How much of a gamer are you nowadays? With the next gen systems in full swing and as the video game culture is as thriving as ever to both the casual gamer and the hardcore gamer, how are you holding up in gaming? Have you maintained your interest in video games and the video game culture? Do you still make sure to catch all of the latest releases and the news about the systems they've played on? What's your current interest in video games?
As for me, honestly, my interest in video games are slowly fading. While I still like video games and certain genres quite a bit, I just can't be pressed to follow all of the gaming news, buy all of the newest releases, and even to play the games. It's nothing against the hobby personally, but as of why, I think it's just that other ways of spending time have gotten to a higher priority nowadays for me, especially with me being in the middle of college. The biggest reason is money; I just can't be arsed to spend hundreds of dollars on consoles, and then 50 bucks on a game when there are so many other things to spend money on.
-
I'm more of a casual gamer, and just play to pass the time, and what not. Although I think I'm getting into gaming a bit more recently, mainly because of the PSPs Homebrew greatness, trying out new things.
-
i. love. gams
-
Nowadays, not that much new stuff appeals to me. I just like to keep up to date on my favorite franchises (Mario, Zelda, Mega Man, classic Sonic, etc.), and once in a while I'll try something new that looks like it'll interest me. I think my library of games is a decent size. I find myself keeping up to date on the video game world in general. Sometimes I'll know so much about a game I've never played and people will think that I've played it.
That's another thing; I never sell or give away any of my games, no matter how bad or good they are. Anyone else do this?
-
Gaming is my life. Without video games I die.
-

Yeah, I'm the same way, but that's because most of my games are relatively rare RPG's I'm sure I'd never see again if I did (Suikoden 2, Lunar 2, etc)
-
There should be a "too much in my opinion" answer
That'd be mine.
-
casual, i can barely get myself to play halo these days but thats because its out in the family room and my mom runs a daycare so im not allowed much, i spend more time on the interweb then actual gaming.

I am what you would, call a "hardcore gamer", or "a game head".
Quite simply, I live to Game...
-
On a side-note, your poll really doesn't do justice for my kind of gamers.
I live to play, I enjoy playing, I play day and night, I listen to video game music, all the time I'm thinking about video games and etc. etc.
This does NOT fit into "I'm still very much a gamer; I follow all of the news and games." There should be a choice up there saying I LOVE VIDEO GAMES SO MUCH I AM A VIDEO GAME MYSELF.
EDIT: Ok that probably didn't make any sense but you get my point.
-

This.
I play games, but I only really follow my favorite series like FF, Sonic (as bad as the games are nowadays), Smash, Fire Emblem, and good ol' Star Ocean.
-
I'm interested in the gaming culture and read up on a few places about gaming news and developments in gaming. I hardly ever play any new games though. The only current-gen systems I own are a Wii and a DS and I don't have a lot of games. On the PC I only play games I get from the bargain bin. Instead I'm a gamer in the respect that I read and look at stuff about games but hardly ever play.
For actual games I'm a combination of a niche and casual gamer. On the PC I'm mostly niche, playing different older titles that no one plays anymore and on the consoles I just love my Mario and shooting the head off zombies.
-
I sure like playing games, and every now and then a gem comes along that I really, really like, but they're just not making enough good games anymore. It's sad. :(
-
It's still my main obsession, but I hardly play as much anymore.
-
I have a 550MHz PC and I have only touched a console about ten times in my entire life. That's how much of a gamer I am.
Not to say that I don't play computer games every day, but it does limit my options a bit.
-

admittedly it is a reall shallow kind of enjoyment and the weapons are really gay(as most of the them are ray gunz or phazers or some retarded thing that shoots purple crystals)
but i generally cant stand any shooters so it must be doing something right.
-
Even though I did spend an unusually large amount of cash getting consoles and the latest games this year... I would still be just as hardcore if I was just playing Dota and Lineage ][ (as ][/ (as] art scenes. I wouldn't have to give two shits about the latest news or the gaming community to be considered an avid gamer. But I do... so that makes me a gamefag all around.
-
See, I don't really keep up to much with gaming news and next gen things, but I spend
an unhealthy amount of time playing video games. Hell, My game collection is pretty small. But thats because I end up selling games to get new games. Of course, I'll keep it. My biggest collection for any system has to be Nintendo games (as in the system). But, ever since I discovered emulators, I've spent even more time playing games. I'm going back to the older systems to play games now, so I hardly know anything about the next gen stuff. So I guess I'm not a hardcore gamer. But like I said, I spend way to much time playing video games.
-
I play video games very often not EVERY day, and I check and see if there is any games that interest me, not games that I have to get for stupid reasons. I'd rather save my money then spend it on a game i'll never play (.hack)
-
I only buy video games I KNOW I'm going to love. Games like Bioshock, Mass Effect, Super Mario Galaxy, etc are the only games I actually purchase. I don't have to buy anything for my handhelds :naughty:, and I update my computer rarely for some of the actual good PC games. Other than that, I don't game too much.
-
I really don't play many videogames anymore. I'm much more of a board game geek than an electronic gamer. Give me a table, a few friends and a board game any day of the week and I'll choose that over staring at the tv pressing buttons. That's not to say that I hate video games and think they're pointless. No, some are pretty good and allow you to spend time with your friends and have a good time, but I think that I lot of people just go overboard when it comes to video games, wasting their life away. Anything is good in moderation but in the video game industry it seems like a large amount of people are hooked to the point where gaming becomes their life and they begin to neglect the more important things in life, and that somewhat worries me.

In terms of video games, I'm stuck in the 90s.
-
In terms of video games, I'm stuck in the 90s.
Yeah, this. I seem to have an 'old fogey' thing going on where the '90's were the good old days, with the SNES and Genesis in its prime, the heyday of Playstation and N64, some of the best RPG's came out around that time, and the Dreamcast. In my opinion I had the absolute best time of my life with videogames in the 90's.
-
I don't have much time for video games, but when I have a long enough break I play a lot of games. I typically pick one or two systems and play them for a while until I feel like other ones, mostly because it's easier to NOT constantly unplug and plug systems or move them depending on what room I'm playing them in. Since starting college I have more stuff I have to pay for, so I've been playing more older games since I can go to a local used game store and buy quite a few for a decent price. I've been playing a lot of Dreamcast lately, but I also just got a 360 so I've been playing it quite a lot too. I only get a game as soon as it comes out if it's a game I've really been looking forward to, otherwise I wait it out. I can play games for hours on end, but those hours are just scarce for me now, so I guess I can only call myself a slightly-above-casual gamer. I do keep up with gaming news and culture or whatever you want to call it.
I also spend a good amount of time tracking down rare games, both legitimate ones and ones that are so ridiculously bad sounding that I have to play them (and also Night Trap which is directly between those two ends of the spectrum). I think I spend more time finding games than playing them.
-
It's a bit hard putting in time for video games these days, but I know one thing for sure: I am a gamer. I don't think I'll ever stop playing video games for as long as I live. They're very much a part of who I am, and no matter how busy life becomes in the future, I'll always pick up the controller and play when I can.
-
I've probably been spending a bit too much time with games lately since I got The Orange Box.
-
I've been playing video games since I was like 3 or 4, and the first time I picked up a nintendo controller and used
it I was not even 1 (I couldn't even walk yet). I've been playing video games all my life, they are a part of my everyday
schedule.. but don't get me wrong, I'm not some freakishly addicted nerd or anything that spends 15-20 hours a day playing.
I play a healthy amount of games daily whilst doing other things, and I'm not as in touch with the news and next-gen stuff as
many other gamers though.
-
I still pay attention to gaming news and culture but since I've started university I just haven't had the time or money to play anymore. It really hit me when I tried to post in the Game of the Year forum but realised I didn't actually own any of the games on the 2007 release list.
-
I have a social life and hobbies and work out and am a student and have a job and everything, but I play video games on average several hours a day. I probably spend more time playing video games than nearly anyone I know! It isn't really that crazy to play video games for 20 or more hours a week, considering that most of us have at least 6 hours of free time every day and 12 or more on weekends.
I don't think that video games are a waste of time at all; they're something to do when you don't have something more pressing to do. I don't understand the view that even some people on a forum like Gaming World have that video games are a waste of time. I think that as long as you are doing something you have consciously decided to do, that is not clearly self-destructive (like heroin or something?), you are probably not wasting your time. That said, I think some people play video games for the wrong reasons; they aren't a form of escape or a source of fulfillment, and I think a lot of serious gamers avoid responsibilities or people and direct too much useful energy towards video games. I've seen this be a problem with some of the serious MMO crowd (my brother for example).
I was never into following gaming news at all until I got an iPod. I have always loved public radio and thus naturally love podcasts, so I listen to probably an hour or more of video game podcasts daily as I commute to work or walk to class or practice piano or whatever. It's kept me "in the know", but since I'd rather play games than read about them, I don't spend time at game sites unless I am looking up reviews.
-
I am still a very hardcore gamer.
-
I really don't play games too much anymore. I haven't really for the last few years either. I just don't really have the time for it anymore, and it's only going to get less with the future that I'm planning on going into too. However, there are a few series that I am quite loyal too, and plan to continue with, as well as a few games that I always have my eye on to play eventually someday.
-
I'm playing games less and less, but I do still like to read game articles online. I think I spend one hour a day playing any set of games. I spend much more time on the computer doing game related things than actually playing games. I'm actually not that good at playing video games. When I'm talking to my friends about games that we both like, they'll usually mention how fast they beat the game or on what difficulty they beat it on. It takes me twice as long to beat games than most people just going by the game clock alone. I don't really play like my friends do. They just drill through the game without taking any breaks and while skipping all the cutscenes. After beating the game they don't touch it unless it has multiplayer. I usually end up stopping in the game to look at the scenery, or to just listen to the music.
-

Fucking this. Even now, sometimes my mom goes
"Aten stop playing videogames! Are you gonna be playing games even after you're married?"
me: "yeah, pretty much. No matter how fucked up life gets, or how busy I am, I'll never stop playing games."
-
I didn't buy a next-gen (or rather, "current-gen" would be a better term) console. I barely played the PS2 at all, and have only a few games for it. I use my PSP mainly for emulation purposes. I haven't bought a game in a long time, and play only about one hour a week.
To me, the pinnacle of video games was the period between 1993-1997, and I'm talking almost exclusively about games on the PC there. The PSX generation was also amazing, but to me, nothing can really beat Quake, Tyrian, Sim City 2000, the Crusader games, the Warcraft games, the Tomb Raider games, Jazz Jackrabbit, Lemmings, Doom, Hexen, The Settlers, and many other lesser-known gems. And no community will ever engage me as much as the Quake scene has done with its countless dedicated servers, levels, mods, total conversions, scripts, programs, gadgets and gizmos.
It sounds kind of stupid, but to me, the time has come and gone, and I doubt it'll ever come back.
-
I am sort of in the same timeline boat as Dada, however to me it's more of 90-98. I like enough games out of this time frame afterwards as well, some before too. My interest in games has diminished a bit these days. I only play maybe three hours at the most a week now, maybe even one or two. Even the ones I play are limited to a few, I am becoming choosier these days.
-
I would say casual. I don't play games much at all. I usually only play when my friends come over to hang out but I have started another game in Xenosaga and I got sucked in (I was reading about it again and all it's story and religious references) and now I am playing that, but even then I play it a bit at a time.
-
I'm trying not to play games and focus on other things but I'm such a compulsive spender that I can't help but buy crap.
Half the games I own are still in the plastic.
Yeah.

You should send a few of the best ones over to me. :naughty:

I personally do think that the games were simply better to me back then. I'm saying this from a very subjective viewpoint; I'm not saying that games were better back then, but that they were better to me.
I've been working at a design studio for two years now, and I believe there are parallels between graphic design and video games from that time (as I mentioned before, it's largely the 90s in PC gaming I'm talking about here). I believe that game developers from back then were able to put in their own style in a much stronger sense than today. I'm not arguing that this is entirely untrue nowadays, or that this is strongly correlated with technological advances in the field, but rather that there seems to have been a change in attitude that's unappealing to me. Games simply have changed.
And also to clear something else up (this post is starting to sound very apologetic), I'm not a supporter of the "scratchware manifesto". I don't see how restricting game development teams to a maximum of three individuals is going to help. It's not going to bring us back to that era of games, even if such a thing gained mainstream support.
-
Well games were pretty awesome back then because they had art direction instead of photorealistic pant ripples and refractive sweatdrops.
-
Basically when a new Castlevania game comes out, I play it. Sometimes I play an old SNES game. That's it. It's not really that I'm uninterested in games, it's just that like Dada said, they're not quite the same these days. I still like almost any well known game released in the 90's more than any recent "big hit".
-
I WOULD LOVE TO PLAY VIDEO GAMESS!!!
The problem is my life sucks, I don't have money (yet) and I just bought a ps2 for the very first time in my entire life I can finally play some games. I only played a few games and that was like 10-12 years ago and I was still borrowing my Uncle's Ps1 at that time ;_;
I swear, once I get out of college and have a life and work, I'll play video games and keep updated all the time. For now I'm a sucky casual gamer that hasn't even played 98% of the world's greatest games :shady:
-
Where is the 'I'm obsessed with gaming but do not follow/rarely follow the news of gaming' option?
-
You should send a few of the best ones over to me. :naughty:
Pick and choose.
I just sorta throw games and DVD's randomly on the shelf...

This doesn't even account for all the older games like the Jaguar, 3DO, Saturn, MegaCD, several different commodores and Amigas, as well as that MSX home console thing; I keep those stuffed in a closet because there's no room. I took this picture last week for "insurance" purposes but I added Koudelka and every Shadow Hearts game to the collection since then.
-
25 years of gaming and still going strong. I still play roughly 30 hours+ per week and spend a bit of time online checking the different game sites for the latest news.
-
My interest in video games has always been pretty strong, but I would have to say my interest in consoles is fading. For mostly the same reason, money. Theres a few games on each console I'd like to play, but the PC is my choice. I just pay for hardware and most games come free, thanks to ruthless software piracy :gwa:

So you're the reason Crysis only sold 80,000 units last month but it seems like everyone is talking about it!
-
I'm glad I didn't pay for it. It was over hyped. The gameplay doesn't bring much new to the table. Graphics are indisputably nice though.
-
Crysis was my fave game of last year, despite only being marginly longer than HL2Ep2, because it did allow a great deal of change in gameplay (it was very much a do what you want kinda game so if you didn't experience anything really new, that's more to do with how you play as opposed to the game :/). Plus the special edition's metal tin is very pretty.
but bleahg. I have more and more become a major hardcore PC gamer, clocking up about 12 hours a day when not at work. It's something I very much don't wanna do, but I have nothing else and it's better than reality, so why not?
Kinda funny as last year I was losing interest but now I do nothing other than game unfortunately.
-

This seems like the general consensus on every major video game release these days :( I haven't played Crysis, and I'm almost absolutely positive that it was overhyped and not really that interesting, because I wasn't very impressed by its spiritual prequel (Farcry). However I think that its sales figures compared to its overall mindshare is an absolute tragedy -- a quick visit to any more torrent site shows tens of thousands of seeders online at any given moment. I wouldn't be surprised if Crysis has earned the dubious distinction of being the most-injured-by-piracy video game ever published.
-
You need an option which says PREFERS GAMING OVER FOOD OR SLEEP... I started playing games when i was around 5, but i was a bit late to the party... for example- I was playing SMB 3 on the Nes when the playstation 1 was released. I got my first PS1 about 3 years after the PS2 was released, and I got my PS2 around a year later. Don't have a next gen console yet.

I wouldn't be surprised either. I would venture to guess that a lot more people that average downloaded it it merely to see if it would run on their system, or just to see what it looked like. And even their demo which was supposed to address a majority of those people had bad multi-core support, and NO sli support, making the most resource intensive game even harder to run well. This game must have also pushed many many people to upgrade, who after doing so don't didn't feel like paying for the game after (and especially not from hearing of how short it is/nominal the gameplay is).
-
'I'm pretty interested in games and in the gaming culture.'
I'd consider myself a pretty big gamer considering my knowledge of, and how much time I pour into games compared to most people. Like most people here, I'm sure. But... this next-gen wave, I'm not as enthusiastic about as I was about PSX and PS2 etc., probably because I'm not as young anymore, yeah. Next-gen consoles unfortunately aren't compatible with the 'rose-tinted spectacles' peripheral. Obviously there are some good games, for instance I really enjoyed Enchanted Arms on PS3 (also 360), but it's hard to get as excited/fanatical about it all, let alone buy as much as I still buy PS2 games (but I suppose the price also influences that, heh).
So yeah, I don't really keep totally up to date with all the latest news etc. But wouldn't call myself a 'casual gamer'.
-

I felt the same way about the previous console era right up until the end of it (specifically, Playstation 2). However, I am extremely interested in PS3 and 360 games, and my gaming hobby has been completely rejeuvenated.

If Anything Crysis was pretty under-hyped (compared to actually how good the game is), and got blown out of the water by a piece of shit (Call of Duty 4) which has had constant hype all year round (HEY WE HAVE RESKINNED NAZIS INTO SANDNIGGERS AREN'T WE SO MODERN!?!?!) and is one of the most boring FPS games in recent years (Medal of Honour Airbourne is like 500X better than CoD4 NO KIDDING). Plus PC Gamers have had a major drain previously what with World in Conflict, Orange Box and Bioshock (this also caused abysmal sales for ET: Quake Wars and UT3 (though admitedly UT3 deserves poor sales))Whilst it was hurt by downloads, it was hardely a substantial damage compared to the other factors, such as yeah... the hardware issues. Personally I think they could have easily waited a year before releasing crysis (it it would still be enough to blow people away), and lots more people would be able to play it.
Man you know you're a saddo game freak loser when you spend your time reading articles about GAME SALES FIGURES as opposed to reading about the games ;_;
-
I'm casual. When I have an hour or so kill, I'll play a game. I buy only like, one or two games a year. I only get what I KNOW I'm going to like.
Except for Rule of the Rose... I tried to like it, but it sucked so hard so early.
-

I listen to podcasts while at work or commuting to/from work, and there are several popular videogame podcasts that go through monthly sales figures as a footnote so SHUT UP
SANDNIGGERS
Jesus.

I'm a total gamer but I'm only really interested in PC games, and to a very very small extent ds/wii. But mostly PC.
-
Damn it, dholen, thankyou for putting Skies of Arcadia in your top 10. Logically, though, it should be first.
-
I am between casual-hardcore, i have a PS2 which i use regularly, my PC which is kinda old to play all these new games that come out and a PSP. Most of the time i play Online games like Counter Strike, Warcraft 3 and WoW. I like to read reviews about new game however i rarely buy one.
-
I'm just as interested in video games as I always was. The problem for me is money. There are loads of games I'd love to buy, but I just don't have that kind of budget.
If I had enough money, I'd only be getting offer my butt to change the discs.
-
I'm still pretty interested, still very much involved but definitely not as much as I used to be. It has been a long time since I've ever been bogged down by a backlog of games which is the situation I'm in now. It's just that more pressing responsibilities (more work in school, more work at...work) among other things doesn't allow very many times where I can dedicate more than two hours to a game in a single sitting. When it first came out it took me nearly a month to beat Twilight Princess and even longer to get as close as I could to 100% completion for example. I'm actually not sure if I want to get the Wii Fire Emblem because even the GCN one took a lot of time to beat and the Wii's game is apparently quite a bit longer and more involved content wise.
I'd probably wager that before long, portable gaming will begin to take priority with me, gaming wise, moreso than console gaming.
I do keep up with the news and still try to read quite a few articles and editorials here and there; but otherwise, while I won't consider myself a casual gamer every year I find myself getting closer and closer to that, especially if I'm already thinking of casting aside games I'm highly interested in as a result.
-
I play a lot of games but rarely anything new, next-gen consoles don't appeal to me either but XBLA seems quite awesome, I think overall the PS3 is a much better console though.
It's hard to find developers to like now, studios are so much bigger and for whatever reason are often incapable of making good games.
