This year, I mainly just direct downloaded random shit and kept what I liked and got rid of what I didn't. Some winners were The Lemon of Pink by The Books, and Left & Leaving by The Weakerthans. I don't know of any albums that are coming out this coming year, and I honestly don't think it's worth knowing. I'll probably just keep doing my thing. I forsee a lot of punk in my future. Patti Smith here I come. Metal is lame, it's not even that close to the new year, and this is another namedrop topic. list list list.
-
I'm not gonna lie, I downloaded a shitload of stuff as well, hell. But I usually just did that to see whether or not I was going to get my money's worth if I bought the CD. I ended up buying a quite a few CDs this year. Hell, I'm hoping to get John Coltrane's Giant Steps sometime next week.
-

Listen to the album "The Earth is Not a Cold Dead Place" - definitely one of my top favorite albums of all time. Specifically, their song "Your Hand in Mine" is beautiful.
-
Listening to "Your Hand In Mine" right now...
So far it seems very mellow, I'm especially digging the guitars.
-
could you guys not just post lists? this shit is terrible.

could you guys not just post lists? this shit is terrible.
the music or the topic
-
I know chef, I agree. it is a brainless topic
However, is it me or yuou are turning more cynicals maen. I'm seeing you negative feedback a plenty
-
gw is becoming so negative lately
-
more like we are missing some guy like trystero to absorbe all this negative frequencies into one person and take charge of it.
We're lacking these centripetal forces
-
could you guys not just post lists? this shit is terrible.
The last time I called out a list topic (http://www.gamingw.net/forums/index.php?topic=2914.0) I got bitched at and warned.
-
I really wish this place was the same way it was like a year or two ago. It feels like we're just going through the motions right now.
-
Yeah seriously guys, no one cares if you don't like lists. Don't ruin topics which other people could be interested in. No, don't start arguing how lists are horrible etc. because we know what you are going to say and it's okay if you think that. No one's forcing you to read or post. You could also post your favorite albums and tell something about them instead of going UGH HORRIBLE, maybe someone will follow your example!
Anyway, I'll post my favorites when the year is over.

i'm getting tired of gw. it's like we're going backwards. we're letting shit slide now that you should know RIGHT OFF THE BAT you shouldn't let go, like kk4, BLACK RAP, and this list topic. thanks for the lists guys! i am sure they mean something to the people who post them but to the rest of us who want to have a real discussion instead of seeing a bunch of names that don't mean anything it is shit. i like names and names. here's some names for you guys.
the dads - welcome to the dadhouse
the fart detective - i smell farts from across the globe and detect who did 'em part ii
gay dog - if you see any dicks tell me so i can put them in my mouth
gramp zone - dadtopia
hope you enjoyed the list and it wasn't just a bunch of words in a column ^_^
i don't know what to tell you if you are okay with list topics. you are dumb? you don't have standards maybe? don't post this shit. talk about the TOP 10 ALBUMS OF 2007, don't post their names.

that's a good example because wc posted that exact same list except with details on his lj. here's a link (http://washcycle.livejournal.com/3906.html?mode=reply). this is what people should be doing. compiling a list and explaining what you like about each album, not making a column of names. believe it or not, while music is subjective, you can always qualify what you like about it!!!
and about YOU DON'T HAVE TO READ THIS or FOLLOW BY EXAMPLE, i'll leave you with a little quote i've always really enjoyed.
"you shouldn't put the burden on good posters, you should put the test to the poor ones"

Your right chef, I'll give an explanation as to why I chose what I did instead of just a list.
My List
Releases of 07
1. Between the Buried and Me - Colors
I really enjoyed this album. I've always been a fan of this band and didn't know what to expect from this album, and it completely blew me away. Since I'm a whore for guitar solos, This album will pretty much satisfy me for years to come.
2. Tegan and Sara - The Con
I came across these two lovely ladies from another forum I visit. I was starting to get tired of heavy music and needed something simple, poppy, but still filed with many moments that would leave me in awe. I found that with this album. Everything from the catchy pop melodies to the darker ambient passages really left me wanting more. Granted there were a few songs I thought were pretty weak, there were some songs that just left me blown away ("Knife Going In", "Like O, Like H").
3. Chick Corea - To The Stars
I really don't have alot to say except that this album has definitely made me want to push myself as a musician. I love Chick's music. He always seems to make songs come alive. I was especially fond of "Allan Corday" and "Mistress Luck - A Portrait". Definitely a great album.
4. Blotted Science - The Machinations of Dementia
I needed something heavy towards the end of the year, and Blotted Science delivered. I'm a huge fan of Ron Jarzombek's shredding, and when I heard he was going to be playing with Charlie Zeleny and Alex Webster, I just had to hear what they were doing. It was definitely quite the shred fest of brutal riffs and melodic solos.
I'll try not to post "just list" anymore.

Yeah, the full album hasn't leaked yet, but a lot of the individual songs have been leaked through promotional means and such. There is a collection of 6 songs from it on sordo at the moment. I'm not downloading it because I'd rather wait to hear a decent full album rip though

You are the first person I've ever really known that likes Hanson in a not jokingly way (if you are being serious). Also, yes I noticed that we do have similar tastes...that's pretty cool!

I think I may be one of the very few members here that really enjoys a lot of pop music. Kelly Clarkson is fantastic(haven't heard her new CD), Carie Underwood is great, Josh Groban may be the greatest singer ever to live, and yeah, Hanson's new CD is pretty good!

I would not say I enjoy pop, but the three you mentioned are not intolerable. Carrie Underwood has put out some rather good stuff. I'll probably never be able to get into it because it is so ugh country sounding, though. I would be able to rationalize liking the music of the previously mentioned singers if they actually had more of a hand in writing their own material. I can respect them (somewhat) as singers, but even if I liked their material, I would not really be liking their material; know what I mean?
-
From 2007:
Deathspell Omega - Fas Itch Meladictim....
Sun of Weakness - Trompe L'Oeil
Pelican - City of Echoes
Alcest - Souvenirs d'un autre monde
Swallow The Sun - Hope
Amesoeurs MCD
And a few more
-
You know, I don't really like Hanson, but I do have a respect for them. They can play an instrument and sing. I know thats a stupid thing to say, but I have respect for people who can do that, hell, I always thought it was hard enough just playing an instrument or just singing.

Yeah this kinda I mean playing guitars/keyboards and singing is kinda common but drums and singing? I don't see that to often. I would guess it's rather difficult, but I could be wrong.

Hey, what! I really like how you said this. Yeah, they don't really write their own material (which is THE main factor that I can't respect most of pop music!), but there are some fantastic voices out there.

someone once used that argument against me to ridicule me for not liking fall out boy.
so yeah. cool

I've actually had that argument thrown at me for several band
The one argument I get the most though is "But they can really play there instruments, have you heard the solo from [insert ][/insert], its shred!".
I don't know why people equate being able to shred with playing a good song.
-

They aren't actually that horrible though, I mean granted they aren't my thing either but I don't think they are popsluts on the same level as Fall out Gay.
-
It's their aesthetic that makes them a horrible band.

this is a ridiculous post. everyone can do this. it takes a minimal amount of practice. outside of some pop acts (such as Britney Spears and American Idol finalists) and of course opera (but really who is counting that) there are very few musicians out there who do not both use an instrument and sing.
if the minimum for respect is the ability to strum a guitar while singing, there are several douchebags outside of frathouses that I think will blow your mind.
Yeah this kinda I mean playing guitars/keyboards and singing is kinda common but drums and singing? I don't see that to often. I would guess it's rather difficult, but I could be wrong.
it's less difficult and more fumbling and kind of silly. drummers are about rhythm, not melody (for the most part). chances are your average drummer isn't into singing at all because he's probably not that concerned about melody and more concerned about keeping ridiculously perfect time. I've made a lot of exaggerations (obviously drummers care about melody and shit) but really, asking this is like asking why the sculptor doesn't paint; it's a different skill set.

I'm not sure I follow. sorry, but Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson, Hanson, whoever the soup du jour is, they all kind of suck in the same way. you're arguing it's the aesthetic that prevents you from enjoying it too, which is bizarre. instead of disliking simplistic song structures with shallow lyrics and worthless, non-catchy hooks, you dislike the fact that it's got a southern edge to it? either your palate has been so refined by Blue Oyster Cult and 30 Seconds to Mars that certain accents in music grate on you, or there's some dissonance here that I'm not picking up on, because there's absolutely nothing different about the artists he listed from almost any other pop act.
someone once used that argument against me to ridicule me for not liking fall out boy.
so yeah. cool
yeah it's a completely worthless argument. it's like respecting someone who can rub their belly and pat their head at the same time. even if you do respect them, and you really shouldn't, (ideally) the respect is so small as to not warrant a thought of admiration.
It's their aesthetic that makes them a horrible band.
see, that's an example of an aesthetic that actually COULD irritate someone; they sing a certain way and play their instruments a certain way, to the degree that many people shovel them under the genre of "emo". while this is completely unfair to the actual emo bands, it is still a moniker that's applied to groups with that exact style.
as opposed to Kelly Clarkson who sounds exactly like almost every other female pop singer and makes little effort to differentiate herself, which is why it puzzles me that she becomes "not intolerable" (or following the rules of grammar, tolerable) as opposed to other acts that Jeff condemned.

LIST LIST LIST

I always feel horrible telling people their favorite bands are awful
but from a musicians perspective I feel justified in judging the relative quality of someone's musicianship and basing my tastes off that. I tend to miss out on why people are so attracted to what I call 'nonmusical music' and then I remember that I get a hell of a kick out of stuff like Blondie, the Eurythmics and various pop acts so yeah lots of conflict inside my head
the main point here is: if you really suck at your instruments or your music is entirely a studio creation (i.e. it cannot be replicated live without serious help (hello britney spears)) I dont like you
that said god damnit my 'list' as it were has changed already and I only made it like a week ago. If you have not picked up the new Ulver album and you are even remotely into their music or any sort of electronic/ambient/other weird music you must get it. It is so fucking good.
-
Sredni Vashtar:
hahaha, you are such a dick.
-
WC, your way of thinking is stupid and that of a snob.
Music is music, it has clasifications but there's no such thing as nonmusical music. That's ridiculous.
Level of virtuosity has nothing to do with it either.
Fall Out Boys play music, as much shit as you may think they are.
Why we think they are shit? Probably because we don't buy what they sell, because we consider it second rate ice cream, and I strongly dislike second rate ice cream, I only like high quality. And what is high quality? It is what appeals to us, whether because we appreciate the effort, the creativity, the catchy hooks, whatsoever.

I think you read too much into what I say. I dont sit around and deem bands 'nonmusical music' with my magic wand to get off for not liking them
I just had to come up with a word to describe what I was talking about so you guys would understand.
but I'm not going to argue with you about the relative quality of any given music because you and I have two completely different perspectives that are not likely to reconcile each other any time soon so whatever
-
i hate to help this thread devolve further into a pophate argument but
this is a serious quandary for me at times. i am very unsure about it!
see on one hand i think "man these guys are such products. this is not art." etc
but then the next thought is kinda "wait, they are not TRYING to be art. they are TRYING to be products."
so they are successful at what they are attempting, no?
the question then becomes is there something wrong with what they are doing-- but THEN its like
hmm who am i to judge that?
i dont know, its such a strange thing to try to objectively criticize/(validate/invalidate) something so widely considered to be 100000% subjective in nature (music)
-
To me, it doesn't really matter whether or not I'm deeming them right or wrong. Regardless of the music that they are playing, it is up to the people who are playing the music to decide for themselves whether or not the purposes for playing music are right and wrong. As a listener, you can't judge the band's objectives because you aren't in the band, and therefore you can't really know their objectives.
I wouldn't say that there is anything wrong with saying that you think that a band is terrible, or having no respect for their music (in the above mentioned case, I would saying that Fall Out Boy is a terrible band, and that I don't have respect for their music), but I don't consider that the same as judging whether or not their music is right or wrong.
Anyways, get back to the subject chups
