The idea for this poll popped into my head after reading a reply in the PS3 topic where someone said their PS2 recently died, and I began to wonder how often consoles do die. Have any of your consoles ever died? If so, why?
It has only happened to me once, and it was about ten years ago. Something came loose in my Game Gear, and for some reason I just never had it looked at so.. yeah, that was the end of it. I had it for four or five years before it was finished.
-
Actually, my PS2 just died pretty recently. I'm pretty sure it's something wrong with the disc drive as it doesn't seem to recognize any of my games as PS_ games.
-
Yeah, I loaned my Dreamcast to a friend, and when he returned it, it didn't work anymore. That's part of the reason I no longer loan anyone anything.
-

I had this same problem, luckily I got a new one with an extended warranty.
My Gamecube also broke once but we managed to find another for like $40.
-
Yup. 5 years after I bought it, my PS2 would boot directly to the OS instead of the game. Took it for repair and when I brought it back, it happened again, so repair again and it happened again :\
So I decided to open it and look around, after it opened, I decided to see how the disk spins inside and stuff, so I plugged in the power and lo and behold! It was working! (without the cover) So it works now and I never put the cover back on ever again.
-
Aside from my gameboy, which took a lot of abuse, none of my systems have ever stopped working
-
Never an actual console, but all my controllers for Genesis and SNES disintegrated on the inside or something, and I had to replace them recently.
-
My playstation 1 broke a long time ago, at one point I would have move the PSX upside so that I could actually play games. One must remember that sony makes fragile pieces of crap.
I doubt my psp could survive some of the things my DS has been through...
-
my NES doesn't work very well, but it could just be the cartridges.
-
Shoot. I voted once for my PS2, but I forgot about my SNES and NES. Those don't work at all anymore. :(
-
When I was 6, my father was setting up to play our Atari 2600. When he turned it on, there was a sizzle, a bang and a large puff of black smoke came from the cartridge slot........... I don't recall how old it was back then, but I do recall it was one of the original model ones.
-
Nope, never happened to me. I take good care of my consoles.
-
I take good care of my consoles.
That matters.. ?
You can treat your consoles like royalty, they'll still break down if they are faulty.
-
i live with an 8 year old brother and a 12 year old sister. mind you now its much better, but 2 years ago or so my systems would breakk. The xbox has broken 3 times (once because the power cable got fried, once because the modchip got loose, and then lastly permenantly when the modchip got completely loose while the AV cable stopped working). I have 2 gamecubes, one of them works perfectly and the other one cant read games... . My PSP's screen cracked a while ago. I sent it in to sony just waiting for it to come back.
other than that usually before it used to be console controllers breaking etc. my brother was very little and i was ignorant enough to let him play with the xbox while i was not home.
-

And? It still matters to take care of your consoles because they can break even if they aren't faulty.
-

Yeah, if you smash on it repeatedly or give it bubble baths to spoil it or something.... :fogetmmh:
I wonder if I should say I've had two die? Not really though, but my DS has been dead for over a year because someone lost the adapter for it last fall. I don't think I care about the thing enough to go pick up a new one anyway, since I didn't play it A LOT but...
-
but ds occasionally a console is faulty anyway therefore why bother taking care of any o fthem...???
ive never had a console break. my megadrive etc still even work. i got one of them cooler master things for my 360 too so hopefully that helps.
edit: uprc no, but stuff like LEAVING THEM ON THE FLOOR or LEAVING THEM ON OVERNIGHT or LEAVING THEM IN A PILE OF THEIR OWN DUST or shit all counts as "not taking care of it"
-
my NES doesn't work very well, but it could just be the cartridges.
It's more likely the 72 pin connector inside the NES than the actual games themselves. They have a tendency to go bad.
-
I've NEVER had any console die on me before these "New Generation" consoles and now I've had both my X-Box 360 and my PS3 die!
The X-Box lasted about 6 months and the PS3 only lasted 3 (receipt says I bought it August 19th).
I take excellent care of the consoles so it pisses me off...
-
edit: uprc no, but stuff like LEAVING THEM ON THE FLOOR or LEAVING THEM ON OVERNIGHT or LEAVING THEM IN A PILE OF THEIR OWN DUST or shit all counts as "not taking care of it"
Haha, on the floor. Man, that would be asking for trouble.
I've never had a problem with dust. My PS3 sits behind my monitor and gets a little dusty, but I wipe it off every few days anyway (which is more often than I play it! hmmm...)
-

Yes, but that would still count as taking good care of it, which was DS's original point.
I'm confused as to what you were refuting?
-
Man, I just said that I have never had a console break and that is because I keep good care of them. Then UPRC comes and starts some silly argument for some completely unknown reason! It's obvious taking good care of your consoles affects their lifespan.
-
My old Gamecube shitted out, but I was a retarded kid and I realized much later that I probably could have cleaned the lens and it would have worked fine! I thought the motor which spun the disc crapped out, but the reason the disc wouldn't spin was because the laser wasn't reading anything.
-
I've never had a console break. My NES got pretty bad after much use back in the day, but that's about it. I also take very good care of my shit.
-
I've had an NES die (but really what NES doesn't die?) and two PS2s die, both because of my brother's terrible modding skills (what an ass)
edit: Oh wait I guess I have more than 2 or 3 that died because my PSX also died, the video is screwed up on it and it sort of squishes all the video to one side and is all distorted. No idea what happened to it, maybe it hit something and knocked something around, but I don't remember that happening. One day I just went to play it and the display was completely ruined.
-
I dropped my old gameboys on the drive way, and the display feel out, but it didn't die until about 3 years later.
but by then I had an advance, so it was all good. No consoles have died on me. Even my NES which Is older than me still works, the cartridges need to get blown out first most of the time though (note: the cartridges say do NOT blow into them, but hell, if it gets it to work)
-
Nope! Never.
In fact my Sega Genesis which I dropped from my waist to the ground a couple times still works.
-
Only systems I've ever had break are Dreamcast (twice), and my TurboDuo. My launch PS2 is still alive and kickin' though.
-
My Dreamcast have the "reset-sickness". Other than that, nope, nothing has broken.
-
I treat my consoles/games like my sons so none of them have broken so far... once my sister left one pf my ps2 games just liying on a table(not inside a case but just there...) and I bitch slaped her! Ofcourse I got grounded but she deserved the bitch slap...speaking of which...I havent seen my psp since she left for school this morning... *loads shotgun*
-
I bitch slaped her . . . but she deserved the bitch slap...
This is not cool and if you are telling the truth I think everyone here will hate you forever.
My Xbox360 -- NOT a launch unit -- died after about 9 days. Red-rings, all that.
I have had problems with my PSX and my PS2, but in both cases they were serviceable. The PSX needed to be operated upside-down with a coin wedged in between the lid and the main body, and I was able to easily repair the PS2 by adjusting the laser and re-assembling a broken disc drive (it had broken because it was dropped so it didn't actually fail).
-
This is not cool and if you are telling the truth I think everyone here will hate you forever.
otomon is one of the most amazing members; you owe it to yourself to check out his post history.
also never had anything break but I've lost computers before.
-
My PS2 just gave out after many faithful years, and my 360 got the red ring of death (got it replaced though). Also, my gamecube broke within a week of me getting it.
-
I've had to buy 3 PS2s, 2 GCs, 2 Xboxes, and 2 360s so far, though to be fair, we all saw my 360's issue coming, and it was easily replaced.
And as much as I love PS2... I refused to buy a fourth.. because yeah, the third one broke down too.
-
my first playstation 2 stopped recognizing discs with a blue backside... so we sent it in and got a new one. not sure if that counts as dying though, but it's the closest I've had to anything dying
-
None of mine! My Virtual Boy, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS, NES, SNES, N64, Playstation, GameCube, and Wii all work perfectly and have always been that way.
-
Man, I've had some bad experiences with consoles.
The first SNES I had lasted for a long time. I had 2 older brothers at the time and they played it a lot more than me. One day though, my brother got so pissed at some game(I think it was Mario Kart), and kicked the SNES while he still had his shoes on. The bottom left part of the console just flipped up into the air. The console was still playable for a few days, but then it just died on us. Me and my other brother were so fucking pissed off.
I've also gone through 3 Playstations. The first one got stolen(we left it in the car for like 3 minutes while we were in New York and when we came back, everything was gone), and the second one also died on us. After that, we just bought the new PS1 that was out at the time, and that lasted until the PS2.
My Gamecube did a good job of staying alive. But after I left it in my closet for about a year, I think that's when it died. I bought Soul Calibur 2, and whenever I popped it in, the game would play for about 5 minutes, then I would get the Disc read error. I tried everything to fix it, but I eventually gave up and ended up buying another.
I also had a Nomad break on me. I think I dropped it or something, and the screen cracked. =/
-
PS2 (first gen, just crapped out)
PS2 (a little later on, stopped reading discs)
ps2(slim, overheated cause my cousin laid a case on top of the ps2...
and Game gear
oh and DS(screen cracked and touch screen was dead... traded it in to nintendo for free and got a new one in replace of it...)
-
One day though, my brother got so pissed at some game(I think it was Mario Kart), and kicked the SNES while he still had his shoes on.
I'll never understand why, when someone stops having fun playing a game, they continue playing, only to get angry enough to get violent and break things. :fogetshrug:
-
I voted no. I had a Gamecube once that stopped reading discs, but I bought it used and I'm pretty sure that it had problems before I got it (fuck ebay) so that doesn't count. All of my consoles have been very durable. In fact my old PS2 is pretty beat up but still works, and my SNES remains functional even though it has all kinds of crud on it and has been treated like shit for the past decade.
I'll never understand why, when someone stops having fun playing a game, they continue playing, only to get angry enough to get violent and break things. :fogetshrug:
Quitting is like admitting defeat and relinquishing your status as a MAN. If you quit, the game WINS, and it is supposed to be the other way around god damnit!

Couple of Dreamcasts broke on me, which wasn't so bad 'cause the DC was extinct at the time and it cost buttons to pick up a new one.
My first 360 broke (shock!). It was modded, so I had no choice but to buy a new one. But I'm a crafty sonuvabitch, so I bought a Core system in Argos, used some kind of special 360 opener-upper kit and swapped the shells of the broken 360 and the new 360 around. So the broken 360 was in the shell of the new 360. Threw the broken 360 in the new box and took it back to Argos. First thing the manager did was check the serial number. Then he goes "We'll give you a new 360", I told him "Naw, I'd rather buy one in a different shop. I don't trust this place anymore". So he gave me my money back.
Take note, lads!

Wow, you really are an asshat.
Thats horrible.
-
None of my consoles have ever broken. Infact even my older consoles (Atari 2600, Odyssey 300 I think, 2 Sega Genesis' + 2 32x attachments, and n64) still work with all the games.
-
Wow, you really are an asshat.

You're right. I'm sending an appology letter to all Argos employees RIGHT NOW!
-
my NES doesn't work very well, but it could just be the cartridges.
I had to hold in the reset button, unplug the video out cord, wait 30 secs, plug it back in, and let go of the reset button to get mine to play games. And repeat, if the connectors have a bad connection (which is notorious for the NES).
Atari2600 still works, though!

Your Game Gear died? Man, mine still works and it went through absolute hell.

Dude I bet you that was all psychological. There's no reason that all of that shit would make it more likely that your games would start up.
-

I don't remember arguing with anybody. :fogetshrug:
But yeah taking care of them helps but.. you don't need to pamper them or go out of your way for them. They can just sit on a shelf and be played for a few hours a day and that classifies as "taking care of it." I just wasn't really sure what you meant because taking care of a console is easier than making toast.
Okay, that is a bad comparison because if you have a shitty toaster.....
-
I was playing super mario land 2 and I was losing
I got angry
and I headbutted my gameboy's screen
This is a serious childhood trauma :(((

grindie you are not a fucking idiot
you should ask him to give you another console or something

I already had a console. I wanted my money back. If I took the new console, I would have 2. What's the point in that?

My bad, I should define what I said better, I suppose.
By "another console" I didn't mean "another 360"-more like, another type of console such as a Wii or a PS3(and you could pay extra if the refund is not enough in the case of the PS3)
That's just me though!
-
yes thats an excuse to call him a fucking idiot
-
I had my PS1 die before, and I was Playstationless for at least 3 in a half months which drove me crazy because I wanted to play my PS1 games again, then I finally got my PS2, and started playing em' again. :D And a few years after that, my first PS2 got old and broke on me, which was the worse timing ever because I wanted to play Wild Arms: Alter Code F so fuckin' bad and I had to wait a couple of months, til I got a job and started makin' my own money, then I bought me those tiny PS2's and finally got to play Alter Code.
The reason my PS1 died was because I kept playing burnt games, and an NES emulator on it, so yeah, that was my fault there. XD
I hate it when a console breaks, especially when there is a game I really want to play, my PS2 right now is a lil' bit on the fritz, it won't play the ending to Tales of the Abyss, which really sucks because I want to start New Game ++ on there...
-
yes thats an excuse to call him a fucking idiot
fixed

No wait. That IS a good idea! But first, tell me how to play my 360 games on a Wii.
-
Dude I bet you that was all psychological. There's no reason that all of that shit would make it more likely that your games would start up.
No, it was the only way any game would start up. You can come over and try it if you like.
-

Don't!
Buy Wii games!(or p*rate them)
-
my xbox had the three red lights. i bought it secondhand off of ebay and microsoft was still nice enough to replace it.
-
My PS2 died a few months ago, after opening it and a spot of fiddling I managed to resurrect it. However, this was not without a price, my fan no longer works and I have to cool it down using an external fan otherwise it overheats and just doesn't work.
-

this is a horribly dishonest thing to do. I would never have done something like that, and if I had, I would have returned it about five minutes later because I have a moral compass.
regardless, you seem to have expressed some pleasure and moral high stance on your ability to con corporations as if you were some counterculturalist hero so my words will fall on deaf ears in your case, but hopefully no one else will percieve you as such.
-
Recently my N64 died. Me and my brother were setting up for some classic Smash Bros. action and it just didn't turn on.
I have a SNES in my attic, but if I found some cords and stuff it would probably work.
-
I also bought a SNES game second hand for $1, my friend apparently spilled an entire bottle of cologne into the bottom of the cartridge.
I works fine, but everytime I play it my room smells like some Guido (http://youtube.com/watch?v=4JMOh-cul6M) just got ready for a date in my room. Which sucked cause the game was really fun (Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past)
-
No, it was the only way any game would start up. You can come over and try it if you like.
I would but you'd kick me out for taking craps that are too long. :fogetnah:
-
surprisingly, none of my catrige systems broke on me, but maybe it was because most of the time it was the cd drive in my later consoles that did (ps2, dreamcast, xbox)
-
I would but you'd kick me out for taking craps that are too long.
True. We only have one washroom.
Do the Xbox 360 Elites have the same Red RIng of Death issues as the earlier versions?
-

Red Ring issues are pretty much fixed now with all new 360 models.
they still happen but it's not very common unless you play for like, 15 hours in a row.
and if you do that then you kinda deserve whatever the fuck happens to your console.
-
I haven't. I've only ever owned 3 consoles in my lifetime. (Sega Genesis, and the PS1 and PS2). I haven't had any problems with any of the consoles I've had. They all still work perfectly fine as from the day I got them (the Genesis and the PS1 were used too)
-
My PS2 broke after five uses.
-
My playstation 1 broke a long time ago, at one point I would have move the PSX upside so that I could actually play games. One must remember that sony makes fragile pieces of crap.
I doubt my psp could survive some of the things my DS has been through...
The playstation one (and two) were fragile but my psp has been through hell and is still fully functional, in one piece and doesn't have a scratch on it.
-
I've not had a single console break or otherwise stop working. This includes the fragile PSP. I don't see how they can break so easily, actually, since all you need to do to keep them alive is not frantically punch them when you're losing.
-
One of the chips inside my NES burned or something and it didn't work anymore. One time I tried and tried and tried (power on/off repeatedly) and it worked but the controllers were so fucked up that I couldn't do shit. So I turned it off again and it doesn't work anymore. Can it be repaired?
-
2 PS2s died, one from old age, the second from trying to fix it.
2 PSPs died. One got bricked and I took it apart for some reason that I don't remember, and the second died from Windex spilling onto it.
I also had a PS1 break on me, but I don't really consider it dead, since it just needs a new spindle to hold the CD, but the spindle is worth as much as a used PSX, and I have my PSP to play PSX games anyways, so I never bothered to fix it.
-
Well not really, but I remeber my PlayStation 2 wouldn't read any games unless I turned it sideways, so I just bought a new one.
-

That's what my PSX is like. I either have to turn it upside down or sideways for it to read some of my games (actually a lot of my games).
-

my first PS2 broke when my brother tripped over the cords to answer the door, and my dreamcast and xbox just stopped reading CDs. I didn't drop them or run any sort of mods on them. They just started to take 5-10 tries per cd to get them to work, and performance was iffy even when they did. Cleaning the laser didn't fix them so I just traded them in since technically they were still working.
I think my most satisfied case of repair/replacement was from sony, I sent them the ps2, they sent one back plus a controller, power plug, and av cable (basically new console in retail box).
EDIT actually, i never had a DC break, that one was stolen, it was a second xbox that died on me.
-
Only my 360.
The first time was after an update to play the original Forza, and recently, it just died, so I've got to send it back for fixing again.
My PSX almost died when someone dropped a half empty can of beer into the bag it was in, but it dried off and still worked (though it did smell a bit).
I've never had any problems with any Sony consoles (well, unless you count the PSP sucking), which is surprising as I treat my other consoles like gods, but my PS2 is near the floor and covered in crap, but it just doesn't get the hint that I want it to die.
-
I have some sort of problem with ALL my consoles. Each one has issues in their own, special way. The only two I've ever had outright die were my NES and PS2.
My NES, being the shoddy piece of workmanship it was, broke after being stepped on. No, it wasn't me that did it. My daft cousin was in my room unsupervised, somehow knocked the system off the table, along with some papers, and stepped on it. Accidently according to him. I don't know if it was or not, but I know I'm not letting anyone under fourteen in my room if I'm not there ever again if I can help it.
My PS2 just sort of died slowly. First it started not reading PSX discs, the stopped reading them altogher. I cleaned it out, but that didn't work. I set it in my closet for a couple months, tried again out of boredom, and it worked. For about three months. Then it died again. It didn't even try to read the discs after that... it wouldn't even power up. Now it sits in my closet, dead.
-
My first NES... I think I was about 8 at the time. *tears up, snivels and then sobs violently*
-
My Dreamcast has resetomania (Looks like i'm not the only one), my both PSX are traded away and my PS2 sadly died. And the worst thing it got repaired. Worked for 2 weeks until breaking down again
-
I had a PS1 and it died after I owned it for about 2 month's, I had played Final Fantasy 8 about 50 hours worth when it died. I got so pissed I through it on the ground, and then about 2 weeks later managed to sell it in a garage sell. That's the story behind why I am such a xbox nerd, every since that I have never bought a Sony product since(not just that, two of my friends had Sony products that crapped out also. One was a PS2, and the other just bought a PS3 and the blu-ray player sucks on it which for $600 I would expect that to work..). Other than Sony, I have never had a console or for that matter even a game or controller/memory card mess up. I have owned the following; Gameboy, NES, Sega, N64, Xbox, Xbox360, Wii, and of course the PS1.
