Title: Hylian Odyssey
Post by: halibabica on October 27, 2007, 11:28:44 am
It's the moment you've all (Ralph) been waiting for!  These are the comics that I write about The Legend of Zelda.  They are the first ones in which I use my unique art style, and you can kind of see it evolve as the comics progress.  If you don't know what I'm talking about, refer to The Kelly Chronicles (see sig link).

However, I would like to make an important note: THESE ARE BASED OFF OF THE LEGEND OF ZELDA: OCARINA OF TIME

They're still fun to read if you haven't played the game, but you'll understand them better if you have.  Also, since the comics follow the game's plot, they will spoil it for you.  So, if you still want to play it yourself first, I recommend you hold off on reading.

Another important thing to know about these is that this story is without end.  I've written a ton of these already, and as of yet they are still not finished.  I'll try to keep up with making them so I can continue posting them, but we may hit a rut eventually.  But that won't be for a looong while.

I'm going to try to post two every other day again, but you'll have to forgive me if I miss a beat.  College life can be so cruel...

Unlike The Kelly Chronicles, Hylian Odyssey is written in pencil.  I never inked them over, so I use Photoshop's Auto-Levels function to make the scans more readable.  I've recently started writing them in pen, but that's only after 180 pencil ones.

Ah, it's the beginning of an epic...I hope you guys enjoy these!

more like "EPIC FAIL!" OOOH!

45 minutes, tops.

Anyway, while it's not quite as epic as the Kelly Chronicles, it still has its moments.  There will be times when you'll laugh, and times when you'll shout "ELI, WHAT WAS WRONG WITH YOU WHEN YOU WROTE THIS?!  AAAGH!"  Hopefully, both in good measure (I like the idea of people screaming at computers).

So it's basically a webcomic?

The idea is great. I like comic strips as long as they have on-going stories that change and progress. So it'll be great to have the story progress and change while it goes along (instead of the usual..."5 years pass and it's still trying to be funny" routine)

Well, not so much a webcomic as an ordinary comic that is presented on the web...but it does have a progressive storyline.  This way I don't have to worry about hitting a punchline every four frames.  I try not to force my humor, either.

In the early ones, I wasn't real big on "finessing."  That's why some of the art is so crappy (but isn't it crappy all the time?).

Lol, aside from the really childish art. This is actually a pretty good take on Zelda 64. Some parts are pretty funny too.

I like the dialogue.

Yeah, my comics have Da Vinci spinning in his grave.

But, seriously, there's a lot more to my art style than meets the eye.  An initial glance would suggest that it's childish, but it has changed over the years, and there's a certain amount of detail I can convey in unique ways.  These comics are the first ones I ever wrote this way, so I was still figuring out how I wanted to draw some things back then.  You can see my art evolve!

And these are almost completely reliant on dialogue.

That 'lienz cossack' thing is in the 'traitor' sense from Goldeneye 007.  When I showed this comic to my aunt in the military, she blew me away by telling me what the term really meant.  Yeah, I'm ignorant...

I was just making stuff up w/ Demon-Cricket, but it gets explained later anyway.

Enjoy!

Link was more prone to senseless violence against his friends in these older episodes.  He grows out of it eventually (don't worry, dear, it's just a phase...).

I got to make up all kinds of stuff in these two.  I would like to apologize if I offended any japanese people or nazis in the making of these comics, respectively.

Unless you knew exactly where you were going and cut every possible corner, there was no way you'd ever reach the castle before nightfall.  You would be right by the drawbridge, and it'd pull up and leave you stuck fighting Stalchildren all night.  This is what usually happened to me when playing the game.

Though this doesn't quite catch up the Fairy Files, the adventure continues after this anyway.  This is the only time there's more than two of them in a row, and they become a regular feature after this point.  Each time five new characters/monsters are introduced, you better believe Navi will tell you all about them (unless she completely forgot one, which means they'll either get covered later or not at all).

Who didn't attack the Cuccos, at least once before?

The symbol that's the title of 26 (besides being the pound sign) is the musical symbol for sharp, or as close as I can come to it on a keyboard.  Also, if you look to the right a little bit on 26, you'll see a real Lantern Ghost getting stomped.

The symbol that's the title of 27 (besides being a lower-case b) is the musical symbol for flat, or as close as I can come to it on a keyboard (just like on 26!!!).

Also, Zubat is from Pokemon, and Shy Guys are from Mario.  If you didn't know that already, then God help you in reading these.

It's the Fairy Files' pointless milestone issue!  Speaking of milestones, I remember when I did the Kelly Chronicles here.  I said this was the halfway point...right now, it's more like the 1/10th point.  Maybe.

Please disregard the piggy in the last panel.  If there were something I wanted to put there, he wouldn't need to fill that space.

I don't know why, but for some reason my depiction of the Gorons in my art style strangely reminds me of hamsters.  Weird...

For those who are familiar with the work of Jhonen Vasquez, the Filler Piggy may remind you of the Filler Bunny.  One did inspire the other, but mine is not quite so tortured or unhappy.  I use the term "quite" loosely.

If that really were a Delbiter, Link would be totally screwed.  It's the name of an abominable enemy from Phantasy Star Online.  You can see a picture of it here (http://www.schtserv.com/ep3.php?page=503).  The picture doesn't really do it justice, but its one of the most difficult common enemies in the game.

Thank you for insulting my pursuit of personal happiness.  I'm sure the things you do in your spare time would seem like an incredible waste to me, too.  However, in spite of the harsh nature of your words, there is some truth in them.  This project is the child of dead time.  It started in study hall at high school, and grew between classes at college and on breaks at work.  Production suffers the most during the summer when I spend most of my time at home.

These two comics happen at exactly the same time.  I actually counted the number of times King Zora slides over in OoT for #63.  It's been a while since then, but I think the actual number was something like 22.  I also never understood why anyone would bother to buy a fish at Zora Shop (are they just that stupid?!).

South Park had some mild influence over my comics in the old days, mostly in the form of nya and hya (thanks, Cartman).

This was one of my favorite dungeons to write so far.  Maybe it's the addition of a third character as opposed to just Link talking with Navi, but I really enjoy how this turns out.  Hopefully, you guys will, too.

Just wondering if you've noticed that approximately 5 people have replied to your topic so far. Not to be mean or anything, but that should be a sign that no one is really interested in these. They're not really good quality either, which makes them incredibly hard to read and therefore not worth it.

Right now your thread is basically post count +30 for you. I think you may've actually pulled off the longest set of posts without a post between in any thread on the forums so far, actually.

Anyway good luck with these.

Just wondering if you've noticed that approximately 5 people have replied to your topic so far.
I have noticed, and it is disappointing.  There was a time when I used to encourage people to post more, but I kinda gave up on that back in The Kelly Chronicles (http://www.gamingw.net/forums/index.php?topic=63417.0).
Not to be mean or anything, but that should be a sign that no one is really interested in these.
However, this isn't true.  There are people who regularly visit this topic to read the comics I post here.  Every time I post two more, the views go up by about 25 or so.  It's not much, but they are out there.  As for a reason why they probably don't post...there's nothing to talk about.  I'm presenting these comics for people to read them.  If I was presenting them for critique, I would expect a lot more replies.  But because of the nature of this, there's nothing for them to say.  They come, they read, they go, and my endless double-posting is only interrupted by the people who think I'm wasting my time.  Vicious cycle, don't you think?
They're not really good quality either, which makes them incredibly hard to read and therefore not worth it.
I've explained before that I'm not the most artistically inclined person.  This style is unique to myself, and while it is incredibly junky, I like to believe it holds its unique charm.
Right now your thread is basically post count +30 for you.
I'm not doing this just for the posts.  The way I see it, even if I'm only entertaining twenty-five people, putting them here is worth it.
these are really great
I really hope you aren't joking.
are you going to do every dungeon from every zelda

Don't take views as a way of judging who is actually reading these.

Okay...but you're just one case.  I would be greatly surprised to learn that all the views this thread attracts come from people who are uninterested in what I'm presenting.  No, there's no real way of knowing, but I'd rather not be pessimistic about it.

70's title is a pun of Bubble Bobble because of the Shaboms encountered in it.  The dragon from that game is drawn to the right of the date.

Sometimes ImageShack craps out, but usually broken pictures come back after a day or two.  But this is also the second time that one broke, so I just rehosted it.

Anyway, be sure to post what you think when you get all caught up.

Yeah, but it's not just the artistic style that's not very good, it's the content too. Although there must be someone out there who enjoys these, they're not so great.

Humor, like so many other things, is completely subjective.  Something I would laugh at, you might not even scoff at.  If you don't like the comics, then there's nothing I can do about it.  If you simply don't enjoy them, then don't read them.  I'm posting these here for the people who do or might like them, not the ones who don't.

I try not to include too many inside jokes in my comics.  There might be a handful, but most of them shouldn't be that hard to understand.

Not presently, no.  Like I said before, sometimes ImageShack just loses track of them or something.  If you click on one and nothing shows, then come back later and try again.  As of right now, 38 and 63 are down, but I'd bet they'll show up later without me actually doing anything.

I'm not saying they're inside jokes.  Even normal jokes can sometimes (in comics like these, they are almost ALWAYS) only funny to the people who were involved in the process of making them.  That's what I see here.  This is perfect for sharing during a class, but this isn't what is really worth putting online.

I feel kind of bad for locking this, but if you aren't even going to try to improve. I mean, you aren't attempting to rethink your art or even the humor in it. Numerous people have told you in relatively kind ways that the comic isn't going anywhere. I left this open hopefully thinking that you would begin to institute some changes and get serious about this.

As it is now, the only people coming to this topic are really here to tell you "you need to step it up" and you don't seem to want to do that, so I will have to ask you to please stop. If you take some time to reform this comic, I would not mind you posting again, but as it stands, despite how nicely you are taking it, you don't really intend to listen to anyone's advice it seems.
