You can't like Metal and not like Judas Priest.
-
Into the Moat (More techcore-ish, with some dark jazzy passages.) http://youtube.com/watch?v=y1apIcQeBo0
Sikth (Has a very cool groove feel, the tapping at 1:50 is amazing)
http://youtube.com/watch?v=ARTvoqqn8U8
Also. DS's list pretty much kicks-ass, so anything on there
Specially Meshuggah and Ephel Duath.
EDIT: Anyone hear colors? Its pretty much amazing.
-
here i uploaded the ocean song to show how awesome they are
http://avalanchestudios.net/ds/music/muzak/207-IV._Mesoproterozoic__Stenian_-_Mount_Sorrow.mp3
also sikth are very cool props for recommending them!

You can't be serious and not be an idiot.
-
Shit, I can't believe I forgot the Faceless
I HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU CHECK OUT THE FACELESS
http://youtube.com/watch?v=Lu0LHrvvHQU
http://youtube.com/watch?v=0m3K3jtXAKo
http://youtube.com/watch?v=3dRccuNlwr8
don't mind the video, just listen to the tunes, but seriously, this band is awesome.
-
Jesu is not metal.
You should pick up some stuff from By The End Of Tonight. Instrumental metal(kinda), the way I like it. :)
-
At the moment I like these bands the best:
Vintersorg (Solens Rotter was awwesome) and Borknagar
Novembre (I'm interviewing them this week)
Orphaned Land
The Black Dahlia Murder (Buying new cd soon)
Tool
The Crown,At the Gates,In Flames, Dark Tranquilliy
Learning to Tolerate black metal a little more.
Please lets not argue about what is metal.
-
btbam are fucking awesome
what is btbam
Tool (yeah i count them as metal shoot me)
:fogetguns: :2guns: :gunsdude:
Anyway
If you want super progressive metal try Spastic Ink or Death. If you want the best death metal ever get The Crown's Deathrace King (currently zoo'ed).
-
what is btbam
is this a joke
-
according to google it is between buried and me but for all i know they could be a metalcore band
edit: in other words give me reasons to check them out
-
they are like
arty prog metal i guess. or maybe they are metalcore, but i dont think so. metalcore is like POP SCREAMING METAL (not emo) right? BTBAM is more akin to prog/art death.
i hate genres. whatever!
they are fucking fantastic.
just listen to one of their albums would you like me to zoo them?
-
Sounds like a good idea. I'll check it later when I get home!
-
what is btbam

I couldnt remember what it stood for either. The Crowns vocalist is pretty good!, although his newest project isn't that special. (One man army and the undead quartet).
Also you you guys heard about At the Gates reforming to do shows? Pretty exciting.
-
Jesu is not metal.
You should pick up some stuff from By The End Of Tonight. Instrumental metal(kinda), the way I like it. :)
Sure if you decide to disregard their s/t and Silver. Even Conqueror has some metal elements.

I hope you are kidding when you say Jesu is not metal.
But, I would suggest the following:
Psyopus
Breather Resist
The Chariot
Destroy Destroy Destroy
Into Eternity
Ion Dissonance
Johnny Truant
A Life Once Lost ( HIGHLY SUGGESTED )
Mouth of the Architect ( HIGHLY SUGGESTED AS WELL )
-
ok DP i am zooing some albums of theirs right now (two most recent + oddball cover album which i personally enjoyed a lot).
@everybody else: there are bands here I know and bands here I dont! I will check these guys when i get a chance this week (today/tomorrow i am fucking busy like a hooker simile.
-
I don't listen to metal near as much as I used to, because after a while I realized a lot of it was really uninspired despite the muscicians being very proficient.
I still regularly listen to:
Tiamat
Samael
Riverside
Fates Warning
Queensryche
Savatage
Threshold
Kamelot
None of them are really similar to BtBaM but some of them are pretty progressive (FW and Queensryche FOUNDED progressive metal afterall) and some of the others on the list are pretty unique like Tiamat and Samael.
-

As much as I hate to admit it, BTBAM is indeed a metalcore (metal with hardcore influences, or vice versa) band.
Their self-titled and The Silent Circus are excellent examples of some of their hardcore sound. If you want to hear a good metalcore band, not the generic shit thats being passed as metalcore nowadays (As I lay Dying, Kill Switch Engage, etc.), Listen to Botch.
However, alot of people (including me) would argue that the hardcore influences on Alaska and Colors are almost non-existent, making them more of a prog-metal band. But thats just my outlook on it.
EDIT: Also, check out Behold... the Arctopus, some would argue that they are to technical, others that they sound like 3 year olds banging their instruments.
-
Sorry, I have a thing about Bay Area thrash, so I listen to quite a few metal bands. Mostly Megadeth, Metallica (I still maintain that Kill 'Em All and Ride the Lightning are fantastic albums, whatever may be said of their later material), Heathen and some Anthrax, though I do dabble a bit in other metal-ish styles. Type O Negative (recommended listening for all), Sonata Arctica (same), Iron Maiden, Diamond Head, and X Japan (and again) are probably my favourites.
Ooh, I listen to a lot less metal than I thought. Probably because of embarrassing pictures like that one. I've always cringed at that kind of metal fan, sorry if any of you guys are like that!
EDIT: Oh yeah man I forgot The Sword, they're pretty good too, I recommend them.
-
I hope you are kidding when you say Jesu is not metal.
They are not metal. As DS said, yeah, they do have a lot of elements of metal, but they are not metal. MAYBE post-metal, whatever that is.
-

No, I said Conqueror has elements of metal, their s/t is definitely metal imo.

Let's not argue about what is metal and what isn't. This always happens to Metal topics and they end up going downhill, fast.
:)

yeah
less dumbassing more talking about metal

Exsecratus was found by O. Mattila in the early spring 2004. Soon N. Hartikainen joined the band. After a few quick member changes, the first whole line-up was completed. During the following autumn E. Vihma and A. Päivinen were found to complete the new style of Exe.
Soon after new year '05 M. Niemelä took his place behind the drums and the name eXsecratus was decided to be the new name of the band.
In spring '05 Mr. Niemelä left the band due to musical and personal differences. Soon to leave was also E. Hartikainen because of his military service.
During the summer and autumn '05 new songs were made, and in early '06 T. Kauhajärvi became a fulltime member even before his first practice session with the band..
Later in the same winter ex-Elenium and Draugnim drummer J. Raatikainen joined the group to boost the effort to make it as a real, powerful and fast metal band.
In spring '06 E. Silvennoinen came along and filled the missing gap in the melody department. So Exe became stronger and made their first demo 19.8.-1.9.06, which was named execute.
On october -06 E.Vihma and A.Päivinen left the band due to personal difficulties between them and the rest of the band. The following day L-M.Hovila filled the gap in lead-singing department. And less than week from that, K.Rautiainen became a serious candidate for the soon-to-be-found solo-guitarist.
And so Exsecratus returned to the rehersal-place and started to kick some newbie-ass. Not too long after that, Exsecratus as a fully functional metal-regiment once more and rose to the stages again in early december -06. In january -07 Exsecratus did their first tour around Finland with Ensiferum. Five cities in five days, and it was a ride worth wile.
In March ´07 Exsecratus did their first gig outside Finland. St.Petersburg accepted the band with arms wide open.
A week after that Exsecratus and K.Rautiainen went separate ways. The desicion was extremely difficult, but things weren´t working the way they were supposed to.
After few weeks of mourning, Tony Hentilä was announced as the new guitar player / back-up singer. This young fellow seemed perfect to fill the gap K.Rautiainen had left. And also his singing brought new dimensions in the clean parts of Exsecratus.
...And so the tale continues.

I bought Conqueror at the store because I was told they were post-rock ish and I heard them mentioned a couple of times here...I fell in love <3<3<3
-
Yeah, Jesu is fantastic. I like their newest EP Lifeline and their split with Eluvium a lot.
-
sundown / sunrise > lifeline (both are great though)!
jesu are awesome indeed
did anyone dl the ocean song or going to check them out??
-
the only bands that I listen to regularly anymore that have anything at all to do with metal are
Agalloch
Black Sabbath
Green Carnation
ISIS
Novembre
Opeth
Pain of Salvation
Red Sparrowes
Tool
Ulver
and I occassionally listen to like Blind Guardian or Dream Theater for old times sake
-
Man, I don't care about what anyone says about Killswitch Engage, but Howard Jones has the sexiest man voice ever. Symphony X is quite possibly my favorite progressive metal band ever, I suggest anything off their album Paradise Lost. Nevermore is pretty good too in my opinion, they have an amazing guitarist but the vocalist gets annoying really fast. Dream Theater and Liquid Tension Experiment if you're into old school prog metal. If you prefer death metal-ish stuff, Quo Vadis (the drumming in Silence Calls the Storm is absolute class), Bury Your Dead, Arsis (anything on a Celebration of Guilt has amazing riffing) and Parkway Drive. Im also very fond of Blind Guardian and Demons & Wizards (ewww power metal I know I know).
I also couldn't help but notice that Strapping Young Lad and Protest The Hero are both relatively well known Canadian metal bands.... well, in Ontario anyway. Check out 3 Inches of Blood and Into Eternity sometime.
-
Can't really get into Into Eternity (only heard a few songs though) but I dont really dig the high vocals.
-
Vintersorg is pretty good his first two albums weren't as progressive and his last album wasn't that great, but you might like the ones in between.
-
I like ISIS, Tool, any Opeth song that doesn't have harsh vocals, and a few Pain of Salvation songs. and Black Sabbath, if they count
-
I've heard Pelican is a lot like Isis but without the vocals, but I have never heard them myself actually.
Edit: downloading some pelican now
-
sundown / sunrise > lifeline (both are great though)!

yeah I remember when you sent me to the on irc. I s hould listen to them as they were quite excellent
-
THATS NOT ATARI DUCK IN COVER!
-
I'm pretty in to Post Metal, like ISIS, Rosetta, Pelican, and Cult of Luna. I also like some other Metal band like Mastodon, Gojira, and Tool. Most of the stuff I listen to is pretty progy, so if you like that kind of stuff, check out the bands I mentioned.

you need to listen to *shels
-
check out Beyond Twilight
ridiculously pretentious metal with progressive elements
For The Love of Art and the Making is awesome (over 40 tracks of metal randomness)
-
Dream Theater has been a huge influence on the prog. metal scene for the past fifteen years, I'm going to second that recommendation. Their best albums are Images and Words and Metropolis, Pt. 2: Scenes From a Memory. I haven't really listened to LTE, but they are essentially Dream Theater so you probably can't go wrong! Lacuna Coil is also pretty metal (Earlier stuff only). I'd recommend them too.
Good mainstream stuff:
-Slayer
-Iron Maiden
-Judas Priest
-
Pagan's Mind.
-
Metal I listen to (if you don't like it, I don't care. I don't feel like arguing over my music preferences):
In Flames
Soilwork
Avenged Sevenfold
Disturbed
Demon Hunter
Mushroomhead
Spineshank
Trivium (Old Stuff)
Tool
One Minute Silence
8 Foot Sativa
40 Below Summer
Children of Bodom
36 Crazyfists
Atreyu
Hypocrisy
There's a lot more, but I'm not home and can't think of any right now.
-
I listen to a lot of metal and it's getting even worse since I started DJing at my college radio station (half of us are metalheads hahaha) and it's getting even worse now since I got promoted to being the assistant of the guy that makes the contract with labels so we get our albums and such...
A lot of you seem to really like post-rock/post-metal/atmospheric sludge metal or however you wish to call it so check all of these bands out they're really great.
Battle of Mice (really unique with female vocals)
Cult of Luna
Callisto
Gantz
ISIS
Minsk
Mouth of the Architect
North
Giant
Other Side of the Sky
Vi (heavier stuff)
Vanessa Van Basten
I've heard that Baroness were pretty good but I haven't checked them out yet. Besides that I'm a big fan of doom metal and some black metal bands. Such as:
Agalloch
Anathema
Electric Wizard
The Fall of Every Season
The Foreshadowing (GREAT BAND)
How Like A Winter
Katatonia
My Dying Bride
Swallow The Sun
Emperor
Alcest
Amesoeurs
Anorexia Nervosa
Deathspell Omega
old Dimmu Borgir
Gotherfall
Mayhem
and many many more.

Woah that's a bit random, this is a new zealand band. My friend joined briefly as the drummer and I've seen them three times.
-
you need to listen to *shels
Man you are really plugging them lately. I need to check them out.

I'm going to toss a few rarer names that are not mentioned much (if at all) around here I think are worth checking if you're into metal.
Let's start with Melodic Growl Metal band "Eternal Tears of Sorrow". It's awesome. They released a few albums in late 90's and early 2000 and then broke (in 2001 I believe). Last year the band decided to do a come back and released a new album (Before the Bleeding Sun). If you like epic, melodic, death, doom, black, progressive metal you'll find bit of all in EToS' production. Good starter song would be Prophetian from their 2001 album A Virgin and a Whore (which is also their best album so far imo).
If you prefer more classic hard rock and progressive style metal you might like "Twilightning". They've released 3 albums so far, which I all find extremely good. Very nice good choice for car music imo.
And last, "Masterplan". A prog (power and heavy prog) metal band. Their first album is full 10 / 10 material. The later albums aren't as good but still worth listening to. Should be good choice for anyone who likes progmetal.
-
I'm personally a fan of Symphonic, Progressive, and Power metal genres. Sometimes you get a bit of cheese mixed in with it all but for the most part you get some pretty epic and sublime melodies. My personal favorites include:
Pain of Salvation
Sieges Even
Symphony X
Beyond Twilight
Green Carnation
Nightwish
Within Temptation
Epica
Nocturnal Rites
Kamelot
Sonata Arctica
Circus Maxima
Serenity
Vanishing Point
Blind Guardian
Honestly I have not been able to find any other genres that evoke such an interesting and epic sound.

How can you be a fan of Symphonic metal and not mention Therion. Blasphemy.
-
Do you guys think metal in general is getting more popular? or in the states? I keep hearing about bands like Behemoth, Dragonforce and Dimmu making it into the billboard chart.
-
probably because their last album was such a terrible mess
but I agree, Therion are certainly one of the best symphonic metal merchants out there
-

Behemoth made it to the charts? wow! Dragonforce is simply 'cos their really really cheese... Dimmu's last album was such trash man (well their more recent albums were all meh imo).
I finally checked out Sonata Arctica and wow... It's the only power metal band that really got me man. I've been listening to them A LOT. Unia seems a little harder to get into depending on the song though. Ecliptica was very very good especially Fullmoon. But Unia is growing on me so much... Under Your Tree, For The Sake of Revenge.... wow
-

o_O I forgot to mention them (although I left out a ton of bands I like but aren't as significant). I'm a personal fan of Secret of the Runes - great album.

Ya, Sonata Arctica is pretty damn awesome. The first two albums (Ecliptica and Silence) are great power metal albums. Very melodic and catchy. The next two (Winterheart's Guild and Reckoning Night) are pretty bland and boring compared to the first two. Unia, however, is just totally awesome. It's less powerful but more heavier and the tunes are just pure eargasm. I really hope Sonata Arctica continues the style they had in Unia in the future! Unia is one of my favorite albums ever.

Agreed. Although I do like My Seleene and White Pearls, Black Oceans. Unia was great - best album so far. It took me forever to love though, I actually hated it at first.
-
I used to listen symphonic/power metal a lot, but now I'm just full of it. I've really started to like some 80's/early 90's metal..
I just got Loudness - On The Prowl, ..now I find Loudness pretty.. crappy, apart from awesome guitar riffs and solos, but they have 2 albums with Mike Vescera in vocals and I just love them.
If anyone could point some bands with similar sound, I'd appreciate it. I know this "sound" is very common in that particular era, still..
EDIT: Also some melodic death metal would be nice too, I really like stuff sucha as Children of Bodom, Wintersun and Suidakra..

Ah ha just picked up The Dethalbum by Dethklok (lol virtual band). It's so fricken epic! DETHKLOK RULES!
-

No. No they don't.
-
yeah metalocalypse is a moderately funny show but dethklok blows
-
I think that Dethklok is fun to listen to, but I'm also pretty sure the point of them is to sound like crap.
-
Ah ha just picked up The Dethalbum by Dethklok (lol virtual band). It's so fricken epic! DETHKLOK RULES!
There is nothing epic about Dethklok, sorry. :fogetshifty:
-
Sorry, but Hatredcopter, Thunderhorse, Awaken, Duncan Hills Coffee Jingle, and The Lost Vikings are awesome (even if parody). Stfu.
-
Rofl, like whatever you want - I don't care. I was more-or-less pointing out that epic is clearly not the adjective to describe Deathklok. They just aren't.
-
COUCH!!!
NEW PROTEST SONG!
Seriously, PtH put up a new song from fortress, its pretty fucking ridiculously good.
No joke.
EDIT: Not trying to spam or anything, its just he mentioned Pth in the first post, so I figured he might enjoy that little bit of news.
-
HMM i am not sure what i think about it. It is cool that its significantly different than Kezia.
<edit>you can hear excerpts of Bloodmeat here
<object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/RoAkLCbCiew&rel=1"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/RoAkLCbCiew&rel=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>
this album might be good! I will have to listen to it thoroughly once it comes out/leaks to develop a real opinion though cause I hated kezia at first.

Or watch the Live version of Blood Meat here ;)

It sounds very sikth influenced at some points
Apparently they've really been digging SiKth.

Hehe, more like (or should I say "fixed"):
