Metroid started a style of 2-d platforming which evolved the genre many years back. Since then it has been many times copied in games Castlevania and others I'm sure. The great thing about the series has always been its gripping atmosphere and level design.
What is your favorite Metroid? Mine would have to be Super Metroid (though Prime 1) comes very close. SM simply was way ahead of its time and had the most gripping gameplay and design upto that point and really showed how much could still be done with 2d design.

The only Metroid I ever enjoyed immensely was the one on the Gameboy. Metroid 2, was it?
-
While I liked Super Metroid when I was younger, I now don't enjoy the backtracking aspect of the entire series and the lack of direction which leads to more backtracking and exploring. I guess some people do enjoy the feeling of not know where to go and the exploration aspect, but it's just not for me. I don't like wasting time in games, and revisiting the same areas over and over again feels like a waste to me.

Me too actually! Haven't had the chance to play it much, I only just got to the first boss. The controls are swell though.
I really enjoyed the Metroid remake for the GBA aswell

I LOVED Fusion to death. More than all others. Don't know why.
-
Out of all them I would probably say Fusion. That was actually the first I played! No, tell a lie, the first was Prime. Prime, Prime 2, Fusion, Super, 1, 2, Zero Mission, and yesterday I got Prime 3. It's pretty fantastic so far!
Yeah I dunno, I didn't think Super Metroid was much chop, but everyone seems to love it to pieces. Fusion was definitely the best, imo.

Super Metroid, Super Metroid, and Super Metroid!!!! To me, it had the best boss battles, as well as good music, effects, enviroments and such. I loved it, it is one of my favorite games ever. Metroid Prime 3 comes in 2nd.

Super Metroid. That game blew my mind as a kid (next to Earthbound). Metroid Prime similarily blew my mind, but not as much as Super Metroid.
Also what's so great about Fusion? I thought the enviornments were totally drab, I was really disappointed by that game.

It brought back challenge to the Metroid series. After Metroid 2, the Metroid games started suffering from a terrible lack in difficulty but Fusion was pretty tough without being LOL CONTRA tough. I remember dying atleast 5 times fighting that robot spider guy's second form.
Also, evil Samus for the win. Being constantly chased by that parasite thing was the highlight of every GBA game I've ever played and it still remains a memorable experience that has been logged in the recesses of my brain.

Zero Mission had a clarity in its music track like I had never seen before in a Gameboy Advanced game. I played the SHIT out of it. I think I beat it about 10 times.
Also, last night I had a fucked up dream I was holding a copy of Metroid Prime 4. The subtitle started with an R =o it might have been ruins or something. I had apparently stolen it from a department store.

Prime 1 was the bomb
Fusion was the bomb
didn't like the others as much, I'd have to say they're not bombs

I love VISION INTO THE FUTURE dreams. I remember the year 1993 (or was it 94?) when Donkey Kong Country 2 came out, I beat it over christmas break. I then had a dream about DKC3 and how the last boss was a giant robot being piloted by one of the K. Krewls or whatever those guys names were.
A year and a half later, I was totally dead on accurate.

I've never really liked the Metroid games. Of course, me and my brothers completed the original one for NES back in the days of old (or well, they did... I basically watched or played while they went to the bathroom).
However, as someone else stated: There is no obvious direction in it. You just wander endlessly in big boring looking rooms, jumping on platforms, falling off platforms or rolling underneath platforms and kill enemies along the way. I was never really a fan of the Castlevania games either but the Sephiroth-looking guy was cool enough for me to try Symphony of the Night and play it through to the end.
Metroid's universe is interesting enough though. Had it been about a caveman I'd be less interested, no doubt there. And there's not enough chick heroes out there today, so Samus is a welcome addition to badass girls.
And yes, I've tried the first Metroid that converted into 3D (officially that is) which was less than good because becoming a golden bowling ball wasn't as cool having the Golden Gun in GoldenEye. Few FPS games works for me and Metroid Prime wasn't one of them. The only game where playing Samus Aran is actually fun is in Smash Bros.

Super Metroid still reigns as my fav, followed closely by Zero Mission. (one of the most kickass remakes ever) I don't own the original cartridge anymore so when I downloaded it on the VC it was like reliving that game all over again...well, except this time I knew almost everything about the game beforehand of course. :P
Metroid Prime 3 would certainly take spot #3 however.

I haven't played any of the Prime games, but Zero Mission is prolly my favorite because it had a kickass Ridley.
I also loved Fusion. It was so tense at points, especially at those times when SA-X was in the room. I also had headphones on, so it sucked me in. Man, they oughtta make another Metroid survival horror-type game, or maybe a full survival horror.
EDIT: Oh and I also love Super Metroid, of course. The end parts of the game were very touching...

I love the Metroid series. I got into it relatively late, though. The first time I ever even heard of Samus was when I played Super Smash Bros Melee, actually. Later on, I played Super Metroid and absolutely loved it. I think that SM is still my favorite of the series, but Zero Mission and Prime 1 are close seconds. I love Zero Mission's return to a more Super Metroid-ish feel, and it remakes the original game in incredible style. And Prime 1 elevates the game to first person adventure while still maintaining the distinct Metroid feel.
