Title: www.freerice.com
Post by: GirlBones on November 09, 2007, 07:09:58 am
Okay, I am fully aware that members aren't allowed to post topics on other websites, especially not in general, but I'm going to go ahead and call out this one as an exception. It's one of the best sites I've ever visited.

Free Rice is essentially two sites in one: a quiz site and a charity site. The main interface of the site is a difficult vocabulary quiz where they give you a word and four choices as to what it means. They start out with some questions of varying difficulty to assign you a "level" from one to fifty, iirc. Each three questions you answer correctly moves you up one level, and each incorrect answer demotes you one. It's really simple and fun, and you learn a lot of new words. I usually start around level 40 and drop down to about 38 or 39. I've never been higher than level 44.

Now here's the good part. After each question, the page refreshes with another question. There are ads on the bottom of the page, so every time you answer a question, the site receives ad revenue which it uses to purchase 10 grains of rice to donate to the world food bank. I've won almost 4,000 grains in the last two days. It may not seem like much, but the more people who play the game, the more rice gets donated. More than 75 million grains were won yesterday, and overall almost a billion has been won.

Basically, this site is a GREAT way to spend a few extra minutes. You get to have fun, learn, and help out just a little for ten minutes every day.

Props to ASofterWorld for bringing this to my attention.

EDIT: doktormartini i see you viewing this topic go win some rice

I'm done for now, I got up to 2000 with a vocab level of 35.  I tend to recognize a lot of words in the 26-30 range--that is to say if it automatically adjusts the vocabulary based on your current level.

The real question is how long will it be until someone writes a program to go to this site and continually select the first option so that they can make a bunch of money and donate a bunch of rice.

There's probably a cap for any given amount of rice you can be rewarded in a day.

That or some other way to prevent bots. I assume whatever ads are on the page are unaffiliated with this site? I hear those e-ad services monitor their clicks/views pretty closely and stop doing business with anyone they deem to be cheating.

Anyways this is a damn good idea! To think that someone could draw something good from internet advertisements. (Let's just hope they don't start bringing in popups because no amount of charity can justify their evil.)

I got up to 1000. A little pile appears on the left of the bowl, so it looks like you can go up to 10000. Fuck that.

I also got up to level 35. I didn't know half the words, but a lot of them are obvious if you read all the answers. Baronial meaning stately (baron) and panoptical meaning view-all (optics) etc.

Donating money requires money. I'm a poor student, I can barely afford food right now. However, spending time playing some internet word quiz? I mean, come on. This is a great concept.

edit: Also this is pretty hard for someone that has English as a 2nd language (well at least for me) :(

If they could somehow integrate this into World of Warcraft it would be like the ultimate

Or Japan could make a new Dragon Quest game where it's 500 hours long but you fight HUNGER SLIMES and they drop rice

Also is this white rice or brown rice because white rice is missing vital nutrients

But yeah I like these "Lots of people doing a little and it amounts to a lot" sort of things. Of course we could just tax the super rich 2% more and donate that ;P

Giving rice is not an expensive process and I'm pretty sure you could spare what, 5 to 10 euros per month? This is not really a new concept either and I'm pretty sure a direct contribution would generate more rice than a session on this site does.

I wonder, how do they count the rice grains when they're giving them? Do they count them one by one?

Plus donating to the poor does not help them, it prevents their economies from developing instead.

Why you gotta be like that, man? I'm sure most people donate small amounts to charity regularly ($5-10/month) so this is a simple and easy way to donate a little more.

Hell, even if it's a scam, I like words. Level 41 before I got sick of it, and lots of rice. And if it's for real, well, good for the people who get the rice, right? I see no downside.

I got up to 3000 grains of rice (which is at least a couple bowls full). I am a level 41 grammar wizard!

My only problem is that 10 grains seems a bit small (per donation). I mean, surely this site is getting a lot more ad revenue from the huge names that advertise here; ten grains of rice costs like 1 cent. If they were donating 50/100 grains of rice per question I'd be a lot more impressed, because some of the words were pretty impossible and they still made money off of it. They could probably easily afford to make 100 grain donations per right answer and still pay for a high-volume server. The number would go from 1 billion to 100 billion! :0 I don't recall reading "not-for-profit" anywhere on the site though, so they are probably raking in huge dough.

It's pretty gay saying donation is a good alternative to doing charity work, for someone who has way too much spare time, because it would be too time-consuming otherwise. See where this is going? Seriously man, hammering at this because donating money is better is über-gay. This is a good cause and even if you feel holier-than-thou because you donate or whatever doesn't mean you should be so assholish as to throatfuck anyone here who decides to spend ten minutes with this and get a good conscience from doing so. And yeah, ten euro a month actually would pretty much fuck up my economy. Well I guess I could eat cheaper food or decide not to have internet, but since I'm not going to do so, and since my current way of living pretty much takes up all the money I get, then I suppose I should be able to use this site for a few minutes without feeling like a cheap fuck for not donating.

Charity work would be spending some of that spare time on real volunteer work, or drinking ONE LESS BEER per month in order to cover the cost of a montly donation (which is pretty much all it would take but apparently that is too big of a sacrifice for a student in one of the top five richest countries in the world).

And uh, I wouldn't call myself smug at all. I don't care if you're donating or not, but I do care that you're using a shitty excuse in order to avoid admitting that you don't care enough to make a minor sacrifice.

I was making a point. Rice is cheap, the ad revenues from the sponsors should be able to buy WAY more rice than they are donating. It is still cool, but that doesn't mean they aren't laughing in their giant money vaults a la Scrooge McDuck.

Stop fagging this thread up, Drule.

Quote
Tried this before and got bored after 40 grains. Just donate some money instead.

...and stop looking at this site as a sole method of donating, the rice is just an added bonus for getting the right answer.  It's really more of a device to test your vocabulary and learn at the same time--and you can't do that with donating, so stop comparing the two.

We all know it's not a replacement for real donations and no one is saying it is, however, not everyone wants to donate 15 euros/dollars a month...or in Lars' case, afford doing it.

And I do understand what you're telling Lars--you're just coming off as a huge cock in the process.

shaddup.

I've been playing this for a while now, and I want to find out where exactly the money goes to, how much is made, and how much is spent on rice.

Also, measuring rice in grains doesn't really put the amount into concrete perspective.

Because they need something to draw in people which can then generate revenue for their sponsors. The sponsors donate the rice by giving away part of their revenue.

Hm, that makes sense, nevermind then.

It doesn't actually make that much sense. I seriously doubt that they are only making 3.3 cents for each adview from the companies they have sponsoring them (which are all huge names), so even IF (they don't, but IF!) the grains of rice cost a penny each then there is a lot of money that is going into the webmaster's pocket.

I brought this up before because I think it is pretty important. The companies are probably sponsoring the site to seem charitable, but there is probably a huge amount of graft. I like the idea of things being given to poor people, but I don't like that there is a very good chance that some fatcat is probably laughing all the way to the eBank. Seriously, did anyone read their FAQ? It's so full of guilt trips and shit "It's FREE RICE you want to give FREE RICE to STARVING kids in a THIRD WORLD to save their LIVES RIGHT?! You're not some RICH GUY who doesn't want to HELP STARVING KIDS?" that there just has to be more than meets the eye here. I mean, those ads to sponsor children in 3rd world countries are full of guilt trips and stuff, so you might expect it; but this site isn't trying to get our money or anything so I would expect them to be a bit more subtle in their explanation of the site's goals.

I don't know, it's fun and it probably does help, but I still can't see how there isn't 100x as much food being generated by the huge number of pageviews they must get.

Break them down? "Ambulance" comes from "to ambulate", which simply means walking or moving from one place to another. Flavus per domum ambulat.

Ambu > moving, as in ambulatory

Yes, I know that dada. I was pointing out that it is interesting to see what words come from the same root word (in this case, ambulate). In this case, it was a joke because it is such a simple word, you see?

Geez, captain bringdown over here.

His sponsors would figure out that it is and cancel their support.

Then make it highly susceptible in a stealthy way

When I was in sixth grade (11 years old), my teacher never ever did vocabulary lessons. Instead, she made our class learn greek roots. Every week, we'd have a list of about 50 different suffixes, prefixes etc... to learn. The next year, our new teacher did latin roots. It's because of this that I have a large oral vocabulary.

this really helps me realize how privileged we are.  a half-hour of FUN WORD GAMES and GETTING ADVERTISED TO equals a meal for some kid who couldn't receive one otherwise.  of course, a half hour of real labor would probably equal at least a pound or two of good eatins

Effectiveness

One month after the inception of the viral marketing program, users had earned enough points for one billion grains of rice. The United Nation's World Food Programme stated that this amount could feed 50,000 people for one day.[3] Thus, approximately 20,000 grains of rice provide enough caloric intake to sustain an adult for one day. Using this calculation, enough rice is donated to feed 7,019.15 people daily per the totals for December 28, 2007.

Thought people might be curious

Still you'd probably do better giving stuff to the food pantry, you could feed someone for like a week with stuff lying around the house even

Also it's 20 grains of rice a word now - wasn't it 10 before?

kewl beans (I mean rice lolol)

but that's pretty great, if you just did 1000 of those a day you could support another human being without having to pay any money

Since this thread was posted, I have been visiting the site frequently from time to time spending at least 30 mins.  It's a good way to "kill time" while in the meanwhile doing something good and exercising  your mind.
