Title: Story-driven FPS games
Post by: Drule on November 12, 2007, 02:13:32 am
Hey!

I'm looking for some new games to play and I really like story-driven FPS games with puzzle, platform and adventure elements, so if you know of any shooters like Half-Life 2 or Deus Ex or The Thing then post them here! Preferably with some info.

Thanx

I really enjoyed Tribes: Vengeance and No One Lives Forever 1 and 2.  I'm a big fan of stories. :)  I liked Deus Ex, too (just played it last month).

Chronicles of Riddick comes to mind. Set in the movie setting and has some pretty nice story elements (and fairly good voice acting with Vin Diesel and a bunch of other people). It doesn't have a lot of puzzle-elements though but instead has a bunch of adventure elements where there are areas where you can run around and do "inventory puzzles".

- Far Cry & Far Cry: Instincts: Predator (2 story modes"Instincts" and "Evolution"),
- Darkwatch (only got mediocre scores due to its lack luster multiplayer)
- Quake 1, 2, 4
- Freedom fighters (thrid person shooter, but utterly badass game)
- Jedi: Outcast
- Red Faction
- Classics: Blood, Doom, Duke Nukem 3D, Hexen, Heretic, Wolfenstein 3D, Marathon, Marathon 2: Durandal, Marathon Infinity, Descent
- Halo: Combat Evolved
- Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis
- Painkiller (not really story driven, but single play focused)
- F.E.A.R. (and expansions)
- S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl
- Doom 3
- Rainbow Six
- Ghost recon, (the first 2, technically the "advanced warfighter" series was not a FPS)

never played, heard they where good/decent:
- SiN Episodes
- Return to Castle Wolfenstein
- Serious Sam
- Perfect Dark

I haven't really been a fan of FPS games, I think the only one I really enjoyed was Goldeneye back on the N64 but I recently bought a 360 SPECIFICALLY for Bioshock since it just looked so god damn awesome (and it was) so I definitely recommend picking up a copy of Bioshock. Since playing Bioshock I've picked up other FPS/FPS-Like games like Halo 3 and Gears of War but neither were nearly as good. I'll be picking up Orange Box over the next fiew days and I'll let you know what I think of that.

But other than Bioshock I definitely suggest Timesplitters 2 as it is also one of the best FPS games ever. Except Neo-Tokyo or whatever, that level sucks balls.

...I don't really think Gears of War is a FPS like game at all...

Where are you getting that from?

You have a gun and you run around shooting things. It is third person I know but it is basically the same in way of controls and POINTING TARGET AT MONSTERS AND SHOOTING.

I see...I think that's a very broad generalization but I understand what you're getting at.

Also, I've only truly enjoyed a few FPS's, they are (in no particular order)

BioShock
Resistance: Fall of Man
No One Lives Forever
The Metroid Prime Series (If this counts...it's not exactly a shooter persay)

I've tried to get into the Halo Series but I find it a bit repetitive.  I like the 2nd and 3rd better than the first.  My boyfriend LOVES Halo though.

Maybe you are just being a genre whore idk.

I am not big on CLASSIFYING EVERYTHING BY SPECIFIC GENRE so why don't you go ahead and tell me what genre it is if it is not FPS-Like.

Okay a few things here.

First off, I'm a female.

Second I don't really consider Metroid Prime an FPS because its focus is mainly on exploration rather than shooting everything.

Last, I wouldn't classify Gears as FPS like because I'm a stubborn bitch.  (Seriously I have no idea why, maybe it's because I generally dislike FPS's but love Third Person Shooters).

Jeebus people, lighten up, I wasn't even being insulting I said I understood what he was getting at.

Family guy moment!!!

Peter: Jeez, what a bitch.

I couldn't help it...anyway I reccommend Call of Duty 4, it is pretty good.

Hey I forgot to mention Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines which is one of the most awesome games of all time. It switches between FPS for Shooting and Third Person for Melee and it is pretty much an RPG. You run around and talk to people and choose dialogue options and it has a killer atmosphere/soundtrack.

LOTD (Land of the dead) your zombie fps, kill zombies with all sorts of weapons. I hate it when great games get no recognition at all :tsk:

Red Faction 2
Unreal 2

Does the Thief series count? I only played a demo of the first one and am aware there isn't a terrible amount of shooting taking place, but it is first person(at least the first and second are) and story driven.

I think I've told you on IRC before Drule, when you asked for realistic FPS games. But here goes...

Breakdown (http://www.hg101.classicgaming.gamespy.com/breakdown/breakdown.htm). All info you need is in the link. I don't remember if you have an XBox or not though...

I thought I was just about the only one who knew of Breakdown's existence, aside from... was it Marcus? That game was fantastic.

Truly fantastic. One of the best FPS games I have ever played, and it's just because I played Breakdown that other FPS games feel boring to me, even games like Bio-Shock.

You should have included a list of obvious examples that you've played or are not interested in.

This isn't really my genre, but . . .

Bioshock is one of the best games I've ever played (seriously).  Try it, seriously.

Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl is also pretty good; rather than being an RPG with shooter elements such as Vampire: Bloodlines, it's a shooter with RPG elements.  Stalker is poorly optimized though.  My computer is pretty good and is definitely up to par with the best PCs available when the game came out, (dual core AMD 3GB, 4 gig DDR3 RAM, Nvidia 8600 GTS OC), and I still have to turn a lot of shaders down.  I wouldn't recommend picking it up unless your rig is really good.

Otherwise, Black was somewhat competent I guess.  But I can't judge it too harshly as I don't play many FPSes, and therefore every new one is always the best FPS I had played for a long time.

HMMM Yeah With Bloodlines, my PC is easily capable of running the game but with water and smashed windows I just get a pink and white wireframe for some reason.

Errr . . .

I was complaining about Stalker's performance, not Vampire.  I'll need to edit my post!

iirc Vampire was pretty glitchy no matter what too, not in reference to what card you're using because it's fairly old. I remember going to the docks and the water fucking up even though the rest worked fine.

stalker isnt that great unfortunately. the story feels really tacked on. i ended up accidentally finishing it with like half the story left uncovered.

its a cool game to play if you mod it, but yeah it isnt really very good in the story department.

since when is unreal story driven ,  just random arena fights.

also, just finished up Gears of War on Pc, and why did they the hell did they minimize  the story.... there was this great setting and gameplay but the backstory was no where to be found.

Bioshock and Resistance are the first two that hit me.  These are the only two FPS games that I've ever gotten really into and beaten.
