Title: Guitar Hero III - Anyone rockin' out yet?
Post by: Kezay on October 31, 2007, 03:00:46 am
Yeah, the game came out on Sunday in North America, just wondering if anyone else decided to step into the third mainstream iteration of this franchise. (it would actually be four if you count the "80s PS2 game.")

I got the game for Wii myself and while it's not my first time playing GH, it is my first time owning it and the game feels tougher than GH II to me despite many impressions suggesting otherwise.  On my friend's PS2 copy of GH II, I could manage pretty well both in medium and hard but never really touched expert.  In this game, I'm finding myself struggling with many songs on medium and I haven't dabbled much in the hard mode at all.  As a result, I haven't been much up for online battles yet, though I've done a couple of co-op matches which were pretty fun to do.

I might buy Guitar Hero III eventually. It has a pretty good song list and looks pretty fun, but why should I spend $100 for just guitar when I can get 4 times that much for only $170 by buying Rock Band?

Because I kind of don't care to learn to play real guitar.  No offense of course and it's not like I have anything against it, but if I'm not out to want to do the real thing then I don't see the problem in resorting to something that actually has my interest somewhat where that is concerned.  I mean, that's as bad as those who claim to refuse to want to play games like Madden because they would rather play football in real life.  Granted, I like me some street football too, but Madden is kind of a nice diversion when you aren't part of an organized event or have a few friends to rally together for a game.

Though maybe I'm taking that comment a bit more personally than I should? :P  Yeah, I really don't care.  Tis a fun game and that's why I choose to invest spurts of time into that instead.

Yeah, forgot about Rock Band.  I'm not even sure when that comes out.  Anyway, just putting it out there for those who might have gotten GH III.

maybe because some people don't have the time or effort to learn to play a real guitar which is pretty fucking difficult and instead want to just pick up and play a cool song every now and then

granted this argument is kind of invalid for those people who learn to play the hardest song on the hardest mode without looking at the tv and holding the guitar behind their heads but still

Good lord. How does the (inane) real guitar vs. simulated guitar argument surface at least once in every discussion of this series? It's essentially the most absurd and misguided tripe that could possibly be said about a game; the simulation is inferior because of its illusionary nature and therefore it is pointless to indulge in it. I play Guitar Hero for the same reason that I play the actual guitar, for entertainment value. Not because I have some misgivings about possessing the keenest technical ability. Not because I believe that there is a certain prestige that comes with dominating all others. I do it because it's fun. When on earth did video games become about anything other than that?

*breathes* </rant> and steps off of soapbox.

Anyway, I haven't actually gotten GHIII yet because I'm currently very, very broke and I'm still not entirely dissuaded from getting Rock Band instead. I'll eventually have both of them, though the current plan is to get GHIII (which I believe has the better immediate appeal) and then purchase the drum kit and Rock Band (which I believe will have the better long term value) when the instruments are offered separately next year.

And no, we don't count the 80s game. We never, ever count the 80s.

I picked up my copy for the Wii and I agree with you Kezay, it is slightly more difficult.  The buttons on the Wiitar are a little more slick, and the timing for the notes seems a little off from the previous two.  But after a while you get used to it.

I am currently stuck on the final tier on Hard.  I've gotten Cliffs of Dover down, but the rest of them kick my ass.

Holy crap at "Through the Fire and Flames..."

I got my butt handed to me on that song on freaking medium.  There's no way I see myself completing this on Hard and Expert is just out of the question.

they aren't the same. I don't agree with people saying WELL HEH...GUESS I CAN PLAY REAL GUITAR NOW but at the same time I can see the appeal to guitar hero that isn't in playing the guitar. have you played the game? it's a bit like uh...Amplitude or whatever, less actual musicianship.

basically why play Street Fighter when you can actually fight? because they are different types of entertainment!

Through Fire and Flames is ... well NEVER TO BE FULL COMBO'd !

and i find it stupid there isnt enough $$ to buy all guitars and players...  so you HAVE to play a different difficulty (especially for achievement whores on the 360)

that being said I can't understand the appeal of doing some of these songs at five star level but I've never been a perfectionist.

like with all the effort he's putting into this THROUGH THE FIRE song he might as well just learn it on an actual guitar, get some skill at an instrument, and get the same amount of kudos if he put it on youtube.

then again it is a terrible fucking song so who knows.

yeah, naw, its because it is awesome TO YOURSELF. its a really cool feeling to master something, and really it is easier to master a song on guitar hero than a real guitar, especially if you WANT to master a song on guitar hero. the youtube kudos is just extra.

but yeah twitchers (people who are good at these twitchy kind of games) can pick up and master a new music game in a day or two. i do it with most music games. never tried guitar hero so i cant personally speak for it, but yeah the people who master music games this quickly wouldnt be able to buy, learn and master a guitar that fast.

oh okay. I've never been great at them and never figured anyone would have a predisposition to it, but come to think of it they do. and yeah I know it feels awesome but this game like JUST CAME OUT, so I had this image of some dude just training.

but yeah there are people who are just good at it come to think of it. my reflexes have been getting worse as I get older..........

I picked it up Monday for the 360. I really like the new guitar, but there are some very slight changes to the core mechanics that are barely perceptible except to GH freaks like myself. The EXTREMELY lenient HO/POs are the most obvious of these tweaks. Overall it is pretty much identical though.

I beat it on Hard and am playing through on Expert now... so I can't really form any opinions on the songs yet. They are fairly hit-and-miss though. I vastly prefer the technical songs vs ones where you just strum a lot. Off the top of my head, My Name is Jonas and Cliffs of Dover are ones I really enjoyed.

We get it 10 days before you, the only date not confirmed is the PC game w/o guitar.

Also the PC specs suck they are super fucking high.

Also I am disappointed that The Devil Went Down to Georgia isn't the Charlie Daniels Band version. :(

EDIT: Oh yeah and here is Priest (one of the best Guitar Hero players) getting 95% on TTFaF

I got this yesterday and beat hard today. Some of the song's seem harder, but fingering and timing is WAY easier this time around. Am I the only one that feels a bit less fulfilled when soloing as opposed to in 2?

Song list is quite great though. I can't wait to get all the co-op songs (sabotage unf).

Yeah Hard was pretty easy all the way til the second to last set, where it becomes shockingly more difficult. Fuck that. Same with Expert actually... it's all fun and games until you get to Japan, and then you start wanting to use your guitar controller as a deadly weapon.

And thanks, I still don't know who it is!

Oh God the further it goes on the worse it gets! They even fucked up the Devil's band bit. Really bad. Oh God, really really bad. Rofl, he doesn't even finish the devil solo. Augh AUGH WHAT DID THEY DO TO THIS SONG

i mean when you think of it as a FINAL BOSS SONG IN A GUITAR GAME it is not too bad (except the vocals), but why didnt they just make an original rather than ruin devil went down to georgia

augh so bad

Got to the 5th Teir on Hard (iirc)

Stuck on Same Old Song and Dance.  Can't get the (GY) -> B(BO)B(BO) part, and fail around 20%, though somehow I got to 56%, just don't ask me how.

Also, for fun, I played Dragonforce of Expert, in practice.  36% notes hit, 13 Note Streak

I beat, and got bored of this game, before it even came out. Because I'm a bad person.

But it was done pretty well, better than I had thought Neversoft was going to do. The HO/POs are far too easy though. Which is a good thing, though, considering how many stupid three note power chords they added.
I am quite angry at them not letting you play the Battle songs outside of Career Mode though, they were by far my favourite songs. I am also angry at the fact you NEED to play Co-Op to get songs/money. And on the subject, the Co-Op encores suck, save Cities on Flame With Rock and Roll. But they could have picked such a better Strokes song, I'm angered.
Favourite songs have to be Knights of Cydonia and Cult of Personality. Except Knights does get very repetitive and boring, but, oh well, still love Muse. The Slipknot song totally sucks, and they could have picked a much better Iron Madien song. One is good, but suffers from the problems I had with Freebird, but to a lesser extent, I guess.
Through the Fire and the Flames is fun, I suppose. Expert is darn near impossible though, my friend uses a rubber band to hold down the green fret to get through it. His excuse is if it was a real guitar he could do it, and they're making us play a keyboard part anyways.

Good game though, not as great as II though, better than Rock the 80s though. I am looking forward to the next one.

(yay go random post since I never post here)

I feel like this one is harder than the last two. I really don't see how I am ever going to beat Raining Blood on expert, and I can only get about 10% or something stupid on Cliffs of Dover. I will probably beat One and Number of the Beast eventually though.

I am really glad they added in a coop career mode. Granted once you play through it once it kind of has no more value but me and my friend just played through it last night on expert and it was a lot of fun.

I 5*ed every Career song on Expert about a week after I got it. Raining Blood was the last one I got. The only songs I don't have 5*ed are a couple bonus songs (like the last two) and Through the Fire and Flames.

I beat Through the Fire and Flames on Expert exactly a week ago. It was a pain, and I just watched that crazy video which makes me feel sad. My highest score for it is 302k I think, but that's in Pro Face-Off. My actual highest is like 278k and that was the very first time I beat it.

Guitar Hero is a really fun game and I still play it a lot, trying to get better. Also, for 360 players, the boss battle tracks are downloadable by themselves now for free. The only one I've passed on Expert is Slash's song. Tom Morello's gets crazy at the end and The Devil Went Down to Georgia is even worse, because they throw in some of the Devil's parts (like the impossible fast strumming).
