I'm thinking about setting up a linux distro on a computer, but I'm not sure which would be a good one. I don't really want something that's too similar to Windows, I'm leaning towards Ubuntu or Window Maker but I'm interested in hearing your suggestions on some good ones.

Ubuntu and Linux Mint are two really good options. My recommendation is trying on a virtual machine or even through the Windows 11 Linux Subsystem before committing so you can get some experience with it. But if you have an old laptop or computer lying around, might as well give it a try that way if it's easier.

Regarding linux. Does anybody know how well MAME works with linux? I've been thinking of getting a small laptop and using it for MAME.

For that, I'd recommend checking out batocera if your purpose is to use it solely for retro gaming.

Well, it's not the sole purpose of what I want to do, but this information does look useful though, I'll check it out.
