Title: Music News
Post by: DS on July 02, 2007, 07:47:51 pm
This topic is really simple. I think there are a lot of interesting music news you feel like sharing but often they don't really warrant a topic on their own. I have had this feeling many times and I just found out about something extremely cool and thought of making this topic.

The news:

Quote from: 'wikipedia.org
After shows in New Zealand and Australia' date=' The Mars Volta toured a few West Coast venues as the headliner, then entered the studio to record the fourth LP entitled The Bedlam in Goliath.[6'] The album is currently being finished in New York and it is tentatively scheduled for release in late August or early September.

Can you say fuck yes??

They always work fast. Deloused was released in summer 2003, Frances was released just over a year and a half later in February 2005 (though it was planned for December 04 and I think it leaked then too), and Amputechture was summer 2006. Plus in between every album Omar's released a solo record. He usually says that when a new Mars Volta record is released, the next is often mostly or completely written anyway.

In other news (not sure how new this is to anyone except me), Animal Collective fans will be pleased to be able to watch the video for the new song Fireworks from their upcoming Strawberry Jam album can be viewed here: http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/page/forkcast/44017-animal-collective-fireworks-video  (thankyou Pitchfork ). It sounds of a similar vein to the other 2 new songs I've heard through live performances - perhaps less like a weird psychedelic folk/pop song with electronic flourishes, but more like a weird psychedelic electronic band with pop flourishes. Maybe. All 3 new songs certainly have more of a distinct groove to older Animal Collective, I think. Their sense of melody is still there though. I like it lots. And the single (not Fireworks...a song called Peacebone which is one of the new songs I've heard before) is released on August 13th, which is the day after my birthday, just in case anyone was wondering what they could get me for a late birthday present (I'm joking I actually want one of these shirts: http://www.gamingw.net/pubaccess/28248/currentpinecone.png).

And that's my hijacking of the news for today.

Oh awesome. I didn't realise they had any new albums coming.

Anyway good thread DS. triple j radio (best radio station ever) has a good music news section on its website: http://www.abc.net.au/triplej/musicnews/default.htm

This is just a quick report that I'm pleased about:
Quote
So last week on 2007 we had Nick Findlay phoning in from London to gloat about catching French electro eccentrics Daft Punk on stage at the Wireless Festival.

"It was over the top but I would have paid any money to see them again and again and again. It was really great coz they went off for their encore and the entire stage was black and then boom their robot suits lit up and the crowd just... oh, I'm speechless Richard."

This week we've been told by reliable sources to be optimistic that we'll get a visit from the duo ourselves this year. In fact there's a rumour that they've scheduled a date in Melbourne for late December.

Nick reckons during the set he saw the band also hinted there's a new album on the way. We'll confirm details asap.
So yeah if Daft Punk come here that'd be really cool. I'm also interested in any new albums they might make.

New Animal Collective leaked today by the way. You are probably going to wait but I'll get it now since I wouldn't buy it anyway and I won't be here when it's released.

This already leaked too, it's good but I prefer Wake Pig at the moment.

I don't know how many care about this but it seems like Anathema are opening for Porcupine Tree in their upcoming UK tour. There hasn't been any announcement yet but Anathema will be opening in the two announced concerts so far so I assume they'll open for all of them in UK.

This would be pretty great I'm sure!  Stupid British bands................ only playin' in England

Anyways, some interesting news:
Quote from: 'dillinger enters the studio
THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN has teamed with longtime engineer Steve Evetts at Omen Room Studios in Los Angeles' date=' California to begin tracking songs. The band will remain in L.A. through July to complete work on the record. The drum tracks were recorded at Sonikwire Studios by Gil Sharone (STOLEN BABIES, PUSCIFER). A fall release via Relapse Records is expected.[/quote']

I had assumed the new Dillinger would be released in 2008, but it looks like they've made more progess on it than I thought!

Yeah I know. It was a big HEY WHAT. But they've even played that little part of the interview a few times, and he confirms it. I think it was just going to be too much of a hassle to correct everyone, so it was left to be asked about.

The Mix-Up album by the Beastie Boys got really mixed reviews, but I think it's really fantastic! It's nothing new, they haven't strayed from the instrumentals present on Check Your Head and Ill Communication, but it's still a cool party record. Just like all their other albums. Off the Grid is a great song.

Many sites are reporting that Till will leave the band after the next studio album (such as Blabbermouth.net). They claim he is leaving due to problems in the band and would like to start a solo carrier or a new project. En Esch of KMFDM and Slick Idiot fame would replace him. I normally do not report on rumors, but this one seems to be popping up everywhere. To calm the nerves of upset fans: At the moment, there is no proof of this. I think it is safe to assume that if the official site doesn't confirm this within the next few days, it was simply made up. However, if you have any more information on this, please share.
It's just a rumor but if he did it would be after this album.

Anathema news!

Quote
anathema is planning to play alot of new material on tour with porcupine tree throughout europe in the autumn..

porcupine tree have kindly asked anathema to support them on their full european tour in the autumn.. this tour is still in the planning stage and will cover alot of territories.

anathema have decided that - rather than rushing into the studio to finish the album in time for the tour, (and not being able to work with the producer we would like) - it will actually benefit the band and the new album to play the new songs live before recording them.

so you can expect to hear songs like 'angels walk among us' 'paradigm shift' 'hindsight' 'get off, get out' 'lightning song' 'one day' 'summernight horizon' 'further' 'a simple mistake' and others on the tour with PT..

our new american manager is helping to put everything in place for us to record and release this ambitious music. he is negotiating deals in the USA and advising us on our best way to go. the response from record companies has been very positive.

we intend to record approximately 85 minutes of music for this album. at least 14 songs. the idea AT THE MOMENT is to release a double album called simply..

'paradigm shift'

again this not not confirmed, PLANS CAN CHANGE.

a double album WILL NOT mean it will be a huge, overbearing, very long album...

it may only be two groups of seven songs.. split over two CD's in order to be easily digested by the listener. it definately will not be a self indulgent album. it definately is not a 'concept album'.

themes of life, healing and unity will run through some of the songs...

the recent shows we have played this year have been great. we had some great nights, some great audiences and great laughs. thanks for everyone who helped make it happen. special thanks must go out to Derek and Alx at the agency, Mick Reed, Milly Evans, Raymond, Ian, Loz, Ozzy and Hans for making it all work.

we have loved playing. we look forward very much to introducing this intense, passionate new music to the public on tour with porcupine tree. we then look forward to recording what i personally think will be a wonderful record after the tour. it is the first album we have made that will be truly complete. it will change lives. hopefully beginning with ours.

wishing you all the best

danny.

PS: a full tour of TURKEY has been confirmed for october. dates will be online very soon..

It will be fucking awesome. I really hope PT is coming to Finland and I can't wait for Anathema's new album, it will be great. The bad news is that it might come out in 2008 because of the delay but it should be worth the wait.

Porcupine Tree release a new EP in September called "Nil Recurring". It will feature 4 tracks (just under 30 minutes of music) that were written during the Fear of a Blank Planet sessions, including the title track featuring Robert Fripp on guitar, and "Cheating the Polygraph", which was premiered on the 2006 tour, but subsequently left off the Fear of a Blank Planet album.

Full track listing is:

1. Nil Recurring (6.08)
2. Normal (7.07)
3. Cheating the Polygraph (7.06)
4. What Happens Now? (8.23)

Surround sound mixes of the new EP tracks will be included on the definitive Fear of a Blank Planet 5.1 DVDA edition. This DVDA will also include a special Fear of a Blank Planet introduction short film made by Lasse Hoile, and the video for the title track.

Both the Nil Recurring and Fear of a Blank Planet DVDA will be officially released on 25th September, but the PT Store will be taking pre-orders soon.

In fact, it sounds clearly different from FoaBP and their other material too, so I'm not sure if you'll like it or not. FoaBP is probably my favorite PT album but I'm still happy that the EP seems to sound so different because one of the main reasons I like PT is their diversity.

but I find it impossible for a band to make psychedelic music and be straight edge at the same time, the two ideas are pretty much polar opposite

Didn't Omar and Cedric (ATD-I days) write an album entirely under the influence of weed?
Title: Music News
Post by: Shepperd on October 19, 2007, 04:09:27 am
Omar writes pretty much all of the music and he is a hard working nut. He doesn't need drugs to enhance his creative force, on the contrary, drugs would probably numb him and his creative writing.
I imagine Omar having the mind structured in a way that when he channels his ideas, the eclectic/psychedelic element is a natural feature.
In the same way it would work in Zappa's mind. The guy wrote sheet music but it was all awkward and counter-cultural. But the man was no on drugs.

I'm almost positive about the the weed album. But it was early in their ATD-I career, not TMV.
I think it was when Omar was on Bass.

That is seriously a sweet music video.

In other news, Daniel Gildenlow is confirmed to be one of the vocalists for Ayreon's next project.

man, gildenglow is cool, but ayreon kinda sucks.  Like it has always struck me more as HILARIOUS than epic.

Yeah, Ayreon isn't very good. I've only heard a select few songs from them that I actually like. Gildenlow has created some truly epic masterpieces through PoS though. Too bad his music writing obviously won't carry over into Ayreon.

But yeah, Gildenlow is like the most awesome person I can think of off the top of my head! Check this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a5KTlBQzYSs
