I am working on building a new PC, current PC:
AMD XP 3600+(2.1ghz)
3x512 DDR RAM(PC3200, 1500mb)
EVGA 128mb 6600GT
80gb hdd
New PC:
ASUS M2N32-SLI AM2 motherboard
EVGA GeForce 8800GT Superclocked 512MB(PCI E, old was AGP)
G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR2(PC2 6400)
Seagate 250GB HDD(SATA)
AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400+ Windsor 3.2GHz
My main question is how much power do I need? I am thinking about getting a Thermaltake W0106RU 700W supply, is that sufficient? I doubt I will ever run in SLI, as to me it seems a waste of money right now(no game really needs that much power atm). And if anyone has some suggestions about what to get let me know, my spending limit doesn't really matter(this is around $900) but preferably cheapest I can get that will run any current game on high settings. Thanks for any input!
-
just an fyi, dont get one to run crysis on high because you can't. well, you can without aa, but yeah dont be surprised if you spend $1200 and still cant run it with full aa.
uh, 700ish should be enough power to run that stuff. my pc is a little more powerful than that and its running a 1010w psu so i cant really speak from experience but i dont think im using most of my power :x.
-
Yea, I am not really interested in Crysis. I don't like games that rely completely on graphics, mostly my current PC is outdated.. I can't run TF2 on highest settings, and some new games don't even make it(which is sad, my PC is only 2 years old and at that time it could run every game on the market at highest settings). If I added another card in SLI and another stick of RAM I could get Crysis on one of the highest settings, I am getting a motherboard this time that I can upgrade unlike last time.
-
Minimum is around 450W, so yeah a 700W PSU will do the trick.
-
Crysis will run fine almost perfect on that graphics card. Benchmarks show that you'll get around 35 FPS with no AA, and around 23 FPS with full AA at a 1600x1200 resolution. But you're not really interested in Crysis so that doesn't really apply here.
You're current PC is actually almost the same as mine, Magicbush. I have an AMD XP 3400+, with the same graphics card and 1GB of RAM. I'm thinking of doing an upgrade myself.
By the way, does anybody know if there's a huge difference between the Intel Quad Core, Dual Core, or AMD's new processors? I'm thinking of getting a Quad Core, but I'm not sure if it's really worth the extra money.

Thanks for looking that up. I saw a article on the net about Intel vs. AMD, for next-gen processors. It had around 6 pages worth of different tests/benchmark tests. The new AMD processors blew the intel away, and they are much cheaper(almost half the price of Intel processors of same speed). I think Intel stuff is more for servers, and business type processes whereas AMD is more for the average joe playing games.

Rofl, seriously, you won't get full AA on ANY res with any FPS at all. You just don't.
Not speaking from BENCHMARKS and shit, but speaking from HOW THE GAME ACTUALLY RUNS.
Um, yeah, nothing else to add.
-
Full AA? What are we talkin' here? 4x? 8x? 16x?
Edit: Also, I'm running sli with 4 hdds and a dvdrw and 4 extra case fans and I'm doing fine on my 600w, so 700w sounds like plenty.

that was almost helpful, wasn't it? my bad :3

With an 8800 you will. My friend has one and he typically runs x8 AA (as opposed to x16 because it's a rather negligable difference and the performance gain is there) but he can and does run x16 on games like Counter Strike: Source and Battlefield 2. So yeah, you're talking out of your ass.
My recommendation for you, MaGicBush, would be to consider adding more RAM to that setup. Depending on the game, 2 gigs may not be sufficient to give you a buttery smooth experience (Crysis obviously comes to mind, I'm certain other games in the future will be equally demanding on your memory). Also, I've had bad experience with ASUS motherboards and I would say avoid their mobos altogether if possible. Generally they run on Award BIOS which are really shitty for overclocking.
My 2 cents.

I'm.. talking from my PC. E6600, 8800 GTX, 2MB DDR2, I can run it on 1280x1024 with no AA if I OC the card, but even 2xAA on some levels (ie the start one with the jump, any of the densly packed forest levels) and it goes below 20fps which I don't accept.
So yeah, fuck off thanks. I don't care if your friend can do it, I personally can't and I think I will believe me over him!

fuck off thanks... haha whatever. Next time please clarify that you are talking about CRYSIS and not just ANY FPS. Because believe it or not, there are a shit load of FPS's that you can do x16 FSAA on.
EDIT: doh! I see what happened here. Curses multiple meanings for the acronym FPS. :fogetshifty:

I should be able to run crysis well on my new set up :D i even have a spunky image of it all up and running (liquid cooling for the win) but my current machine really struggles to run crysis and its a decent set up, Crysis is a resource hog but an 8800 should be able to run it well, if youir going to SLI it thogh, i've been told you need at least 1000W.
-
1000w is pretty extreme, 700w would be fine for even two 8800s
i hope MaGicBush approves my message :O
-
really? thats not what nvidia said, hmm i guess it depends on model. Ok lets say your right, could my 800W power 2 8800 ultras? a QX6850? and the rest?

Uh, where is this article? Last time I checked, AMD was struggling to keep up with Intel. I got a new computer half a year ago and unfortunately went with AMD because I didn't know Intel would had been the better choice. Maybe it's different now though, I dunno. I'm not really all that well educated on processors but I'm sure someone with more knowledge on the situation can help you choose which processor to pick. I also think that going with 4 gigs of ram could be a good idea.

no wonder.....

This is what I've been told repeatedly aswell. Apparently the new Intels are much better overclockers.
no wonder.....
I had noticed this too XD

AMD has been lagging behind for a bit now, intel has the fastest processor out, the quad core dealy.

That's one spot, just search AMD vs. Intel in google lol. But yea, to start off with I was doing the 2gigs(the mobo has 4 slots, 2 gigs = 2 slots) and as I get money plan to upgrade to 4gb. Also to note, I have used Asus mobo's for years now, and have had no problems(current PC uses a Asus A7n8x-x mobo and is 3 years old). I decided Asus since I had good luck in the past, and am leary about trying new company's.
Oh yea, at work today our instructor was talking about a customer's HDD. He kept saying 250gb of memory, we all assumed RAM and were thinking what the hell. He was talking about how 250gb of memory would be a thing of the past by next year, and how consumers are demanding more and more(with up to a terabyte now). I was thinking what the hell 250gb of RAM will last years into the future rofl. After class he got hounded on lol.
edit: Hrm, just realized some of those reviews are almost 2 years old. I may look into pentiums actually, I have never had a Pentium processor though so have no clue what the differences are. I use my PC for gaming(pretty hardcore), and like to play newest games on at least medium-high settings. I mean 3.4 ghz/w dual-core seems like a good processor(current is a single-core with only 2.1ghz), but I don't know.
-
Yeah, that article was back when AMD was better than Intel. It's a lot different now.

Intel is better than AMD. =/
I would easily go for a quad core if you're looking to upgrade now. It's going to cost you a little bit more, but you won't be having to upgrade for a few years. Since you say you're pretty hardcore, I would definately recommend it. As long as you upgrade to a dual core though, you should be fine.
The biggest performance boost is still going to be the graphics card though.

I was referring to magicbush's system. I've seen some 8800GTX/Ultra SLI systems with quad core processors running at 600-800 though, so it is possible.

yeah next time dont tell me im talking out of my ass then :)
and yeah you dont need 1000w for anything at the moment. i just got one because hopefully that means i wont have to upgrade it for a while, heh.
-
A Kilowatt supply, fuck me. That must be expensive to run power-consumption wise.
Although, if you've got the money to buy such a rig, I doubt you give a bugger.
(This hypocrite is running 750W supply with 8800GTS)
-
Just because it's a 1kw psu doesn't mean that it will constantly run at that wattage, thats just its max.
