Title: Love and War: Act I (New Revamp Released!)

Wow, it's been a while and a half!

Figured I'd go ahead and post up the revamped version of Act I here, at the place where it all started...  :) (Well, sort of. I guess Salt World isn't exactly Gaming World?). The revamped version of Act I was released a little while ago - Here are some screenshots:

(https://legacy.gamingw.net/etc/antioch.snow-fall.com/law/misc/screen01.jpeg) (https://legacy.gamingw.net/etc/antioch.snow-fall.com/law/misc/screen02.jpeg)

(https://legacy.gamingw.net/etc/antioch.snow-fall.com/law/misc/screen05.jpeg) (https://legacy.gamingw.net/etc/antioch.snow-fall.com/law/misc/screen06.jpeg)

What's new? For starters, it now features a lot of voice acting! The script weighed in at 117 pages and over 1,600 lines. The new version also contains new artwork, redone mapwork, and new sidequests. I think it's a better and stronger project because of it, and for those who have downloaded past versions, I hope you'll agree!

Anyhoo, you can find our Facebook page here: http://www.facebook.com/loveandwartherpg

The LAW webpage here: http://antioch.snow-fall.com/law/

And here's a direct link to the download: http://antioch.snow-fall.com/law/downloads/Law1.exe

To any that check it out, I hope you enjoy, and I look forward to any feedback you might have!

Act I: The Ties That Bind
(OLD POST)

STORY:

Love and War is a tale taking place on the world of Terra. Ever since the birth of the first nation-state on this world, Terra has been wracked by the scourge of war. Five nations managed to survive throughout the ages, yet it seemed as though with each passing day, humanity slipped closer and closer to self-annihilation.

One man made a difference, however. The youthful Emperor of the Zion Empire, Geraud Valtemond, was this man. A brilliant, honorable, and benevolent monarch, he managed to open the eyes of the leaders of the other nations, showing them what lay ahead if Terra persisted down this road. Through diplomacy and sheer force of will, Lord Geraud created the Commonwealth; an international governing body, comprised of democratically elected representatives and Peacekeeping Forces, which would forever make war a thing of the past.

Three centuries have elapsed, and people have forgotten the lessons of the past. Tensions are rising between nations once again, and it seems as if the Commonwealth is powerless to do anything but watch as its order crumbles. Can one man make a difference, once again?

Welcome to Love and War.

EDIT:

Miniproject: C'est Lavie!

http://antioch.snow-fall.com/law/downloads/CestLavie.rar (http://antioch.snow-fall.com/law/downloads/CestLavie.rar)

C'est Lavie is a fifteen minute, 19MB RM2K cutscene starring Lavie and Ryan, two of the main characters from Love and War, my flagship RPG series. Apparently, Lavie has decided to try and change the nature of her relationship with Ryan. Little does she know her imagination may be her own worst enemy...

The reason for the rather large file size is because of my experiment with... voice acting! Please tell me what you think, should you feel so inclined; feedback will help me decide whether I should implement limited voice acting in LAW itself, or continue making the occasional side project, and so on.

This game might not the prettiest game in existence, but it has more than enough substance to back it up.

Very good game; I've spent more time with this game then with any other game... but then again that's not saying much.

Very much worth a download and a play.

Downloading now.  It seems you've gotten a bit of praise for the game, even despite the rtpish graphics.  In that case, that means the actual story material must be good.  I look forward to playing.

I have now finished this game and to sum it up:
I have rarely been so fond of an indie game. I am usually very hard on rating games because I find pretty many flaws in most games that really made me loose interest or fun. Well - not in Love and War: Act 1. Although I am not a fan of the animeish drawing of Lavie I am glad it was restricted to only a slight influence and she still looked non-cliched enough for me not to be annoyed in any way. This is the only thing I could write negative about this game (and this even is a very weak point and you shoulddn't be concerned about it) - and that's it.

I am kind of thankful for the thought you have obviously put into this game, its world and its characters - because those characters really felt alive and vivid. They never behave illogical (although I would surely not react in such a blunt way as the main character does but that's not something to rate, it's simply different)

There is only one question i didn't find a logical answer to
Since this contains a spoiler I'll hide it.

So - I really want to say "Thank you" because this is really one of the very few games that have vivid characters, a believable and vivid world - and it feels alive because people actually change. The characters develop / advance, not just in terms of strength. Plus - the way Levie was "included" later on was just sheer funny and I often really laughed out while playing this game because of some referances and such. If you keep this up and do another 400 chapters.. *grins*.

For those still undecided - don't be hesitating because of the story intro given here or the "Commonwealth" - it really blends into a fine setting (reminded me of "Aranum", the game) - but the really big "plus" points of this game are the storytelling and the excellent characters.

I really don't want to sound like a fanboy you know.. but this game really got me hooked and now I am damn curious about how this will continue. You got a great cliffhanger there... *grumbles*. :) Astonishing how long this game was for being "Act 1" - this makes me look forward towards future releases even more.

So marvellous that I had to write it down :)

PS: I loved the sublte, never annoying, parodies on real-life countries / state systems.

Edit:
Now I've also downloaded and "played" C'est Lavie and in fact this voice acting is much better than that of most commercial games because the persons doing the voice acting obviously didn't just "read it out" but really said it the same way one would say it in a real-life situation.

I say - do include this in future releases, seriously - the voices also fit the characters pretty well.
If you should need any kind of help with Love and War Chapter 2 in terms of creating lore for it or are in need of any creative input like for a scene, for a character or whatever I'd be up for that. Oh and if I ever manage to get my Shure SM58 micro back to woring order I'd also be offering voice acting for sure or would at least offer a "demo" of voice acting :).

This is really becoming great.

Well shucks, thanks muchly for your kind words, they're much appreciated. :) I'm just glad people are finding and playing it even today, I often marvel at that. It sounds rather silly to say, but I figure if even one person downloaded it, played it, and finished it with a smile on their face, it was worth all the work. Glad the cutscenes did not bug you too much, different things will not appeal to everybody the same way, of course. Ryan, blunt? That's an interesting way to look at it. :)

To answer your question:

Thanks for the offer of help, I'll keep it in mind, and receiving a voice demo from you would be fun. Hope to hear from you again, whenever Act II comes out. :)

Oh, and nice tunes from Chrono Trigger ^_^. And the town.... so many houses, it actually feels like a town! I'm going to continue playing and seeing if this is as good as I think it is!

Check your volume controls. Your SW Synth would be either muted or at 0 volume.

Sorry for that double post ><. I didn't do it, the network did.

I thought you had "quoted for truth", Strafe...

Imadjinn: I thought the same thing as Strafe did, so hopefully that's the answer. If not, hmm... I guess it could mean that something's up with your sound card or something? Can you hear midis outside of RM games, for instance?

It's probably a muted SW Synth. It happens when you play an mp3 in Windows Media player and turn the volume down....well at least with me for some reason.

Finished the game. Can't wait till Act 2.

Story:
Not bad, mixing in the serious state of the Commonwealth with the carefree adventures of Ryan and sometimes a sprinkling of Lavie (that was actually fun!) was done well. Flows really well. Humour and seriousness was mixed very well in this game.

Characters:
Ah. One of my favourite parts. All of the characters were very well thought out and worked well together. They all spoke to each other in a lifelike manner. One touch I find considerable for some reason is pauses in the text when the character should be pausing. That really helps with the flow of the talking. I also liked how they all had expressions, and it was a nice touch to make Lavie change from Annoying to Annoyed. The only character(s) I felt hadn't distinguished themselves were all the mothers. Obviously, Ryan and Armin seem attached to their mothers, but the mothers seem so generic. Lavie's grandmother was much better done, in my opinion.

Gameplay:
Challenging enough for me to have to redo the bird thing at the ruins more than a couple of times =P. I liked Lavie's mini-game a lot. It was hilarious (especially the headmaster and his son XD) and fun to do. I really liked the interaction between the characters and their environment. Being able to talk to the people in towns while they changed what they said from time to time really rocked, and I found myself talking to everyone with both Ryan and Lavie just to see what was different. I really liked the libraries too. Paz Cortez was just hilarious.

Music: Very good at parts, but not so good at others. I really liked the Lorean Gate music and some of the Mann Island Forest musics. I disliked others though, though I can't remember which. It was overall well executed though.

Graphics: Never seen the main character facesets before! There was a mix of RTP and Rudra facesets too that I found kind of strange right after playing some Aurora Wing (especially Katie = Sarah. Totally different characters). Maping was done well, and I find especially well in the Mann Island forests.

Overall: AWESOME game.

I finally got to getting through all of LAW: ep 1 and I have to say that this game is the best game ever created with rpg maker 2000 behind The Stupidest Game Ever Created. The Dialogue is extremely deep and plentiful with EVERY NPC, every NPC you talk to in the first town has lines and lines to say. The characters are better than any other characters I've found in any other RPG Maker 2k or 2k3 or xp game, each has their own personality and goals and has LOADS of dialogue (changing throughout the game). The music selection is the best I've heard in any independent game to date, loads of piano-ish jazzy music completing the pleasent world.

Admiral says to me "thank you for your kind words", but these are no kind words. These are straight facts: LAW is the best rm2k game I've found so far (I've played loads of indy titles including Channel Changer, NigSek, The Way Series; these hardly compare to the massive character of this rpg).

I just "saw" C'est Lavie and found it pretty amusing. The dialogue, music (especially the librarie's in that town which has a name I cant remember) and the characters (Henrik's my favourite, Ryan second and Juno third) are all great, though there are graphical issues.

Ohlichris: Library in the town you can't remember... Well, there are two towns with libraries (three, if you count Lavie's father's collection), so it could be either Lorean or Alton?

If theres one game I use reference to, it's usually Love and War. Law's characters basically carry the whole game no problem. Once you play about 15 minutes of the game you forget about everthing else in regards to mapping or even the plot itself. Why? because you're too busy wanting to learn about the characters.  It's an awesome game, it's been a good 3 months since I played it so I'm downloading again as we speak.

This one is easily on my favorite of all time list. I can only speculate on how entertaining LaW act 2 will be. -_-

Due to high recommendation from a friend, this is the first rpgmaker game I've ever downloaded, and I really like it so far. It's amazing how much detail went into making this. It's a little difficult for me (cuz I'm just bad at rpg's in general) so I wish there was some kind of walkthrough... but otherwise, I am totally into this game!

By the way! It's been brought to my attention that a file was somehow left out of the "Law1-RTP.zip" version, that causes battles in the Ozunhold subquest to crash. I've added the file now, but if anyone's downloaded that version before yesterday and are still playing, you may want to grab this file: http://www.blue-light.net/law/downloads/files/WasteRuins.png and save it in the "Backdrop" subdirectory. Styles, you should seriously consider drawing manga. With how much effort you put into this game I'm sure it would be about the same amount of effort.
You definitely know how to write a game, characters come first, then around the characters is a plot that feels "bigger" than the characters. But what REEEALLY sets it apart, is how everyone can relate to one character or another somewhere in there.

I want this game to prove to the world that they don't have to worry about graphics, and inspire newer game creators to create better STORIES, and stop trying to have the best game play, because lets face it, if you want to focus on game play, you'd be better off just learning programming.
This game has seriously been a cushion of hope to my anime, telling me that I CAN do it, and not to give up on my writing.

I hope that we see more games like this in the future. Not just from Admiral Styles, but from all aspiring rpg makers. If ANYONE wants to create a game like this, the world of indie gamers has your back 100%.

Draw manga, eh? Sounds like a neat idea, except for my lack of artistic skills, alas. :) Ah... I am fond of RPG Maker 2000, because it's given me the chance I would never have had, to tell a tale like Love and War. But sometimes I find myself pretty frustrated with its limitations. For one thing, subtleties can sometimes just get lost in the mix. When Lavie nervously chats with Ryan at one point or another, how can I show her fiddling with her hair a little, or shuffling in her seat, or examining her shoes? I can't, really. You try to compensate with cues in the dialogue, and portraits, and that kind of thing, but ya can't catch them all. Maybe someday, if I become a multimillionaire, I can go and create Love and War, the manga series/animé series/professional RPG!

Hmm, LAW: The Manga sure would be cool... Even something much more minor, like releasing a number of small self-contained issues covering some of the more important moments in Act I would be awesome. Ah well. A guy can dream, can't he? :)

And if people just wanted a good story, they'd just read a damn book.

Mind you, I'm a big fan of this game because it does so many things right.

The great writing makes you not mind talking to NPCs all the time, the level layout of this game is good. The levels themselves, however could stand to be a bit prettier.

This game is not a one trick pony, it has plenty to offer that books dont. That mini game towards the end of the first act was especially good.

Well, uh... Hey everyone, look! It's Twinfoxtails! And he's doing stuff!!!

Seriously though folks, concrete progress has been made recently on Act II. With new additions to the LAW team, if all continues as it has, I am hopeful for a release sometime this year. :)

Sure, although much of the mapping is currently being redone, likely making at least some of these screenshots obsolete. :)

Great game

It proved that the greatest graphics don't make a game good

I loved the character interaction and the realism of each character!

When is Act II coming out, and I suppose its on Rm2k not 2k3?

Dude, can you please tell me what to do in the first town? I went to the docks, the graveyea-rd and lavie`s room,  I talked to everyone I could talk to, what must I do? I can`t enter the park, the fat monk thing is still in front of the door and he won`t exit his village (I even double talked to everyone because some have 2 dialogue scenes).

Please tell me, I want to get the hell out of that town! I`ve been in it for an hour!

Whoa, this thread liiiiiives once more!

Bagels!: Hehe, thank you for the praise. Unfortunately, I can't give any specific release date. I can only state it won't be in 2007...    I'll be sticking with RM2K, indeed.

Nightblade: Looking forward to your own offering. :)

RPGer: Being stuck is never fun... If you're still not sure what to do, try checking the text file for a "mini-walkthru" that can get you through the first day. Hopefully, that'll help.

TFT: Gasp! Did you never get a chance to finish Act I? I... I feel a crying smiley coming on...

Not sure if I'm "allowed" to per se, but here are a couple more Act II screenshots:

Aw man, I'm getting chills seeing more stuff coming up. Love and War has to be one of my favorite RM games so far, and that's just because of the characterization and the dialogue. That chart's pretty nice too. I've been trying myself to develop worlds like that; I just can't get it from head to paper.

Also, I was browsing around Japanese sites, and I found this. It made me think of, well, you and your stuff. XD

By the way, a most dedicated LAWyer recently completed a walkthru for Act I, which can be found here: http://www.freespaces.com/lavalamp5/Love%20and%20War%20walkthrough.html  On the whole, it's quite a thorough guide! I've started playing through Act I, and I say.. there certainly aren't many problems with it... though I must make some suggestions.

1. The beginning town, where you had to talk to everyone, seemed a little too drawn out, and I was itching to get onto the battles.
2. Mapping could be a little better, such as docks, and the appearance of the ship. Also, houses and roofs could do with a little
adjustment to make them blend better and appear smoother. I haven't seen any real problems with the inside maps yet.
3. When I see clocks in the game, they all appear to be lying on the ground. It might look better if you raised them all by one tile
so that they're completely on the wall.

I really liked C'est Lavie! The female part of the voice acting was really good, I can't say the same for the male voice though it sounds kinda' dull.

- A bit more enthusiasm while doing Lavie Sandiego's voice would make it better
-Sometimes the level of music and voice is really imbalanced, I think you should either tone down the music or raise the volume of the voice.

The part where she is confused, the one with all the voices and different Lavies is really good! It reminded me of some similar scenes from Farscape, the humor as well :)

You should definitely incorporate voice acting in some places of your game, especially if it's as good as in C'est Lavie, it would add up to the atmosphere of the game, help us understand the characters better, add emotion and so on.

More people have to reply to this topic and give their reviews about the game after playing it. Love and War I is just such an amazing game, an instant classic. It's bright and comedic and at the same time has more serious aspects to it (most of them coming up in the future, ACT: II).

Again, more people that have played the game and havn't replyed to this topic have to seriously get crackin' on even a short review.

Also, those that have played through and love Love and War should really get to signing up an account and posting a couple posts over at the LAW community over on the LAW website (http://www.blue-light.net/law/).

This game diserves the attention that The Legend of The Philosophers Stone has gotten so far on it's 2 Demos.

So please, if there are any people that are still out there or reading this post/topic, please post here or at his website (http://www.blue-light.net/law/) and support Admiral Styles. It might inspire him enough to get him working faster and more steady on LAW II, or we may see some really awesome side-projects come out pretty soon. :-)

I will comment on Act 1 as soon as I finish it but I haven't yet. I really like the story so far and the many fun moments. Admiral Styles sure knows how to write. The game is inspiring, I'd like to make something like that as well without having to worry about custom stuff and not using RTP because all I'm good at is making up stories and I have a few of them that could be turned into games :)

I've come to realize that even though you don't use any complex stuff in your game it's still so hard to make even something like it. For me at least, I don't remember the things I used to be able to do in RPG Maker. I tried making my own game and it took me 2 hours just to start off the intro which is only a few lines of text, the character jumping around and the map of a small room...

Post by: Mr.Nemo on May 03, 2008, 09:48:03 am
I played the first installment of LAW and I played this. I didn't complete it, but I think I should. However, I think that I am capable of giving some decent opinions of what I've experienced so far.

The better part of this game is truly, as most stated, the dialouge and the backstory (ie. the politics that are going on). I think you really managed to pull off what began as (in my opinion) a half-assed teenager-goes-to-hollywood but then SOMEHOW escalated into a intriguing plot. I would say that some of the dialouge between NPCs and the characters feels a bit off and sometimes odd, but you did manage to conjure a few laughs back here, so all in all, I wouldn't complain about that. Even though I could connect to the characters, I couldn't bring myself to like them; I do, however, really, really hate Juno :) so I guess you got me there.

Gameplaywise, it is simple, but simple works. One single thing that managed to greatly annoy me however, was the constant switching between random and on-touch encounters. You either have one or the other - and absolutly NOT on the same map I think this was the case in the mines at some point)

Graphics are... probably one of the weaker aspects of this game. They're clashing, are pretty horribly mapped and whatnot. The art looks very good I'd say, but the rest is...
Try and focus on a single source and style of graphics and practice. Take inspirition from other games with better mapping and blablabla thousands told you this already.

Musicwise and sounds, I think I absolutley DETESTED the songs in Davenport. That's the only impression it left on me, unfortunately.

Hope it helps.

Well, that sounds like a pretty sober and reasoned assessment Mr. Nemo, I appreciate it. :) It might be neat if you finished it (if you made it to the mines, you're pretty close to the end already!) but I wouldn't force it or anything. Glad you found some things to like about it, though, maybe I can improve a bit in Act II.

Oh, and: you really hated the music in Davenport? I guess there was a fair amount of RTP lurking there still, but I did think the Davenport theme was awfully nifty... Ah, well!

I'm replaying the game due to a small trick by my friend requiring a system restore and making me lose all of my RM Games and savefiles and... I'm even more amazed by this game.

Now that I generally know how the games go, I regret that I did not explore as much as I did this time through. There is TONS of stuff, even if they don't reward you for looking (perhaps a Moon Herb or something) that easily show the best mapping of the game, and every little thing shows so much detail and nuance. I find myself going to Glendale after every sleep, just to see the man say "The weather gods should be fastidious about Thursdays" and then Fridays, and then Saturdays. Or going to the Royal Navy Base to see what are Ryan/Lavie/Armin/Henrik's opinions on joining the Navy. I just keep on saying "WOW! Admiral Styles really thought this out." This is definitely my top RM game of all time, and is definitely on my top 10 list of games in general of all time. I just can't believe how well the characters are made, how much detail is placed into this game, how many little references here and there and small jokes, and personalities (even for secondary and even tertiary characters) there are in this game. This is not fanboyism: I cannot stress how much I believe Mr. Nemo is wrong. This is simply an amazing game.

Ouch. System restores are no fun, no fun at all. Even when they work...

I find myself going to Glendale after every sleep, just to see the man say "The weather gods should be fastidious about Thursdays"

Heh, I totally forgot about that... I think I put it in because I personally tend to notice things like that myself when I play RPGs. :) But only the truly dedicated will finish the game with the "rank" of Emperor Cool!

Well, once again, I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed Act I. But I do think that whether a player likes Love and War themselves depends on their own personal preferences. To use something of an example: the Metal Gear Solid series can be pretty polarizing. People tend to either love, love, love it, or find it to be a totally nonsensical mess and a complete waste of time. Something along those lines. Different things appeal to different people!

The funny thing is how Act I is just the tip of the iceberg in so many ways. It can be frustrating "building the base", and sometimes I just wanted to leap ahead and have big, huge, sweeping events happen all at once. But no, if I wanted to make the game true to my vision, it has to be a slow and steady progress. That's just me. :)

I really need to finish Act II. *grumbles*

Aw, you guys...

james_the_composer: I've actually thought about that. In fact, I'm strongly considering doing just that for Act III, splitting it into two parts (Act III, Scene 1, and Act III, Scene 2?), though I'm not absolutely certain. As for Act II, you think that might be a good idea? It makes a certain amount of sense I guess, since many moons and suns ago I had planned Act I, Act II, and Act III as all part of one mammoth RPG...

When I first started playing the game (mythological gods knows how long ago), I really thought the dialogue didn't fit. Like it should belong in a book or something. The writing is unabashedly hokey. That's why I like it, at least. I don't even mean any offense by this, but the RM community is based around a obsolete, pirated, japanese game engine so naturally a lot of us are young and kind of dumb. I think it's better that he wrote characters who were young and dumb too using a wide frame of reference, instead of going way out of depth and trying to write main characters who were ARMY GENERALS and shit. It made for a bunch of characters who feel more honest than the ones in most other RM games I've played, at least. I mean some of it's just bad and the writing quality drops off noticeably between the stuff at Lorea Mine and Davenport Peak, but other than that it's a pretty charming game!

Bandito: At first glance nothing seemed wrong, but I think I know what the problem is... For some weird reason, examining the right side of the ladder will eventually teleport you to a map that doesn't exist. For now, you can avoid that error by just examining the left side to continue onward. Sorry for that, I'll try and upload a fixed version soon. Bugs, how do they slip by?!

oh and i've played them all, well all the complete ones since 2002.

Looks like i'll have to replay the game to get ready for act 2.

I know this sounds silly but I can't find that famous adventurer who is giving away a prize for winning a game in the gardens. I already managed to find 3 stone tokens...Any insights??

This is hands down one of the best RM games out there. I remember playing it a few years back and was amazed at the depth of the storyline although I think the rest of the game such as the battle system could be worked on. Hats off to admiral styles for creating an awesome game and I will be awaiting further releases.

A bit unusual, indeed.  Sorry about that, the LAW page has moved, so all the links were broken for a while. I've fixed 'em now, so hopefully they should work now, Commodore.  :)

Indeed it does! You can check out the first post for more details. As for Act II, the main obstacle was the work on the revamp of Act I, so we'll see what happens now...
