Title: osu! (EBA/Ouendan PC simulator)
Post by: MysteriousWanderer on December 07, 2007, 01:43:42 am
There was a topic about the games Ouendan/Elite Beat Agents for the Nintendo DS a while back. Although for those of you that haven't played the games before, they are a music rhythm type game(like Dance Dance Revolution). Circles(or "beats") pop up on the screen and you are required to tap the circle when a larger circle is on top of the beats in order of the numbers. Besides the beats, there is also "sliding" and a spinner. In case I seem confusing to you, just visit the wiki site (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elite_Beat_Agents) for more info.

The concept of EBA/Ouendan is really neat and fun to play with and the games may be one of the most addicting and most time spent on your list(for the NDS). One of the things that I found that I didn't like was how much it was limited. There were only 18 songs and after a while, you just get bored of playing the same 18 songs.

I stumbled across osu! which is a simulation for Ouendan/Elite Beat Agents for the PC. It also features a user-friendly editor with handy tools to make your own beatmaps. The game itself is really smooth and I have only encountered one or two little bugs through my time playing. Your scores can go online and you can look at the rankings and replays while you're playing. Do take note that the game is still in beta even though it doesn't look like it.

Here are two gameplay screens from me:

Here is the editor:

So instead of using the stylus for the ds, you can use the mouse to hit the beats. I've read that the game supports tablets which is a plus.
To make your life easier, you can use the keys ctrl, spacebar, or z to "hit" the notes.

There are custom skins you can choose if you think the default is too ugly.

The beatmaps are moderated by a team to make sure they are good quality and not just random uploads. The game isn't popular at the moment and the moderating team is small so it takes some time for new maps to come on the beatmap list at the site.

btw osu!'s home page can be found at http://osu.ppy.sh/.

I hope you guys enjoy it.

ps i made two beatmaps already, kelly clarkson's "because of you" and porno graffiti's "mellisa"(fma opening 1)...I spelt "melissa" wrong so you have to search for "mellisa" :(

Time Bomb is a pretty good beatmap, and so is Can't Beat Airman. Try those two out.

The main thing I don't like is that tablets are difficult to get used to and the mouse isn't a good way to play (since they added the space bar using mouse has gotten considerably easier). Maybe in the future it will be easier to use, and this is currently the best Ouendan simulator out there, but right now it's still a little too 'beta' for me.

Wow this is an AWESOME find...  I freaking LOVE Ouendan, so I'm sure I'll like this.  I wish I could use a similar interface to the DS's, but ohwell, not gonna spend a few thousand on a tablet with a screen on it.

god damn i just cannot do the harder ones, idk if my mouse is too slow or something but any faster and it loses accuracy

weird cos im usually really good at rhythm games :/

ok so once i stared using ctrl instead of clicking it got a lot easier lol

bad beattracks really piss me the fuck off, though. either ones with unsynced beats or just ones with RANDOM BEATS (ie lets fighting love which sucks because thats an awesome song)

edit35: and on the other hand, tracks like world opening are the best thing ever.

Guitar hero simulator? Does it have an editor?

This is a lot of fun. I never play these games on consoles because I don't own them nor want to spend the money for them. And playing on the cimputer is fun because designing levels is what interests me the most. Problem is I suck at it. I'm trying to do Can't Stop by Chili Peppers but I'm not sure I get what Offset is.

I think it's the delay before the song goes into PLAY MODE

http://osu.ppy.sh/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=13 is seriously all the answers you need about the editor. make sure to watch the video, she(?) explains offset and shit. offset is basically the time between the start of the mp3/ogg and the first beat, it's impossible to tap it with some songs (ie ones that start in the first half second of the mp3) so youll have to play with the arrows a lot to get it right

Here's my first created one (http://mods.whahay.net/Jester/osu/Weird Al Yankovic - Germs.osz). It's a lot of fun making these.

Yeah, I already pointed out that you can use the keyboard keys to hit the notes instead of clicking as it is so much more easier, but I'll bold that on my post.

It also might help to increase the in-game sensitivity so you can move your cursor faster. I personally use x3. It may seem too fast at first but you'll eventually get used to the mouse speed.

Beatmaps also seem really hard to play at first but they do get easier as you play more. Although like Jester said, some beatmaps are just too hard for the mouse(some of the "Insane" are actually insane).

bloodbath, I mentioned editor and I have a screenshot of the editor :P

Oops I meant does the Guitar Hero one have a editor and I found out it does. It is actually really cool too.

Jester, I'm going to give it a try.

Oh and finally I get offset, thanks! I watched the video and I read shit and I just had the completely wrong idea of what it was. For some reason I thought it was a way of fine tuning the bpm. Seriously now it makes a lot more sense.

Dang, it didn't start properly on my laptop, but I'll try this on my desktop this evening. I liked EBA.

Cmon, is no one else making these?

Much harder than my last two (http://mods.whahay.net/Jester/osu/hardware.osz).
