faces look passable.. (what's up with Spike's cheekbones??) But the real trouble comes from other physique.. I mean these guys are ment to be ridiculously ripped. Kind of muscles that're able to destroy planets with a swing of a fist. Both of them look rather slim. Still I've been waiting for this so long. Looks like it's really coming!

This movie seriously has potential to be the funniest movie ever created.

This will be an absolutely visceral moviegoing experience

God I seriously just want to see ANY footage of this movie, any DBZ scene depicted with live human actors would be pure hilarity. Like I even have trouble comprehending how people can even TALK the way they do in DBZ

Maybe scooby doo, too.

This just got a new skin, it's been announced that Stephen Chow is producing. Which is a big 'WHAT', but this is the guy behind Kung Fu Hustle, Shoulin Soccer, and many other films.

I'm not sure what to expect anymore.

Both of those films are absolutely amazing. So I think, despite the fact this is DBZ it is probably going to be one of the best films ever.

Marsters looks like a pretty good choice for Piccolo, actually. The other kids looks waaaay too young, though. Then again, it does depend when the movie takes place. Since it's Z, though, and not Dragon Ball (although according to that site linked above the name was changed to Dragon Ball, hmmm...), Goku should be a lot older (and have some fucking muscle).

But yeah, this sounds fucking awesome.

Yes, I've seen that first live-action film.. Don't recommend it. It was so bad that.. well it was just bad. Not even funny-bad.  :fogetnah:
About this movie.. As I said actors look fine by me, at least faces (and I'm huge db-fan). But I'm really worried about their size. Also these guys aren't martial artists, so their fighting won't be very fluent (Some awesome matrix-like shit, no doubt).

I did hear rumours some time ago about the story. Apparently Goku goes some high-school or something and is bullied all the time. But in his spare time he's actually an incredible kung fu- man and trains with his uncle Gohan.. or something. Then there's dragon balls and blah blah .. Bulma  .. blah blah, then there's evil army lead by Piccolo, who actually doesn't appear all green, rather human-like, still alien though. And something.. I sure hope it's not true, but it's very likely they won't be going with the original story. My guess is that they'll base the movie on original dragon ball, change stuff (like Goku being 18 or something) and squeeze it to 2 hours.

So yes,DBZ fans are going berserk no doubt, but I try not to take this too seriously.

Why did you compare this to Snakes on a plane? Makes no sense.. I don't see any link between the two. There's no sign that they would make this intentionally non-intentionally funny? Stephen Chow in, I have high hopes for this. As comedy yes, but not in a sense as Snakes on a plane.

Because dragon ball z is the worst shit in the world. It doesn't matter who makes it; almost everyone knows it's going to be terrible shit. Most people just hope it'll be REALLY FUNNY so they're hyping it. Exactly like with snakes on a plane, which turned out to just be terrible and not funny at all... which is probably how this will be.

I am very hopeful this will be hilarious though!!

Haha true about the actors.. but come on! You're getting practically 'no name white guys' (Well obviously they're not no name and they've done some films/shows in the past) and I know that its an American made film but they couldn't get asians that actually slightly resemble what the DBZ characters look like?

Like maybe Jet Li for Vegeta, and if you've seen the movie War, there were plenty of actors in that movie that would have been 100000000000000x more fit/better for the roles of DBZ chars than those 2 in the link I saw, like one of those samurai warriors in War would have made a PERFECT Goku (As soon as I saw white guys... I thought to myself that this movie might be some shitty joke... Either that or the people who chose these actors are fucking terrible at what they do)..

And I know the actor of Liu-Kang in the first live action Mortal Kombat movie is much older now and his physique has dramastically worsened but basically the look that the Liu-Kang actor had in MK1 way back in the 90's would have been a PERFECT Goku... So they should have went out and got someone like him to play the role...

This is a perfect Goku like character IMHO. Goku is supposed to be jacked, not a skinny bitch like that actor in the link... Same goes for Piccolo. They're all supposed to be jacked

Post by: Bill Murray on November 18, 2007, 02:13:39 am
I take it you're talking physically, because I'm pretty sure Jet Li looks nothing like Vegeta. I'd probably say the guy playing Goku has a similar face, considering he doesn't have giant eyes or extreme hair.

lmao why would they have to be asian

By the way revolution, it's common for actors to train for their role in any given movie. People aren't hired for BEING JACKED dude. do you seriously think every musclebound guy in a movie has looked like that his entire life? also none of the characters look asian at all besides like krillin, and having extensive training in martial arts won't help anyone fire a kamehameha. ugh wait why did I respond to that post

Anyway, I'll probably see this regardless. this'll probably be pretty big when it finally comes around, and unlike transformers or other recent live-action films, almost no one expects this shit to be good

I can see them turning this one into a trilogy easily. First movie: random BS filler with a couple insignigant fights, introducing the villian late in the movie. Number two: fighters train for battle. more insignifigant fights, Goku dies, dragon balls get collected. Movie three: Goku is revived, but the others must stall the villian until he arrives to charge his ki for about an hour and use the spirit bomb to kill the villian, more stupid filler, new villian arrives. All three movies would have to be at least three hours or more.

Really makes me wonder how I was ever a diehard DBZ fan when I look back at the flow of the show.

I think more likely, all three movies cover a single fight. And not even a significant one like Goku vs. Piccolo. It's going to be six hours of Yamcha vs. Emperor Pilaf or something.

The sad thing about this post is that as much as it's an attack against the failings of Dragonball (or more specifically, DBZ)....it also shows that I know way more about the series than I wish I could say I do.

Well it originated from Japan and the chars resemble Japanese people, don't they? I mean... I'd think that it would be a better fit...

And yes I know about the training and stuff but still... why not already get somebody who's built already and at the same time is a better fit (both physically and I guess talent wise in terms of acting... Those actors in that link are talented guys but I know there are tons of better candidates out there)... I dunno but I tend to disagree on that 'none of the characters look asian at all besides krillin', in fact I think they all do (besides anyone with coloured hair.. that's the way I view anime characters anyway...

Plus having that martial arts background will help for better tailoured scenes, more realistic fight scenes with obvious additions of firing beams and stuff...

But at this point in time and from what I've seen from the chosen actors, I'm sorry but I just can't take this film seriously and I still think its one big joke... If its true, I'll probably end up watching it anyway just to see how potentially lame it can be and that when I was a kid, I watched DBZ so...... MUST RELIVE CHILDHOOD MEMORIES IN A JESTERLY FASHION!

Goku wasmt super buff in DB though (yes DB this movie doesn't technically take place in Dragonball Z but in Dragon ball when Piccolo first arrives).
Maybe not super buff, but super ripped. Besides Goku was like 99% of the time a little kid in original DB.

I agree that these guys don't need to be asian, since Goku, Piccolo, etc. are mostly from space anyways. But martial arts training is very important for anywhere close fluent fighting. Yes, it's possible to train for these roles, but it won't come off naturally without some real history with the art. Good example is Matrix, with Neo's uber kung-fu skills... ... ...

If it's gonna be in the DB saga as opposed to Z, it might actually be a good movie period. Plain DB was actually a pretty good series... It's later that it became retarded.

He looks the LEAST Asian IMO.

Also, I think this is based on the original DB, since Piccolo is the villain, so no Vegeta, and no "OVER 9000!!!" scenes. Also, all the characters in DB weren't as ripped in DBZ, so they don't need to be fucking super buff. Remember, Goku was 12 in the original.

Also, whoever said Liu Kang's actor would be perfect for Goku speaks the truth.

I checked out imdb.com to see if this was listed on there, but I couldnt find a Dragon Ball or DBZ movie, that hasn't already been released. Though if it does in fact happen it would be pretty interesting to see. But, I imagine the cheesiness of the special effects may hurt the value of the movie. Or they could choose to go over the top with the special effects, and not take the movie seriously at all. Like a certain fighting movie I loved as a kid than saw it a year ago and realized how terrible it was. (Street Fighter. The one with Jean-Claude VanDam as the fucking American hero!)

It was campy at best. But it was alright if you didn't care that it wasn't entirely canon from the games. Like  Guile having an Austrian accent, Cammy being from Australia, Honda being from Hawaii i think they said, and no real use of the cool moves like the psycho crusher, or Tiger attacks. I think there was a fireball from Ryu, but it was more of a flash of the screen, and Ken did Dragon Punch someone, though sadly his fist wasnt on fire.  But I guess it was pretty good. Though I also liked the Double Dragon movie when I was a kid too.

I think Samuel L. Jackson would have made a good Piccolo, or maybe he can be one of those other random space aliens.

And maybe Johnny Depp as Frieza?  He looks pretty freaky with the right face paint.

edit:  of course, any self-respecting actor would not touch this movie with a 10-foot pole.

Yet they still butcher it..
Actually the main thing DB had going were it's characters and that's what they're butchering!

But I don't care, I never expected this to be very accurate. I'm just hoping this will be cheesy over-the-top anime action movie. Unfortunaly I'm afraid this won't come true either.. This will propably be similar to something like Spider-man.. which is no good.

The thing is that if they followed the original story spot-on, this would really be one of the greatest movies ever!

Do we really know what saga this is set in yet? I mean yes it does very much seem like it will be DragonBall, but the pure testosterone of leveling planets is something that modern cinema has been without. I would much like to see this movie as part of a trilogy of Dragon Ball Z. The first movie about Radditz and Vegita, the second About Freiza and the third about the androids and cell, though admitedly this would make each film a minimum of 3 hours long, and the special effects budget would be through the wroof.

I am not happy with the casting choice, I would much rather they use only real asians for the roles, you know, to get the real feel of the masterpiece series. Jackey Chan, Jet Li, Chou Yun Fat (I am so happy he is in it) would make perfect characters, and by including such Japanese superstars as gackt and perhaps including the korean model, fashion designer and comics artist extraordianaire Pat "Superstar" Lee as Vgetea would be a much successful move. But definately using american actores and names would be a direct insult to us fans of the series. I Heard Goku will be named george something to make the names appeal more to a western audience. Is this true?
If they have to use American actors then they really have to use the best of the trade such as Brad Pit, Angelina Jolie, Ice Cube, Tom Cruise, Nick Cage, Ben Afflect, J-Lo, Queen Latifa, Jack B;lack etc because those are the only actors and actresses who I think have the acting ability in order to fully capture the feel of DragonBall. The idea of Tom Hanks or Will Smith playing Goku is one I often think about fondely.

I expect a really high special effects budget (in equal proportion to the amount of money spent on hiring the previously mentioned actors) because it will be a direct insult to the fans if they use cheap special effects, It would be like watching an old movie, and I only watch old movies to laugh at how un-matrix-ey those movies are (because The Matricx is the pinical of theatrical entertainment). But yes I hope that Weta Workshop are emplpoyed for this movie because thier work on other anime projects such as that pretentious garbage Evenlion are really really flashy and pretty and make watching the movies really entertaining for me. I expect the lightening fast fights to be truely equal to those in Transformers, perhaps with even more slow motion, so we as an audience can see how Goku's muscles ripple when he punches Samuel L Jackson through a cliff, or we can see the Sweat as majin Buu destroys earth at the end of the second movie.

As for directors there are very few people who can do DragonBallZ the justice it deserves, most notibly Michawel bay because he is an excellent director at giving us a strong noticable plot progrwession in a film, and he focuses on the characters yet stops the pace in order to give us a really flashy fight scene, which is what I really look for in movies. Stephen Spielburges would also be a good director, as with working with tom Cruise they together can create a truely emotional experience (something I expect from the works of the sainted Toriyama), but I must say that Peter jackson works marvels with special effects and that makes even Lord of the rings seem a thouroughly enjoybale film series . Though indeed with Stephen Chow at the helm I am sure we will be treated to a real comedy delight, but personally my opinion is that he should work with the other directors I mentioned, along with Weta Workshop and the previously mentioned acting cast, to create a fully authentic Dragonball Z excperience.

This is my view, my hopes and my expectations on what the dragonball Z movie should be :)
This will no doubt be the greatest movie ever made, and I really cannot wait for it to hit the big screen, and I assure you, when I go to the cinema to watch it, me and my fellow DragonBallers will be in costume, for the full experience, as I hope you people will be too :3

If this movie wants to capture the feeling of the actual series then it's going to be 8 hours long with half that time spent powering up.

did someone make this joke already?  i didn't bother to read the last 3 pages.

On a serious note, I enjoyed Dragon Ball (the original) and I think it would work as a movie more so than DBZ.  Dragon Ball was, at it's heart, an adventure story while DBZ was full of planet destroying badasses and golden hair.  I don't know how you can make a decent plot when every character is capable of leveling a city by blinking.

Is the budget really $100m?

That was fucking hilarious Ragnar.

About the picture, is that an actual photo from one of the scenes being played out or just the guys practicing, because I don't remember anything like that in the series.

Poor James Marsters...

He goes from Buffy/Angel, to Smallville, to crappy horror B-movies, to the Dragonball movie.
Started great, and gets a little bit worse as he goes on...Before you know it, he'll be the star of the next revolutionary spoof movie, although this Dragonball movie seems to be a parody in it's own way.

These three caught my attention... That would be extremely funny.
This had better have the highest special effects budget, like, ever! With the bright balls of light and crazy ass explosions and flying. Damn... That's a good $100,000.

I'd add another three zeros and we're probably getting close to what this movie'll need to not look awful.

I enjoyed the Hitman movie.

It was fine as an action movie but you can't say it didn't horribly butcher the source material.

Everyone knows this is DragonBall, not Dragonball Z, right?

The first half of dragonball had no kai, no powering up, none of the crazy shit you see in dragonball z, just martial arts and kiddy humor.
Point: This movie does not need a million dollar budget to be good. Do I think it will be good? Not a chance. But special effects aren't as essential to this movie as they will be if a sequel comes around.
I understand they're modernizing and everything, but I would've liked to see random wild dinosaurs running around and wierd dog-people living in the cities.

My hopes are high and my expectations are low.

It's clear they're not going to follow the original story. Maybe very loosely, but this will get fans upset for sure! Personally I would have liked to see Saiyan-Frieza part of the story with all the crazy fights, stupid looking aliens and going Super! Screencaps look awful btw.

Good thing is that it's not Dragon Ball without Kamehameha! So seeing the ridiculousness of live-action ki-blast is already worth the money!!

That is so true. Some guy some screaming while special effects fly out of his hand...
I gotta say, this is going to be more funny than action-y.

And I know It's Dragon Ball saga, but do you think they'll have that whole constipation thing, too?

http://blogs.ign.com/I_LIKE_TURTLES/

[GOKU] 18 years old, Goku is considered uncool and unpopular at school, but he is in fact an extremely talented martial arts fighter who gets rigorous training from his grandfather, Gohan. After the death of his grandfather by the evil Lord Piccolo, Goku finds his destiny in his grandfather's dying request that he find Master Roshi and gather all seven Dragon Balls (of which he has one) in order to prevent Piccolo from succeeding in his desire to use the dragonballs to take over the world. Trained by Master Roshi, aided by Bulma and Yamcha, friends he meets along the way, Goku proves himself a formidable, almost undefeatable fighter. On many dangerous adventures to find the remaining Dragon Balls and thus save the world, Goku conquers physical and emotional challenges, ultimately saving the world but clearly impelled to spend his life searching for the Dragon Balls with his trusty companions...LEAD

[BULMA] 20s, female, pretty, with great intelligence behind her gleaming eyes, Bulma is a determined, competitive young woman whose father's five star Dragon Ball was stolen by Lord Piccolo, and who believes that she can harness their unlimited energy and change the world like Edison or Einstein. Bulma, who has a DBE (a Dragon Ball locator device), teams up with Goku, and with him meets up with Master Roshi and Yamcha as they attempt to collect the missing Dragon Balls before Piccolo can destroy the world. A resourceful and courageous young woman who's also a weapons expert, she overcomes many obstacles with her colleagues, only to find the seven Dragon Balls ultimately snatched from their grasp--but it's clear she's going to continue searching for them with Goku and Yamcha...LEAD

[CHI ][/CHI] Asian, 20. Goku??s lifelong love interest, Chi Chi is an attractive, tom boy-ish young woman who has grown up with Goku. She has studied martial arts and has always suspected that Goku possesses talents that are unusual and extraordinary. After Goku embarks on his journey to redeem his grandfather??s death, Chi Chi meets up with Goku and his crew at a tournament of champions where their mutual attraction finally heats up during a training session.

[YAMCHA] 20s, "the bad boy who has no trouble attracting women," he taunts Goku, Bulma and Master Yoshi, who are trapped in a sand cave, rather than helping them with his rope ladder. However, after overhearing Master Roshi's tale of Piccolo once nearly destroyed the Earth and are preparing to do so again, Yamcha has a change of heart and not only helps the three in the desert, but becomes a valuable part of the team. An ingenious young man whose utililty truck is the Swiss Army Knife of trucks--every tool and gear imaginable sprouts from its body--Yamcha joins Goku, Bulma (with whom he becomes romantically involved) and Master Yoshi on their quest to find the seven Dragon Balls before Piccolo...LEAD

[MASTER ][/MASTER] This older man is a good friend of Goku's grandfather, Gohan, and Goku comes to enlist his help after his grandfather is killed. Although he looks like a beggar, Roshi is one of the world??s most fearsome fighters. Master Roshi begins Goku's rigorous training to prepare him for the adventure of finding and fighting for the seven Dragon Balls to save the world from Piccolo's destructive plan. A wise, somewhat wry man who knows as much about human nature as he does about martial arts, Master Roshi is impressed with Goku's fighting but reminds him of his failings as well...LEAD

[LORD ][/LORD] An ancient being who despite his humanoid appearance, is from an alien race determined to take over the world. Piccolo is the cursed ruler of a demonic race who nearly destroyed Earth 2000 years ago, and with the coming of the eclipse and the possession of all seven Dragon Balls, he's prepared to free himself and do the job right this time. Crafty and smart, Piccolo has some disturbing news for Goku, namely that the boy is actually a Saiyan who's destined to join Piccolo as his right hand in destroying and enslaving the planet...LEAD

[GOHAN] Goku's kindly, wise grandfather, he looks like he's in his 70s but moves like Jet Li. An accomplished martial artist who trains Goku on the bow staff, he loves his grandson and is happy to prepare a special feast for him on his 18th birthday, as well as a special gift: a 3 star Dragon Ball. Tragically, Gohan is struck down by the high ninjas of the Namek-Jins, and as he dies he sends his grandson out to do face his destiny and do battle against them...

[MAI] Late 20s, female, her features exotic, sexy but deadly, dressed in gleaming black, with weapons strapped all over her body, she's a martial arts expert and Lord Piccolo's chief enforcer. Crafty and quick thinking, Mai uses her ability to shapeshift near the climax of the movie and takes on the form of Chi Chi, a young martial arts expert who's romantically involved with Goku and later saves Piccolo from Master Roshi's curse; once she is revealed she ends up in the fight of her life.

[CAREY ][/CAREY] (incomplete summary) Male, late teens - early 20s, high school junior, he is sort of a boss of his classmates. regardless of race or nationality.

They... they butchered the story. Absolutely. Cut in to tiny pieces, pissed all over it, set it on fire and raked the ashes.

I don't think I could take watching this movie after reading those character bios. I mean, come on, they didn't even get something as small and insignificant as Gohan's ball being the fourth, not the third, right.

Damn them! Damn them to HFIL! *sob*

And yes, I am a fan who is well aware of its faults. <The manga is slightly better, though some parts of the anime (character interactions, mostly) are superior>

But damn! Someone seriously needs to put this out of its misery.

Ahah! Those are horrible, I never could have told they're from DB-movie apart from that kame-uniform. This looks more like Mortal Kombat. Who is that guy in that orange-gi anyway? It's not Chatwin, is it? and why is that costume made that way? In Dragon Ball it's just normal orange-gi with normal wristbands and kung-fu shoes, but apparently they had to make it cool. I suppose that blue shirt underneath weights hundreds of kilos as in the show.

Can't wait for Dragon Ball: The Movie: The Game!!

Derp, its the stunt devil, which explains the other pictures with both actor and non-actor in them.

And btw, it's a movie adaptation. There are reasons DB was made as a manga/anime, and one of them is YOU CAN DO ANYTHING YOU WANT. as opposed to movies where some things just arent possible within an absurdly large budget.

Of course I never expected it to look like one. From day one I've been waiting for something along these lines. I don't mind, I'll propably get few laughs out of this, but some hardcore-teenage-DBZ-fanbois are screaming with each new shot revealed.
Title: Dragon Ball Movie: Ghostbusters' Ernie Hudson joins the cast

Well let's put it this way, if it looked anything remotely like dragonball than the guys responsible would get locked up for injecting everyone with insane amounts of steroids, forcing the actors' voice boxes to shred due to excessive amounts of grunting, and inhuman amounts of prosthetics.
there is no way a movie could look anything like DragonBall because it is't even the least bit ground in reality.

Also I dunno Psyburn I mean if those production stills showed Vin Diesel, Keanu Reeves or Quentin Tarrantino or something then it's a pretty big clue that the movie will suck!

Why? Just more of GW's movie elitism? Just what do you WANT? That version of Piccolo is many times better than the one that floated around during the first rumors years ago. It's a movie adapted from a freakin' Ki using, alien infested, wish granting dragonfested, 300 year old pervertfested, blah blah blah, CARTOON. If a few pictures of the the CAST ruins the movie for you, well then fuck, do you just get a lot of movies ruined for you?

But I am gay for DBZ so I dunno. This will be the first, and probably only, movie I ever dress-up for.

Dark Angel, have you read through this topic? I woud guess not, because I've defended it pretty much the whole way.

I'm a big DBZ fan too, not to the point where I say "wtf goku is not white," but still a big fan.
If you can't tell this movie is going to be bad, you're probably taking it a little too far.

I mean for christ's sake, look at Chow Yun Fat. Without even seeing the movie you already know they have sloughtered the entire concept of master roshi. I want this to be good, but I let's be real.

By the way, probably should point out that we all hated the idea of Forbidden Kingdom from the director of Stuart Little 2, but it came out and did pretty well (http://uk.rottentomatoes.com/m/forbidden_kingdom/).

I think we all know this is going well, there are idiots that like Dragon Ball and there are idiots who don't get cinema and this has Chow Yun Fat and hot women in leather/pvc and sweet action moves. I don't think it can do as bad as Dead or Alive, that had pretty much nothing going for it.

Mario Bros.

I know this movie is terrible, let me get that out of the way. Godawful. Would not pay for it in any form.

But it misses the mark so fucking widely that I have to give it credit. I realize RUN LEFT TO RIGHT 32 TIMES doesn't translate well onto screen, but making it a cyberpunk-ish science-fiction action comedy? That enters some brave new world of fucking-it-uppery.

Yup, movie makers will spend thousands just to annoy nerds. Nothing enjoys expensive studios more than flushing money down the drain.

It's a test to see how the prosphetics look on camera/film. It's a final design (and looks consciderably more interesting than some lame monkey) and they ain't gunna change it apart from minor cosmetics. Deal with it.

"fans" aren't the audience for this movie. The general public are, if a movie of any franchise was made to please it's fans it'd be the worst box office failure in history. Look at Transformers, look at Dark Knight, look at the upcomming G.I. Joe movie. Stuff gets changed to make it appeal to a wider audience. Very few people would take the idea of a stupid monkey being some ultra-powerful being as a serious concept, even for a movie based on dbz it would lose all credibility.

I understand the point, but isn't this akin to making Optimus Prime transform into a motorcycle? I don't think "Very few people would take the idea of a stupid monkey being some ultra-powerful being as a serious concept, even for a movie based on dbz it would lose all credibility." makes a good arguement anyway. There is far too much technology/special effects available that something couldn't be done that doesn't result in something that is in no way related to being a Saiyan. But hey, if this ends up being my biggest gripe, that would be great.

dude the transformers fans threw a major spaz when the designs were changed and they didn't look retro. Batman fans initially spat out their gamerfuel bars when they saw Heath Ledger's joker look nothing like a clown, G.I. Joe fans cried little sick tears into their kfc buckets when stormshadow was revealed wearing modern attire instead of a gi outfit. american godzilla fans nearly commited suicide when godzilla was released in 97.
These kind of superficial changes happen all the time because some ideas don't always work. Regardless of speical effects when someone turns into a monkey... they turn into a monkey. That isn't what the average moviegoer wants unless it's a comedy film(and any comedy film with that premise is a shit comedy film, but will end up selling millions because people are dumb and think anything with monkeys in is hilarious). They want sleak and sexy, they want modern.

"Goku doesn't look like a Saiyan... where's his chimpfeatures?"
"Optimus Prime doesn't look like a transformer... he looks like guyver?"
"Destro doesn't look like Destro... where's his iron mask?"
"Godzilla isn't our Godzilla... Where's his/her/it's radiation breath?"

basically all the characters in the movie are "based" off characters in dragonball. And the story is a remake of an animated Dragonball Movie.

Your post sounds like you are just repeating yourself, and not addressing what I actually said. "but isn't this akin to making Optimus Prime transform into a motorcycle?" is what I asked, not "isn't this akin to giving Optimus Prime flames on his truck instead of just being plain ole red white and blue (or whatever colors, I don't know)". They'd have been better advised to make him look like a were wolf. There are plenty of great looking werewolves, it's not far fetched at all to make a good looking were-monkey. That picture's depiction is completely different from what it should be. The only things in common is the simple fact that there is a transformation, and his clothes. You don't go from Optimus Prime truck, to Optimus Prime boat, you shouldn't go from fur covered beast to completely hairless thing-they-just-created.

See, the bits in bold were actually a very good post, it's just the rest is pretty stupid (and the follow-up).

So what if it's a monkey? That's the original. Would you have preferred to have seen a GIANT ALIEN replacing King Kong in the/a remake? King Kong is the man.

If it's the original, you should stick to the original, it's not about it 'selling better', a giant earth-destroying monkey is an awesome idea if pulled off correctly. There's no point excusing it if they changed it (I mean, hell. you excused Godzilla 97 in your last post which was pretty stupid, that film was terrible).

But yeah, arguing over Dragon Baaaall.
Title: Dragon Ball Movie: Ghostbusters' Ernie Hudson joins the cast

Optimus Prime was changed pretty big time, but he always is whenever they do something (remember in 1995 when he was a sports car? or how his robot in the 2007 movie looked like a trainwreck and nothing really like optimus prime?) ya just deal with it because it ain't important.

Also I never excused Godzilla, it is a piece of shit (like Transformers and like dbz will be(and in the cartoon and comic's case... already is)) I was saying that fans overreacted because it simply wasn't their godzilla. It's generally how movies work. King Kong was King Kong... he's a giant ape and the movie is about a giant ape, if they turned it into an alien it'd just be a remake of some 50s B-movie. Dragonball is about grown men making constipated grunts and tearing off each other's clothes. Designs change, it's not meant to be the source material, it's meant to be it's own thing. If it was just exactly following the original there'd be no point to it (admitedly the only point is to make money but they wouln't make as much if they only appealed to a minority).

also someone said that mario bros movie sucked. it was a really good movie dude, what are you talking about. it had great humor and spectacular action scenes and a brilliant cast. i really loved all the fungus stuff they put in to replace magic shrooms, like there is that one scene where the drive a car or something down a tunnel and then they fall but the fungus saves them maybe im talking complete bullshit but i recall this scene from the movie and that mario is the BEST PLUMBR IN BROKCLYN and luigi was going the wrong way in the sewers but mario had his specialised plumber years and decades of experience and he knew where to go.

- Three Monkeys
- My Magic/Waltz With Bashir

Basically, to explain a little. I'm not into Revolutionary Road, I don't think it's got what it takes to win Best Picture/Director, it just doesn't seem strong enough. Same with DiCaprio with Best Actor, there are far more stronger performances around. I'm getting the feeling soon The Wrestler will start to rise up for the big stakes, the trailer is now out and it does look fantastic. It's uncontroversial, very American and is getting some pretty sweet response already. Waltz with Bashir is in three different categories because it could go generally anywhere. People (like Mark Kermode) are insisting that it goes in the Best Picture category, breaking down this whole animation/film situation. It could easily go in foreign film too. I get the feeling Milk and Benjamin Button will find their way to the Best Picture category, though The Reader looks really great.

Best Actor, Mickey Rourke should win this, but both Benecio Del Toro and Sean Penn are giving amazing performances. DiCaprio is there because it will probably be there, and Brad Pitt might just turn up for his aging role. Supporting Actor is really really unlucky for Philip Seymour Hoffman who looks amazing in Doubt, but Heath Ledger is standing tall on that category. Brolin well deserves a spot too. Clooney was a bit of a joke addition, but it wouldn't surprise me if he did turn up.

Best Actress probably goes to Kate Winslet. Supporting Actress, the lamest category of them all, I just gave up on the final two and stole some from Strangeluv's list but I chose Kathy Bates, without any form of visual proof of her performance, just because she probably deserves another Oscar right about now.

Best Animation probably Wall-E, I doubt that even if Waltz with Bashir was in the category that it could beat the power of Wall-E. And finally, Foreign Film would hopefully go to Italy's Gomorrah, just because it's plain awesome.

I know you're probably going to reject most of this, with your crazy formulas for the Oscars and all that, but yeah. Just my thoughts. It's another pretty sweet year for films. Javier Bardem might creep in somewhere.

you've been making a lot of WHO CARES ABOUT THINGS posts lately and you really should cut it the fuck out. surprise, many people on GW watched DBZ when they were kids and wants to talk about it. double surprise, movie looks awful and apparently isn't at all like the original and people need to elaborate on why this is or isn't a good thing. you aren't any better for writing out about a page of why the movie industry should clap itself on the back for some movies and not others. there's no inherent maturity in thinking I BET BENJAMIN BUTTON WINS (WHO CARES IF ITS NOT OUT YET). you can say the movie will be awful or that people shouldn't expect good things from it but WHO CARES when you're busy writing imaginary lists no one could care about isn't the best petard to hoist.

That trailer was absolutely horrible.
This, and the overuse of CGI, shitty sound effects and wire work. I'm not really a fan of any anime but when I heard this movie was coming out I decided to look up some info so I would know what the fuck this is supposed to be and from my little understanding.. Didn't some guy like Piccolo make the Dragonballs not monks at a temple? And did he always have an airship, I thought Goku could fly and stuff?

At least it has some a couple of good looking woman in it.

It was Piccolo/Kami who made the dragonballs I'm pretty sure, but in a one shot movie like this, I can understand why they changed it, because it's a little too overcomplicated of a story to say that Piccolo made the dragonballs, split in two and then had a kid or however that goes.

Honestly there are so many things done very poorly that I don't think there is anyone happy with it. The people who enjoy Dragonball will probably not enjoy this, and the people who enjoy this probably wouldn't enjoy the real Dragonball. It kind of depresses me really.

They changed the name to Dragon Ball: Evoltion, if nobody had heard. I think it's a last ditch attempt to apologize for being completely unfaithful.

If you visit ANY site dedicated to this movie you will find that we are REALLY FUCKING EXCITED. There's a bunch of tiny shit that I'm not going to bother explaining, but one way or the other, for the most part, it is staying true to the general idea behind the story. But, being honest, you'd have to be a pretty hard fan to know how it correlates.

I would've preferred if they had done this in the 80's and Schwarzenegger would have played Goku and Stallone would have played Vegeta.

Well, it WAS true.

I was on wikipedia when I posted that, on Justin Chatwins page, and it had his upcoming movie or something as

Dragonball: Evolution  (2009)
Dragonball Z (2011)

but for some reason it's been changed.

I dunno, I'm pretty sure that's where I saw it.

Movies will always be geared towards the youth - and since the youth has no super strong attachment to the series, they'll take liberties. Sticking the franchise name on it was simply to build hype.

It'll probably be okay, something to see once and get pumped for all the action. It's just silly to pick it apart and see how badly it violates cannon.

I honestly don't think the trailer looks bad. It does look like a generic summer movie, but it's not the WORST LOOKING MOVIE EVER that some of you are making it seem. It's clear some money was put into the project, the CGI scenes look great to me.

My shitty taste in movies aside.....this movie is based off of a stupid, over the top, ridiculous Japanese anime, and Dragon Ball no less, the poster child for stupid, ridiculous, over the top Japanese anime. What were you expecting? The trailer would look MUCH WORSE if it was 100% faithful to the anime, which, from my memory, was largely pretty bad (endless series of episodes with absolutely nothing happening).

The movie definitely looks like Transformers mixed with random kung fu, but other than that, I don't see what the outrage is about.

I disagree! I don't see any reason they couldn't have cast a younger actor, and given it the playful feel the original Dragonball. IMO, the problem here is that the American audience saw Dragonball Z before Dragonball, and a lot of the people who watched Dragonball Z still don't know about Dragonball!
This movie obviously caters more to Dragonball Z fans, and in an attempt to target a larger audience, they had to mix and match parts of both. Speed Racer is good example of how this could be done a lot better, not that Speed Racer was so great. It was family friendly, and had violence, and adult/child humor.
Really, nobody can say much since it's not out, but things that have already been announced, like Master Roshi's character, could've been done perfectly well without alteration.

That wasn't the way I meant it, but regardless of what I meant, it was a stupid thing to say. The point is that that link goes to a thread that is over 100 pages in length. It has numerous links to outside sources of professional movie critics. So there should be no issue with using a movie forum for outside sources, especially considering most of the reviews are bad, hence the statement, "average of bad, dash of good".

yeah the sick comment was dumb but if you do actually click his link, most of the reviews linked in that thread are 1/5 and shit. AVERAGE OF BAD, DASH OF AVERAGE is how I'd describe it too.

The knee jerk reaction is HEH..LINKING TO A DBZ FORUM FOR REVIEWS but it's probably because it's the only place to find any sort of aggregate at the moment - metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes aren't tracking reviews yet.

I don't know, maybe you DIDN'T actually click his link before you posted. And the fact that Dark Angel is still a huge Dragonball fan for some reason beyond understanding.

hahahahha you guys!!! have a little faith.

HE EDITED HIS POST.

it used to say SOME GOOD SOME BAD. now it says AVERAGE BAD WITH A HINT OF GOOD which is pretty different (the first implies a 50/50 split).

I clicked the link, saw the majority bad in the OP, and guessed he was trying to argue the rest of the 100 pages were somehow a reversal of this trend (as calling like one positive review SOME GOOD is hilariously overexaggerating).

sorry I did not click through 100 pages though! I assumed he was talking about user reviews later in the thread since the OP was pretty clearly "nope movie sucks".

also it didn't make much sense when he said he linked one page instead of all the reviews as the OP was mostly all negative so I thought the rest of the 100 pages had some positive reviews but he had probably edited his post by this time!

edit: you will also notice there were some positive reviews on the first page, which confirmed my idea that he was using the thread to argue some positive reviews existed.

basically if anyone's to blame it's me for being too hella fast...

edit edit: now you guys are making me doubt if I read it right the first time. if only I hadn't cultivated such a lazy posting attitude and quoted him! we'll never know now...

I loved how they butchered everything that makes the franchise what it is, meaning huge muscles, lasers and explosions. I just watched this movie a few hours ago and it sucks  bowls.
they had everything wrong in Anime Goku's this young cheery uneducated kid that only gets angry when he sees his friends getting hurt or when he sees bad people doing bad stuff,In the movie Gokus some kid who goes to highschool asking his grandpa about advice on how to pick up girls and he has no belief in himself.

Another huge problem I had was Yamcha in this he didint even fight and at the end he has a gun man whats up with that!
I'm gonna spoil some of it I dint think anyone would care because this movie is so terrible.
On one part Goku's about to die and they use a Kamehameha to revive him (isn't the Kamehameha supposed to kill people)
They made the movie so predictable I mean he uses a Kamehameha to kill piccolo isn't he supposed to use that attack called penetrate where he does that really strong punch.

Well this movie sucks and that's my two cents.

Ok yeah I saw this last night, and it was so shit. Absolutely fucking shit. There were two funny moments in it, mainly when Bulma says her full name (Bulma Briefs) out loud to introduce herself, and I'm still wondering how long it took the actor to keep a straight face while saying it. The second funny moment is when Roshi explains the Kamehameha, cause he says it like this: Kahmee  hahmeehah.

The entire movie is shit, the effects for power blasts are ok but mainly just industry standard effects. I don't know much about the actual Dragonball manga and anime but from what I saw it was completely unlike the original series.

I also reckon they introduced too many characters, and Yamcha is basically just an enormous plot device to lead them to a dragonball. Other than that he is almost useless.
