EDIT: IF I DONT REPLY TO YOUR PM, I AM NOT IGNORING YOU. JUST BE PATIENT OK LOVE? THANKS
So the last GW6 topic was created back at the start of summer, it's now the end of summer and people are a bit confused as to what's going on!
I personally did not know myself how GW6 was going until about a few weeks ago when I decided to come back to this lovely place on the internet. Unfortunately, GW6 development slowed down near the end of summer.
I really want to see the site get done because east did such a great job on the layout, and you all deserve to stop seeing COASTERCRAFT GOLD as the newest game on the main site.
With this in mind, I took over site development a week or so ago, and have been slowly working my way through, and figuring out exactly how it needs to be all done. Things are coming, but I work full time, have relationships, friends, etc so my time is limited, but still enough to get the coding done I hope! However, there is many more aspects of GW that need work and that is where I need your help! But first...
I have made a decision that I want to release GW6 in a minimal form, so for example in Week 1 of release, the only "new" thing will be games. Staff and users alike would be able to manage games and have them posted on GW. Everything regarding games (That isn't solely linked to another part of the site) would be up and running. Then, other portions of the site would just link back to old GW5 content until it got done.
With this setup, we can get new content rolling out faster and people will be able to give their opinions on GW6 and things that might be hard to change 5 months from now, will be much easier to change now! I would like to hear your opinions on this idea btw, so please post!
Regardless if you like the idea or not, GW needs people. The staff is pretty much DEPLETED since the site hasn't seen an update in months. I want to start slow, and get going on a staffer or two who would be highly interested in doing Games (By this, I mean adding games, screens, downloads, managing it all, etc). Apart from Games, if you're interested in becoming a writer, moderator, or anything you think you'd be good at for GW, then please feel free to pm me and we can talk about it!
That's about it. If you guys like my idea of releasing the site in "parts", then we could have something out soon as I finished all forms of Game coding this past Friday, and am now working on the layouts for all the pages. After that, it's merely getting the basic user panel and such working and we can work from there, but of course before I do that -- I need your opinions! :)
-
I like the parts idea. If I understand it correctly, basically if that certain part of GW6 isn't completed yet, then it will just link you to that part from GW5 right? That's good so you can still see some of the older stuff while you wait.
I wish I could help with the staff part but I have no experience, don't have lots of free time to do it, and no one here likes me. I'm just glad to see you are back working on GW Bart! It wasn't the same without you!
P.S. Where is my prize!?
-
Yeah, I definitely agree that making GW6 available ASAP is better than waiting God-knows-how-many-months until the WHOLE THING is perfect and released.
By saying that other non-game stuff will link to GW5 content, that doesn't mean that those links will lead to GW5 content in GW5 SITE LAYOUT, will it? I'm assuming everything will be under east's new layout right?
-
^^ No, if the section isn't done it'll just link to the old site. It would take just as long putting all the old content into GW6 as it would to code the new parts of it.

Yea, that's exactly how it'll be.
also, here is your prize:

ZOMG, beautiful prize Bart -- I am ECSTATIC to see you behind GW again. I was so sad when I came back to GW a few months ago and found out you had NOTHING to do with it anymore.
I like your idea for changing it piece by piece, it pleases all those people who are impatient for GW6, and helps bring problems in slowly.
(As in, instead of getting every error on GW6 reported on the day it comes out, you get a few errors on the day this section is released, then a few more on the day another section is released, etc...)
EDIT:
Oh my god, this topic was so awesome, it crashed GW forums on my computer... for like two seconds.
-
Yeah, the "parts idea" sounds like a good plan. It'll probably help the project move along quicker, and like you said, it should make it easier to change things. Plus, I am eager to see the main site active again.
Also, just so everyone is aware: The Dictionary will be transferring over to a wiki before the end of this year, hopefully around the same time as the completion of GW6. Discussion about the wiki can be held/read in this topic (http://www.gamingw.net/forums/index.php?topic=50047.0).

How dare you say that... Coastercraft Gold is a quality game!!!

I think that this is a cool idea. GW5 was pretty much just all thrown up at once with the exception of a few pages, and I can understand how it would have been frustrating and time consuming for you to add new features after the layout had been rolled out.
Regardless if you like the idea or not, GW needs people. The staff is pretty much DEPLETED since the site hasn't seen an update in months. I know I've pulled a Mori (no offence to Mori, he rocks) and left staff twice - though the second time was for personal reasons, I do love to help. I did games for what, six or seven months, and it was pretty fun, but I bet any senior staffer left right now wants to get their paws on that position.
I'm a piss poor writer, and I'd avoid that position with a passion except... To interview! Yeah, if you ever want an interviewer or some shit, I'd love to run around the community like a nosey little dick prying into people's personal lives or whatever. It's actually something I'd like to take a stab at in some form or another in my life.
I won't even touch on moderating, because I don't think that users should come asking about that sort of position - the staff should come to them.
Resource adding was fun, but I was stuck with the old GW staff panel which was really limited. I never checked out the resources section in the GW5 staff panel, so I have no idea how it works.. But if it is pretty flexible and stuff (more than picking a picture from a list of ten or so and entering a description/category for it), I wouldn't mind doing that.
That's about it. Yes. Release it in parts. That is my opinion!!!
Seriously though, great idea. I'd imagine that the site could turn out to be super flexible and friendly if it is done this way.
-
Holy shite that prize is amazing! Thanks Bart!
-
I think it's a wonderful idea. Just having games updated alone would be worth it while everything else is in the process of being done. Definitely will get a lot more game and member traffic.
-
Yeah, I think it's a good idea in general. I'm always available to help with whatever you need help with on the site should you need someone to fill a position.
I look forward to the whole thing regardless.
p.s. final fantasy CHAOS SHADOWS > coastercraft gold
-
Yeah, I won't have the patience to wait for the whole thing to be done :)
The plan sounds good...
-
Can't wait to see the main site bustling with activity again. :D I used to check it every day, but then it all died VERY QUICKLY. Releasing it in parts would be great.
-
I'm pretty excited to see GW6 finally start to come around, it's been looking great since the start (Except the, you know, deadness).
If you need a staff position or something filled, I wouldn't mind doing it. You have my MSN dont you bart?

Ya I do, in profile.
-
Ya I do, in profile.
Give me a jingaling if you want me to do anything, then.
-
I used to go the main site all the time! and then i started getting into the forums and around my 100th post it stopped :( But yeah, parts are good, and keeps the site fresh and healthy.
If you need a mod or a staff member or someone to help you out i can, i was a former staff member at Golden Falcon...that british one, im still friends with Stormx...anyway, yeah im pretty sure my msn is in my profile or you can use my pm, but im not getting my hopes up for obvious reasons.
-
The main site was pretty good back when things were updated regularly, I used to check it every day to see if new games or reviews came out, but sadly they just kinda stopped suddenly...
I was ever so heartbroken (lol?)
One thing I think you should do (if you haven't considered it already) is provide hosting for small games, most of the older games left on the main site pretty much lead to broken links and so we've been trying to revive them by making the 'Rare Games Topic' in Game and Demo.
Hosting games however would surely make things more efficient and 'clean' since most of the newbies of today only use temp hosts such as rapidshare and megaupload...
I'd even go as far as doing all of the transferring if everyone else isn't bothered...

Boy, with that kind of attitude you'll get nowhere!
Really, if you're interested just PM me with what you want to do, why you think you can help, etc. I'll get back to everyone who PM's me. Doesn't mean all of them will be HIRED but I'm not going to ignore someone just because they have a low post count

Ya, one of my huge quirks is broken links due to 3rd party hosts. I really want to host ALL games put on GW (Outside of any special ones that demand an outside link) and I probably will have that done for the new game section

Have you ever developed a complete application before? The parts idea is not a good idea because you end up with halfassed work.
Like, if you are going to do it then do it all, and do it right.
-

I've developed several full scale applications (For businesses omg!!!) since my last coding of GW, so I have a much better understanding on how to seperate my code and keep it all logical and flowing. I don't see how it would be half assed work when all the sections are seperated into their own modules/etc
I don't see how it can't be done right and done well just doing piece by piece. That's how coding is going anyways. It's not like one day I'm working on games and then I decide to work on articles. I get games done, then I move to articles, so instead of letting my code sit and rot I'm releasing it to the public quicker.

Stormx
holy shit, stormx. what ever happened to him?
-
holy shit, stormx. what ever happened to him?
Hes around, but hes out of the whole ameutr game scene i think. More into web design and annoying me on msn
-
The parts thing seems like a good idea as long as the whole site looks and feels coherent. As for staffing, Rowain offered me a position about a month or two back, sent you a PM about it.
-
Yeah that sounds pretty cool. Releasing in parts. Will the MAILBAG be revived? I used to love that shit back in the day...
Also Bart can I suggest a movie forum... I tried suggesting it some time ago but I don't know what happened. But these days it seems movie topics are being flooded! So yeah.
-
Good idea, and it'll be greatto see how GW6 is progressing as it goes along :D
-
Uh.. I understand hiring staffers and shit, but do we really need more mods? :x
-
This is very exciting news. Did you still want a list of all the games that's links still work and shit? I'd be kind of prepared to go through all the links. I've already started and on;y have 24 of the letters of the Alphabet left.
I'd also love to do some form of staff work again as I was extremly proud of my Staff position. I don't think I could handle being a game adder again as that's a lot of work but I wouldn't mind doing things with the games once they were up. Like screens and the such.
Actually, when the games do start coming around could it be a rule for people to submit their games with screenshots? Much like in Game and Demo. I don't feel it should be a Staffer's job to play the games and add the screenshots themselves. (And having done this for a year, I can say it's rather time consuming.)
Also, reviews. I'd love to do them.
-
I think this is a great idea. I'd be really happy to see the main site going again, even if it's one part at a time.
As for the staffing issue, I'd be interested in becoming a Reviewer again when that part of the site is finished. I enjoyed that, and only gave up on it because every newpost was filled with comments like "LOL WHERE IS NEW GAMEZ THIS SUCKS!1!!"
-
I think the release-in-parts idea might work, as long as those parts are as functional as possible.
-
Well i sent you a pm about staffing stuff, anyway, yeah, like i said parts is a good idea.
Movie forum sounds cool, cause movies are cool...and yeah!

It didn't help the fact that you were a horrible reviewer :D
But Fade showing an interest in this has only made my interest stronger.
Grunthor get here now.

I concur, it is starting to feel too lively in the mod forums as it is.
-

Sorry, when I meant moderators I meant a person or two to moderate over all GW content. Ie, comments, reviews, etc
-
I like the sound of you uploading each new section as you complete it. That way nobody has to wait as long and it should start shifting focus more and more onto the site (from whence it hath diminished).
Will you be moving all GW5 content to GW6? I know half of the articles have 'artifacts' and probably can't be directly moved without being re-written. So they may have to be purged or something.
Nonetheless if you need a composer, I'd be happy to do that. MP3 and / or MIDI. I'm actually good at making music now (unlike back when I wrote articles). Outside of that I would also take great joy and pride in being an article writer once again. I had a lot of fun doing that. (the good ol' tiems)
-
Old content will be moved over yes, it'll just take a bit of time figuring out what can be moved and what needs to go.
-
Hey if GW needs composers I am totally up for that! I'm not entirely sure why Gaming World would need composers though?
-

I'm not too fond of having a big sound/music directory for people to download from on GW because it really doesn't give credit to the composers.
I haven't put much thought into it but a music section with basically a Composer "Profile" where they could add their own songs, post random tidbits, have their stuff reviewed, etc. Almost like a forum thread I suppose, but all of it would be centralized into one. Additionally, i was thinking since we want to expand our areas a bit. We could have people reviewing new "game music". Tons of games now a days have original sound tracks released and I think it would be cool if those got a bit more exposure. I became a huge fan of the Katamari Damacy OST and I didn't even know it existed!
-
Ahh right, I thought it would be something like compiling a list of "GW Music" That people could use in their games.

This along with the rumored "artist's pages" is starting to make GW sound much more personalized. I like it. APPEAL TO THE PEOPLE! When you want to build a large house, sell people rooms.
-
Yeah, as long as the "artists pages" element is still on the development queue, I'm not complaining.
And the release in parts is a good idea, given that each part is 100% complete before being added.
-
Oic. In that case this all sounds good get to it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! is it done yet
-
Wait what I'd like to contribute to a GW collection of RPG midis or whatever. If someone wants to use my compositions in games I'm fine with that. So yeah, that'd rock pretty cool.
BTW what happened to RTP's death?
-

If there is interest in it I'll definitely create a directory but it'll be a bit different then HERE IS A LIST OF MIDIS AND THE AUTHORS NAME IS HIDDEN IN A SMALL CORNER HERE kind of deal like it has been in the past
-
I am willing to help GW however I can!!
(spacelion does these things)
I can't do many things well, but I can do many things! ;)
So yah- I have a shitload of freetime so I could like take some day or something and moderate comments on games and reviews or something
seriously hurry up with gw6 i am excited :DDD
edit:
i will also contribute resources in the future
-
BTW what happened to RTP's death?
I think it must've gradually died. Oh the irony... :brow:
RTP's Death (http://www.gamingw.net/forums/index.php?PHPSESSID=04754dc7bdf635e789416e6c2672a81a&topic=34196.msg582193) This is the last that can be found of it. It's a shame because before Chris restarted it, it was for all intents and purposes almost finished. I think there was only about 10 MIDIs left to do. Is it worth trying to start it up again? I don't know but it was a cool idea.
-
Well if you are worried about people not crediting the artists that's gonna be a pain. People AREN'T going to credit the artists even if you put it up there. People (and by people I mean us, the artists) would just have to settle with that fact and do it for the purpose of making good music and being helpful.
imo
Then again I don't know.
-

Well, I am only speaking from experience but going from a programming stage to an intermediate release stage does take time for they are not the same thing. You end up cutting off features and leaving dead end links so you could shift development on another aspect of the site. It complicates further when you decide you need to change some workings to accomidate new intermediate steps, but you already have parts of what needs to be changed published. Like, I don't see any good grounds to justify releasing the unfinished product at all besides.. showing off a new layout or whatever. Just do it man, its a lot of busy work essentially but not that complicated. The public doesnt need it quicker if it isnt going to work as advortised. Just dont let it turn into vaporware.

There is something called a Planning/Analysis stage in Project creation. You know, plan it all out, figure out what goes where, diagrams and all that jazz! Then you begin coding
Ya, who would have thought college actually taught me something useful?
And I don't see how it wouldn't be working as advertised when "as advertised" is "Hey, this works great. But the rest of the site is still coming along, and if you are goign to whine about it then sorry -- Public opinion wanted it this way"
-
Bart, is there any way you could make a list of exactly what sort of staffers you need, and what you need them to do? I'm interested in a position (who isn't though) but I'm not sure what would be needed the most, and what I'd be most useful for.
-
I'd love to be a mod, but the only forums I'd be interested in modding don't need any more.
-

I think a music section would be a very cool addition to the new GW if worked out. I also love the idea of people reviewing game music. I would be totally up for doing that!
-
I still very much like the idea of expanding GW into other areas such as Web Design/Development tutorials/resources/articles and a deviant art sort section (for premium/moderators). I hope you are still planning to go ahead with such things because that would be cool!
-
Did you ever actually finish the new staff panel? I remember you were working on it shortly before you stepped down, but I don't recall you ever finishing it.
-

Does it matter? (And, no)

I don't know if this was discussed anywhere else, but it's the first time i've heard it and I like it a lot! GW is supposed to be a site for "independent game developers," however it seems like 99% of it is actually "independent RM2K developers". Now this is obviously because 99% of the people are using RM2k (and all its brethren), but I think it would be awesome if we had a section devoted to programming/web design. Obviously this section wouldn't be ONLY about games, but IMO it might encourage other people to move away from these "makers" and try out real programming.
Also I have yet to find a good community (although I've never really looked...) for developing Windows apps (ie in C++) and using OpenGL/DirectX, etc.
Anyways if you do make this "section", I would love to help out with that.
-
Yah, I think it'd make the site release a lot smoother. If I remember correctly, one of the past versions of GW had a few problems when it was released. And in the long run, it'd allow for the site to be a lot better since you'll be tweeking the currently release section of the site until it's perfect!
-
I definitely would like a section like that and I'll see what I can do!
-
Yes! Finally, I am looking so forward to this, first werewolf, and now gw6, it's like a dream come true.
-
Everything sounds pretty good! If you need me for staff and SHIT, I used to write for DOP (lol) and I need to write more anyway!
-
I'd be happy to get into writing articles again, since it's been a while. I also wouldn't mind scouring the entire article database for articles with messed up encoding, lower quality, wrong section assignment, and the occasional duplicate entries that occurred in years past since there was no way to delete articles.
Articles are and always were my kind of thing. I just love them.
-
Awesome, and cool that you're back!
P.S. Mateui, yes, keep writing. Your articles rocked.
-
Too the reviewers: It would be cool, if the reviews had a general guideline for scoring. And if there are more then one review, the GW Score for the game would be the average of the total reviews.

Yeah I second this, it just seems like the best idea to me.
Keep up the good work everyone working on this!

is the gwmail system comin' back?
are the ipb forums archived?
(off topic: downloading coaster craft now btw)

no, forum pms will be integrated though
im not sure about ipb
-
I haven't written any tutorials since October 2004 so this is going to mean BIG CHANGES
-
no, forum pms will be integrated though
im not sure about ipb
so you will be able to read pms by using the main manu?
cooool......
and you really dont know what happened to the ipb topics?
cant you search? the are a BIG part of gw's history and it would be a pity to losse em
but anyway nice work done in the old one bart..... hope the next one to be equally good! :)
-
Just throwing this out there, but I can still write articles. I'd love to do this if we get a strong front page audience like back in the day. Before it became impossible to post anything, we weren't getting any comments due to the bug that hid the names of the posters. If this kind of stuff gets fixed, I think the article portion of the site could be just as awesome as it used to be.
-

Sorry I was gonna reply to this but then STUFF CAME UP
Rowain is still an admin and will probably iron out an official list of what we need and do all that hiring business, but he won't be doing it until GW comes closer to completion
-
Yeah, I don't want to hire people since final sections and features are WIP and I don't want inactive staff for 5 months before it goes live.
-
Sounds cool, Bart. I might actually want to lend my talents of doing nothing again. :<

I could do that with tutorials, or it might take a bit longer.

Old content will be moved over yes, it'll just take a bit of time figuring out what can be moved and what needs to go.
What about hiring people (not that I am offering, too lazy) to check through the old content (maybe spell check tutorials and correct any mistakes) to find what is worth transferring/re-submitting when GW6 is ready?
-
By the way are you still planning to do GW People?

thats the plan
and nothing to say about GW PEople for now
-
let's just ditch the whole thing and make a myspace clone
-
Sounds like a plan!
-
I for one am in favour of keeping stickies uncluttered with joke replies thanks.

Ask and you shall recieve.
Yeah thats a good idea, having a team of loyal GWer's search the site in a seemly organised order to flesh out the broken stuff and possibly give some quality feedback, Is there any rough estimation as to when this can get underway?
-
Would now be a good time to ask about GWArena?
I'm really lookin' forward to this Bart, here is my morale support.
-
I am in favor of GW Ducatz

This weekend Ill post a topic about it, unless something comes up

GW Arena was a silly experiment with too much work behind it. I would love to make something smaller in size, but it's not something I'm interested in doing at the moment!!

Well well look at how GW is expanding it is almost frightening!!
While I am in favor of less RPGmaker development, more different game development, I just hope all these new features don't draw too much attention away from the core concept of the community but instead contribute to it if at all possible. Like, I hope artist/composer subcategories don't become isolated mini-deviantarts but instead places where people can download license-free graphics and music for their games (naturally though you could still upload more classic CG pieces/lyrical music that wouldn't make much sense in RPGmaker games anyway and state that THESE ARE MY WORKS DO NOT TOUCH THEM.)
Also if we get a specific section for artists with a full fledged comment system what will be the point of the graphical arts forum anymore(unless it gets integrated or something.)
I might be dealing in absolutes here though since you could indeed just make a separate resources section where people can upload their pixels if they feel like it...though personally I think it a bit clumsy to have two "graphic & art" sections but w/e.
Also I am not sure if an unique section is necessary for programming and game development; GW5 had them in the resources section and we can just categorize them properly....unless there is something extra special to be discussed there.
-
i have no plans of making a seperate section for programming and such, atleast initially. The section may expand to a point where we do make its own section.
dont worry about things becoming too seperated, empty, etc. I have a good idea of what needs to be put where and how much focus we need on a certain subject so ... yeah
Also you can ask the same question WHATS THE POINT OF GAME AND DEMO FORUM if we can post games on GW that get rated, reviewed, etc. It's the same idea! Forums just allow for further discussion and are more open, which wuold be the same case with the graphical arts forum
-
Well, in GW5 games could only be reviewed, which eliminates the possibility of casual discussion and makes forums necessary, but in an art section where you can freely comment pictures it would be pretty much just an arts forum with a snazzy index page.
Then again this is much ado about oh hell there might be two instances of this image in the gw space and I admit an arts forum would be necessary for discussion about art methods, games etc.
-
Ya, I understand where you're coming from but when Rowain goes to the art forum and posts this (http://www.gamingw.net/forums/index.php?topic=51544.0) and the response is basically "Yes, we want this" then I guess we gotta go through with it eh?!
Really, if it was in my best interest I wouldn't bother with an artist sections because I kind of feel the same way you do, but if public opinion wants it then we'll get it done and it won't be to the extent that it will eliminate the need for the Art forum
-
also if im not making sense, its because its 3am and im still awake for some reason
-
that's cool bart have some :koolaid: to freshen up
anyways that Rowain's graphical arts topic brought up some possibilities I hadn't considered so I am now pretty cool with this. I just hope musicians get something like that too because otherwise it'd be sort of...unbalanced.
-
I'm glad we'll be getting an arts section. I think LORd's suggestion of a music section might be a good idea too.

You have to remember that its unlikely we'd post everything on our artist's page. When it comes up, I'll probably use it as an online gallery so only work that I think is suitable would go there. Anything like wips or sketchbooks would likely go to the forums. Theres a difference between comments and critiques.
