Title: Pokemon XS - Updated Weekly
Post by: Majin Sam on April 17, 2007, 10:59:17 am
This will very likely be the first and last comic of this.  It's the result of me waking up far too early this morning and being bored.

Also, different people have different tastes.

I'm more than willing to accept any constructive critiscms you have, but posts like that don't help anyone.

Dear Majinsam,

I enjoy your webcomics very much and would like buying them for publication in a local newspaper (pm me for extra details).

How much would exclusivity to your comics be worth?

Sincerly, Eltee.

Actually, I'm ashamed to admit, I'm fairly certain I had similar taste when I was 17.

I'd like to think I've changed within the past 2 years and improved my tastes a bit, but I'm still wary of showing off my creativity since every idea I've had so far has looked to be really stupid in retrospect, and I'm not the type of person who plays aganst the odds. I'm 23 and I've got Pokemon Diamond on pre-order, and am chomping at the bit for it....and I'll probably be getting Pokemon Battle Revolutions pretty close to launch as well. Never enjoyed the show much at all, but I adore the games. Age really has nothing to do with it.

As to the comic, I'm just not a big fan of the whole sprite comic thing. And I feel that comedy works better when character driven, even in a parody of some other story. So you might consider trying to let us get to know the characters better before jumping into the major plot arc. You're four pages in, and I don't know the names of any of the characters (except Charmander, who doesn't even have a personality as far as we know). Names wouldn't be as big a deal if the characters were larger and easier to identify with (look at Penny Arcade--Tycho and Gabe were unnamed for ages) The fact that they're tiny sprites makes it even harder to associate with them.

If you're going to stick with the sprite model, you might consider taking a page from 8-bit Theatre in terms of layout and page design. And also how to make the limited visuals still look pretty good.

Note I was mainly talking about the pokemon ANIME (which this seems more similarly styled to) and even then the focus was more on the Yugioh and DBZ aspects of it, I play the pokemon games myself every once in a while.

EDIT: I even said WATCHED pokemon.

Well, I was more talking about the fact that I wasn't funny but I thought I was... But thanks, now I'm even more ashamed. (I mean it really was more of a "Well, nothing better is on" sort of thing, but that's no excuse.)

I don't give a shit about this Pokemon while 17 thing, but these comics are horrible. Putting in a "Kill me now" punchline is basically the best way of saying you have no jokes on stock whatsoever, or simply no fucking clue about webcomics in general. Go sign your comic up at fireball20xl.com, those guys laugh their asses off if anyone simply says 'fuck' and/or gets punched, you'll fit right in there mate.

The art is good for being ripped sprites pieced and glued together in photoshop. Unfortunely good art does not make a comic.

What's not to get?
One kid is telling his pet to attack an animal, so the other kid is calling animal rights.

(I don't think it's that funny tbh, But I am no judge)
Title: Pokemon XS - Updated Weekly
Post by: CorporateGreed on April 26, 2007, 03:11:16 pm
It's really sad to see people attackin other people because they have a different
sense of taste. You can be 25, have graduated university, and still like pokemon
and Dragonball.

But I'll humor you. Yes, the humor in this comic is blatant, and it's nothing more
than some rips glued together. Sadly, 8-bit theatre is done in a similar, even worse,
graphical style, and people still think it's bloody brilliant. Don't go punching cushions
around.

To majin, even though i'm one of the few people who realise this is nothing more
than a bored man's effort to do something creative, you might want to consider
putting a little more time in what every episode is about. It is below what I think
you can actually do.

And now, stop bitching. being 18 doesn't make you a grown man. Enjoying
ridiculous series or movies doesn't make you a twelve year old. It's so sad to see
what insecurity can do to a person.

Why would samebody call animal rights for a pokemon?
It would make sense if it was a pokemon ranger but it's still stupid.

Post by: bible_basher on April 27, 2007, 04:27:10 pm
But you wouldn't call animal rights, you would call either officer Jenny (or w/e they call her in the other countries) or the pokemon rangers!
That's why I don't get it.
Title: Pokemon XS - Updated Weekly
Post by: Frankie on April 28, 2007, 03:26:03 am
The point of the joke (and the point of most other jokes so far in that comic) was to take an usual event in pokemon, but suddenly bring it to a more realistic, real-life context. The "main character" representing the fictious side of the story, the one people who play the videogames are familliar with; the more snarky main character represents an unexpected, out-of-context realistic light on each events. You could say this snarky character represents a reader of the comic which fails to have suspension of disbelief regarding the story, pointing out things that "dont make sense", even though it seems to make sense to every other character in the fictious universe.

Choosing to make the latter call animal rights was in order to make an out-of-place pop culture reference: real-life animal rights companies like peta obviously not existing in the Pokemon games or shows (or at least not in this form). Making them call officer Jenny instead of unexistant peta-like organisms would thus ruin the joke, as the whole basis of the comic's humor is to compare the pokemon fiction with reality.   :rite:

Title: Pokemon XS - Updated Weekly
Post by: Kaworu on April 28, 2007, 05:59:31 pm
Also if you kinda want to look into it... many animal rights groups actually protested against the pokemon games because they feared it would stard kids setting their pets on each other, and promoted cruelty.

Ah, well if you want more inspiration or help in that specific regard. I would suggest googling "Magical Realism" and reading a few stories you find as a result. The classic standard (at least to get a good idea of what magical realism is) is "The Very Old Man With Enormous Wings" but there are a lot to choose from.

Oh... And your word balloons are pretty good. (I guess...)

I was always too busy focusing on why electricity is extra effective aganst creatures in with flight, when it is aganst the laws of physics for objects in mid-air to naturally attract or conduct electricity (unless all electric attacks come from straight above the target, which we all know is not true of the pokemon world) to ever notice the nurse thing.

Birds can stand on powerlines for hours and not be affected in the slightest. Which is why the whole reason the weakness to lightning thing pissed me off.
Any birds dieing on powerlines is just a coincidence. I gurantee that there are just as many that die on tree branches. (well, unless they perfer standing on powelines over tree branches, the point is if the electricity caused their death, they would die the instant they touched the line. And I've seen enough birds content on powerlines that I know that isn't the case)

Now if the birds peck at the transformers on powerlines on the other hand... Well that's a different matter entirely.

btw, I think rock should have been the strongest pokemon type, because it makes no sense for water or grass to affect it. and without those two, it has no weaknesses.

that kind of makes sense, but then why wouldn't wind work (since wind erodes rocks too)? and vegetation only breaks up rocks if that rock doesn't move for 300 years. and that's a very long power nap for a geodude.

Yeah, it's all balancing issues. I mean if you start overthinking the type trumps, you'd also have to ask things like why Fire hurts the Steel type (it'd have to be REALLY hot to hurt steel. Probably in excess of 1000 degrees for extended periods) but not rock (since most clay gets brittle at 1000 or so degrees, and has a tendency to explode if it's not prepared right) or earth (temperatures hot enough to hurt steel ought to turn sand to glass), or why Ice doesn't hurt Steel.

That's right, to coincide with the tenth issue of Pokémon XS, I'm giving away one of each of the following:
- Deoxys
- Lugia
- Ho Oh
- Mew
- Mewtwo

All of them are legitimately captured, and all are holding one Master Ball
Details on this competition can be found after the comic

Competition Details

Remember, this competition is to win a legitimate legendary, holding a Master Ball!  We have a Deoxys, a Mew, a Ho Oh, a Lugia and a Mewtwo to give away - this means there will be five winners!

Before You Enter

The Pokémon will be given to the winners via the GTS.  Make sure you have WiFi and can access the GTS.  Anyone who fails to claim their Pokémon within a week automatically forfeits it.

OK, So What Do I Have To Do?

Simply go to the Pokémon XS forums (click here) (http://s7.invisionfree.com/Pokemon_XS/) and register an account.  There's a topic for the competition, all you need do is post to say you want in on the contest.

On June 5th, I will use a random number generator to select five numbers.  If one of those numbers matches your member number on the Pokémon XS forums, you win!  It's as simple as that.

Winners will be notified via PM on the Pokémon XS forums and a time to trade etc will be arranged - be sure to have a level 2 Bidoof or something to trade for your prize.

Remember!

All these Pokémon are 100% legitimate and come as they were caught (bar the Master Ball they hold).  Deoxys was caught on Birth Island, Lv30.  Mew was caught on Faraway Island, Lv30.  Lugia and Ho Oh were captured at Navel Rock, both Lv70 and Mewtwo hails from Cerulean Cave, Lv70

They're on my Fire Red and Emerald games and are waiting to be Pal Parked to my Diamond.

Rules

One entry per person!  Anyone found to be making more than one account simply to increase their chances of winning will be disqualified!

You have a week to claim your Pokémon if you win, otherwise, you forfeit it to another member who shall be chosen via the same random number generator system.

In the interest of fairness, I will choose which Pokémon you get if you win.  No complaining that you already have a Deoxys and want Mew.

My decisions regarding the competition are final and can not be argued.

Well, what are you waiting for?

Well, it's time for the tenth issue and an exciting competition!

That's right, to coincide with the tenth issue of Pokémon XS, I'm giving away one of each of the following:
- Deoxys
- Lugia
- Ho Oh
- Mew
- Mewtwo

Dude WTF are you doing in Gaming World  :domo:

I'm fairly certain the reason he did a "Tenth Issue Anneversary" is because he is running out of ideas for issues.

Hell, 10 issues of the same comic might be an actual fucking accomplishment for this guy.

Who the hell is this "we" you are referring to?

You can't possibly mean it as a pronoun because you follow it with "wanted him" in the same sentence as "make comic", which makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

Although I guess it could work if the sentence was "We in absolutely no way ever wanted him to make comics in the first place."

No we slay him for being dumb.
He obviously is letting all the fake praise go to his head and act like he's making something great by having a lame contest with pokemon and items he got from action replay.

his sense of humor resembles that of my semi-retarded friend.

Well, wanting to get Pewter Gym out of the way and progress onto the next little arc in this shabby excuse for a plot, I ended up making three more this morning.

Seriously, you've clearly seen some effort on these, but they're not really .. interesting. Not to mention funny..
They're even more boring now that you're actually going for a story.

I did have few laughs out of GWs friendly comments.
Title: Pokemon XS - Updated Weekly
Post by: Majin Sam on November 25, 2007, 07:09:02 pm
I'm hoping things get a little more interesting after this issue.  I stopped trying so hard to be funny because I felt I was trying too hard and the jokes were stiff and awkward, not to mention not overly funny, because of it.

I found that most of the ones people liked were the ones I didn't put any real thought in to, but I can't hit that mark on purpose, so I figured I'd go for a plot and slip humour in now and then.

Here's the new issue.  It'd be interesting to hear what you think.

Yes, the commander they've been fighting is none other than Brock!

Sore about being constantly beaten and mocked by rookie trainers getting their first badge, he's taken up his actual Pomemon squad and is a commander of Neo Team Rocket!

I've a feeling that this is going to tick off a lot of Brock fans.

*sigh* ...
I don't really know what to say..
I liked the earlier ones more, since they were simple and short. It worked better when it was making fun of game cliches. There's too much text to really bother now. Dunno if you're actually going somewhere with this story. Just not interesting.

Your stuff aren't really as bad as many make them seem. But, but.. I'd recommend you to work on your other work (such as that pixel@ted) which aren't sprite based, this way you can at least improve in drawing if nothing else.
Title: Pokemon XS - Updated Weekly
Post by: Majin Sam on November 25, 2007, 07:58:47 pm
Fair enough.
It's just, I felt that soon enough I was gonna run out of quick jokes like the earlier ones or that things would get to samey and thought that having an actual plot was the only way for it to really progress.

And yes, I do have the plot more or less sussed out.  I know who's in Neo Team Rocket, what they want, and why they're doing what they do.

The site's been dead a while, a friend was changing it so the pages that showed the comics were PHP rather than HTML to make it easier to post new pages - but that friend then disappeared off the face of the Earth.

Knowing my habits, I'll probably make a new site for it altogether.

Apologies for the delay in this week's update (it being a week late and all), but I've had a few things that I needed to sort out.

Welcome, and thanks for coming, before I begin, do you three have names?  It'd sure make the interview a lot easier.

We don't tend to use each other's names.  There's never been a situation that's called for it.

So, what should I call you?

The trainers, the protagonists, heck, call us Betty and Veronica if you like.

Can I be Betty?

Ahem.  So anyway, lots of people have asked, what Pokemon are in your squads?

At the moment, I have a Charmander, a Pikachu, a Rattata, and a Pidgey.

I'd rather not disclose that information in case another trainer uses it against me, though it is widely known that my main Pokemon is an Ivysaur.

Right, right, so, what's the deal with the girl?

Excuse me?

Well, unless you have a name you'd like to go by?

The female trainer will do.

OK.  So, what is the deal?

The 'deal' is that I met these two when they helped me flush Neo Team Rocket out of Mount Moon.

Seems I'm barking up the wrong tree ... So, on the topic of Neo Team Rocket, what do you know about them?

That the original Team Rocket were criminals, and these guys don't seem to be much different.

To be fair, we know practically nothing about them ...

But they definately have to be stopped!

Right ... Now, a fair few people have said that someone here has a 'thing' for our female trainer.

Could we, possibly, skip that question?

Yes, but there has been a little confusion towards your ... Preferences ... For example, there was a moment you instigated on the bridge outside Bill's house that -

NOTHING HAPPENED!  It was a joke that people took too seriously!  Nothing more!

OK ... So, what is it you two want to achieve?

I want to be a Pokemon Master, and have my name put down in the chronicles of Pokemon history!

But I thought you said you don't have a name?

Maybe, but my picture will be there!

Shall I assume the same is true for your friend?

Beats doing anything else, I mean, we seemingly don't have school or a job to worry about, so I figure I may as well keep tagging along.

Are you sure you two aren't -

POSITIVE.

Hey, am I going to be asked any more questions, or can I leave now?

Oh, actually, I do have one question for you.  Are you a good guy, or are you evil?

*Storms out with an offended look on her face*

I'm er, just gonna go see if she's OK ...

Oh.  Looks like I should probably leave too.

But I still have more questions!

And I have a friend to catch up to.

*Sighs* OK, thank you very much for this interview.  It's been a fun insight.

No problem.  Thank you again for this oppurtunity.
