Title: Contra 4
Post by: Grindie on November 15, 2007, 06:32:23 pm
Who's got it?

Fuck! This IS rock hard gaming at its finest! I know alot of you have problems with these one hit kill masocistic-em-ups, but I fucking love them! Been playing through Contra: Shattered Soldier again recently and Contra 4 is just MILES better! Miles better than Contra 3 and any other Contra. It's bloody gorgeous too. hah! I can't even get past level 2! Contra 4 just wants blood!

There's only one issue I have with it so far. It's okay getting PWNed by the game over and over until I learn like some stupid dog, but why does the Game Over screen have to laugh at me with it's stupid little jingle that I can't skip and just hit Continue"!? Well that and I keep pressing X to switch weapons instead of L (too used to Contra 3).

Many people believe that Contra 3 was the last great Contra game.  Those people didn't play Shattered Soldier (or didn't give it a fair shake) - a game which I am a huge advocate of.

That said, Contra 4 sounds terrific.  Thank you for letting us know it has come out.

Shattered Soldier was good, just not as good as Contra III imo.

4 may be better than both.

I just put this on my r4ds...
And holy shit this game is hard as hell. Like....IMPOSSIBLE. I can't even pass the first level. I love how hard mode says something along the lines of "You think you're the master of 2D action? Not anymore, you're not."

This game is pretty badass. I'm still trying to get used to the dual screens. I'm so focused on the bottom screen that I never see there's an enemy on the top screen shooting at me as well.
Definately get this.

Oh my god I didn't realize there even was a Contra 4. Seems like something I'll love.

Out of curiosity, what's with all the love for Shattered Soldier without even any acknowledgment of Neo Contra?

Well, Neo Contra wasn't a sidescroller and easily the worst Contra (still good and really fun in multiplayer) so maybe that's why.

Too bad that this is for the DS, otherwise I'd definitely get it. :(

Are we forgetting Contra: Hard Corps  :gwa:
But in all seriousness. I love the Contra series its just bloody impossible in my opinion. I'll probably pick this up but don't expect me to beat it any decade soon.

Neo Contra was for babies. It was piss easy. I still quite enjoyed it though.

Oh wait WTF.

All this time I thought Shattered Soldier was a non-side-scroller just like Neo Contra. Evidently the one time I thought I was playing a demo of Shattered Soldier it was actually Neo Contra (long before I actually bought Neo Contra).

Contra games are sooo fun, but so freaking difficult. I nearly wet myself when I saw the speed run of Contra 3. I'll have to pick this game up.

I already beated Contra 4, but in easy ):. The game seriously owns, unexpected things happened, and the game dificulty made me continue to play it until beating it.

You don't get to see every level on easy. I think there are 2 or 3 more on normal. I went through easy just to unlock the Challenges mode so I could get my Probotector suit.

Please tell me all the shitty problems in Shattered Soldier were fixed like the TRIAL AND ERROR gameplay?  Every Contra game is tough and there's no denying that but shattered soldier was RUINED by the fact that it had incredibly cheap moments that were impossible to dodge.  Every Contra game before that (except the shitty PS1 Contra) gives you context clues and hints as to how you're going to be attacked and if you fuck up, then that's because you suck but SS was just downright MEAN.  I like hard gameplay... I beat Ikaruga without dying... but cheap and frustrating gameplay is a big no no.

With that said, the best Contra is still Hard Corps.  The first boss cuts down a fucking building.  A FUCKING BUILDING.  What was the first boss of SS?  That stupid turtle thing with a face on it's back?  Fuck that.

That turtle thing was no doubt a homage to Contra 3. I like the nostalgic touch :)

And the flying alien things that try to pick you up when you're shimmying across that line.

Also, the first boss of Sin and Punishment destroys the entire Tokyo city in a river of demon blood.

Bloody great game, that.
