.

It's not that I'm afraid you'll laugh at my music choices or something, I'm really drawing a blank. Most of the stuff I listened to this year was older or local stuff.

EDIT: I am checking out the songs everyone puts up, though. I have some good music to catch up on it seems.

I'm being as earnest and non-smug as possible when I say it's not for everyone. it just deals with a lot of stuff that not everyone would find value in for better or for worse. and of course people can have totally valid criticisms of it too

Also I also kind of hear what you are saying I've kind of grown out of popular music and I'm totally okay with that.  I go over music zines and what not and find that I haven't heard most of the artsits listed and thats not totally a bad thing, because I still occasionally stumble across music that I like on my own, and can find the things I'm interested in, not whatever pitchsuck or NME thinks that I should enjoy listening to.  It's one thing to take suggestions, but another thing to let a third party dictate what you like.   If you find yourself falling outside of what is popular and most people on the dancefloor are familiar with, there is nothing wrong with that as long as you are finding things that are pushing the envelope and are musically interesting and challenging beyond the basic pop-structure.

ya, I don't think pitchfork really even represents what's popular but I like looking at it since they're a big music site and sometimes something stands out to me. i don't really follow popmusic but I like to check out the new stuff & be able to talk about it with the young folk

To be honest, I haven't gotten much new music this year, been mostly getting a load of old albums(the big story of the year being the Zappa reissue series, meaning that many of his albums have now become affordable again...), though I did get a few:

Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paradiso UFO - Son Of A Bitches Brew
combining their usual sonic spacerock freakouts with free jazz stylings, AMT have come up with an exciting album creating vast audio worlds of sheer madness. It's really fun to listen to and totally out there. Their best album in quite some time!

Hawkwind - Onward
This year has been marked by the tragic death of Huw Loyd Langton earlier this month, but man, Hawkwind managed to get a good album out around spring time. It's taking their more typical sound but using a lot more modern production and stylings, so took a while to get into. It's just great that a band consisting of guys in their 50's-70's is making music more modern, fresh and exciting than the newer psychedelic bands who mostly just copy what Hawkwind did 40 years ago. It's good music, though hit and miss in parts, and lacks the continous trip feeling of earlier Hawkwind, but when it gets into the Blanga zone, it's great.

Madness - Oui Oui Si Si Ja Ja Da Da
let's face it, it would be impossible to surpass 2010's The Liberty Of Norton Folgate, so what Madness have instead done is focused on what got them respected back in the eighties, a series of superbly written short length tracks about life. Now sounding closer to The Small Faces than ever, but still definative Madness, great album. Get it.

Like I said though, this year I've mainly been focusing on getting old stuff, records, tapes and whatever, and it felt like another year where most've the new bands around didn't really do anything new or interesting. Lawrence Arabia is carrying the 60's style singersongwriter mantle pretty well, and is pleasent to listen to, though top new band of the year?

perhaps Syd Arthur (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BsuB4IXEJz8)? They've taken the modern indie rock and just rewrote the rule book by adding heavy elements of the canterbury scene into it, just putting those soft folk/jazz dynamics into the music and breaking up the monotomy adding a laid back sophistication. It's 'prog lite', and just glides over the ears.

EDIT: Actually the biggest music story of the year was the official release of Captain Beefheart's Bat Chain Puller, after like 35 years in development hell, the Zappa family trust were finally able to release it since he died in 2010. Unfortunately, I haven't got a copy yet, which sucks.

yeah i know i know pal. i just liked the way you put it and just put up my berserk bonzi role. i truly am a curmudgeon, one cannot help it/pr much absorbed into my own research or ideas in music.

also idk about you but isn't the big problem with you/us guys is that there is no right narrative on modern music/music that is going on? you mostly react to the social debris that surround modern music VS blissfully avoiding it when getting into older music (people were just "as awful" when everybody jumped on the Television - bandwagon way back in 80's).

the only thing i think that could be a problem is that most of the music now has a pretty cohesive musical narrative/ideas on what is considered a. cool (most current indie music) b. esthetic music (bon iver) c. good musical ideas or tricks to use (ergo hipster pop jams with percussions, moaning/wailing vocals etc). but even then you could just look into the mirror and think why you think the musical ideas of eg post-punk/death disco or pavement/90's altindie rock sounds and ideas are more profound that eg some british club alternate dubstep ideas. thinking vs labeling.

Blondie released a couple cool singles this year:

I think the only other new music I listened to this year was the new No Doubt album, and it was Alright.  Really liked a couple songs but otherwise it was kinda forgettable.

Coheed's The Afterman (part 1 of 2, second one comes out in early 2013 I believe).

That's it. That's the only new music I've listened to all year that didn't come out of a radio.

I guess that's right re: no cohesive narrative, maybe that's why I make these threads. what you're talking about in the last part is pretty visible in places like pitchfork, where the critics will reject something if it fits a narrative TOO closely, but otherwise use them to determine what is good in their weird pseudo-academic rating system

Just heard this Charles Bradley on the radio and seeing him perform is pretty awesome. He's always making this intense painful-looking face, dancing, and then doing The Flinstone up to the mic (followed by weird camera zoom) amongst these bored looking white dudes. His biography according to Wikipedia is tragic. I don't know much about soul or funk, so I'd assumed he'd been jamming since the 70s, but there's this 30 year silence after which he got an upstart with a band. Very inspiring. It's like a fresh take on the genre from someone who has lived "the normal life" with no pretense or drama.
