Title: iconic game archaeology: miscellaneous artifact pile [image heavy!!]
Post by: denzquix on June 21, 2013, 01:18:47 am
so, this thread is about lookin back at the history of relatively well-known game franchises then digging up weird & wonderful peripheral stuff that even an enthusiastic fan of the game(s) might never've seen/heard about....

it is kinda generalized extension of my Amiga Worms Level tumblr (http://twcustom.tumblr.com/) & Bubble Bobble: The Adventure thread (http://saltworld.net/forums/topic/12664-anton-belenkis-bubble-bobble-the-adventure-zx-spectrum-basic-1993/)

after the game came out, fans started creating their own lemming anim loops

"Putty In The Style Of Sam Peckinpah"

Putty's "Too bad, juuust missed it!" was a sound sample from 1944 Tex Avery cartoon, Screwball Squirrel:

for the SNES edition, it seems the residents of dazzledaze villas were forced to clean up their act & ditch some dirty habits before putty could get that coveted nintendo seal of approval...

All Night Nippon Super Mario Bros. (1986) was an officially-sanctioned ROM Hack of the original Super Mario Bros. for the Famicom Disk System

it was created as a contest prize for the listeners of a late-night radio show in Japan

cover art for ANNSMB

Super Mario Bros. Special (1986) was a officially-licensed sequel to Super Mario Bros. created by "HudsonSoft" & exclusive to the NEC-PC8801/Sharp X1 series of Japanese home computers

it was 1-player only (no Luigi!!) and borrowed elements from the original Donkey Kong & (non-Super) Mario Bros. arcade games, and had a power-up very much like the P-Wing that turned up later in SMB3

but enough about officially-licensed stuff... let's see some various bootleg marios created for long-defunct home computers...

in monkey island 2, Stan's Previously-Owned Coffins was completely redone from the version used in the demo (final version has blue walls)

in the demo for the original monkey island, the prison was moved around to where the archway should be (i guess this was done for the demo rather than an early version of how it was intended to be)

in indiana jones & the fate of atlantis, the data files show a little room over to the right here next to sophia's trashed office that is never shown in the game:

I have to say Doom RPG is an actual fantastic game. Got me through a lot of horribly boring physics lessons at college.

My brother has an mp3 player with custom firmware that someone has ported doom to, its just a monocrome led screen but god damn it's an incredible thing. I'll see if I can dig up the deets

ohh well to be fair I think the RPG is the only "officially-sanctioned" thing... I can't speak to whether any of these fan adaptations are likely to please the discerning doom-lover...

I tried playing the RPG on my computer with an emulator but it didn't work, otherwise I would've tried to do some animated screens

Yeah while it's aesthetically great it looks like it'd be really terrible as a controller (coincidentally me and my friends were discussing how the gamecube controller is one of the best controllers last night). I assume that's why they dropped the idea. the book for the box is crazy great though! i wonder what the final insides were going to look like.

Hahaha, that is utterly genius. I didn't realise you/I/we/zorkplayer was such a paragon of machismo. Look at how terrified that goblin is, and how completely unnecessary it is to slay it. Now contrast it with the furious bloodlust on ZORKDUDE's face.

I don't remember the game being so passionately murderous :(.

game cover art was notoriously unrelated to the actual games in those days, though. look at megaman box art for example (apart from being terrible:

sure. but it does at least have some specific details in there, the white house and the sword glowing blue

story behind it is that Zork's original publisher ("Personal Software" as mentioned on the box) didn't really give a shit about it 'cause they were gearing up to drop all games and focus on serious application software exclusively... which they did, they dropped the hammer in 1981 just before Zork II was ready to be published, forcing Infocom to scramble and start self-publishing their games... with full control of their own brand, they then came up with the "chunky white brick words (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/5/56/Zork_II_box_art.jpg/256px-Zork_II_box_art.jpg)" motif for future zorks

there's a good blog about this bit of Infocom's history here: http://www.filfre.net/2012/05/infocom-going-it-alone/ (http://www.filfre.net/2012/05/infocom-going-it-alone/)

game cover art was notoriously unrelated to the actual games in those days, though. look at megaman box art for example (apart from being terrible:
Zork does feel like a particularly interesting one to me though... with Megaman even if you haven't played it you can tell immediately from a few reference screenshots just how unrepresentative it is...

....but Zork is a text adventure that goes out of its way to not describe the protagonist, leaving appearance and motivations and history and so on up to the player's imagination/projection. so i don't think there's any paragraph of Zork's gametext that actually contradicts the idea that you're this mustachioed beefcake roughing up the locals.... i mean the whole objective of the thing is to ruthlessly strip-mine the area of gaudy valuables, scoring armfuls of loot and dealing with obstacles & rivals by whatever means necessary (e.g. you do need to use a blue-glowing sword to kill a fantasy-creature to progress, pretty early on) and yet it's still such a jarring depiction

anyway here's another good bit of early box art, for the first King's Quest:

Wow it's amazing how much we take for granted the ability to digitally animate artwork. The concept that you'd have to storyboard an in-game animation on paper to give it to an artist or even a programmer to just enter the frames into lines of cartridge ROM seems like a crazy effort compared to what we get away with. Just imagine showing Unity to someone in 1990.

I really love how they drew out tiles as they'd appear in the ROM. reminds me of when, in the atari 2600 days, developers had grids for individual pixels, where maybe an 8x8 grid would be programmed in by hand. there's a magazine in the UK called retro gamer which has a lot of interesting game archaeology contained within. I will get round to scanning some stuff soon.

I remember seeing the Pocket Sonar in a magazine and I have wanted it ever since.  One day I hope to come across a Pocket Sonar.

I've always been sort of obsessed with weird Gameboy peripherals in general.  Like even though the service is gone and it's not useable anymore I still really want that GB cart that is basically just email.  Like you just hook the GB cart into your dialup and check your email through their proprietary system.  I also really like the bizarre interfaces of GB memory cards/gamesharks and desperately want to buy a new BrainBoy since I had one as a kid.  The BrainBoy was great because it had a lot of Pokemon-specific stuff programmed in, so you could alter all your Pokemon's stats individually.  Like, you could use it to backup (and maybe edit?? I forget) any gameboy game but it had a lot of extra stuff added in just for Pokemon.  Something about the aesthetics of the menu though really struck a chord with me, but now as an adult I can't remember what they looked like.  I also can't seem to find a video of it.  I guess I have to just give in and spend $15 to get one off ebay and find out for myself.  It'd be nice to have a second backup for my Pokemon saves anyway.

While I pretty much think the 360 controller (ignoring the d-pad) is the best controller in existence, I actually really liked the giant original xbox controller. I have big hands and long fingers though. But yeah, using it is nostalgic for me, and I actually think the design of it isn't necessarily bad (ignoring the size since most people don't have big hands).

also, bonzi I've seen that image before and its funny even before I saw it I already noticed as a kid and since back then I did not know the in and outs of resource management for games I was weirded out by it.

I might as well chip in with some unused graphics I found in Ultima VII and Serpent Isle while going through the game resources via Exult (http://exult.sourceforge.net/).

There are frames for a flying gargoyle which is not used anywhere in the game.

Several of these business signs are not used in the game. Some, like the key for guild shop and ankh for healer stem from earlier games in the series. The three red globes was possibly meant for pawn shops, as in the released game you can sell only a couple of very specific items. The red bull sign is from Serpent Isle, and used in place of the horse sign.

Some of the characters have frames for special actions which are not used in the game. On magic-able characters these frames are used for spellcasting gestures.

Then there's this thing. It's labeled as "prism" in the game files. I have no idea what it might have been intended for. The colors are actually transparencies which make whatever is behind it lighter. This is how it looks on a black background.

This is a bunch of important quest item graphics that are grouped together in the Serpent Isle files. The third one is labeled "the cat's eye", and is not used in the game. This is probably related to a cut section of the game called Cat Isle. The one in the middle is a small gong, which I do not remember being used anywhere in the game either.

Finally, here are paperdoll graphics for a cloak which is not in the game. The glowing edges would animate in the game, streaking around the cloak.

edit: Sorry I wasn't able to figure out how to display the images in full size in the post itself.

I always wondered why they called that console a playstation when it ended up looking like anything but a console you'd call a "playstation".

This... explains... EVERYTHING!

The original Sonic the Hedgehog had some of the most bizarre pre-production stuff I've seen in a while. The makers of the game were bouncing around a lot of ideas about the game in the early days of it's development and it shows with a lot of artwork such as Sonic the Hedgehog as a rabbit, and Sonic apparently fighting demons with Robotnik dressed as a bumblebee.

Also, there's a lot of graphics that were apparently deleted from the final version of the game, these cannot be found on any ROMs but could be seen in magazines and really old game commercials. A good example is this french Sonic 1 commercial which shows Robotnik's chainball rotating and also the spring "stetch" when Sonic runs into them.

And this advertisement which shows some of the unused Sonic the Hedgehog zones like Sparkling Zone and Clock Work Zone. Sparkling Zone also had different graphics than those used in the final game as well and there were UFOs in the background of Marble Zone, I'm not making this up, search and see for yourself. Sorry if I took up a lot of space, this pre-production stuff is interesting I think, the best place to look for it is old vintage gaming magazines prior to the game's release.

Very glad there are still new additions to the Shadow NES ROM-canon. DIZZY AND DAISY GAZED DOWN INTO THE DARKNESS BELOW.

edit: It's very cool that when you pet the Witch's cat you two go off and exist in some smb3 staged space for the duration.

edit: Man the queen is a dick.

edit: Chip's Challenge fucking rocks. "TELEPORTS CAN BE DIRECTIONAL. THE THIEF TAKES YOUR TOOLS. NEW WALLS CAN APPEAR UNDER YOU." I really wanna make a puzzley tile game like Chip's but with nonsensical rube goldberg levels with a choice of multiple stupid win conditions so you can only make progress by floundering around and accidentally activating game systems you don't understand.

I found this story incredible. A demo disc included with a magazine had reused a disc that had been used to transfer beta files for Commander Keen. Since they copied the whole disc as an image, using undelete programs on the image years later found intact beta files.

Just posted by John Romero - footage from the 1990 DOS Super Mario 3 demo that IFD (precursor to id software) made for Nintendo, who weren't interested in fleshing it out to a full title:

Not entirely sure this counts since it's a fangame, but the DOS version of Sonic Epoch is pretty noteworthy simply for how elaborate it was for the time it was made (most Sonic fangames back then were made in Kilk & Play).

I did a playthrough of the whole thing here:

Thanks! Yeah, fan games are fine, it's just one of those things where there's so many of them out there, it could be a thread in itself.... but ones that are exceptional/noteworthy in any way are definitely welcome
