I wanna request some good psychedelic music. I'd like anything from any era. I like Pink Floyd and Animal Collective. I also like the Mars Volta. I don't really like Jimi Hendrix or the Doors' style of pschedelica though.
I've heard something about the band Kwisp, The Soft Machine, and the album Electric Music for the Mind and Body by Country Joe and the Fish. Are they good?
-
You might like Dungen. They are from Sweden though so sing in Swedish.
-
Jefferson airplane.
White rabbit is pretty psychedelic.

any post rock band will do the trick
and I know you already like King Crimson
-
Francis Guini latest release Future Science Vs Man
also
Olivia Tremor Control
Beach Boys' Pet Sounds
Brian Wilson's SMiLE
13th Floor Elevators
Acid Mothers Temple
to name a few
-
wash: by post rock you mean things like Battles, Tortoise, Pineapple Thief, etc?

Beach Boys' Pet Sounds
Brian Wilson's SMiLE
13th Floor Elevators
Acid Mothers Temple
to name a few
and which AMT albums specifically, I already have a bunch by them.
-
Acid Mothers Temple - New Geocentric World of Acid Mothers Temple
Acid Mothers Temple - Ivan piskov's wild gals a go go
This one has one of the most trippy dance tracks, Sweet Juicy Lucy
-
Chemical Brothers are the shit
And yes they have elements of rock at times (Setting Sun and The Test are good examples I guess)

I dont know Battles or Pineapple Thief, but I find the most psychedelic post rock bands to definitely be some of the more popular ones like GY!BE and Explosions in the Sky (but also stuff like the Ascent of Everest can get psychedelic at times, especially in the song Molotov)
-
The Flaming Lips. Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots is one of their more famous albums/songs, but Soft Bulletin is also really good.
They're getting more mainstream now, though. =\

Mammatus, Earthless and Flower Travellin' Band are all really great psychedelic rock bands. Causa Sui is pretty decent. In fact, there are a lot of good psychedelic rock bands in general, but these are the ones that have really stood out to me! Earthless and Mammatus are more of like experimental jam bands with really long songs, where as Flower Travellin' Band has more normal songs. Causa Sui is kind of stoner-rockish. Also, in the same stream as AMT, I have a japanese noise rock album (Afrirampo - s/t) which I like, but calling psychedelic might be a little bit of a stretch.

what he said!
also: bardo pond
psychedelic AND probably the best music you'll ever hear of any variety

These guys are really good. Try some more IDM artists as well: Fennesz is pretty out there, Autechre are awesome, Boards of Canada are another goodun (check this out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A2zKARkpDW4). If you're not strictly looking for rock and more just really atmospheric music try this stuff out.
-
Nobody else absolutely hates Boards of Canada like I do
I mean at first I think it's ok but anytime I listen to it I have horrible vivid nightmares and thoughts and I really think there are subliminal messages in there
-
Kasabians 'Empire' is your best bet. =)

BoC have openly admitted that they are fascinated by subliminal messagine and they experiment with it constantly. All of their albums are jam packed with it apparently.
-
Don't they have a cult or something too
-
Boris, especially the first track "Farewell" on their Pink release. I can never get enough of that song.
-
Caribou has a few good songs, which could definitely be considered psychedelic.
-
Shpongle / Ott / Younger Brother / Hallucinogen / Celtic Cross / Prometheus
All of those are from the Twisted Records (http://www.twisted.co.uk/) crew. Most of the above mentioned are projects of Simon Posford or related acts, they are all extremely good psychedelic trance or ambient.
Astral Projection / Yahel / Infected Mushroom / Nystagmus / Safi Connection
These are more in line with your average, more trance-influenced psychedelic or goa trance. So they are more based on being upbeat and dance-y.
Ozric Tentacles / 1200 Micrograms
More rock-influenced as opposed to dance-influenced. Both of these bands make use of guitars or guitar samples.
-
comets on fire - blue cathedral
really great album, their newest release isn't so psychedelic, but still good.
-
check out Dead Meadow.. more on the psychedelic jam side.
Growing, Lamp Of The Universe, Sianspheric, Bardo Pond (deserve a second mention), Tristeza..
all pretty different in style but psychedelic is a broad fucking term.
-
Isn't everything good while you're trippin really or do you guys actually have STANDARDS
I'll say THEME SONG TO TAXI because there couldn't possibly be anything psychedelic about that song it's too good and pure and wholesome
-
I was going to say The Doors until I read further on... Damn.

i love dead meadow but a lot of their stuff can get pretty boring if i'm not stoned
i will have to check out these other bands though! dead meadow + bardo pond + electric wizard avatar = you have better musical taste than like anyone here congratulations acid-food.

So I just downloaded some Pink Fairies the other day, and they are pretty great too! Along that same line, Sir Lord Baltimore is pretty good too. They are both more bluesy traditional type rock, but still really good.
Also, I just was thinking Masfel is fairly psychedelic. They are like jazzy/funky instrumental stuff, probably less psychedelic than other stuff, but I don't know how wide your range is! I figured I'd mention them cause I think they are pretty cool.
-

Actually it turns out all 60s psychedelia, like Jefferson Airplane. It seems to me that psychedelia is a way to make songs that don't have rhythm or good melody. Some songs are good but most are dumbed down rock, at least from this style.
Tho the rest of the stuff is pretty good, the jams and the trance/dance was cool. Is there any more music that sounds kinda like mars volta or other neo-psych?

i wonder if this is why i find boc physically nauseating, even though i do generally enjoy their sound

uh man, there are plenty of awful psychedelic bands that exist for this reason alone. untalented people faking it with SOARING GUITAR TEXTURES AND FEEDBACK or whatever else. every time you talk about a band you seem to mention how WEIRD or TRIPPY they are so i think you'd know. psychedelia (along with noise rock, shoegaze, drone, ambient, post-rock, etc) is 99% boring, gimmicky shit, since it's easier to fake that than pop songs.
also Quest Master said boris, but i don't think they're very psychedelic with the exception of that one song "farewell," and maybe some of their earlier drone stuff. the rest is terribly caustic, grating (also awesome) rock music.
also dudes listen to bardo pond seriously they are better than anything

oh man i thought i was just getting unlucky with my choice of bands then. but if this is true then shit man...probably the best psychedelia from the 60s/70s might be Pink Floyd then.
I like noise rock, drone, and post-rock though...ahahahahaha
and yeah shut up i'm dissapointed too.
-
uh, i'm not saying any of the bands people mentioned are bad, or that PSYCHEDELIC MUSIC SPECIFICALLY is, i'm saying anything that doesn't rely (primarily anyway) on rhythm and melody - like most of the genres i mentioned, valuing sound, texture, timbre, etc. over traditional songwriting elements - is going to be easier to do a half-assed job with and still render it listenable. pop music for example is not as much subject to this, as if you write a bad song it will be readily apparent and nobody will think it is good for a minute. meanwhile, you can sneak in a few minutes of feedback into your song if you are DRONE / AMBIENT / CHILLOUT and nobody will notice.
i was agreeing with you that there is a lot of bad music, but not just psych in particular.
also yo pink floyd is boring shit, and the doors and ESPECIALLY hendrix are you know... exactly like those normal songs you like (with rhythm)(with melody)
i am not saying you should or should not like any of these bands, i simply do not understand your criticism. unless that was directed at other bands?
-
bort, what is to fake music
-

Sunn O))) managed to sneak like 20 continuous minutes of it in bassAliens.

my criticism was that the psych i've heard from the 60s (like jefferson airplane) seem to sacrifice the quality of their songs for "spaciness" and weird stuff. but that's just me. as for doors and hendrix...the doors aren't bad, but they're not psych-y enough for me. i just can't find a happy medium it seems.
and why is PF boring?
-
...old Porcupine Tree...
I can't believe I'm the first person on a gaming world topic to mention them.
-

Jefferson Airplane varies a lot in quality. Even their best cd (Surreal Pillow) only shines during the few top songs (Somebody to Love & White Rabbit). Imo, a lot of Jefferson Airplane is generic :(
Pink Floyd also varies a lot in quality, but they have some rock-solid albums (Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here and Animals) as well as other very solid songs (Echoes) so they are imo the best psychedellic rock band.
A lot of PF pre-dark side (well, Meddle is a pretty good album but kinda inconsistent) and post-animals (sorry, The Wall is imo kinda average... but it has its moments as well) is generic and boring imo. Their first album is pretty cool though.
-
No I agree that a lot of it's just a reason for EFFECTS over actual musical stuff
I should post the time I made a 10 minute song out of "Do a barrel roll" being repeated and timestretched over and over

ok when I get home then

The first two minutes or so are pretty boring but it's fairly interesting after that
-
Love - Forever Changes is pretty much the best Psychedelic album ever.

Anything by Juno Reactor.
