Title: Underworld - Oblivion With Bells
Post by: Ragnar on December 01, 2007, 01:46:57 am
Ok first of all yes these are the guys who made that BORN SLIPPY song that's on every dance/techno/rave compilation ever + Trainspotting soundtrack

But actually imo Underworld is one of the most innovative electronic groups out there that does "dance" music (as opposed to IDM and all that crap). Sure their songs are a little long (the first track off their third album is 16:36 and I hear there's a remix that's 30 minutes long). But if you liked Born Slippy a lot you might not like this album so much, because it has a lot less dance influence and more of the loungey/ambient stuff that was in their older albums but wasn't as prominent as it is here. Some people really love this album, saying it's a return to their earlier albums (Dubnobasswithmyheadman and Second Toughest in the Infants) but some think it's kind of boring and not good at all. Listening to some of the previews on Amazon it sounds like some of the middle tracks aren't so great, but I think the songs that are good are freckin' unbelievable. I do hear there are some issues though like instead of the dude's voice being in the mix, it's kind of /over/ the mix on a lot of tracks, which is bad because the lyrics are nonsense stuff a la Radiohead. That kind of sucks.

Here's some tracks from the album: (THEY'RE ON YOUTUBE SO IT'S OK)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3i2gnoGdzRA&feature=related - Glam Bucket

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9szdHrVKD6k&feature=related - Best Mamgu Ever

Oh I really like Underworld btw if you couldn't tell

Edit: Beautiful Burnout is the OMG EARGASM track imo although I really like Glam Bucket for some reason, like I would've loved to have done a song like that

Wow beautiful burnout is really good.
A great track to dance to!
I'm not so fond of glam bucket though.
Haven't listened to the other songs yet but so far it sounds good!

Underworld are cunts and I refuse to listen to a single piece of music they make until they drop the legal issues regarding the Sunshine OST and John Murphy etc and just let the damn thing be released.

Fuck you Underworld.

This! I'm dying for that soundtrack!

Say you wouldn't happen to have a copy of it from anywhere would you?

So I finally got the album

Well I already liked the 4 songs I posted up there, but I was worried it would be some really meh songs left over. Well not really, Holding the Moth was kind of a shock because I thought it was going to flow right from Beautiful Burnout. It kind of reminds me of something from A Hundred Days Off, but this piano part kicks in about halfway that's really ridiculously beautiful. To Heal is kind of like this Eno-esque track (like really Eno-esque actually, I could've sworn Eno /did/ make a track called To Heal) which is nice enough and short anyway even if it's not your thing. Ring Road is well, kind of weird, but it's funky too and I could see it growing on me. But the lyrics are kind of right /there/ on this track, and the whole thing feels a little overloud maybe. Boy, Boy, Boy is like the most epic thing ever and I basically just f**king love this track. I like how it's kind of rock but it still has that build-up feel of one of their techno tracks. Like these drums come in and it's like I've never heard DRUMS before it's so good. Cuddle Bunny Vs. The Celtic Villages is really weird and experimental but it's kind of soothing at the same time, seeing as I liked Glam Bucket this is kind of the dark version of Glam Bucket I guess. Feels kind of like really old like Blade Runner music or something even though it's from a 2007 album. Faxed Invitation is kind of a meh track like Ring Road, but it sounds kind of juicy or something so I like that part. But pretty much nothing happens in that track which is kind of annoying. Good Morning Cockerel is really short but really nice - reminds me of some Radiohead B-side or something actually. They should've developed it more though. And of course Best Mamgu Ever is awesome. Also if you're Japanese you get an extra track called Loads of Birds which is actually really cool but the bitcrushed sounds feel kind of tacky. It's also kind of too gloomy to be a proper album track so I can see why they left it out of the other versions.

I give it 5/5 because I'm obsessed with Underworld even at it's worst this is like one of the most uplifting things I've ever heard. It's like if their old material was infamous for people taking ecstasy to it, this album is so good it's like a high without taking anything. Really this album is so good in an arty way, I'm sure my brother will freak when he hears this because all he knows them from is that LAGER LAGER LAGER song
