Title: Desktop Thread [Image intensive]
Post by: Stadsport on August 30, 2005, 11:26:17 pm
Looks like the old one went bye-bye with the merge, so why not start a new one?
Update
Because of the new forum, you can now add hidden content that's displayed on a click. This is good for this thread, as desktop images tend to be hueg like xbox, and people can view only those they wish to see without making the page equally hueg.
Do this:
[hide=Title or description][IMG]url of your image[/IMG][/hide]
And you get something like this:

Please post your images like this to keep this thread neat.

Interesting how your "Windows Vista" setup claims to be Windows NT 5.1 (aka Windows XP).

Yeah, that crap came with the skin. But it's cool, it also replaced a lot of system icons (things like notepad even), and the avis that play when you're deleting, copying files, etc.

Well, this isn't what my desktop usually looks like, but it looks cool anyways.  I'm using Sphere XP as my background, and this is obviously not a center view of my destop. I did it all crooked and off center on purpose.  Then I was looking at the paint.net image it made, and thought "wouldn't it be cool to have the picture of my desktop be a picture of me making a picture of my desktop?" and used print screen again.  So here you have it, a picture of what my desktop looked like while I was making a picture of it.(http://www.whahay.net/pubaccess/desktop18.jpg) By the way, where can you download windows skins?  I'm tired of the two that came installed on my computer.

My place of choice is DeviantArt. That's my place of choice for backgrounds too. I usually have some nice art as my desktop background, but I like this simple light-green color I found.http://skins.deviantart.com/themes/ (http://skins.deviantart.com/themes/)

It's defintitely a step up. My first time using Linux was "Xebian" on my Xbox over a year ago. I installed Hoary only a few days ago, and felt like it had come a long way since my first Debian-encounter. I installed Breezy yesterday, and it's just continuing that trend.

Yes huh. Although I switched back due to lack of coolness with editting the taskbar. Plus I never use my desktop. But I think I'm going to keep this thing that lets me have multiple desktop... So I can have all my windows for working on Trisphere open on one, and then another thing for doing everything else in another, and it takes under a second to switch back and forth... It'll let me split up all my windows and such, without totally destroying my computer's resources.

patch your uxtheme.dll in windowsfor sp1:site (http://www.softpedia.com/get/Desktop-Enhancements/Themes/UXTHEMEDLL-Pack-DLL-for-SP1-included.shtml) for sp2:site (http://www.softpedia.com/get/Desktop-Enhancements/Themes/UXTheme-Patch-For-Windows-XP-SP2-Final.shtml) use the replacer (http://www3.telus.net/_/replacer/) to patch, use the stable version.the uxtheme.dll is located in C:\WINDOWS\system32once thats done, download your themes and drag em into C:\WINDOWS\Resources\Themessome themes don't show up in the display properties (you know when you right click and click properties on the desktop). so just change the theme by double clicking on the file itself if that happens. There might be an easier way to do this btw i dunno though

Well programs like WindowBlinds have little goodies that people think are great enough to buy (Alpha blended window borders, contex buttons movable, 0px borders, easy color changing, etc)I personally would just warez it, but there are no good WB5 themes out yet.

I can't believe how well this worked. It would just feel wierd to have things on the left... (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v410/Veripar/21.jpg)I got an external hard drive (160GB ^^) a few days ago so I moved all of my crap out of my laptop.  I'm going to be using the internal hard drive in my laptop for school (which won't be much...  What a waste...) and the external one for my games, web designing, pictures, music and back-ups.  I'm also partitioning it and installing linux so I can start to learn how to program in Python.

RK Launcher is slow and a resource whore. I'm not a particular fan of ObjectDock, but it beats Y'z Dock because of the EXE Access bug and RK launcher for its (amazingly, greater-than-ObjectDock) sluggishness.

First off, you need to install a hacked uxtheme.dll (don't worry, it's easy).  Go to this site: http://www.neowin.net/forum/lofiversion/index.php/t339820.html and they'll give you the DLL and instructions on installing it and the themes you'll find.As for the themes, you are looking for WINDOWS VISUAL STYLES.  The place I go to get them is http://www.deviantart.com and they give you another suggestion on the site which has the DLL file on it.EDIT:  It's also a good a good idea to turn on clear type when using visual themes, because they are generally optimized for it.  My suggestion for that is to go here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx and download and run the power toy labled "Clear Type Tuner Power toy.  It's a tiny download, it's easy to run, and it makes sure that the windows clear type is optimized for your preferences.  The other power toys are very good quality too.

I started using bblean and I think this is a setup I like. Its useful, informative, minimalistic, and very sleek looking. I plan on changing the colours around because it is the default and I think its too dark for my tastes, but as of now its about the functionality.

And leafo, what is that showing what you're playing. It looks very nice and I could use some more things like that on my desktop.

It's a never-ending quest to find the perfect theme, which is pretty much impossible because as my mood or interest changes, I'd want my theme to reflect that.

So technically that would be 4008's start button.

And if you can only find winamp plugins that you like, then pickup the winamp api emulator for foobar, so any winamp destop controls work with foobar just fine.

I know, I remember when 800x600 was more than enough for everything.

Look at it this way though, in a few years we will see resolutions such as 1600x1200 too small to be usable. Which is why I created this image.

JPEG is fucking amazing for compression.
The source image for that was around 94MB and using the JPEG algorithm, compressed it to less than 700KB.
BTW, I just did that as a mockup in photoshop to simulate the WHUXGA resolution.

With user interfaces becoming vector scalable in the near future, resolutions are actually going to matter less.

Okay, then good luck running a scaled 1600x1200 desktop on 800x600. Vector interfaces will just make larger resolutions more desirable in my opinion.

That's not the kind of situation that's likely to happen, though. I was referring to text being unreadable on high resolutions, which will most likely not be so anymore in the future.

No.

Since what he is saying would mean something like the windows xp taskbar would measure .5" on a 23" screen with a high resolution and .5" on a 18" screen with a lower resolution  because of vector DPI scaling.

So basically the resolution will only mean more detail instead of screen real estate, unless the user wants to change it.

Even in this situation the resolution matters. Anyone who does image editing would still want to work unscaled at a large resolution, for example.

I suppose, unless we get to the point where we can take pictures at a resolution so high it wouldn't even matter.
Or if we some how invented a vector camera.

Apps
Games
Weather in my area (switches to tomorrow and so on)

Yeah, I was going to say something (about the BG), but for a second I thought the image was resized improperly. I didn't even know they made monitors in that shape. As for the resolution, that must be terrible for watching regular 4:3 videos. All that black wasted space...

Uh, it is a normal resolution, he just distorted the pictures. He has two 1024x768 screens.

Yes, as my desktop image would imply I have two moniters. The screen shot I took was 2.1 mb so I had to distort like leafo said. I was going to say something in my first post but I figured that it would have gone without saying.

@2beers
The picture is way distorted. Everything is stretched out. As for my moniter use, I use the flat screen for watching videos, playing games etc. The other moniter is one I have left over from my old 98. I just use it to expand my work space. I will put like AIM, iTunes, and all of my other unimportant apps on the older moniter and things like Firefox or whatever I am watching on the newer one.

Yeah, I'm using XGL & Compiz on Ubuntu Dapper and yes, I realise that it's probably going to fuck up on me some time soon and destroy my sanity (though I can run the system without Compiz, but whatever).
Drop shadows disabled as they make my invisible gnome panels look shit.

Sorry about the compression, had to save as jpeg because the filesize got too big as png :o!

Now I need to figure out how to make the most use of this! Suggestions for XP tweaks and additions accepted!

(the image might not work right now because lazy breaks for me once in a while)

EDIT: it should work now!

Also, I've switched to Inspirat as visual style and put some toolbars/quickstart on the right side.

I hate having a cluttered desktop so I cleared it up before I took this screenshot. Normally I have shortcuts for everything on my desktop but I deleted them all. I also use my desktop to save random files and shit but then I sort them into folders afterwards and also oops i deleted my photoshop shortcut that is goin to blow.][

Strangely enough I just changed it to silver which is very nice.

My options being Standard, Snot Green or Silver.

I am liking Silver but that is probably just as bad as having Default Blue so maybe I will look for a place to get something different. (I REALLY DONT KNOW WHAT I AM DOING)

dude, 2 things very easy:

get a uxtheme.dll patch. they actually have programs that will patch it for you, one is probably called "uxtheme patcher" or something. do that. step 1 over.

go here: http://browse.deviantart.com/customization/skins/windows/visualstyle/?order=9&alltime=yes
and thats all :)

or you can be badass and BlackBox :)

He probably blacked out who he was talking to because they're not GWers and he doesn't want some idiots spamming them with random shit.

I mean, you can check out his MSN name at the bottom of EVERY SINGLE ONE OF HIS POSTS.

well I resaved it but only got it down to 3 megs, probably has to do with the amount of black you have in yours.

Also, I just disable the desktop icons, they get annoying if I have them on.

Exactly how many people here are using Windows Vista? I seen quite a few desktop themes that resemble that OS, or are they all just the skins of Vista? I have a copy of it but the system requirements of 12-15 gb just sounds stupid for an OS.

I love Reluna, it gives Windows 2000 such a soft feel over the standard color schemes.

Edit: No reason to make a new post I guess either.

Its Conky, and I'm pretty sure it won't compile in cygwin, but you could try.
You could always check out rainmeter for windows though, or samuraize but that rapes your RAM. (Conky is only using 25kb RAM :P)

Run this (http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/OS-Enhancements/UXTheme-MultiPatcher.shtml) to patch your uxtheme.dll, then go here (http://browse.deviantart.com/customization/skins/windows/visualstyle/) and have fun finding a visual style you like... simple as that.

I put it on that song for the sake of cling.

I've been in a love/hate relationship with Blackbox in the past, but I've finally settled down and customized mine enough to where I like it far better than the default Windows shell.  I'm currently looking for a nicer looking red skin though.  Also, I wanted to show off my Pride of Baghdad wallpaper--best graphic novel ever.  I set up the sidebar thing with my programs this morning, and that's turned out to be really awesome.

I hate how print screen doesn't get the cursor in the picture, because it looks like the menu is just floating out there somewhere.  So, for those that don't know, Blackbox has a right-click menu.  It's not some ugly menu in the middle of my screen.

It looks like a Murrine-engine theme with Compiz/Beryl window borders. There's no way in getting Metacity borders with alpha transparancy I guess?

And yes, wallpaper please. ;)

also, here is the pattern:

I dont know how I would give you a tutorial But pretty much I use beryl and a windows vista theme for it, then I use murrine gtk engine with its candy theme.

Wallpaper is from Teo. :) I'm going for a very simple tidy desktop.

Also, does anyone have a more Mac OS X RocketDock skin? As in, the same skin used for its dock, if possible.

Clean desktop, using HeyLove (http://heylove.deviantart.com/)'s new "Areao4.2 (http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/45532008/)" visual style - a new release, and a really nice update to her original Areao4 style.

Also played with Adium and the dock icons.

I customized my desktop again and went for a different feel - glassy this time. I'm using this (http://www.gamingw.net/bart/wallpapers/sunshine_WP-1143813205.jpg) wallpaper, with the Luna Element 5 (http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/29511577/) visual style. The dock at the bottom of my screen is RocketDock (http://www.punksoftware.com/rocketdock) (an exellent application), with various icons I've downloaded from the DeviantART Dock Icons (http://browse.deviantart.com/customization/icons/dock/) gallery.

Click on the picture to see it in larger sizes.

Using a wallpaper I made on my own, the Shaded (http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/10331722/) visual style, and YzDock with a smoky blue gradient theme at a fairly high transparency.

A majority of the icons in the dock are from the Reflections (http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/43145161/) icon set, and the others(pencil, check, movie reel, speaker, and music note) are from the Black (http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/36363561/) icon set.

Oh, have fun getting a peek at the resource tree for my current game... :O

Downloaded the current winning skin on the Samurize site. Called Edge.

Pretty swell yeah.. although I wish I had more uses for it. I keep it showing ONLY on my desktop but I could have it show ontop of everything, even though I can make it so I click through it... but it kinda harms view of irc/opera/etc.

Beryl is really just fun as a toy...  The sort of thing you use every once in a while and play around with(and show off to your friends to make them jealous of linux... or something like that)

But yeah, it can be kind of annoying to use all the time. (which is why I stick to KDE whenever I'm ACTUALLY DOING SOMETHING)

I like it. The only thing that bothers me is I would remove the shadow from the white design in the background, it makes it look really 90's. If it's anti-aliased properly it might look good without it, or even with a faint white glow.

The problem is those display styles use the standard "title bar, content" theme like Windows does, so it uses old-style Aqua titlebars and shit. Safari 3 uses what's called "Plastic", it's that smooth gray gradient.

Windows 3?

I don't know much about the history of computers.

Whether it was a guess or not, you are basically right! The 3.XX series of windows was the first to use it! Ironically all versions of windows up until windows XP SP2 had a fully functional version of it. SP2 removed the file and put a bunk file that just opened a file browser(which can be replaced with a functioning one). Vista doesn't even have that sadly...

I prefer it since its extremely light on resources. Requires alot less than Explorer.

thats it for today's class, hope you took notes! There will be a test!

You know, I thought that girl was incredibly hot until my roommate pointed out that she resembles Chucky.

Now I cannot look at her without shuddering.

Shes cute until I look at my laptop from about a 120 degree angle. I wonder what she looks like without the airbrush/touchups. :hmm:
Im thinking about changing my bg, but Im pretty fond of the bluescreen of death.

Edit:

Some generic crap I threw together.

Installed Samurize and configured it to show Processor load, Memory used and Harddrive time.

Ubuntu 7.10 using Gnome.
Most of those desktop icons aren't there normally, it's just that I have a few pen drives and a 2GiB SD card from my Wii in at the moment.
I've got more windows on the screen, but they are grouped to the Firefox window that's minimized as they may contain my secret files of doom or something  :naughty:

Actually, I did find one!

Here it is (http://anti-tgtsoft.com/repository/) for anyone else who is looking for it. it's under uxtheme->winxp->sp3

edit: yeah, ihateyou got it. it works, too. I'm using it now. You have to replace it manually.

I didn't know if it would work as I don't use Windows.
I did patch my SP2 install when I used it though as buying crap from TGT Soft wasn't something I was willing to do.

Well, I switched back to Lakrits VS because I felt like going back to a dark VS, so I made a new wallpaper up really quick...  I also made up a yzdock theme, set of icons, indicator, and poof, for the hell of it.  And I'm working on a skin for Opera. (not pictured) Yes, I'm insane.

Yeah basically I'm bucking fored with nothing to do so I'm doing shit...  Kinda funny how that works out, I guess.

EDIT: I've finished the Opera skin... well, the first version of it, at least.

EDIT2: Hooray my Opera skin is up for download on Opera's site!

I always show it to people and ask them to find out what's wrong with it. It takes some a while to figure it out but the look on their faces when they do is priceless. Found it here (http://www.vladstudio.com/wallpaper/?510).
