I hardly ever go to the movies. Generally, in the span of a year, I'll be excited about three or four movies but I'll usually only see about one or two. 2007, however, has been pretty good, IMO, and I've actually been to see a lot of movies. (though I can't list them off the top of my head) Well, the point of this topic is that there is another movie coming out soon that I'm pretty excited about, but that I didn't see a topic for.
The movie is called "Juno," and it's essentially about a teenage girl who gets pregnant. Sounds bland, but I think the way the story writers dealt with the subject matter is really original. It stars Ellen Page from ""Hard Candy" as the mother-to-be, and Michael Cera as the father. Maybe I'm a softie, but I'd really like to see this movie. Unfortunately, it comes out on December 5th, but only in select theaters which means New York and Los Angeles :(

So, is anyone else excited to see this movie, or have you heard bad things about it? I just found out about it this morning from Very Short List.
EDIT: IMDb (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0467406/)
-
Ellen Page still looks like a 13 year old boy.
-
I've heard only good things about it and I would be considering going to watch it if it wasn't for the fact that it is released here some time in march and the fact that it has to be something extraordinary if I'm going to watch a romantic comedy in the cinema. All that said though, I'm kinda looking forward to seeing it. It looks like it has all the smarts of a good film and all the dumb of a funny one.
I've also heard really good things about the performances in the film so despite not having seen it and although I only watch action movies I can say that if you have any thought of watching it. Please go watch this instead of those really bad ones of the same "genre".
-
I actually had tickets to go to a pre-release showing of this film like a month ago but I couldn't go. Had to work. I REALLY want to see this. George Michael + Michael Bluth? C'mon.
-
Well. I liked Ellen Page in Hard Candy, and I think in general I'm okay with her acting (or maybe I just think she is hot??? I cannot even differentiate between the two anymore). I'd probably like her more if the other thing I'd seen her in hadn't been X-MEN where she was running from the Juggernaut, but whatever! Even if I'm unsure of most things about her beyond the fact that I would totally hit that (LOL), I'm a huge fan of Michael Cera and Jason Bateman from Arrested Development, so I'd probably see it just for them. I watched the trailer like... last week, and liked it. Her character seemed a little SNARKY but whatever, I thought it looked pretty good. I'll probably see it.
-
wow i think that looks horrifically boring :(
i dont mind movies like this but they need to have someone really funny in the lead (or really hot and she isnt it for me)
-
Hard Candy was terribly, terribly overrated, imo. Also, this movie should be good.

I thought it was a really good movie. What did people say about it that made it so terribly, terribly overrated? I haven't really heard anything or read any reviews.
-
This looks pretty good! Gives me a Garden State feeling, and I really liked Garden State so. Ill have to check this out
-
This movie looks amazing, maybe I'm just a sucker, and the reviews for it so far have been really good. Plus, Ellen Page is really funny.
Unfortunately it's still on limited release!
-
so it turns out this was alright. i think i generally find overly snarky characters a little tiresome and so that was the case with ellen page's character, but the movie was mostly pretty good. it kind of makes me wonder what michael cera is going to do with his life when he gets too old to play awkward teenage roles, though.
-
do we get to see conception of said baby? i was horribly disappointed when there was no pedo stuff in hard candy.
I hear the soundtrack to this film is horrible... Page is a good actress but I think she's paired with fucking lame male leads, so I think I'll hold off until I can rent this on DVD and have a home date with some feel good girl.
-
I saw Juno a couple days ago and loved every part of it. As for the soundtrack, if you don't like cute acoustic songs with amateur vocals, then you definitely won't like it, but I loved it and I think it worked very well.
And there actually is more pedophile stuff in Juno! Gaah! More hard candy in this movie.
-
i hope michael cera takes a role as a serial killer when he gets older.

it's alright. it sort of goes along with the feel of the movie, i think. it's mostly just a lot of belle and sebastian/the softies-sounding shit, though, which isn't terrible but kind of gets pretty old. it's funny because she's like a superbig fan of punk in the movie so you'd expect to hear more of that. also, how do you dislike cera and bateman!
-
Well, I'm a sucker from anything even remotely related to Arrested Development, so seeing Bateman and Cera in the previews for this film gave me a legitimate boner. I'd love to see it, but apparently Dallas has firmly cemented itself as a cultural wasteland in the three or so months that I spent away from it, so I might have to drive unnecessarily far to see films like this. Oh well.
-
also, how do you dislike cera and bateman!
I don't dislike them exactly, I'm just saying that in Page's past films she's never been paired well with anyone... I'd hate to see her turn out as an actress that doesn't play well with others.
-
I'm seeing this in two hours, and am very excited. Also, from what I hear from a friend, the music in this movie is fantastic. And how could it not be, with lyrics like this:
"We sure are cute for two ugly people"
"Up up down down left right left right B A start
Just because we use cheats doesn't mean we're not smart"
"You shook a little turd out of the bottom of your pants"
-
I just saw it a few hours ago. It was pretty good but not as good as I had expected. The movie needed more Michael Cera and J.K. Simmons (Jonah Jameson from Spiderman). I fucking hated all that supposed "teenage lingo" that they stuffed into the movie. Nobody talks like that and I hate it when movies portray teenagers that way. You could tell it was written by somebody who has no idea how teenagers speak. Other than that, the characters were pretty believable. Page and Cera are both great actors.
The music was pretty cute. Nothing I'd listen to on a regular basis, but it fit the whole "teenage" theme I guess.
The movie was good overall and I loved the ending. I felt that it wrapped everything up very well. Definitely worth seeing.
I'm so glad Bateman told Page he was leaving Garner. Had that not happened, it would have turned into an awkward sexual situation that I just didn't feel like watching that early in the day. Also, I really thought the scene with Page giving birth was amazing. Looking at her face and hair dripping with sweat made me appreciate life and what women have to go through.
-
This movie was absolutely fantastic. And, I thought the lingo fit, because it was... Part of who Juno WAS. Such a great movie. Will probably top my best of 2007 list for movies.

Nobody says "honest to blog," "cavalier," and "wizard." I understand she's a teenager and yeah, teens have their own lingo, but they could have made it more realistic.
-
This movie was only good because of Ellen Page.
(second only to Hard Candy)
-
Nobody says "honest to blog," "cavalier," and "wizard." I understand she's a teenager and yeah, teens have their own lingo, but they could have made it more realistic.
Yeah... Exactly. It's NOT typical of a teenager. Because she's not a typical teenager.
-
Yeah... Exactly. It's NOT typical of a teenager. Because she's not a typical teenager.
Right, but her best friend was the one who said "honest to blog" and Michael Cera also used "wizard" once or twice. It wasn't just Page's character. Her character was fine in comparison to her friend.
-
Sorry for bump, but
I just watched this flick and it's really really beautiful, and I wanted to see what other people think of it because right now it's just Sarhan complaining about the lingo.
Also Sarhan most people I know that are different from stereotypes have their own lingo which is extremely area-based. Like even between two neighbouring schools the lingo would be different, in the different part of the city there'd almost be a different language! So I think you're pretty wrong cowboy!
Anyway the film really brought a tear in my eye at the end. Ellen Page is so adorable in this and when Cera just walks in and lies next to her after her giving birth I just... :,) so beautiful...
-

Yeah, I was going to bring this exact point up, because I know there's a lot of local lingo and phrases between my rl friends that I usually don't use online just because I know people wouldn't understand it or whatever.
Like I think it's weird you called him cowboy.
Also, this movie was pretty cute. I don't know if it was really oscar material, but it was definitely funny and "feel-good" so no real complaints.
-
I thought this movie was really nice - that about sums it up for me. It was a nice departure from the rest of the Best Picture nominees and I think if last year wasn't such a great year for movies then it might've grabbed the top prize (even if it would've been the 'cute' vote that got it there).
Page and Cera worked really well together (although I also don't know what he'll do after the awkward teenage roles) and the Garner/Bateman relationship was presented really well and developed (revealed?) throughout the movie.
I thought the lingo was a little odd at times but a lot of the stuff they said was pretty normal for the characters and it certainly didn't detract for me.
Off the top of my head it'd be my third or fourth favourite movie released last year. Certainly the most feel good that I saw.
-
When I watched this movie a couple months ago it annoyed the crap out of me. I can't believe Michael Cera has been cast as Scott Pilgrim. Jesus Christ.
-
i saw this movie with the expectation that everybody loves it. it is weak and is highly overrated. at BEST i would give this movie a 5/10.
the name drops became annoying. it constantly focuses on making "hip" teens feel cool because they know of the current or have heard of semi-past pop culture. the characters were, for the most part, the same. everyone was witty. most of the jokes were forced. its great if you are early teens and want to quote something in front of your friends to sound funny- otherwise the dialog was absolutely atrocious. the indie girl with guitar image was boring - likewise the "original" music.
for example the hamburger phone; why does she insist you know she has a hamburger phone - she criticizes everyone when they pay attention even after shes been crying for attention. she stuffs her face, wrappers cluttered around her, questioning everyone why they stare at her - despite the fact she is eating in the trophy case with her belly intentionally showing.
it definitely should not be ranked 129 in the greatest movies of all time. the story can be summed up in a minute, hell, watch the trailer and you won't need to see this movie. everything was predictable. if you are 11-15 years old and you like to watch two hours of its irresponsible american teens thinking they are clever without actually portraying cleverness, then you might like this movie.
neglecting the impact/consequences of teenage pregnancy, childbirth and the surrender of newborn children once again. its okay to get pregnant at age 16, and it can be (uneventfully) funny too.
-
^It's a bit much to say everyone was witty, and just because the story is (relatively, there's things you can't tell from the trailer for sure) predictable doesn't make it less enjoyable.
It's not a GROUND BREAKING EARTH SHATTERING EPIC and it's no TWBB or NCFOM but it was certainly enjoyable and just...nice?. I didn't go in with high expectations so perhaps that made it easier to swallow.

absolutely agreeing with this. I hope Diablo Cody goes back to stripping instead of this weaksauce shit.
hey guess what we're totally and completely wacky! let's talk about Dario Argento! and play the Moldy Peaches and fucking Belle and Sebastian because while obstensibly the movie is about Iggy Pop, the soundtrack is (and I'm not a homophobe at all but) the gayest shit on earth.
http://www.bigempire.com/filthy/juno.html
Fake cutesy is the perfect soundtrack for the fake cutesy Juno. It's like spending an hour-and-a-half with some sort of artificial intelligence device that has the ability to perfectly articulate emotions that nobody ever actually feels. It's well-spoken, hyper-wordy, and a fraud.
Maybe Juno is supposed to be some sort of fantasy. If it is, I don't get it. I don't know why anybody would fill up these kids with all these words just to make them sound like bad 40-something pop-culture book writers and commentators on shitty E! programs. I also don't understand why anyone would want so many characters to talk the same way, all like a bad screenwriter, who is way too in love with her own writing. And I don't get why everyone in the movie is so fucking impressed with Page when she'd be almost unbearable to be around for more than 15 minutes. I think I have an idea, though: because writer/stripper Diablo Cody is that pleased with herself, and that into showing off. It ain't her boobs this time, but it's as synthetic as most strippers'.
-
This is one of my favorite movies of all time. I absolutely loved every minute of it. :)
-
Ellen Page got on my nerves and I found the movie very boring. I couldn't wait for it to end, I went because I had heard good things. A lot of people seem to like it, so it's probably just me!
-

Heaps of people hate it, just like any 'big' movie.
-
I'm trying very hard to watch this movie but that one bitch just said HONEST TO BLOG and oh my god I don't know if I can do this anymore.
edit: Jesus Christ I'm only 7:33 into this movie and this shit is fucking awful oh my god I hate this SHE JUST SAID I AM FO SHIZ UP THE SPAT OR SOMETHING RRRRRRGH
-
ahahaha i guess i posted in this topic and
i don't know i did not find it as intolerable as others. i didn't LOVE it or anything but uh, i don't know, i guess i found it pretty acceptable (re: did not walk out or leave in disgust). it is all of those things people have said, and incredibly irritating because of it, but at the same time it's pretty believable because maaaan i know no shortage of quasi-witty teens just parading around looking for witty banter. it makes me feel old, realizing how young and stupid they are, though.
i guess it helps that i saw it on the first night it came out, and didn't really know it would BLOW UP or get nominated for best picture or whatever (ridiculous notion, btw). there wasn't anything i really found especially outstanding about it, but i guess i just wasn't especially offended, either. it's funny, because i usually have a much lower tolerance for pandering gratuity than most people, and i'm so fucking sick of IRONIC TEENS, so you'd think i'd abhor this as much as you guys do!
-
yeah i didn't really hate it. i understood how hard they were trying and i am in no way saying i enjoy the home-skillets and honest to blogs but it didn't grate on me.
and jason bateman's character was really sad to me, i guess. i mean most of the movie was just oooooh look, isn't it precious? but i liked jason bateman in this.
-
I didn't think this film was bad at all! I think that there are a couple of good aspects about the film, or at least that I found interesting:
1) It does a good job portraying the teen age and how teenagers are impetuous, unrespectful and believe they're always in the right. I might sound like an old man, but I really feel identified with the character in these aspects, because I was similar when I was younger lol.
2)Although I don't believe Jason Bateman is a very good actor, I thought his character is very well done in the sence that it really represents the kind of people that are lost in their lives, and whose wants sometimes clash with the expectations of society, which leads them to do rushed things................ (can somebody understand that?)
3) I really believe that Ellen Page does an OUTSTANDING work in this film. Many people might say its really annoying and stuff, but I believe its hard to negate her acting is very well done.
Well yeah. That's it. Although, to be sincere, if you want to me to say what film I thought was the best of 2007, I would say The Life of the Others by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck (wich was released in 2007 in non-geraman speaking countries). Now that was a film I thought was ABSOLUTELY Beatiful and I would recomend to everybody.
-

I was REALLY annoyed at Ellen Page at first too, and during the first 15 minutes I was wondering wether I was gonna finish watching it (I was eating at the time tho, so I needed entertainment and kept on watching) but man, she really, really grew on me. I think she does a great job of portraying teenagers, that often have this gimmicky shell on the outside to hide what's going on inside. And she really lets you know from time to time that it's a shell. By the end of the flick I was almost in love with her. She was so... NOT PERFECT, if you know what I mean. Her flaws are really attractive and adorable.

I really wanna see that movie. I thought Ulrich Muhe was fantastic in Funny Games, and the whole concept just sounds great. From memory it won an Oscar last year though didn't it? Best foreign film?

I know I am quoting a post from last year but has anyone noticed that every one of Ellen Page's movies has a strong pedophile theme? Or at least the three or four I have seen. It's weird because she is actually in her 20s but she looks like she as 14 so it's creepy when these old guys hit on her in movies even though really it's just fine.
-
The only thing I find creepy is the sense of relief I had when I found out she was 2x.

Actually Juno is just a snarky little bitch, guy.

Sorry mate, thought you were being a wanker! Didn't mean to annoy if you were just joking.

No stress!

My girlfriend's pretty obssessed with the movie. I found it entertaining, but not something I would talk about for the rest of the day. I found the scenes with Juno and that married guy (what was his name again?) really, really awkward and creepy. But hey, that's just me. The soundtrack was pretty refreshing to me, but since my girl's been playing it nonstop I've been a bit sick of it. Good movie overall; just not something I'd go out of ym way to watch more than once.

I will quote you because this is exactly the same thing I am going through. My girlfriend bought it on Blu-Ray and it's weird because you can see artifacts from the analog film it was recorded with.

Juno was kind of that "shone in the face of adversity" films, because there are a couple of first timers here. Initially a comedy picture is more challenging to write than a drama. Diablo Cody's first screenplay, Ellen Page's first film as a lead actress (she was absolutely adorable in X3 btw), to which she did really well. Lots of comedians would agree that timing is the key part of comedy, and Page is quick, precise, and stops just short of going too far. The dialog was surprisingly witty (compare it to other recent films), and even though I also disliked the "jive" lingo Juno shares throughout, it's understood as part of her character (as others have said, not normal) and I grew to like her.
It's understandable why people would hate it, it's unconventional. Plenty were outraged at the endings of both No Country and Blood.
she should've had the abortion
-

She was the lead in Hard Candy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hard_Candy_(film)), and I think maybe a few other films. I would definitely agree that Juno is her breakthrough role though.
-
It's understandable why people would hate it, it's unconventional.
I don't hate it because it's unconventional. Hell, I don't hate it at all. It's simply a bad movie, end of story.
-
just finished watching it for the first time a few minutes ago and i gotta say i enjoy, not one of my favorite movies or anything, but i found it pretty enjoyable.

"shone in the face of adversity"?
what da heck do you mean. this started off as a minor project by a major studio, so it's not like there was a danger of backlash from the beginning. it's also about two middle class white kids, and has a pretty undeniable pro-life message. this film is right in with mainstream american values, there's no adversity to be overcome here.
it's not unconventional in the slightest. it's a romantic comedy which throws an BIG ISSUE in the mix so it can milk the subject and get some good drama out of it. what this film is, is a major studio release dressed up indie with a precious soundtrack and precious names attached to it.
-
just finished watching it for the first time a few minutes ago and i gotta say i enjoy, not one of my favorite movies or anything, but i found it pretty enjoyable.
This sums up my thoughts on it. I found it pretty enjoyable, too. Nothing too deep but it was cute and somewhat funny.
I had no idea it was Ellen Page in X3. She looks like she's 12 in that movie.
-
I saw this a while back in the cinema. A lot of the people seemed to like it. I liked it when I saw it. I didn't love it, though, and after a while, I got pretty fed up with Ellen Page and her weird language.
I've always hated Ellen Page since I saw her in Hard Candy (I hated that movie so much). Juno was basically the same character in Hard Candy but not psychotic and wanting to castrate somebody (who knows!) But putting all that aside, Ellen Page managed to get me to like her by the end of the movie and the scene with her in the car crying felt very real to me and that scene was very important to me to show that she wasn't just some jibberish-speaking indie-weirdo.
Jennifer Garner surprised me a lot and this is probably the best performance I've seen from her - although she doesn't have a whole good range of good performances, but I really thought she did well in this. Same goes for Jason Bateman. I thought he did a really good job also. In fact... y' know what... I thought every single actor in this movie pulled their weight and turned out a great performance in the end. Props to J.K. Simmons as well. He is an awesome character actor anyways.
The soundtrack annoyed me. It's simply not my kind of music. That's all I have to say about that. But at the end when Juno and Paulie were playing the song on the guitar and he kisses her was very sweet.
Jason Reitman directed this. I didn't know Reitman also directed Thank You For Smoking until after I saw Juno, and I hope Reitman continues to make these kinds of comedy movies. Though I think this movie was way overrated, I really liked it and I had a fun time watching it.
-
and has a pretty undeniable pro-life message.
I'm not sure, DC says she's pro-choice. The film didn't deny abortion as an option and say it's wrong.

It's unconventional in that the film shows teenage girls that aren't stereotypical, and that these non-stereotypes are "strong" in a real "human" sense.
I also think it's overrated, but worth your money.
-
Props to J.K. Simmons as well. He is an awesome character actor anyways.
Yeah - I forgot to point this out. He's really awesome in a much more 'wholesome' role than he usually plays. I've always liked him as an actor and it was nice to see him in a role like this.
-
I just want to clarify that the first ten minutes of this movie are absolutely horrible and ugh it's the worst but after that it gets better and I'm a faggot and kind of liked the last scene.
THAT SAID I still didn't really like it that much but it wasn't a horrible movie, just kind of annoying! Hardly worthy of a BEST PICTURE nomination but hey what can you do.
-
it feels, even now, like it's going to be some kind of CULT CLASSIC, in retrospect. like, the drinking of the giant sunny d bottle, the lingo, etc. i hope in ten or fifteen years people don't watch this movie the same way they watch PRETTY IN PINK or something and think "whoa... this is what life was like"
-
Hardly worthy of a BEST PICTURE nomination but hey what can you do.
Yeah I thought it was an extremely silly move to nominate this over Into the Wild, 3:10 to Yuma and Eastern Promises... even American Gangster.

You need to channel the energy of David Lynch and get more upset over this!

"it means you're abortioned now child, get out of my goddamn house"

You need to channel the energy of David Lynch and get more upset over this!
you're absolutely right and this article reminded me of why i hated it in the first place:
If Juno Was 10 Times Shorter and 100 Times More Honest (http://www.cracked.com/article_16161_if-juno-was-10-times-shorter-100-times-more-honest.html)
I think Juno might be one of those movies that I'll hate while watching it but sometime afterwards I'll think "well I don't know I guess it wasn't that bad" and then I'll watch it again and hate it. Just like Saving Private Ryan, which I haven't seen in a while and, you know, probably isn't as bad as I think it is.

that rewrite is so so good. it is THE MOVIE EXACTLY but uh, actually funny.
ahaha "I look forward to the scene in this movie that reunites us for the first time since the show was canceled, which is sure to be a real pleasure for fans."

Haha, this is pretty good. The JK Simmons and Michael Cera bits are awesome.

I just watched this last night, and holy fuck I hated every minute of it. I was able to count the number of times I laughed: 7 times. The movie felt like four hours long, so that's less than 2 laughs every hour.
It started off trying to be hip or some shit, and the whole Raine Wilson scene was just fucking awful. Then the movie tried to be liked Saved!, which was infinitely better.
Verdict: This movie is like a shitty version of Saved!.
