GW Chess Tournament!

The matches

Now that people have signed up (http://www.gamingw.net/forums/index.php?topic=64760.0), it's time to start playing matches. Below is an overview table as well as a list of matches that need to be played. Just PM me or post here (preferably post here) in case you have finished a match. Make sure to mention the outcome and include a link to the match.

In case you feel lost, a basic introduction can be found in the original GW Chess Club topic (http://www.gamingw.net/forums/index.php?topic=64537.0).

Synopsis

The tournament will be played in traditional fashion: that is, everybody will play against everybody. You will play two matches per opponent, once with white and once with black. Winning, drawing and losing yield 1, ½ and 0 points, respectively (which will be shown on the chart above as +, = and -). At the end, you will have a final score and a fictional tournament rating.

We play on Little Golem (http://www.littlegolem.net/) via the usual fashion. There is one extra rule, however: you must make your move within 48 hours (except if both you and your opponent agree to a longer time period in between moves). This is to prevent the matches from dragging on endlessly. Little Golem normally allows people to idle for days, because apparently it does not matter whether you exceed the purported three-day waiting limit. In case your opponent takes longer than 48 hours, make sure to report it immediately (via PM or on IRC). The match will be ended in your favor (not on Little Golem, but we will count it as a win in this tournament).

Match list

This is an extensive list that contains all of the matches that need to be played. When you start a match with someone, make sure to request this list to be updated (preferably by posting here, or by sending me a PM). Be sure to include a link to the match. When the match is over, this list will be updated to reflect the result.

r is updating this list now. Please see his post directly below this one for the match list.

Ok, anyone who wants to start their game with me send me an invite. My nick is "_douglas." You can send both your invites for the black and white games at once, I don't really mind playing them both at the same time. Do it. Just make sure you tell me who you are in the invite or I will decline it.

My invitation name is "Jordan"

Also, I think it would be easiest if everyone invites everyone once, and make all the invitations your turn first.  That way we all have two games set up immediately and everyone has their white and black games.  Anyways, I'm sending out my invites now to everyone who gave their name.

EDIT: Also ATARI I'd appreciate it if we could start a new match for the tournament.

I've been keeping my post updated but I just finished my first match against Dreaven. I was black, he was white and I won. The link to the match is here: http://www.littlegolem.net/jsp/game/game.jsp?gid=770953

By the way, PM me your nationalities (or post here). Like in any self-respecting chess tournament, you need to know which nationality you're playing against!

I just won my second match of the tournament against ASE. Let me post the match details.

BunnyMilk: White
ASE: Black
Link: http://www.littlegolem.net/jsp/game/game.jsp?gid=766200

EDIT: also I feel a bit strange finishing two while others are still very mid game or whatever. But both of those matches were played almost in real time so that is the reason.

EDIT 2: Real time playing my third match, expect that result soon also.

EDIT 3:

BunnyMilk: White
Drevean: Black

I'll probably be leaving today and be back on Sunday, so you guys might have to wait for my move for more than 48 hours, since I'm not going to have access to the internet. Just so you know. Hopefully this is okay with you guys.

I beat my first opponent, Farah!

http://www.littlegolem.net/jsp/game/game.jsp?gid=768136

I must say, Farah could have gotten a lot more out of this match. It almost seems as if he forgot to castle, since he missed a few good opportunities to do so. It was simply impossible after a while.

Arguably, his first real mistake was 7... Ne5? (http://www.littlegolem.net/jsp/game/game.jsp?gid=768136&nmove=14), opening up the opportunity for me to take two pawns after exchanging knights. I also don't understand 13... h6 (http://www.littlegolem.net/jsp/game/game.jsp?gid=768136&nmove=26) and some of the moves leading up to it. His position was very cramped at that time, and a rather significant offense was being built at the top left side of the board. He should be preventing me from taking the initiative at all costs. 14... Be6? (http://www.littlegolem.net/jsp/game/game.jsp?gid=768136&nmove=28) is a mistake, as 15. Bc6 (http://www.littlegolem.net/jsp/game/game.jsp?gid=768136&nmove=29) forces it back immediately. 16. Nc7 (http://www.littlegolem.net/jsp/game/game.jsp?gid=768136&nmove=31) finally forces the king to move away, causing black to lose his ability to castle. 17. Bxe7 (http://www.littlegolem.net/jsp/game/game.jsp?gid=768136&nmove=33) was originally intended to force black to exchange a rook for a bishop (17... Qxe7. 18. Qxb8+), but at this point Farah decided that since he was going to lose anyway, he might as well try to experiment. He used 17... Kg8?? (http://www.littlegolem.net/jsp/game/game.jsp?gid=768136&nmove=34) instead, and lost his queen to 18. Bxd8 (http://www.littlegolem.net/jsp/game/game.jsp?gid=768136&nmove=35). To make matters worse, instead of immediately taking back with 18... Rxd8, he decided to take a bishop instead with 18... Bxc6? (http://www.littlegolem.net/jsp/game/game.jsp?gid=768136&nmove=36). The last mistakes of the match would be 21... Bf8? (http://www.littlegolem.net/jsp/game/game.jsp?gid=768136&nmove=42), losing a knight, and 22... Bg7? (http://www.littlegolem.net/jsp/game/game.jsp?gid=768136&nmove=44), losing a rook.

EDIT: I forgot I also beat Drevean before that, but I wasn't sure whether that was a tournament match. http://www.littlegolem.net/jsp/game/game.jsp?gid=767572

EDIT: I also beat _Guana. Well, I didn't really beat him yet, but he's got one last legal move before I checkmate him, so I'm posting it here anyway. http://www.littlegolem.net/jsp/game/game.jsp?gid=767563 (in case you don't see it, 31...Qh2+. 32. Kf1 (forced) ...Qf2#. 0-1) (http://gamingw.net/pubaccess/28695/misterdelhi-final.gif)

We can post about more things than just match results here, by the way!

I'm currently playing both of my games against r, and I'm royally kicking ass as usual. Actually, in my game as white (http://www.littlegolem.net/jsp/game/game.jsp?gid=772257&nmove=17), I think that I've got a better position than him. His queen is obscured, he hasn't castled yet and has less presence in the center. But we're still in the (slightly experimental since I don't know this continuation) opening phase, so I don't know!

Something interesting happened in my game as black (http://www.littlegolem.net/jsp/game/game.jsp?gid=772258&nmove=22). I took a pawn with my queen, right amidst three of his minor pieces. I made sure that he couldn't simply take my queen, but it's still sitting there now. I guess I'll have to move it away soon.

HEY ANOTHER MATCH RESULT POST

http://www.littlegolem.net/jsp/game/game.jsp?gid=770489
WINNERL: r
LOSERL: me

So sup? How are everyone's tournament games going. I feel like I'm off to an alright start considering the tournament is pretty early. I won my first 5 matches which was cool but that's not even half way there yet so I don't want to get ahead of myself. Not to mention that I seem to have played ahead of everyone so far, my two matches with Dreaven were in real time so that's the only reason why I think.

I'm really not looking forward to playing Dada, it would be cool if I could play at least one of those matches real time because I find that when I go away and leave for a day I get distracted and lose my train of thought completely. Either way...

cool.

By the way, there still are no finished matches yet for Acid, ATARI, Killface, Man-O-War, Polygon and Nessiah_Equinox. I know that ATARI, Acid and Killface are active, but what about you other guys? Since this tournament will take some time, it's okay to wait a while, but you should get started at least!

I'm currently playing my matches against r (too early to tell if anyone's winning), but if anyone wants to play me, just invite "msikma". If I might not know your invite name, make sure you add a note about it being for the GW tourney.

Something seems to be badly wrong with the Little Golem server, which I'm sure everybody who's tried to use it recently has noticed. I'm getting page generation times of around 50 seconds now, and it doesn't seem to know who I am. The news page is completely empty. Looks like the owner has some data restoring to do.

Don't be so hasty, most websites have backups. It should just be a case of a few days down and everything will be back to running smoothly. If however it doesn't I used to play chess in almost the exact same format we are playing right now on a site which I actually think is a lot better than littlegolem. I don't remember the name of the site but I'd be happy to find it, I have a relative who still plays on the site so I could get it from them.

I personally am not going to bother with another chess server for a while, because the tournament was based on the correspondence playing style of Little Golem, which makes it all much easier on us. The site owner has had some problems before. I guess he's not really an adept server administrator. Maybe he's hosting the site at his house, and he wasn't around while someone accidentally shut it off or started playing Quake 4 on it.

I'm just going to wait and see, this apparently happened before.

What's wrong with LittleGolem? It's a little slow sometimes but other than that there's nothing wrong with it, right? If you're considering dropping out, it's preferable you do it now, before you've played most of your matches, so that it's not so disturbing for the other players.

I won a relatively short game against BunnyMilk. http://www.littlegolem.net/jsp/game/game.jsp?gid=775230
Things were looking pretty even until 14... h6?? (http://www.littlegolem.net/jsp/game/game.jsp?gid=775230&nmove=28), which ignores a mate threat by White. 14... Ne7 should have been the answer. The game ended immediately afterwards with 15. Qg4+ Kh8 16. Qf5 Qxa3 17. Qh7#. That's why it's important to look at the threats on the board before you make a move.

I also won against r, mostly because he suddenly started giving away pieces for free. http://www.littlegolem.net/jsp/game/game.jsp?gid=772257
I don't know what happened but I guess he got tired of playing. Starting from move 13, I've won (for free, not while exchanging) a rook (13), a knight (15), another knight (16), a pawn (17), a bishop (18), then on move 20 I exchanged a knight for a rook. By then, r had little more than just one bishop, which was pinned to the king and so couldn't move. He even ignored the subsequent mate threat made by an attack with a rook and a knight, so the game ended pretty quickly, after only 23 moves.

I think there's not much to be learned from this game unless you didn't already know that giving away pieces for free is usually bad.

I regret to say that I must drop out of the tournament due to technical issues. The site simply does not load for me the majority of the time and thus makes it pretty impossible to play. There are only two solutions to this and both require a bit of effort on my opponents' parts that I won't make a fuss about it anyone declines. I can either play on another site, ideally in real-time so I can catch up, or start some kind of play-by-mail / pm thing which I will follow along with on my chessboard in front of my computer. Again, I'm not going to demand anyone caters to one single player, just suggest that is what COULD be done if everyone were up to it. If anyone does not want to play like that (even a single person), then I will drop out.

LG is pretty frustrating in that even after like a month of inactivity it wont kick a person out of a game. I have had a match with beasley going on since 2007-09-09 16:34 where the last move was 2007-09-17 13:11. I thought you had 3 days to make a move or you were out and it has been a LOT LONGER than 3 days. Am I just gonna have to deal with having this inactive game in my active games forever? It's pretty annoying.

My uploader didn't seem to work. http://www.johnpratt.com/items/chess/chess_recorder.html
1. d4, d5. 2. c4, dxc4. 3. e4, b5. 4. Nc3, Bd7. 5. a4, c6. 6. axb5, cxb5. 7. b3, cxb3. 8. Qxb3, a6. 9. Nxb5, Qb6. 10. Bf4, Bxb5. 11. Bxb5+, Kd8. 12. Qd5+
He gave up since I had mate in a few moves or he would lose his queen and rook and i would mate him pretty fast anyway.

I was white if you didn't notice.

I thought of something, like what if you played against a real hard computer on a different site and a gw member on littlegolem at the same time. Say you started the game against the gw member and if they were white and went first, so you went second. So whatever moves they make, you could mimmick them on the really good computer on a seperate site, whatever their response would be would also be yours against the human.

Yes, it's true that this is possible. The reason why it's not mentioned in the original topic is because it's expected that people partake in this tournament because they like to play chess. It's pretty much impossible to be able to tell that people are cheating, anyway. Maybe you could tell by the fact they can't explain why they do what they do on the chessboard, but even that's pretty dubious.

I haven't played too many games lately! But I'm taking invites! Soon, I'll just invite most people that I still need to play and get it done with.

I don't understand. The human or computer could make different moves...? Thus making this pointless?

What he means is that when the person you're playing against makes his move, you make that move against the computer game. Then you play the computer's move against him. You could also cheat by setting up the position with a chess program and then analyzing it. Either way it's pretty lame.

The computer and the human you are playing against are free to make moves. Now you see the human, when he makes his move, you use that move on the computer, the computer's response is yours on to the human. Basically you are copying the humans moves as your own so when the computer responds to it, you will know how to yourself. Example:

Human Match
Your opponent makes first move.
Computer Match
You make the first move your human opponent did, thus emulating what the he did onto the computer. The computer soon responds with a move of his own.
Human Match
Take the move the computer made and make it onto your human opponent. He responds to it. Rinse and repeat.

Seems like Guana beat me to it, but yeah that is how it all works. I would never do it, though. I have a little more honor than that.

Anyone who does that though is pretty gay. I mean it seems like so much pointless effort just to feel like you are succeeding at a friendly game between some internet buds. Not to mention, computers don't make mistakes for the most part. It would be pretty obvious if someone was doing this because they would be impenetrable. (Like Dada >:[)

Anyway it seems like such a completely pointless waste of time/effort for someone to do this. Why would they? Status? Achievement? Why join a competition purely for the purpose of having a computer top all the other players?

I am pretty sure most of the people I have played so far are not using computers as they make a lot of human mistakes, I myself have a pretty even win/lose ratio and I often give away pieces just from not paying attention really. The only person I am unsure of is Dada but for all I know he is just a REALLY GOOD CHESS PLAYER. I have however never seen him make a mistake and I don't think he has lost a game so far.

I've made plenty of mistakes so far but fortunately they were all against players who either couldn't take advantage of it or didn't even notice. Like here: http://www.littlegolem.net/jsp/game/game.jsp?gid=775188&nmove=25. If White does 13. Rxf5, I'll have to take it back with my queen. I win the exchange, but then White uses 15. Ng5! which allows him to take my rook back immediately. The queen is also suddenly in a lot of trouble. Needless to say, my position is pretty much ruined after that. Thankfully, he didn't see it and used 13. g6 instead.

Anyway, it's easy to make mistakes sometimes, but you reduce the chance of that happening by a LOT if you check out all attackers (pieces that could take another piece, regardless of circumstances or repercussions), defenders (pieces that defend another piece) and undefended pieces (pieces that, if taken, could not (immediately) be taken back) before making a move. Some chess software has a training mode for this and I suggest you try it sometime since not being able to immediately see these three types of pieces is, in my opinion, the biggest cause of mistakes.

I was not actually accusing you of cheating, I think we all know each other enough to play trustworthy games regardless of whether other people on the net like to use computers to enlarge their e-chess-penis or whatever.

Bump. It's been a while, but I've been playing matches. I still need to update the topic! I'll do so tonight.

I beat Vesper twice:

http://www.littlegolem.net/jsp/game/game.jsp?gid=789378 (with White)

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Bd6? 3. Bc4 Nf6 4. d4 Nxe4 5. dxe5 Bc5 6. Qd5 Nxf2?? 7. Qxf7# 1-0. Vesper didn't notice a mate threat early on.

http://www.littlegolem.net/jsp/game/game.jsp?gid=789376 (with Black)

1. e4 g5 2. Nf3 g4 3. Nh4 d5 4. Bd3 dxe4 5. Bxe4 Nf6 6. Bd3 Nc6 7. c4?? Qxd3 8. Qe2? Qxe2 9. Kxe2 Nd4 10. Kf1?? Nc2 0-1 white resigns. The problem here was an oddball opening (I promised Vesper I'd play it). Without a book, it's easy to make mistakes, and Vesper made quite a few, such as giving away his bishop, exchanging queens when it meant he'd lose the right to castle, and finally allowing me to attack his rook with my knight (which was the point where he resigned). Check whether your move leaves your pieces exposed before you make it.

EDIT: my second game against _Guana is by far the most interesting so far, in my opinion. We're still pretty much equal (though I have more active pieces, and Black is in a slightly cramped position). http://www.littlegolem.net/jsp/game/game.jsp?gid=788528&nmove=41 (41th ply at this time of writing)

I updated the topic and added a bunch of new results.

EDIT: I have not yet received any match results from Acid, Man-O-War, Polygon and Nessiah_Equinox. Please post your results here ASAP, because if I don't get them soon, I'll be forced to drop you from the tournament. It's taken pretty long already!

I've already addressed this in a previous post.

You were Polygon, right? I can't keep up with all those silly name changes. I'll drop you from the listing.

I only have one match going on, so it would be cool if people would invite me to some matches

My nickname is "Marcin" (or at least that is my display name)

I invited you to both our matches, ASE.

This is pissing me off!

Is it your login name or your display name that people need to challenge me? I did not receive either of your invitations, Dada. My login name is "ashorteternity," so perhaps that will work...

I guess you need the login name! I just resent both invites.

Is this tournament dead? This topic hasn't been active for a month. I beat ASE a while ago (http://www.littlegolem.net/jsp/game/game.jsp?gid=786171) though.

Apparently most people have lost interest, which is a shame.

I'll update the topic with your win later. We can probably still finish this tournament, except it's going to take a lot longer than expected.

Sorry, I kinda died.  I needed a break from this place and I'm sure some of you needed a break from me too.  littlegolem defaulted all my games so you all win.  yay!  For those of us who never set up a match to begin with, don't worry about it.  I'm dropping out of this one.  But I'll still play in the next one 5 years from now.

Send an invite to "Jordan" if you just want to play me outside of the tourny.

Good luck everyone.
