Hello guys. I'm working on an article about free MMOGs (Massively Multiplayer Online Games). It is intended to explain them to people unfamiliar with these kinds of games. At this point, I'm trying to gather opinions on what are the most popular free MMOGs that represent each subcategory. I would be very interested to hear your opinions. MMORPGs is by far the most prominent subcategory, so any other types of MMOGs would be great (MMORTS, MMOSG, etc) - just remember that they must be free to play. Thanks.

I heard RF online and Eve went f2p.
But as far as intentionally free mmos go... Maple Story is the most popular I guess. It's the only one i've ever seen that had commercials.
-
eve f2p?!
-
eve hasn't gone f2p.
RF has though.

aw fucks sake chainer
-
lol Maple Story. XD (not)

This game recently went f2p. It's really good graphically and apparently is a pretty fun MMO.
-
ps guys the only reason I unlocked this topic is because he wanted in-depth opinions so unless you start giving them its going to get locked again.
-
Thank you for your contributions.
EDIT: NinjaPirate, I'm finding the answers thus far useful.
EDIT: What is RF?
-
RF online was at one time a P2P games that has since now become a F2P game. While for a p2p game, RF was ecckkk. Its a very grinding game, but it has good pvp.
Most f2p games are very grindy and pretty much offer the same thing as any other does. While there will always be a few gems in the rough, these ones can be a little hard to find.
Some of the best would be: 2Moons, Sword of the New world that has another game(I don't get how that works at all. Its like there are different studios that bought the game and one puts it out for free and the other makes people pay..... very confusing), I heard Arch Lord is free, but I have never played it.
Most of the rest are just total grinds.

okay expert opinion time or whatever:
Normal MMORPGS:
-Perfect World (coming into Open Beta in English, in Chinese there was like more people playing this than World of Warcraft....)
-Sword of the New World
Room based MMO's:
-Gunbound
-Rakion
MMO Racing Game:
-Drift City
MMORTS (okay, this is room based too, but theres nothing like Planetside and free, it also isn't that popular):
-Savage: The Battle for Newerth
2D MMORPG:
-Maple Story
2D MMOSSS (Massively Multiplayer Online Side Scrolling Shooter):
-Dungeon & Fighter (note: This is a foreign game. It is also fucking amazing. It's like a fighting game (aka Street Fighter) but also with guns and a side scroller. It's crazy good!)
There's probably some others, but I'm kind of in a rush...hope you can find links (google is your friend), if you need any I'll go find them later!

Oh, I assumed RF was an acronym for a game that I couldn't figure out.
Thanks for your input DarkNecrid.
-
well it was "Rising Force Online" before, but I guess RF is cooler
also ArchLord is like Guild Wars im pretty sure now, F2P after buying software.
There have been very few GOOD free mmo's I have ever played, and they usually die out fast, 2Moons is pretty cool, and I guess this Sword of the New World game seems cool.....

Nope its completely F2P now. (Archlord that is)

I played Maplestory about 2 years ago, got to level 56 and stopped.
Pro's:
-It's pretty fun to play with friends
-Has nice, fairly balanced classes
-Has good looking graphics
-Has a nice overall 2d engine
-Has pretty nice looking equipment/weapons
-Has flashy and fun skills
Con's:
-Extremely early grind
-Extremely boring grind(shooting the same exact thing thousands of times on the same map for the most effective grinding)
-Hackers(Hackers would bypassed the Gameguard and pass it on to script kiddies that continued multiplying into the thousands. Worst part was it took a hacker an insignificantly small amount of time to get into higher levels)
-NO PVP(That's right, absolutely no PVP)
-Only 2 instances, unlike WOW(People would literally wait for hours to get into the place where instances took place, constantly clicking as fast as they could on the entrace to get in, and once you've reach a certain level, you couldnt get in anymore for easy levelling and items.)
Overall:
Don't play it, it's a trap.
-
its a trap as much as any mmo is a trap. all mmos have the same reward: fun. if you dont have fun, dont play it, but that doesnt mean no one should.
-
archlord?I've heard that its now free.
-
When it comes to playing the game after buying it from the store, I'd suggest
1. Guild Wars
2. Diablo 1 & 2
But completely free regardless of going to the store, I'd suggest...
1. RuneScape

I've been playing Fiesta Online lately.

Been a while since I played Dungeon & Fighter but it was pretty great. Just stopped because of the language barrier.
Sword of the New World (Granado Espada) is the only MMO I've been really interested in for a while. It's pretty good, especially for a free Korean MMORPG.
-
aw fucks sake chainer
It must have been a promo or something.
As for Rising Force (is that really what's called?) I tried the game out during one of their open Betas... and the only thing in english was "RF Online". I dropped the game then.. and that's all I remember it being called. I never looked into it when they brought it over.
-
Be glad you did, it was a grindey MMO.

lol
pretty sure Chainer doesn't care about grind, he plays L][
-
I stopped grinding years ago. It is such a little part of MMOs... I'm glad it filters out the morons.

There's more than leveling grind, y'know.
-
Yeah, I like Sword of the New World just a bit. I play it occassionally. It's all I know about free MMOs but I recommend it.
-
Do NOT play Archlord. It sucks and the GMs are non existant.
-
There's more than leveling grind, y'know.
You fail.
-
I can't stand grindey MMO's. I don't mind it but i can't stand it when its excessive. I prefer to get my main source of XP from missions and then some from grinding.

I've been playing Anarchy Online since June. Its a 6 year old game, but in my opinion its decent, a HUGE step up from RO(Then again, most MMOs are). The base game with the add on that enables Tower Wars, which is something along the lines of your guild controlling an area, then building turrents and towers there, then the area alternates between being PvP enabled against people from other factions and all out PvP against everyone but your guild over the course of the day. I have yet to participate in it myself though, so my info could be a bit off. In addition, some of the harder areas are PK Enabled, so not only are you fighting the boss and stuff, but you gotta keep on your toes 'cause the other factions could show up and pick you off and then take out the boss.
As for grinding, it boils down to either doing missions, which are basically like quests that you get from a terminal and feature enemies that get harder, but yield more EXP the higher level you are and the higher you set the mission difficulty bar, or old fashion grinding of overworld or instance enemies. You can also get EXP from tradeskilling. It takes a bit of work to get good at tradeskilling, but like in any other MMO, being able to make that set of armor not sold by an NPC is worth the trouble and what you had to do to get the components.
However, the game is supposedly going totally pay again in January. Long time players theorize that they are most likely going to extend the free play period again, as they allegedly make a nice sum off the video and picture ads you see around. While out of place, the picture ads are tolerable, but the video ads tend to weirdly glitch that you can hear them, even if you are nowhere near one until you change maps.
