Title: Recent problems with GW.

As most of you probably noticed GW was down most of yesterday and a part of today, which also affected IRC since people couldn't connect to irc.whahay.net since the DNS was down as well. I contacted our provider earlier today, and they've been working on fixing the issue ever since.

After some investigation the problem seemed to be a broken CPU fan of the server. Our provider first suspected a bad power cable and the power supply, and tried to replace them as well, which didn't fix the problem though (this is why the server was up for 5-10 mins couple of times before, but crashed right after). The CPU fan has been replaced now, and everything's good. Now many of you probably have thought of the possibility what I'm going to tell you now. It's very likely that the slowdowns we've been experiencing in past couple of months were caused by this. A malfunctioning/broken CPU fan can really stress the system and slow it down a lot (trust me, I know from experience). Let's hope that the replaced CPU fan will help the whole server run more efficiently and without problems.

If the IRC server is still not working for you, it's because your computer and/or ISP has cached irc.whahay.net. You shouldn't worry as it shouldn't take long until it resolves again. If you're having this problem but still want to use IRC, you can connect using the IP instead: 72.20.48.35

Anyway thanks for being patient (except Bobberticus who highlighted me continuously on IRC during night with "rami gw is down" while I was sleeping) and have a good day!!

We aren't changing servers, and I'm pretty sure that the broken CPU fan was the source of most of the problems we've been experiencing. It could happen with any company.

But if you want to donate some money, you can donate for my personal booze money collection (although I haven't made a donate button yet).

I don't pay a dime. Bart's the one who pays for the server, so that question should be answered by him.

I wasn't lying. GW is running out of RAM, and it does start swapping everytime someone does a search. It's for sure that it slows down the forums, but it's possible that the real cause of the massive slowdowns were because of the broken CPU fan. Or to be more precise, it "amplified" the effect. Even with broken CPU fan things would work ok if the CPU isn't under load, but when things start getting under heavy load, broken CPU fan can make it all work a lot slower.

I'm a poor person and an alcoholic. Mostly it was because esp told me he'd donate if I had a booze collection so yeah, this is the result.........

Yeah, because ANYONE searching would kill the server.

Regardless of any problems we have now, GW is simply much faster and stable than it was before.

Be more specific than that. What happens when you try to enter? If it's something that doesn't have to do with the issue at hand, you should post a topic in Site Feedback Forum (http://www.gamingw.net/forums/index.php?board=95.0) (with detailed explanation of your problem).

Anyway, regarding the original issue, I can with some sort of confident say that the broken CPU fan apparently was the source of most of the problems, since the forums have pretty much worked flawlessly ever since it was replaced. The search should be somewhat more efficient with the next version of SMF, at least if we enable the fulltext search engine that it has. Anyway since it hasn't been a problem now, it's all good.
