Title: Good Ship Shooters?
Post by: AdderallApocalypse on November 09, 2007, 01:20:34 am
Recently I have taken in interest in space type shooters such as Ikaruga and Intercept. I haven't actually PLAYED Ikaruga, but it is just an example. So GW, can you recommend me some good shooters such as these. I prefer sci fi types, and the game being difficult is good too. Above all, the most important thing is if it is fun, so yeah, recommend away!

Tyrian 2000 and Radiant Silvergun, although I've only heard that RS is good; I've only played it for a few minutes. Tyrian 2000 is really great though, and it's abandonware as well.

ABA Games (http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~cs8k-cyu/index_e.html) (in particular Parsec47 (http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~cs8k-cyu/windows/p47_e.html), rRootage (http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~cs8k-cyu/windows/rr_e.html), Gunroar (http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~cs8k-cyu/windows/gr_e.html)) Cho Ren Sha 68k (http://www2.tky.3web.ne.jp/~yosshin/my_works/index.html) (this one is amazing) Warning Forever (http://www18.big.or.jp/~hikoza/Prod/)
Plus some MAME ones: DoDonPachi Mars Matrix Giga Wing Guwange ESP Ra. De. Practically anything else by Cave.
Also there's the Shoot The Core PC Database (http://shootthecore.moonpod.com/database.php) which should help you find tons more good ones.
If you have an XBox 360, buy Geometry Wars.
And if you own a Dreamcast or Gamecube (or Wii) then you should really buy Ikaruga.
Gradius V for the PS2 is also pretty damn awesome, way better than the others in the series.

Rainbow wars is also free and very similar - it's pretty much a Game Maker version of Geometry Wars.
I also recommend Escape Velocity and all of it's succesors - especially EV Nova. The trial is free. It's distributed by Ambrosia Software - same guys who distribute DEFCON, Uplink and Darwin.

A shooter involving ships as opposed to floating baby heads or ape penises or whatever Japan likes to use instead of good old fashioned space ships.

It probably goes without saying, but no one seems to have mentioned it yet: pretty much everything by Treasure is a good SHMUP. Though some of them aren't "ship shooters." Like how Gunstar Heroes and Astroboy Omega Factor are more like crosses between Shoot 'em Up and Beat 'em Up, and Sin and Punishment is a Rails Shooter.. Ikaruga and Radiant Silvergun are games by them, so you've already seen those mentioned.

The Touhou series of games from Team Shanghai Alice are also fun, and free! May be a bit hardcore for most though...
