Title: Robert Goulet, dead at 73
Post by: Melee Master on October 31, 2007, 01:36:51 am
This is actually pretty sad, I've always really liked him, odd as that may seem, it's a shame, but he was really pretty awesome when he was alive.

But yeah, he will definitely be missed I think. I particularly remember that one episode of Boy Meets World he was on for some reason... that's odd. Anyway... yeah.

They said he wouldn't survive without an emergency lung transplant on October 13th, and he was still waiting for one on the 30th. What the hell is an emergency? I know there are probably a lot of extra lungs needed by various people, but 17 days for a lung transplant (I mean, we need lungs to breathe!) is pretty nuts. There's got to be some solution to this (artificial organs, et cetera), because I'm sure there are huge numbers of people who die while waiting for organ transplants (sort of stating the obvious, I know).

Anyways, this sucks. The guy was a legend, and he didn't take himself too seriously which is awesome. It's a damn shame.

RIP.

We do have artificial lungs. You'll find them right next to the flying cars and the time machine. It's unfortunate, but transplanting a lung is still an incredibly difficult procedure that requires nothing less than a perfect candidate. It takes years to get one. Most people die while on the waiting list.

If you want to do something about that, become a donor.

I meant "some solution to this in the near future". I know we don't have artificial lungs now, but I imagine that with all the science we have floating around you would hear about a breakthrough in the field every now and again. I don't know what the hell I'm talking about, I just don't want people to die when they know how to avoid it, OK?

Unfortunately, the only solution to this problem we can bring up in the near future is getting more donors. Artificial organs are extremely difficult to make (and implement into the body without it being rejected) and it'll take a while longer before we are able to create one of the most complex organs of all, the lungs.

Even if there were organs available for transplant, a 73 year-old man is not going to be a likely recipient.
