Here's the simple idea:
- Go to http://www.gamecake.net/cake/
- Read the guidelines, and register a new account.
- Enter as much keywords as you can think of that are associated with game development. This can range from toolkit specific keywords like 'rm2k' or 'panaroma' or 'sprite' to character development keywords like: 'character', 'story', 'emotion' etc..
BONUS AWESOME PRIZE: For the two top players, I will mail you a box full of AWESOME CRAP all the way from here in Waterloo, Canada. Talk about foreign stuff right there! This is of course optional, and only if you want to give me your mailing address.
I will run this for about a week or two, depending on the amount of keywords. First 2 people to have the most will get premium memberships. I may reveal in a few days who are the top 5 "players" so there is perhaps some more competition
Anyways, GOGOGOGOG NOW AND DO THIS (http://www.gamecake.net/cake/)
-
Awesome. I'll be doing this.
PS: 59 so far. Don't think I'll be winning this.
-
Interesting...

Is this to improve our google hits and help bring more guests here?
If so, I'd just like to warn everyone that we may see an influx of new members who are interested in "grandpa sex"
edit: also, who drew the couch-cake logo??? it's awesome

Going to send some beaver pelt and a poutine?
-
Yeah, that logo is shit-hot. Well done to whoever did it.
A leaderboard would be a great idea Bart - a competitive spirit would get you many more keywords, methinks. The bonus prize sounds sweet - an idea would be that a winner could request an item for you to buy (for under 10 dollars or something similar). That'd make many far away people (myself included) work harder, since I can't for the life of me find a 40 oz of malt liquor anywhere in Australia.
-
Bart, I am going to win this. I want your Jelybean collection. All of it.
-
Sorry I forgot to put it on the page .. but Frankie (Psychoskull) did the image, I put it on the site now
-
i want a box of AWESOME CRAP :D i am totally going to win this woooo
EDIT: is it okay to use plurals and variations of words? like using both "sprite" and "sprites" or something.
EDIT2: capitals don't matter, right?
-
i want that boxxx

It is, yah, but I don't think it will be very useful. when I pick the winners, and the top guy has every single word has singular/plural then I won't let them win
Capitals don't matter .. all text is going into the database as lower
-
Dear, 640 keywords! How!!??!
-
As many keywords :(
As many :(
I will never win but I would still love to get that box (even though Waterloo is only about 45-60 minutes from here so it would not be exotic!).
-
Dear, 640 keywords! How!!??!
The hell.
Too bad. I'll be losing this one, I'm afraid.
-
Haha I got 59 and gave up, dammit!
-
MWAHA. I got 62.
-
Wuahahaha, there are now 666 unique keywords in the database.
-
I got 150 keywords :)
37 were already gotten, oh well.
-
This is great Im right on it
Ill even add the intentional typos
EDIT: What if we have something with 2 words? like "Game Programming"? Do we seperate the with a comma?
-
no, just like tiles, game programming, rpg maker, etc, etc
-
I got 150 keywords :)

Is that 150 keywords before or after duplicates/invalids were taken out? :fogetmmh:
-
Some people may have more then they think as once this is near ending, I will clear out a bunch of dumb keywords and things like that
Duplicates don't exist in the database though
-
no, just like tiles, game programming, rpg maker, etc, etc
good, i put alot of those, and a whole bunch of random 3d modeling programs/programming languages
and if "Love Hina" pops up, it wasnt me
-

duplicates???
I think the taken out ones state that 37 of them are already in the database, meaning I typed 37 keywords that some else has already placed in.
I didn't put any duplicates at all :fogetshrug:
-
What I meant by duplicates was if you had any keywords that were already in the database. I already know those won't be counted.
-
We are near 1,000.
Awesome job guys!
-
Good job on whoever put "red bull" in by the way. Close, but not exactly game dev related :)
-
"So far, 1000 unique keywords have been added. Wowsa!"
hehehehehehehe
-
Oh, come on, if you wanted to send that box to Buenos Aires, Argentina, you'd have to donate some organs and it'd arrive when i'm 32 :p
-
I could always make it a very tiny box that will at most cost me 10 dollars to ship
and i would probably include some actual cat crap in it too
-
I'm at 64! Still totally gonna lose...
-
86...
Can you reveal the top so far already?
-
This weekend I will be updating the page with the top players, and an official deadline if there need be one
Thanks for the support so far!
-
Alright cool.
And damn, I entered almost everything possible I can think of (including every C++ code I think...even though I can't really code it :(). Bleh!
-
I updated the page with a live version of the current top players
Here it is as of now:
Keyword Count User Name
900 alphasmart
357 ASE
328 Bondo
176 hobo2
135 stenny
First is pretty much taken .. unless I see that he has been adding junk, but second is a close one!
-
who is alphasmart
-
The winner. I got a whole number of obvious ones too, including all the rpg makers. I must confess I scoured various game development dictionaries and added nearly all game engine, programming language, game library, physics engine and really any tool one could use. I don't know any programming so I didn't add any more than things like switch and event etc. Then reknowned game developers - bit-blot (http://www.bit-blot.com), derek yu and a good portion of the names of any game-dev-related people in wikipedia.
IOW I'm a big loser with waay too much time on my hands.
-
900?! You're a machine!

That's the kind of spunk I like.
By the way, I've given you premium because even if you somehow don't win, you've done exactly what I wanted so ya
If you would like a package of random crap from me, you can pm me a shipping address and dear god I hope you are not located on the Honalulu islands of Zimbabtwu or something
-
hawt. And I'm pink. TOTALLY more than worth it. And I live in the sunny UK, though Zimbabtwu most definitely needs to be a real place.
-
We're not going to be doing keyword stuffing and other SEO spam, are we? Because, trust me, it won't work out well.

No not even close
-
Holy shit that's fucking impossible.
And also, I started doing what he did (searching around shit) but I guess if I had done it earlier I would've been golden.
-
...but second is a close one!
Ho ho ho! Not anymore!
-
Wow I am impressed you thought of so many words
I'm curious to see what you put in
-
The contest is over!
Bondo and Alphasmart are the winners, thanks for all your contributions and sorry for the delay there .. had a busy work week!
I'll be sending you two your packages soon, and you both now have premium
-
my excitement is only exceeded by my huge excess of free time. I'm only wishing I knew html (and how to make it work to my nefarious advantage...)
also woah crazy filter on ridiculous. What more surprises am I to find?

are you talking about the rediculous??
-
Woo!!
I kept on watching the site to see if anybody pulled ahead. It looked like everyone just kind of gave up last week.
I think I'll purchase one or two for someone as a gift in the future. The purpose of PM is to help the site financially, and I believe I failed in this aspect.
Thank you anyway though. I will use it well.
-

yeah being premium has nothing to do with that filter

Hey guys, I have a HUGE (3935 items) keyword list that I pulled from Automatica, a Journal of IFAC(International Federation of Automatic Control), and I was wondering if Bart would get angry if I submit it to gamecakes. It's all generic terms dealing with most sciences and there are a bunch of business terms in it too.
Most of the terms are the likes of which you see in technical papers and scientific articles.
Just doing a check to make sure this is the kind of stuff Bart is looking for.

What? No.

of.. course it isn't. he's looking for words to do with MAKING GAMES not SCIENCE AND BUSINESS
how do you get those confused
