Hello GWers. RyanThunder here.
This is bad. As far as I can tell, it looks to be a dry holiday season for the Wii. I usually ask for at least two console games for Christmas: an action-oriented game (i.e. platformers, racing, shoot-em-up,etc.), and an adventure-oriented game (i.e. RPG, Zelda-type gameplay, etc.). I've filled the void for a lengthy adventure game (Super Mario Galaxy), but I can't find anything for my action fix.
I've had my eye on "Dragon Blade: Wrath of Fire" and "Red Steel," but both of these games have done poorly among critics, which leaves me speculative.
Have any of you guys played those games? Would you recommend them? Or would you recommend another action-type game (i.e. platformers, racing, shoot-em-up,etc.) for the Wii?
Which reminds me, I also need a good action-fix for my DS as well. Any recommendations there?
Oh, and to keep this topic alive, what Wii game are you asking for Christmas this year?
-
Hello RyanThunder, great to see you. :fogetcool:
Yes, I'd like to know what games Wii actually got/coming too..
It looks like Wii is in the same pit as GameCube, with only worthy titles being Nintendo ones.
However I heard Metroid Prime 3 is a pretty solid entry, so there's your action fix.
As for DS, I just got Castlevania: Portrait of ruin (or something ~along), very good game indeed. If you haven't got it already.
-
Red Steel? Not really, with much better first person oriented games out there like Metroid Prime and Medal of Honor Heroes 2 (next week). Dragon Blade is decent, but very bare bones. It has decent gameplay mechanics, especially later on when you get better powers and range in firepower, but the environments are bland, puzzles are extremely simple and it's VERY linear. If you're really looking for an action game of that type, wait until Rygar for Wii releases. It's essentially an upgraded port of the PS2 game, but if you've never played it then the Wii version might not be a bad way to go. Or wait until Soul Calibur Legends comes in a couple of weeks which is looking to be better than either of those games and isn't a port of any sort.
Anyway, I don't exactly get gifts anymore and when my mom urges me to at least pick something I just ask for financial help for school. I tend to buy my own games now and this is my lineup for the rest of the year.
Super Mario Galaxy
Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles
Medal of Honor: Heroes 2
Rayman Raving Rabbids 2
Zack and Wiki
Ghost Squad
Link's Crossbow Training
Soul Calibur Legends
NiGHTS
Dragonball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3
I seriously doubt I'll get that many games over the course of the next two months, but I plan on having them all at one point and certainly at least half that list before the year is out.
Nearly forgot, as for the DS:
Contra IV
Phoenix Wright: Trials and Tribulations
Dementium: The Ward
FF XII Revenant Wings
Dragon Quest Monster: Joker
Luminous Arc
-
Nice list, Kezay. I'll definitely take a few of your recommendations into consideration.
Orange00: Great to see you too!
My RPG-fix for DS this holiday is Final Fantasy IV DS. It comes out only four days before Christmas Eve, and hopefully they won't push it back and it'll be available!
Does anyone else have recommendations for my Wii action-fix this holiday? Or DS RPG and actions fixes?
-
I second Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin. Get it now or you will die.
EDIT: By my hand.
-
I strongly recommend Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, I bought it recently and I love every second of it.
I'm also looking forward to Umbrella Chronicles this month.
-
Yeah, and you could always get a pre-order in of Smash Bros Brawl. That'll fill your action cravings quite nicely.
-
get zack & wiki
honestly, it's the single best Wii game out there right now and the only reason it doesn't sell is GASP YOU HAVE TO THINK TO FINISH THE GAME
-
If you don't already have Resident Evil 4 for another system, you should go ahead and get the Wii version. It's pretty rad.
-
Yeah, I've heard wonderful things about Zack and Wiki. I didn't see it at Gamestop, though, so I imagine one might have to go online for it unless there are shops in your area not owned by Gamestop.

WALMART.
But seriously, Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn is out now, I'd buy that. I bought it last night but haven't opened it yet. So it might be good.
-
I was pretty pissed from the Smash Bros. delay (which was supposed to be my action fix for the holiday). I honestly wasn't expecting a delay, but because of it I had better see good ol' Mega Man in it!!!

FFIV DS comes out this year? Or are you importing it from Japan or what? (I simply know the game is on the way, not sure exactly when however. :P)

Oh shit, I am completely wrong. I read it on Gamespot as Dec. 20th, 2007, but I completely missed the (JP) next to it. Sorry about the mislead.
Fuck. Now I'm missing out on both my handheld action AND RPG fixes this year.
Now I REALLY need your guys' help! Recommend away!

Hey all, Mayor Boytouch here.
Don't fret, dear RyanThunder. Your final fantasy requirements can still be filled come November 20th. Revenant Wings makes its north american debut then.
Also I've never seen you swear before, RyanThunder. I must say, I'm very disappointed.

Actually if you check his post history, he does say "shit" rather often. "Fuck" however... :fogetnah:
-
Usually the reason I don't FUCKING :gwa: swear is because everyone else usually does it for me in the topics I post in.
Make no mistake, though. I swear like a sailor in real life, but for some reason I just keep it to a bare minimum when posting on forums.

I don't know when Archaic Sealed Heat is coming out (DS) but it looks really cool so keep on the lookout for that one. Its a pretty sweet looking RPG with amazing visuals for the DS. Also Square has an RPG coming up called It's a Wonderful Life, but again I don't know when it comes out. The Bleach fighting game that recently came out is supposed to be quite good, I hear its up to the standards of Jump Ultimate Stars. Also if you haven't gotten Phoenix Wright 3 then GET IT NOW.
-
Yeah ASH (Archaic Sealed Heat) seems cool. The only thing I dislike are the pre-rendered character models. Also, I recommend you get RE4 for the Wii (seriously great game), and maybe try Trauma Center 2nd Opinion and Super Paper Mario (havent tried them but they seem interesting). As for games I might get: Metroid Prime 3: Corruption; Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn; Mario Galaxy (getting it this month though).
-
wow, zack & wiki looks fun. i must get it.
-
Most cool games that are released for Wii this year are already released.
Because of this, i'm just going to recommend good games you might want
to play, with the risk you already played them:
- Metroid Prime - Corruption
- Zack & Wiki
- Super paper Mario (I love these games)
- Naruto (Seems to be getting high reviews, but you should really be a fan to buy)
- Resident Evil 4 (Not exactly worth buying if you played or owned this on GC or PS2)
Promising games to be released:
- Godzilla Unleashed (Nov 13)
- RE: Umbrella Chronicles (which isn't quite a regular RE)
- Trauma Center: New Blood (Nov 20)
- Agatha Christie: And then there were none (Nov 30) (Adventure, Point 'n Click detective)
- DBZ Tenkaichi 3 (Dec 3) (Promising to be the best DBZ fighter. Ever.)
---------
You should also keep in mind that you're owning a Wii. These things play GC games
too. In short, if you haven't played some of the superb games on GC, it might be worth
the trouble trying those. I loved MGS: Snake Eater and Paper Mario on the Cube.
-
Red Steel is a shitfest. Don't buy it. Just don't. Medal of Honor Heroes 2 is looking good. IGN keep raving on about how its controls beat the mighty Metroid Prime 3's.
But from now until Christmas, there ain't much happening on Wii. Medal of Honor 2 and Mario Galaxy are the only games I'm looking forward to. Zak and Wiki's looking nice, but it doesn't hit the UK until next year.
-
Revenant Wings and Batallion Wars 2 both look really good. I'm planning on getting them both once I can work a lot over winter break.
Damn you for putting up Zack and Wiki. I have to buy that now too...so gay.
-
If you are wary of Red Steel, then don't even touch Dragon Blade. It's at least 5x more shittfest than Red Steel.
I have a nephew with a wii that is really desperate for action games too, so I know about these things from secondhand experience. (Hell is being asked by a relative to help him beat a level on a really shitty game)
-
Zak and Wiki's looking nice
Whoa, thought I was the only one who even knew that game exists.
And it's Zack, foo.
-
You could pick up Guitar Hero 3 for the Wii, it's pretty fun.
-
The Wii has been out for a year, and (not counting Virtual Console stuff) my library only consists of:
Wii Sports
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
Excite Truck
WarioWare: Smooth Moves
Guitar Hero III
EDIT: Alright, I think I've found my Wii and DS action-fixes for this year: Soulcalibur Legends and Scurge: Hive, respectively. My next question is...have any of you played the RPG called "Contact" for the DS? Is it any good? I've had my eye on it since it's from the creator of Killer7...but will it be worth investing time into?
-
Ryan, what difficulty do you play on on GH3?
perhaps we could play together (I play on Medium/Hard on anything loseable, I'll play expert on Pro Faceoff/Faceoff, but I'll most likely lose)
-
Zack and Wiki is definitely on my list, as well as MySims (unless it sucks, someone tell me if it sucks right now) and Metroid Prime. Besides that, everything else I am wanting isn't going to be out by Christmas, but I'm waiting for Geometry Wars, Trauma Center: New Blood, Samba de Amigo, Super Smash Brothers Melee, and fucking NO MORE HEROES.
-
I want a DS with Animal Crossing: Wild World
:((((( I'll probably end up buying it myself/

MySims is supposed to be quite mediocre. It's supposed to be good for kids, however, they've taken out a lot of the aspects that make The Sims interesting. (you can't make any friends or anything in this one)
It has a median score of 69% on Metacritic. It has reviews ranging from 94% to 45%

Yea we could probably play. If I want to have fun I'll play on Hard, but the real difficulty I'm capable of is Expert. However, most songs in Expert for me now are just practically impossible and don't become fun for me anymore.
Again, does anyone know more about the game Contact?
-
I'll be home all day in about an hour maybe (depending on college), anyways, add me and give me your friend code. Here's mine
3995 4661 4924
as I said, I'm not too good on Expert (only passed Slow Ride and Hit Me With Your Best Shot) and I'm on Tier 7 on Hard
-
Rayman Raving Rabbids 2
This. I'm so excited.
-
That shitty DS RPG? The controls were crap, the stat levelling was counterintuitive, and the non-ending was a failed attempt at a plot twist that left a dull throbbing in the back of my head for several weeks.
On the other side of the spectrum, I really, really liked that game. Especially the class system, and twist at the end.
-
mysims sucks big.

Alright I'll add you up when I get the chance. Damn stupid question, but where do I find my friend code on my Wii?
-
you need the FC from your game, not your Wii, anyways:
Wii Friend Code: From the Wii menu go to the Wii Message Board (bottom right corner) The go into create message, iirc... it's one of the buttons in the message board area.
GH3 Friend Code: Start up GH3, go to Nintendo WFC. make an account(screen name/band name) then go into show friends roster. The GH3 FC is in the top left. (may take a while to connect, and appear, just exit and re-enter a few times, or come back after playing some songs)
-

Agreed, 100%
-
Hmm, alright, so that's 2 for 3 on Contact. Maybe this'll be my DS RPG fix this year.
-
no ryanthunder, listen to me, I am your biggest fan.
contact is awful, not fun at all.

How are you my biggest fan? I don't even post on here that often! :gwa:

Well I just picked up Medal of Honor Heroes 2 today. Planned on getting both it and Umbrella Chronicles but the only copies of UC they had were preorders. :/
ANyway, MoH:H2 is pretty decent and IGN was pretty accurate in it sporting even better controls than MP3: Corruption, mainly because it boasts just as tight a layout but on top of that allows the option to resize the bounding box as you see fit so there is no excuse about that being a problem; at least in this game. Single player wise, pretty decent thus far and the way it plays reminds me a lot more of the earlier MoH titles as well as European Assault; not sure what the heck happened with the other games but I didn't like them at all, so I'm digging the style of this one. The gesture based controls for various weapons seems somewhat silly at first, but they work pretty darn well despite some of the motions you have to make. As such, the shotgun is still a fav. of mine since you get to actively make the pump action to cock it - silly as I mentioned before, but it feels good after blasting a dude in the face and then going in for another round.
Online wise, for a Wii game it's...well, the only online FPS on the system and pretty bare bones overall (only deathmatch, team deathmatch and CTF) despite EA hosting the online service instead of Nintendo's for it. Everything runs smoothly, lag free, 32 players, arenas are pretty varied and the game makes changes accordingly to balance the field of battle as people drop out and jump into games freely as a match is going on.
I don't plan on putting much time into the online till Galaxy is done so I'm jumping in and out casually just to get a taste of how things are going.
-
That Ghost Squad game looks pretty sweet...even if you do need the Wii Zapper for it. Not sure if I'd like the on-rails shooting though.
What do you guys think of it?
-
Actually you don't need the Zapper to play it. The Zapper isn't a standalone controller, merely a shell to house the Wii remote and nunchaku so that you have the form of a gun like peripheral to play such games with. Every game that is compatible with the zapper can just as easily be played with the stand alone Wii remote and nunchaku or Wii remote alone. I'm getting that Crossbow Training game on Monday so I can see what the zapper is like for myself; otherwise there are some third party peripherals out there I want to try that seem pretty awesome, like the shotgun one I saw featured on IGN not too long ago.

Yea, that makes sense. I heard about that other Wii shotgun-looking peripheral, and Game Informer said it's complete crap, so buy carefully!
Anyone play "Dementium: The Ward" for the DS? Does it play well? Is it a worthy time/money investment?
-
Alright, I guess I'll keep the shotgun thing in mind. They have tons of gun peripherals by third parties so if that doesn't work out, I can just get a pistol looking one or something. I'm just a fan of shotguns so that was a first choice type thing. :P
Anyway, made use of Toys R Us' Buy 2 get 1 Free deal today and picked up:
Zack and Wiki
Tomb Raider Anniversary
Naruto Clash of Ninja Revolution
Later in the week when they get in Soul Calibur Legends, I'll be picking up that, RE: UC and Lego Star Wars Complete. After gift cards and coupons I'll only be paying out $130 when all is said and done across six games. Not bad. ;)

Ah, so Toys R Us is the store that has that deal. I saw an add the other day and forgot which store it was. Thanks for reminding me.
I'm going to get SMG, Battalion Wars 2, and something else on Wednesday (when does the deal end?). The third game will most likely be Zack and Wiki, but I'll see.
-
The deal ends Wednesday actually. Also, good luck finding those games. I'm not sure about other stores but my store got slammed and not many of the better games are available.
-
I had a feeling that might happen. Hopefully I'll get lucky and find SMG and another game or two.
-
Oh man, I hope you guys took notice of Geometry Wars: Galaxies. I've played this before, and it was really fun. Now that it has actual PROGRESSION and co-op I bet it'll be addicting as hell.
Not only that, but apparently the DS version of the game links up with the Wii version to unlock bonus content!
This is SO going to be my action-fix for the Wii this Christmas (especially since Soulcalibur Legends has been getting some pretty bad reviews).
-

I got that particular title the first instant I saw it available. The beauty of it is how much addictive play you can get out of such a modestly priced title. The co-op uses separate stages so it is more limiting than the single-player mode, but you do get a helper bot in single-player that you can train and upgrade various behaviors for. (For those of you that cheat all your DS games: I can personally confirm that the DS game still links up to the wii even when running from a flash card)

DS RPG'S
Valkirie Profile
Yu-Gi-Oh 5Ds World Championship 2010 Reverse of Arcadia
And if your really lucky Lufia: curse Of The Sinistals will be out this year. A remake of Lufia 2 on the snes except in 3D and is an action RPG instead of turn based. The Japanese version plays well so I can't wait for the English localisation.
