Lol, as you can see I don't have the best gear. At the moment just a boss md-2 MEGA DISTORTION OMGRAWR pedal and a marshall microstack. I don't really have any complaints about this guitar. I wish it had more than 1 volume and 1 tone knob but eh, that's really about it. The emgs pick up really nicely as you can imagine, with a decent amount of gain all you have to do is tap it.

I plan on buying a tube amp of some sort in the future. I'd like to look into marshalls and line 6s, but if you have any other suggestions please feel free. I've got a lot of time to fuck around with different amps while I'm saving up for a half stack. I also want to get a multi-fx pedal. They're relatively cheap, but I'm pretty fucking broke right now. Anyway, show and tell!

here's a suggestion: stay away from low end marshall amps and line 6s. unless you're getting a marshall jcm800 or one of the DSL/TSL series, don't buy a marshall

and line 6's are garbage.

as for my own gear:

fender '65 mustang
boss ds2 distortion
vox v847a wah
electro-harmonix big muff pi usa
fender blues deluxe reissue
vox ad50vt

Ignore Ryan he doesn't know what he's talking about. Marshalls use diode clipping to produce distortion. Why the hell would someone put that in a tube amp?

If you want something decent get a Soldano instead. Soldano makes high-high-gain amps. But if you want something that has a famous brand... well then you can buy a marshall.

Right now what I have is an indonesia-made 2007 cort viva guitar and no amp or whatever.

hey stupid you realize marshall tube amps are like, uh, KNOWN FOR THEIR DISTORTION?

and i wouldn't even recommend a marshall if he hadn't said he was looking into them. i find orange amps to be much better!

but again, inri was the guy arguing for solid state over tube amps so yeah

I play on a 2007 MIM stratocaster, peavey classic 30 tube amp, and a dunlop crybaby wah. I have a few other low end guitars and SS amps but they really arent worth mentioning

KNOWN FOR THEIR DISTORTION?

Distortion produced by diode clipping = SOLID STATE DISTORTION.

--

PS: that also includes most distortion pedals.

I guess I should kinda describe the sound I'm looking for. I'm more of a treble-head and I really hate when notes get drowned out because of over distortion. I like it, but not to the point where things become inaudible and the lower octaves drown everything. I know I could get an eq pedal but, iuno. Just a decent tube amp I could possibly use for gigs sometime in the future.

uh. marshall amps became known for their distortion far before diode clipping was added. and no, the newer marshalls with the solid state diode in them are definitely NOT solid state distortion. it further increases the already tube overdriven sound with extra distortion akin to adding a distortion pedal.

Are you saying that clipping diode distortion is not solid state distortion? Like, a distortion pedal which is nothing but an op-amp with clipping diodes added, is not solid state distortion?

Fatboy if I were you I'd get a combo with a 12" speaker that sounded as clean as possible on high-volume and a decent multi-effects like a zoom G7.1ut, then you could create any kind of sound you wanted with it.

no i'm saying the newer marshalls distortion doesn't sound like solid state distortion. it sounds like a tube overdrive with some extra distortion. the actual TONE is not solid state by any means. it may have some added distortion by diodes but it's certainly not the dominant factor in tone.

You know that the sound of an overdriven tube is not the same as the "overdrive" produced by diode clipping right?
Title: SHOW & TELL!!! Post current guitar/gear and discuss future buys
Post by: Ryan on January 09, 2008, 07:31:06 pm
.. the overdrive isn't produced by diode clipping. the diodes are added to further distort the already overdriven sound, thus making them more of a 'high gain' type of amp
Title: SHOW & TELL!!! Post current guitar/gear and discuss future buys
Post by: Mince Wobley on January 09, 2008, 07:48:14 pm
Ryan, overdrive is when the amp attempts to output more than it can, the sound clips and it results in distortion and this sounds nice in tube amps but totally awful if it happens to the power stage of a transistor amplifier.

What diode clipping does is just that, clipping the signal to attempt to emulate the "overdriven tube" sound without actually overdriving any tube

Watch this video of a 4 watts high gain amp with real tube overdrive

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oc89qquzEp4

It sounds better than most marshalls with "diode overdrive"

overdrive is not distortion.

and i know opinions lol but that amp didn't sound all that great. youtube has awful sound quality, though.

i bought it after playing it at my local shop. i was deciding between a strat and a mustang but i ended up getting the mustang. it has a very unique tone to it and I really liked the feel of it.

and i play stuff like rhcp, the mars volta, hendrix, velvet underground, john frusciante, lots of classic rock (led zeppelin, cream, pink floyd, the who, etc)

mine's like that except woodgrain. I don't play a lot, but I like it

I also have a standard drumset and amp stuff I don't feel like posting

my dad's got a pretty impressive collection of guitars and other string instruments that I play sometimes, I'll edit this post if I can remember what they are

Please ignore that i play an Epiphone SG, I am in the process of procurring a Fender Strat. 1990 one, absolutely lush.

but yeah, i play that. I've got a Marshall 15 DFX (very nice) which i use for the average bedroom messing about and a Line 6 Spider (say what you will, its a nice amp), for playing with the band.
Acoustically, i play a Tanglewood Oddysey (its a roundback). Lovely guitar, great sound to it.
I also have a novation X-station synth, Yamahha Keys and a Collins Mandolin.

Oh, pedals. Boss DFX (crucial) and a Marshall Echohead. Great delay pedal.

it was my dad's old hagstrom. they're still around today, and they make some similar models. check them out: http://www.hagstromguitars.com/ I really like how the F-200P looks in cream

I need to re-wire mine, but otherwise it's still good

That's a pretty tight guitar, man. Some old guitars have too much weird decoration on the body but i think that looks quite nice.

i bought it after playing it at my local shop. i was deciding between a strat and a mustang but i ended up getting the mustang. it has a very unique tone to it and I really liked the feel of it.

and i play stuff like rhcp, the mars volta, hendrix, velvet underground, john frusciante, lots of classic rock (led zeppelin :naughty:, cream, pink floyd, the who, etc)
Yeah, i pretty much like Mustangs sound, it sounds gorgeous. Can you get any clean, soft sound out of it besides that honking mustang - sound? Or assuming that if i had such guitar, do i have to change the neck mic?

Stupidly put, yeah, but i'm basically trying to find out can you play some clean (,soft sounding) stuff with it since it has quite twangy/honky sound (even more when the mics are out of phase). :fogetbackflip:

Nonono, i mean, it has great cleans, i know. What i tried to ask is that can you get other sound of beside that mustang COUNTRY TWANG. I don't mean any humbucker softness, i mean something less countri-ish.
This is rather difficult since i can't compare the tones. :fogetshrug:

yeah you can roll back the tone nob and get jazz-like cleans. it sounds a lot like a telecaster with less attack and more sustain.

well idk about that one, it's probably like mine but maybe not. I've actually got a hagstrom III and that II is the only one I had on my comp, but I will finally take some pics now!!

it's a tone pot, there is actually no volume control

I'm not sure about all the other switches though, like I said I need to fix up the wiring. my dad says they turn the pickups on/off and something else, maybe more tone control?

like that except my headstock isn't painted
i really want to put a mustang bridge on it to reduce buzz/intonation issues, but otherwise i love it

Jay Turser Cruiser Deluxe (thinline Telecaster knockoff)
it's very nice but the neck pickup has almost NO VOLUME which limits my clean tone to a degree

Nothing special...Just some budget guitars, but I love them none the less.

A Johnson strat: I cant post the specs because I can find them, not even on johnsons site. It was my first guitar. Stock pickups/tuners etc. I have it set up with .12-.52 strings :fogetnaughty: I spray painted a pickguard and got it signed by tommy emmanuel and steven bennett.

My Esp/Ltd:
Ltd F-100fm

Wood: Agathis[ewww]/flamed maple top
Neck/Fingerboard: Maple/Rosewood
Frets: 24 XJ
Bolt On/ 25.5
Tuners: Stock
Bridge: Tune o matic
Pickups: Seymour duncan sh-14 custom-5 for bridge, stock p.u for the neck.

I love the tone of my new seymour duncan pickup[its ][/its] It actually has tonal characteristics, unlike the stock pickups...It has nice clarity and the distortion sounds perfect. Right on the egde of hot output, and its has a nice crispy crunchy thickness to it.

Its really weird, because I wired the new pickup wrong, but I wired it so it messed with the neck pickup, and when I switch the to neck pickup, it gives it the sound of a fuzzy wah, like that of Zack Wylde. Its actually interesting...

Sexy geetar :)))

Amp: Crate GT65.
65 watts, reverb, 12 inch speaker.
Pretty good amp, definitely not the best for gigs, becuase its a bit small[duh]. but I dont really have the money for a stack atm. If I did have the $$$ though, Id get a crate tube stack or if I had even more $$$ Id get a Bogner Ubershall, but I hear they arnt very versatile...and are really exspensive. I really love the warm tone a crate gives so Ill prolly stick with those.

I plan to get a guitar with a floyd rose. Like a superstrat or something. If I could get a custom Id get an ESP eclipse with a floyd rose tremolo installed...

that's a silly idea

Also since my instruments are elsewhere (college, other people's homes etc.) you will have to have internet photos!

Yeah my bass is an Epiphone copy of a Gibson Thunderbird IV.

I also have a backup Jazz Bass copy, with a nice pearl scratchplate =D

I also have a white Epiphone copy of a Gibson SG (which is apparently impossible to get a good picture of!)

Finally, when I have a good job I will be purchasing the beautiful Rickenbacker 4003 (or a 4001 if I can find one)

Yeah, I am a lefty :fogetcool: I actually was thinking about doing that, the only problem is that Id have to try out a right handed guitar without the reversed strings.
Or I could just go to the lefty section and try out guitars there and tell them to get me a right handed model of which ever one I want. That would confuse them Id imagine :fogetmmh:

And yeah rockman that does sound silly but it would save me some money from having to special order all of my guitars :gwa:

Yes, curse them for making to many right handed guitars and not enough "backwards" guitars
And I would like an ambedextrious guitar they are quite sexy.

And iirc back in the day[50s-60s] they used to take left handed kids into the classrooms during recess and try to force teach them to write right handed. Im glad I dont live in those times...Mine as well find all the brown people and make them bath in bleach

I'm sorry if this is considered necroposting, but I'm looking for a decent multi-effects (a digital one) and I can't decide between a "pocket pod", a "v-amp2" and a zoom g2.1u. Don't even recommend me a digitech because they sound like every other multi-fx I know, except that they're more expensive. I tried the Zoom G2.1 in real life, and I rather liked it, it has a convincing wah-wah emulator. But what abou the POD and V-AMP2? Are they as good as people say they are? V-amp2 would be a good choice if I could get a midi foot controller like FCB1010. And I don't know anything about the "pocket pod", except that you can edit the presets from your computer, and it's really small and has no support for foot controllers and it has the line6 brand.

Please help me.

Yes I do. I don't know how they could make an ambidexterious guitar. If they did it would probably not look so cool since over so many years we've been indoctrinated with so much asymetrical instruments.
