Title: I am Legend - It's Independance Day all over again!
Post by: local_dunce on October 03, 2007, 02:25:08 pm
How awesome does this look?

Quote from: 'Wikipedia
A man-made virus wipes out the population of New York City' date=' leaving Robert Neville (Will Smith) the last human survivor in the city and possibly the world. Neville lives alone for three years, attempting to contact and find other possible survivors. He is watched by the Infected, mutant victims of the plague. Neville works to find a way to create a cure using his own immune blood, but he finds himself outnumbered by the Infected and running out of time.[/quote']

It's apparently based on an old 1950's book of the same name, and I personally think this film looks pretty fantastic. Something about the apocalypse is always appeals to me.

I am Legend on Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_am_Legend_%28film%29)
I am Legend on IMDB (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0480249/)

Indpendance Day meets War of the Worlds meets Twelve Monkeys.

Now I keep meaning to head over to the IMAX Cinema down in London and watch an awesome movie, but I have just been waiting for the perfect movie to come out. Something with explosions and lots of COOL STUFF, and then I forget that I want to go to IMAX and then I remember and then I forget again.

I think this just might be the IMAX movie for me. Imax BTW (http://www.bfi.org.uk/whatson/imax/about/) So I just really hope it plays in the IMAX cinema. They seem pretty selective about what they play.

What do you guys think?

If it wasn't for the book, I'd say this was a complete ripoff of 28 Days Later, especially the deserted city scenes.  I really hate Will Smith, though.  I'm already cringing at the thought of his retarded one-liners and cocky attitude.

I can understand the reasons you think that, (Fresh Prince anyone?) But I really think Will has improved as an actor over the years. I think as an actor he is actually pretty good, Independance Day, The Persuit of Happyness, I Robot. They are all pretty good films where he gives a pretty good performance. I'm not really trying to convince you to like him here but just don't judge the whole film on the basis that you dislike a certain actor.

I never liked Leo DeCaprio after watching Titanic but he blew me away in The Departed and The Beach and I think he is pretty Stellar now.

Will Smith isn't a TERRIBLE actor, he's just slowly coming over his RARGH BIG BUFF ACTION HERO status of being loud and obnoxious.  Out of all the American action stars, I generally like him the most because he has this flamboyent attitude in front of the camera... it's like other action stars try so hard to be so badass but Smith just has this cocky "i don't give a shit" attitude that fits so well.

As far as this goes, I'm probably going to be a bit biased because I read the graphic novel (the movie is based off the comic book version but takes elements from the book as well to create something somewhat original).  The monsters are supposed to be vampires and Neville doesn't even get his dog until halfway through.

Still, I read interviews and such and they seem to be following the style closely.  The story wasn't so much literal as it was atmospheric and Neville has like... 10 lines in the entire thing and Smith himself said "well, I don't even speak for the first hour of the film so the whole thing is about the bond between me and the atmosphere" which kind of put a smile on my face because I know someone somewhere knows what they're doing.

And yeah, 28 days later is 50 years too late :D

Well, the book was totally amazing, so I'm quite hyped for this. Will Smith doesn't really strike me as the guy that would portray Neville well tho, but we'll see!

So why is Neville the only (known) survivor, or is that the kind of the mystery of the whole story?

I'd have found it more interesting if there were no mutant and he was the last man on earth. Might be boring, but I still liked Cast Away, and the idea of being all alone can be pretty terrifying.

man

of all the movies will smith has made which are maybe kind of tolerable, you picked independence day and i, robot as two of them?  those are like... pretty much flawless examples of why someone wouldn't like him, and of how little it seems like he's changed since fresh prince.  both were pretty much filled with stupid one-liners and i'm actually kind of having a hard time differentiating between his character/dialogue in either.  i, robot was just so terrible when i saw it.  i seriously wasn't expecting it to be that bad!  buuuuuut with that said, i kind of liked pursuit of happyness and ali seemed pretty okay from whatever chunk of it i saw playing on hbo or whatever, so maybe this won't be that bad.  i think i'd probably see it, if only because i'm a sucker for shit with subject matter/settings like this, regardless of how bad the actors in them are.

I actually thought that at first. It sounded a SHITLOT like Lux Aeterna, but most stuff does these days when people want to make EPIC ORCHESTRAL MUSIC. That song blows my mind and I thought that this was kind of a rip off.

Also I liked i-robot :(

This comes out tomorrow, so i'm seeing it then. Honestly I liked the trailer with him being alone better than the one with the vampire-mutant things attacking his car or whatever, so hopefully it doesn't degenerate into some kind of zombie movie thriller thing. I've got good expectations!

Also, as a (GREAT) bonus, an exclusive trailer for The Dark Knight (Batman Begins sequel anyone?) is being shown.

Has anyone seen this that has read the book?  Because the book was absolutely amazing, and I know that they strayed from the book quite a bit on purpose, to help differentiate it from The Last Man on Earth, The Omega Man, and I Am Omega...and that worries me.  So I'm just wondering how close it is to the book, and how it compares to the book.

Anyone?

By the way, about that Dark Knight trailer...is that in every theater or just a few specific ones?

I'm pretty sure it's exclusive to the movie in most theaters, like Cloverfield with Transformers.

By the by, the Dark Knight exclusive is worth the ticket alone.

The preview didn't do the movie justice. It was short and bland so if it's any indication of how the movie's gonna be...well, I just hope it isn't. Also, Heath Ledger looks like a good Joker in pictures, but seeing him in the preview was kind of disappointing. Is it just me or did he not look like this?

Seems to me like they decided to change his appearance in the movie.

Back to the topic: Just got back from I am Legend. I was satisfied with the movie. Will Smith definitely played his role well and he did a great job overall. He was good in The Pursuit of Happyness but he was much better in I am Legend. The majority of the movie, especially near the middle, was amazing. I loved the suspense and thought they handled that aspect of it really well. They did a great job showing you how he lived his life from day to day and it really made you feel sad for Neville's situation. The ending could have been better I guess, but it's not that bad to the point where it ruins the movie or makes you regret going to see it. Definitely worth the price and I recommend going to see it if you already haven't.

It was ok, but over all it was uh a WHOLE LOT OF NOTHING. There are like 2-3 plot points that actually offer any sort of progression, and ultimately you leave with this "uh nothing really happened :/" feeling. I mean it was good, well acted, but ultimately weak. I was like RELIEVED whenever a flash back came around because it actually added some plot of BACK STORY. Personally i think it was a well executed movie with a week premise/screenplay to begin with.

Well, from my understanding,       After hearing that, I was kind of disappointed in the movie, because that's a really cool take on monster mythos.

Judging the movie solely on its merits, I liked it.  Though it wasn't too good at explaining stuff, it was still pretty good at doing stuff.

I'm sorry man, but that was revealed as a fake a LONG LONG time ago.

I really really enjoyed this film, with Will Smith being the ultimate bad ass. Yeah, ending was a bit cliche, maybe even a bit rushed, but it was a quality package.

What pissed me off was watching Will Smith crawl into his car for 10 minutes.

I saw it tonight, pretty kewl movie

I know I said it looked like MGS3 and now I'm going to be a dork again and say it reminded me of Res Evil 4 because it was like scary biological monsters but the main character was badass at the same time. Plus the monsters totally reminded me of those Regenador guys along with the lab and well I'm just being a dork now

I did think the movie needed to be longer though. And I was surprised the way the movie went, I thought it would be more like he gets stuck in the city at night and he has to go through all these twisty ruins of New York to get to a safe place or survive the night or whatever. The way it turned out it was more like Night of the Living Dead or something (oh wait that movie was a classic, well I don't mean anything bad by it I just think a movie called I AM LEGEND needed a little more EPIC to it)

Finally someone else knows !

i've put up with many an idiot saying this was a ripoff of it, event though the book is of the same name then they say the book was based off the movie nad that nonscence

anyway i really enjoyed this movie, the flashbacks where quick and made you think ahead and be like "yeah so this is gonna happen"  but it only leads you to understand the main story better.

I dont care what you say, I like Will, he is a great actor since indpendance day, sure holes like hitch, and Wild wild west sucked ass but look at I.D , I-Robot and Pursuit of happyness along with this?

PRETTY DARN MILD SPOILERS:

Anyweez. I was pretty stoked to see this movie. I didn't know it was going to be a zombie deal (omg no it's a virus!!! Not zombies!!!)

I can't stand Will Smith as an actor. Regardless, I still went to see this in the cinema. I was so disappointed when I first saw the "dark seekers" and could tell they were animated. My philosophy is, if you can tell it isn't real, then don't use it. Example: In "Pan's Labyrinth" there were obviously things that don't exist in the real world... but they looked so real I couldn't tell if it was a person in a very well-done costume, or animated, or both, for certain creatures.

Anyway, people in elabourate make up a la 28 Days/Weeks Later would have worked much better imo.

I thought it was a very suspenseful movie. I was on the edge of my seat a number of times.

NOW ACTUAL SPOILERS:

Overall I was pleased. I would recommend this to a friend, relative, or lover.

And thanks to Pasty and Myke for sharing that insight, those things would have totally gone over my head otherwise. I was wondering why that one guy seemed to have a hard-on for killing Will.

completely of topic, but that picture is a fake and has NOTHING to do with the film. It is an enchanted image of the person that the original joker (as in the first joker ever that appear in comic book form) was based on. so yeah gj the internet fooled u 8)

He's not - I had a chance to meet him at the Santa Barbara film festival last year and he's actually a pretty average guy - he's cut, sure, but he doesn't have the mass that you'd think of when you say "Buff".
