Title: ToP PSX Translated!
Post by: theHunter on December 25, 2007, 07:22:54 am
The Playstation 1 version of Tales of Phantasia has been released! And it's looking like the PSX version is FAR superior to the SNES version. I don't know if anyone really cares about it but I just thought that someone might wanna play the PSX version in english.

I don't even need to say it looks better than the GBA version, do I? :(

I couldn't stand ToP.  The encounter rate was ridiculous, the game rarely presented you with direction in the storyline (I'm not the only one who went to Morlia first only to miss the ONE random NPC who told you the password to that one cave), the game had some terrible puzzles, and it was about 8 hours longer than it should have been.

But it does look pretty.  Shame Tales of Destiny looks kind of uglier in comparison.

Now, why is it that Mother 3 is taking longer to translate than this entire game?

Reluctance due to the thin, thin hope that it would be translated.

So what is Tales of phantasia? Features? Storyline? How's the battle system?

You really need to work on making topics man. I'm sure there are people out there who don't know anything about ToP.

(yeah I know all the answers to those questions, but you could at least invest a bit more than 10s into making your topics)

I know nothing about this game at all...it doesn't look like it stands out much from other RPGs like this.  Especially since games like this get translated by fans all the time, I guess this one has to be something special to have a topic.

Cool, ToP PSX has been translated. Why Namco didn't just translate THIS version and translated the crappy GBA version is beyond me. But I'm definitely checking this out. About Dragon Quest IV, it's suppose to be coming to DS I think, but the chances of Square Enix bringing it over is slim. They seem reluctant to bring over the game, despite the fact that DQ games have been selling well in America recently.

you can't possibly imagine how profoundly frustrated it makes me that this game is fan-translated on 800 different consoles in one million (maybe one billion??) different languages, while the romhacking community has completely ignored Magical Vacation (http://mv.titney.org/) for the whole 6 years it's been out

Don't worry. DQ IV will come. You can use a action replay ds code to translate the game into english. Meaning that if it doesn't come they just wasted time translating.

Actually, seeing as we got both DQ Monsters Joker and Slime Quest there's a good chance all three games (DQIV, DQV, DQVI) might get released outside Japan. I seriously cant wait to play them! Finaly a DQVI remake!

oh man, I remember back when I used to be into GBA games, I was so excited when I saw screens of that game and wanted to play it, only to find out it was in Japanese. It was very....... magical.

Well the game has been out since what, 1999 or so? They've had nearly a decade to work on it. Meanwhile, Tales of Phantasia has gone through two more incarnations: The godawful GBA port and the improved PSP port.

I remember Magical Vacation because RPGoddess used to rip the graphics and use them in her rm2k game.

Since it seems exactly like the snes version (only with better graphics) which was translated years ago, it was only a matter of time before the psx version was translated. Hopefully the psx version won't be as confusing with some of the puzzles though, and doesn't kiddify the translation like the gba version had.

The dialog in the fan translated version was actually exaggerated quite a bit.  Klarth was much more abusive to his wife and the boat conversation was thrown way out of proportion but the GBA version did tame Arche's lecherousness and it was ambiguous as to whether Klarth even had a wife; if I hadn't played the SNES rom I would have thought she was A) a man and B) his apprentice/live in maid/butler.  There was a title that suggested who she really was but they really REALLY downplayed that character.

My appreciation for the translation scene makes me want to try this, but Tales Of games are pretty much the worst thing that has ever happened to video games, so I don't know if I can convince myself to take the plunge.

On the topic of translations that were never finished, I'm really bummed about the Lennus II translation -- particularly because it's actually done and just needs to be inserted into the game (although a lot of people don't realize that is probably the hard part).

This game of the series had (IMO) the best battle system and graphics of it's time. And the dialogue (fantranslated), characters, and story are (again IMO) the best in the series. Even playing it now, it still looks beautiful.

EDIT: And it is a shame that Magical Vacation isn't translated.

I've played a half dozen games in the series over the years, and they give me this very strong impression that the creators of the games just don't *get* videogames.  The Tales Of series really reminds me of RPGMaker games in a bad way; they feel and play exactly like the worst, most overblown and phoney RPGMaker games I've played.

I don't know about you Mala, but the battle system is fantastic in this game.

In fact, it pretty much DEFINES this game.
If that's what you mean by bad RPGMaker games and how they all play the same, I can sorta see where you're coming from. All of the Tales games play in a very similar fashion. Still, they are by no means horrible. If you're playing these games for some sort of storyline, then you must have gotten lost when reading about these games.

Btw I have this on my PSP now, and it's awesome. I love it.

Just for the record I said this in reference to the snes version. I say this because I downloaded and played the psx version a little bit yesterday and it's not as superior as I thought it was. Sure the graphics looks more smooth and polished overall, but they just don't look as good as the original. Everything in the game (Characters, weapons, etc.) look similar to the previous version, but differ to much for my tastes. The main thing I disliked about the psx version graphics-wise was the overworld map. I can't stand how they added 3D (I just don't like psx 3D period :)) to the map and allowed you to rotate it (made the map way to confusing if I rotated it). [/rant]

Anyway, I guess my point is, If you enjoyed the psx version, and haven't played the snes verion go download it you probably won't be disappointed and hopefully it will enhance your experience :fogetnaughty:.

oh mang

I didn't know they were making Dragon Quest IV for DS now

I always wanted to play that one in particular because I heard there was a whole new chapter and junk. (Granted you played as that Sephiroth wannabe but maybe he has lots of MADSKILLZ and such) Also the new final boss was this random henchman who didn't seem like much of anything, I think his name was Radimvice (man Dragon Warrior names are classic)

Edit: Considering it's a Dragon Warrior game an extra chapter better mean like 500 additional hours of gameplay + dungeons recycled from earlier dungeons because they're so clever like that

I'm with Neophyte. If more RPG Maker games played like Tales games, I might have actually played one since Aurora Wing.

Phantasia is the best in the series and a classic RPG. It's really pretty fun if you get into it.  I pretty much find all the other Tales games boring or stupid, but love this one.

I actually think it's one of the worst in the series, but then I think most of the others are pretty fun. The battles in Phantasia are too long for me, and they feel too much like a war of attrition.
