What was the most annoying dungeon in all of FF1?!
i personally hated the marsh cave due to poison and piscodemons/magicians
but on the other hand the volcano killed me the most so i choose volcano
-
CHAOS SHRINE!!!! Godamn hopeless level design!!! this is what happened when i saw how easy that dungeon was- :throw:
-
The Ice Cavern, waste of time bein' there, those old bastards should've just give you the Flying Rock instead of havin' to go all the way to the Ice place and all the way back down, I hated that damn dungeon, 2nd place winner is the Earth Cavern, you have to go through there twice... not very enlightening.

I dunno I never really found FF1 that difficult me and my friend had a race to finish the game and we did it in a day. We both had the same team at the end,
White Knight
Ninja
White Wizard
Black Wizard
...then again, we were playing the gba version. The only problem was finding the airship because it was both or our first times playing the game, we had no idea what to do until I randomly stumbled into the desert.
I can't remember though maybe the earth cavern, when you have to go in then exit then get to the bottom floor. Time consuming...
-
Hard dungeons? In FF1? It was easy as cheese! I chose Marsh Cave because it was remotely the most annoying.
-
I'm going more by FF1 NES rather than GBA. Also, it's been some time since I played, so I may not be accurate, I'm more going on my memory which tends to fail me.
Chaos Shrine
Masamune is nice. I never really had problems except for Chaos himself, who loved to Cure4 himself and take us down easily. This was on the GBA version though. I think I didn't have a problem with the NES version of Chaos.
Marsh Cave
Blah, Marsh cave. Despite there being a few things you can get once you have the key, I never bothered. It takes too long to get there, overabundance of poisoning enemies, and the treasures there aren't really great. Maybe not the most annoying, but certainly up there. And having to fight Ogres/Creeps for enough money to afford Silver swords, Fire2 and all that is another annoyance, because you know you have to do that for the Marsh Cave anyway.
Cave of Earth
Hall of giants is pretty good for levelling, plus Earth elementals in front of chests. Unfortunately that Steel armor costs so much. It's pretty big, and at lower levels Cocatrices/Perilisks can kill you in one hit. I didn't consider it particularly annoying, plus it was nice to finally be away from Elfland and that area.
Volcano
The fire damaging can be annoying, but other than that, I wasn't particularly annoyed with it. I dunno why.
Underwater Shrine
I sometimes get lost here. Other than that, mermaids. That's about it.
Desert Spire/Mirage tower
Sometimes get lost in here too. You get some pretty nice stuff in here. Too bad WarMech's around. 1 in 64 chance. Heh. I'm unlucky enough to pretty much always run into it.
Temple of Chaos
If you mean Temple of Fiends, it is the simplest dungeon ever. Go straight, fight Garland, hope he doesn't knock you all down. The treasure isn't really worth it in my opinion.
Ice Cavern
Between armies of undead, Sorcerors which either stun the whole party or 1 hit kills them, Cocatrices (I believe they're there, I could be wrong and maybe it's Perilisks) which 1 hit kills you, Eye which one hit kills you (Although gives great EXP), and just getting lost falling into holes makes this one my most annoying. Plus I think you need to take a canoe to get there, which makes you fight monsters that poison you.
-
I beat the NES Chaos in like 2 hits
-
with a blood sword you can do it in one.
i think marsh was the worst because i like to explore every square, and that area was full of rooms and stuff. not fun!
-
I remember the Marsh Cave was irritating because of how early in the game I was and how weak I was.
-
when i said chaos shrine i ment the first dungeon -.-
temple of chaos was the one with the masume and chaos :O
-
The Marsh Cave is definitely the hardest dungeon primarily because of how high the difficulty spikes. That event is the game's way of suddenly announcing how hard it will be and that you need to take it seriously and gain levels and plan ahead. Enemies that can poison or petrify you are incredibly tough to deal with because of low player resources at that point in the game; one simple can't afford a lot potions.
Note that none of this applies in the GBA version.
The ice cave is the most "annoying" because it's generally very hard to navigate and I seem to recall there being enemy encounters with 9 cocatrices that could potentially petrify everyone.
Of course, if you do away with diversity and load your party with fighters, you never really have to worry about the game being difficult at all.
-
It's ironic how hardcore FF1 was even though everybody thinks of Dragon Warrior as having ridiculous encounter rates and junk
-
man, it definitely has to be the marsh cave. that shit is pretty fucking tough if you're 10 years old, playing it on a shitty nes that breaks down half the time, and are not exactly accustomed to games that aren't megaman and mario. i remember other dungeons being challenging, but the marsh cave really requires you to sit around and level up for a while if you want to have a chance at finishing it.
actually, i'm kinda curious how many of the people who voted in this topic actually did beat the game on the original nes. i actually don't know anybody else who beat this game when it was NEW

I got the game when I was like 4, and I didn't beat it until I was 12 or so, and it was much harder still than any of the recent rpgs of the time.
I agree with Marsh cave though, it made me quit the game once as a child. Ice Cavern is a close second for having random enemies that instant kill.
-
Btw
Never got to play Final Fantasy growing up because of the one freaking save file :( But I did watch my brother and he only ever got as far as the ice cave
Then I re-bought the game later and played all the way through it
-
Marsh Cave, but in my opinion it's not as difficult as the Cave of Darkness or the Sylx Tower/Dark World dungeons in Final Fantasy III. Those were the most annoying of the NES games, in my opinion.
-
I'm playing the PSP Version.
What i hate the most is the Earthgift Shrine.
there's a time when you have to cross a stupid desert there.
in the PSP Version it has optional bosses.(i think the others have them too.)

wow old topic XD didnt know if ppl still knew about this....
i found the psp version to be a tad more complicated, more than gba but less than nes and marsh cave is/was still a bitch

Yeah those fuckers that i had to fight before reaching main treasure chests were really bitchy!
no wonder actually cause i was in level 10 with all my characters.
I had
Warrior- PK
Monk- Sean
Wht Mage- Celia
Blk Mage- Lance

For me it was definitely the Cave of Earth.
Just insanely annoying because you had to go through it basically twice, once to fight the Vampire, then again to fight Lich, who was pretty tough in the NES version...

I must say, square made a cheap part in that level. I like to call it "The get pwnt zone" and this zone is where monsters appear every step. Its on the first floor and its annoying as fuck. I would rather eat snot from a buffalo's asshole then vomit diarriah up a rabbit's dick than go to that part of the floor(angry video game nerd, lol). Its not good training, its just tedious and annoying.

I rather go to Gaia(FF1'world)g suck a dwarf's sick while doin a chocobo in the ass than playing in that area.it was nuts!
There was another fucky part where i had to go to that place where the NPCs would say the same shit.Lupa Gamhi Dho!
in my opinion
it means
"Do me in the Ass"!lol
Square really sucked at first, you know.

....this is true xD
3D world runner can die for all i care!(one of squares games i loathed)
also, i thought sky temple's maze was unfair challange :(

Why do you type like that? It's really, really irritating.

To be fair, it is off to the side and you don't have to walk through it. Also, you should notice a few steps in that it's a trick. Also, it's the best place in the game to grind for money and I think they made it that way on purpose. Also, Giant's Axe.

Marsh Cave.
Also, I have never used a fighter! They are ugly. Monks and Thieves are both sexy and neat-o.
EDIT: It also means that you get rich even with two sets of magic to buy; until you upgrade to Ninja you can't use half+ of the dropped/looted equipment!

At least in the PSP version I thought a lot of the fun was swapping in different weapons for my fighter in mid-battle. There are a ton of weapons with special properties, and a fighter becomes pretty versataile by the end of the game once you have a million special swords to equip when you need them. I never liked playing with monks because they do not have access to any equipment at all so and your only option with them is a basic attack.
-
The whole game was a dungeon. And, all of it was annoying.
-
I don't think the Earthgift Shrine and pals should actually count, but if they do, Earthgift Shrine, because of the DAMN DESERT.
All the other special dungeons were pretty cool though. So many kickass floors :D
EDIT: I can't seem to remember the Marsh Cave, anyone tell me what exactly there was to do there?

Get the Crown for the king in the Western keep and then. hahahaha he turns in dark elf king astos
you kick his ass in a battle then you get a crystal ey go to matoya's cave and give it to her.you recieve the jolt tonic
and then go back to elfheim,go to the castle and give it to sleeping beauty,(prince)
(dude i should make walkthroughs) :fogetmmh:

The funny thing about this is that I always forget to go to the elf king first and just go straight to the cave. So when he laughs about betraying me and turning into the dark elf I am like ". . . . what?" because I had never talked to him to get sent on an quest by him.
-
I hated the volcano most just for the damage floors (lava). I'd always run out of Potions or MP and had to teleport out and use a tent. I think I did that 3 or 4 times. As for the rest of the dungeons mentioned above, I didn't really care for the mazes since I ran from the battles most of the time and got the hell out as soon as I got what I came for.

I agree it isn't all that conventional, but PkUltimaga still managed to get his point through and I understand what he was trying to say. :)
I never liked the marsh cave for the reasons Ocean outlined, the sheer mass of poison enemies seemed to be more than necessary and I was always running out of items to cure it. FF1 in general was just like that though, it's like a touch of RPG classicism in every direction you go. :)
-
I voted all of them. It's super hard for me to navigate through dungeons. And I just get so darn irritated you know? ANNND I just end up taking a time out and giving it another go. The Shito-Sakura way : )
