The idea is to do a podcast. I like podcasts, and they are easy to make. I'll be the 'host' guy, and there will be contributions from anyone who wants to contribute and has the slightest, even the slightest, amount of communicative ability. Flap those jaws. Go ahead. Sound coming out? You might be qualified.
It'll be a variety kind of thing with a few different segments. Right now I am not putting too many restrictions on it, I'll make a first episode, decide what worked and what didn't, and consider any response it gets.
So this topic is to see who will contribute and what you can contribute. If you have a specific idea for an audio segments - comedy, or something - then go ahead and submit that to me and it might go in if it isn't boring or terrible sound quality. There's no point in just putting everything in if some of the submissions aren't any fun or interesting to listen to, so if you do want to do something like that then it'll probably need at least a little effort put into it i.e. write down what you're gonna say roughly beforehand, or do some editing work before you send it over.
Otherwise, if you are comfortable with the idea of a live skype call which I'll be a part of and help direct the conversation a bit, then we can do that. You can also do this with different participants and send it to me and it might go in. I think a good proportion of live back and forth is important in terms of making this feel alive - not just a series of monologues, although like I said with the requisite amount of effort and creativity put into it they can be great.
This is a preliminary topic. I'm going to make this, and how fast it gets done depends on the amount of submissions. If I have to end up doing 90% of the first episode, so be it. If it is good and people see a result I'm sure submissions would become more plentiful. I'm doing this for fun right now, just because I like to make things. This is also a very good idea for core community content if this place was ever to start growing again.
So say whatever you want about the idea or ask questions. Also if you can help out, post here or pm me if you'd rather. I'll update when I'm actively working on the first episode.

I'm not familiar with podcasts but i like this idea if you are willin to front run it. Are you looking for talking about things etc? or like music creations from members, comedy bits? or both/more? Either way I'm interested, and I'm sure others would be, especially if this is a regular thing
-
Variety show. The weight of what kind of content will be figured out as a few episodes get made. In the first episode i'm imagining like 25% comedy skits by me, 50% discussion with 2 or more participants about a chosen topic which can be as funny or as serious as it needs to be, 15% music of some kind, yes possibly from members, and 10% ??chaos??
Most podcasts I listen to just go for a straight conversation between people about a chosen topic. I think there is potential to do a bit more with the format than that, but if that turns out to not be the case then I'll be fine with transitioning into just conversations. The first few episodes will be experimental and primarily about having fun, getting some attention and figuring out what this is exactly. I think I'll be able to do a good job taking the head of it.

I can flap my jaw and have home studio set up if that helps.
-
This sounds like a great idea, I sometimes much prefer to listen to a podcast than actual music. If this takes off, it just might become my walking to work entertainment.
What sort of topics are you thinking about incorporating?
Most podcasts last about an hour each, are you going to follow this trend?
Simple things like sound effects can help make a podcast a lot more fun to listen too, maybe you can grab a few from some of our own members.
-
if you are interested in this, even if you don't intend to contribute, just post to say so. the more interest it appears to get the more likely it will happen. if this ends up with like 4 replies and falls off the top of the forum...i just feel like this needs some minimal boost of enthusiasm to get started.
-
This is a great idea. I'm a big fan of audio broadcasts, particularly random amateur college stations I come across. I know much of this community is outspoken on certain topics, and would be very interested in hearing anyone willing to speak on air. I really enjoy your youtube bits as well, and think it would be no great leap to take your skits to this medium. Do make this happen!
-
I would definitely be interested in this, I would totally listen to it.
-
I have a headset with which to communicate with far-away people, but I don't know about anything else
generally thumbs up on podcasts & podcasting
I'd listen to people talk about one or two weird game worlds in pretty fine detail for like.. 40 minutes. this is presently a goofcast? for goofing and talking and thinking other people wanna listen to my ramblings about nothing? (goofing is different, everyone loves a good goof.) if so, I may be in that state of mind sometime, but it's really hard to foresee
-
I want to start doing things like this. It sounds fun.
-
Would love to be part of this.
-
I'd love to listen and help. I have some omnidirectional mics left from film school and a USB interface for them, so all I'd need is a stand.
-
i like goofcasts!! *everybody looks hella excit-* i hate my voice!! it'd destroy the bonzi ape!! *GROAANN everybody looks hella angry!!* i wonder if you can connect zoom h4v into comp & use it as a microphone? i doubt it, spit, shit...
-
yeah i'm totally interested in this and would love to get my foot into some discussions or conversations or whatever!
-
a whole rack of thumbs-up from over here
i am an idea vacuum & don't like my own voice much so i am unlikely to be in on this straight away but...
-
take names boss lots apeople want in
-
I like podcasts
-
bonzi, we all love you no matter what your voice sounds like
(denzquix too)
hearing folks talk is like my favorite thing, it really solidifies my image of the person (giving voice to posts) and helps me understand their syntax/tones a lot better
However. In Ventrilo, there's a text-to-speech translator that's really, really slow & would be sort of a pain. There are other free TTS programs you could use, and there's also this (http://www.screamingbee.com/product/MorphVOXJunior.aspx), which boasts a built-in regular person-to-little folk setting. As far as I can tell it just adjusts the pitch, and may only do that within the presets (lady->guy, guy->lady, miggit). (Upgrade to the full version for timbre!)
-
bonzi is exactly the same as his posts irl by the way

I think these should stay under an hour, btw, ideally around 30-40 minutes. Or at least release them in standalone parts that length. Not as a rule, necessarily, but if we're just goofing based on one prompt, make sure those segments don't go too long without a laff. We'll settle on the minimum laffs/min at a later date.. its probably like... two.. and after two minutes pass without meeting that quota, chat participants will be jettisoned one by one until someone comes up with something solid, at which point the remainder can continue with their free-form riffs, taking care to maintain that all-important, natural, casual atmosphere
-
i will help out in whatever form i can!!
i think the last attempt had a really good sense of direction, so am looking forward to the revamp
-
i would definitely listen to a SW podcast and i'd love to participate as well~ :3 i like talking about things!! sign me up yo. we can talk about art and games and social issues and whatever weird junk you think would be interesting to have my input on! and of course i'd be very excited to hear stuff from other community members, because i think everyone 'round these parts has interesting ideas and unique experiences and whatnot. cool stuff
-
Cool Idea man. I'd listen as long as its not just about video games, but it sounds like that wont happen and you've got a pretty good idea of what you're doing. Interview me about travel, music and Space Jam btw.
-
I'll be the audience then
-
yeah mix it up with musics video film television and stuff with the v. games + community stuff would be super im up for talkin about any of that
-
put me on tinychat and record it or somethin
i don't think i could really record myself just talkin about somethin but i could prolly chat WITH someone about somethin
or i could record myself reading 90s girl books and just have a girl talk corner
-
wow yes Vellfire let's record a ~*Girl Chat*~ section together and talk about 90s teen girl books, games, and sitcoms
edit: gotta finally cash in on that sweet internet female novelty knowwhatimsayin
-
yeah. probably skype rather than tinychat, but that'd be the idea. also i'm not sure if we'd all have videos on or just keep it to audio for the connection speed - it'll just be audio in the end product, but then again it might feel a bit alienating. we could try it with the videos on and see how that goes.

you should go to goodwill and see if you can find any girl talk books and we can book club them and discuss our favorite outfits
-
yeah i think its important to do convos, listening to one person could get kinda tiring, and you lose the dynamics of interacting with somebody else.
-
I want to host a comedy sketch called "jovial amish future"
but only if I can do my own modeling
-
As I said I'm willing to be in this
-
We need a soundboard imo
-
We need a soundboard imo
is that some kind of scheduling thing? cos i was thinking of making a doodle for it

No it's like sound effects like if your talking and sometimes a guy working the soundboard hits a key to make a fart sounds to add some funny bits too it or if your talking about turtles and all sudden I like turtles sound plays. a soundboard can be hardware or software based.
-
oh, that. well i know what that is, i just thought it was some internet reappropriation of the word. why would we need a soundboard? unless it was ajoke. i mean i'm intending to do a bunch of editing afterwards - i'm going to have sound effects to indicate segment transitions, but nothing too fancy.
-
i want some fart sfx
-
also i may be able to contribute a bit to this if you want. like if you need someone to record a few lines idk. maybe.
-
This sounds awesome, I wouild love to contribute, Not sure what, even just some one to add to the conversation.

Isn't the point of doing podcast is to replicate radio production and not to edit in sound effect but have them occur live.
-
It's more like a pretaped radio segment (which has musical transitions, intros, outros, etc. edited in, plus content edited to get rid of dead time & generally tighten it up) than a live radio show (which has goofy sound effects and either a lot of bullshitting or a script, + music/interviews/news/quizzes/callers). Both varieties generally have pre-taped or scripted intros and outros, which can be done live or not. There are podcasts of both types, but the ones that follow the live radio format & edit minimally tend to be by more skilled/professional talkers. Even those usually have a monologue followed by the stock intro (followed by a fade-in of some excerpts) followed by the main part. And when you're recording one with a bunch of people with different microphones over the Internet, sometimes you have to edit the individual inputs, or splice together multiple recordings if the sound gets garbled for some people.
The only podcast I can think of that always does live sound effects is the one with DJ Douggpound, but I have been on a long hiatus & stuck to content-heavy ones back when I was gorging on 'em.
Anyhow, it shouldn't be a ton of work as long as we suss out any issues before recording, and otherwise it's good editing practice, which I think is one of Jamie's motivations.

It was just a thought. I've listened to some podcasts that did pretty good things with soundboards. But I don't actually have any idea what sort of sounds that would have for us.

salt sounds
someone saying "salty!"
-
i'm working up the audacity to spend a lot of cash on this microphone i want. might get it tomorrow. when i do, i'm starting to make this. so, when i do, i'll start getting an idea of who is going to contribute to the first one.
conversation topics at this point would be a good idea. i have some in mind but please chip in with whatever.
-
what mi crophone are you getting?
-
We sort of know where we wanna go with the main site and forum and how we want to develop things, but maybe it'd be fun to have a discussion on that, like on what salt world is and what we can do with the site/forum to support the creative stuff going on there right now.
-
i went ahead and spent so much bucks on a decent sounding mic so i think i am ready technically to do this. i'm going to spend the new couple of hours amassing some ideas and see who will get in on it. i'll pm some of you shortly i think.
