Title: Audiosurf - the best audio and visual experience THIS YEAR!!!
Post by: HL on January 17, 2008, 09:28:43 am
Audiosurf is a full game currently buyable on Steam for $10, and it is WORTH it because not only is it COMPLETELY INNOVATIVE but its an amazing experience all around.

Audiosurf takes any song on your PC (in many different supported formats) and analyzes the song. By analyzing the song, Audiosurf creates a track that you, in a ship, travel along. There are many different ships, each ship is its own gamemode. One ship may let you randomly shuffle the cars (more on this later) you have collected randomly, another lets you push cars, another is two ships in one that you control at once, etc.

Audiosurf spawns cars on the track, which you race towards and collect. They are in various colors (based on the song) and you have to get 3+ near each other to score points from them and throw them away.

Its really hard to explain but it is amazing. Its like Klax (if you've played it, if you haven't: shame on you) only with music you choose and cooler.

For songs, songs that are fast and loud are generally the best, they make the track bend, go up and down, etc. Classical music, heavy metal, and rock work the best for COMPLICATED super cool tracks, while country, blues, etc all make the track somewhat basic and slow.

If you want it, PM me, I can hook you up with the full updated version that works without Steam and supports the scoreboards, but I implore you to purchase this game if you even semi enjoy it since it is an indie game that was luckily picked up by Valve for Steam. Support these guys, they deserve it!

Here are completely new screens, showcasing the game with max settings all in Ninja Mono mode:

This is a special effect option called "Rust"

This is the most PC intensive effect called "Paint" that makes everything look like it was painted.

Post songs that you think make amazing tracks here too (lots of bends and curves, basically a wild track!!), and that way others can maybe try them out??

Awesome Song Track List:
Kingdom Hearts 2 One Winged Angel
Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers - Theme Song (Full version)
Hurt - Johnny Cash
Ballroom Blitz - Sweet
Freebird - Lynard Skynard
Poison - Alice Cooper
Vertigo - U2
Take Me Out - Franz Ferdinand
The Final Countdown - Europe
One Winged Angel - Final Fantasy 7 Advent Children
Fury of the Storm + through the fire and flames - DragonForce
Kryptonite - 3 Doors Down

Here are some videos:

This thing kicks ass.  Thanks for finding it.

My first song was Tool's Vicarious... mainly because I had nothing better to put on.  People who listen to Tool know they like to mix up the tempo and they're not so much of a roller coaster ride as much as a WAVY BUMPY HILL ride.  There's parts in all of their songs when they speed up and slow down consistently and it creates this really awesome "slow-mo" effect.  I tried it out with Pushit (live), Stinkfist, and Aenima and I'll probably try it with

Anyways, here's my list of songs I've noted the average scores of so far.  It would be nice if there's a way to keep track of all scores in a table or something:

Vicarious: 20,000 points
Metropolis, Pt 1: 30,000
The Book of Heavy Metal: 15,000
Welcome to the Machine (i couldn't finish this one...)
The Sky Moves Sideways full version: I gave up after 20 minutes.  There's no way I can play through this entire song.
Ride the Lightning: 20,000
Deliverance (edited): 40,000

Before I go to sleep I'm going to try Dragonforce (dear god), Demons and Wizards, and maybe *gulp* download some death metal or classic german speed metal and see how cool consistent double kicks look in this game.

EDIT: Nevermind, I found the high score board...

These play pretty well, in my opinion:

Who was in my Room That Night? -Butthole Surfers
Through the Fire and Flames -JARGONFARCE
Kings of the Nordic Twilight - Luca Turilli
Face of Fact- Kotoko
kasta sten på zaghurim (http://www.rpgmaker.net/~magi/audio/kasta%20sten%20p%e5%20zaghurim.mp3) - Slagsmålsklubben mix???

E: Pipe Dreams is amazing on Audiosurf, but I can't find the right ganon slayer mix with the higher BPM..
http://www.scrubclubrecords.com/music/8bit.html

I will be updating this list as I find more interesting songs.

What modes do people play on? I like using Eraser and Ninja Mono..

Ninja Mono isn't hard at all, you just right click to clear gray blocks in the stack.
This game is much better with electronic or well-produced music because Audiosurf picks out the beats clearly. BETA 2 in a few hours!

Nah, this is why they included all the modes. I find the puzzle modes incredibly boring because you have to work out stuff as you go along (which, come on, is impossible when you have 30+  blocks going past every few seconds.)

However, dodging stuff is always possible no matter how insanely fast it gets, and working towards a no-grey run will keep me interested for.. well, at least as long as a rhythm game usually keeps me interested.

Well Jester, I feel that ninja mono could actually be a LOT of fun, yes. The main thing that turns me off to it is that because the program generates all the blocks, you don't really hit things that stick to a single beat and often there are just long sessions of dodging. I know there's no real way for a computer to create a stage that consistently follows a beat, but it'd be pretty c00l if they created a track editor in the future!

Well, idk I think it gets the beat of songs rather well. I'm with Jester on this one.

Also, if anyone has Klaxons - "Gravity's Rainbow", play that song in Ninja Mono. It gets downright insane towards the end: the lanes are completely flat, you're flying through, the screen STAYS curved around to the left and right the whole time (it flips back and forth), and there's only red blocks for points.

uh, well, every song i've played so far has had a rhythm to it. chorus bits are always the same, and blocks are strewn on the correct beats to either JUST let you continue the combo or set too far apart on purpose to break the combo.

so um, yeah. you do get bits of dodging, but it's on purpose and fits with the theme of the song. if they didn't have those you'd get like 20 zillion points and that isn't the idea of ninja mono.

I really enjoy rhythm games, and that's the source of some of my criticisms. Playing games like Elite Beat Agents, Guitar Hero, and Stepmania where the rhythm is consistent, apparent, and well timed makes me wish that it were more spot on here. I feel in ninja mono more like I'm just trying to dodge and pick up random scattered blocks that don't always follow a consistent rhythm. This is especially apparent in songs that have a lot going on in them, and even though I realize this isn't going to bother everybody, I wish there were a way to give the player more control over a generated stage. I've also noticed some tracks generated with ninja mono are a little buggy and have far too few collectible blocks to even allow the player to get a silver medal. It's good that other people enjoy this though, and maybe I'm just playing this particular mode for the wrong reasons."

its beta 1, the medal value system isn't implemented in it, every song has the same scores per medal

Not necessarily. Due to the fact medals arent finished yet you need 11700 points for bronze in every stage. Some just do not have enough coloured blocks for this.

And Bisse that isn't true :D.

I can see this game helping people improve their coordination, if only a little.

I'm having a lot of fun. Ninja Mono and Pointmaster are probably my favourites so far.

I suppose. The songs I've been playing are typically fast and last a while, but I suppose once I get through some more of my library it won't be that way.

:EDIT:
What's the longest song this thing can take? I tried Porcupine Tree - Strip the Soul (Extended) which is 16:19 and it gave me this "This song is too long for Audiosurf to handle! Sorry!" error.

:EDIT 2:
Wait, Marcus said he played The Sky Moves Sideways, the whole thing, and stopped after 20 minutes. How is this possible when it won't even let me play Strip the Soul (Extended)?

I cheated.  I chopped the song in three 10 minute parts and used the "play next song" button.  I couldn't continue after the 2nd part because I got so bored.  PT is made for casual listening... and sleeping.  I tried to trick the thing into letting me download the latest edition and then altering the ini file and deleting the patch zip but that doesn't work.  I hear on 4chan there's a rapidshit somewhere that has the latest beta so we can play longer songs.  If I find it, I'll zoo it.

Also:

that's a roller coaster ride.  I couldn't even see where the fuck I was going once I hit the downward slope.

If anyone is into 65daysofstatic then try them in the game. Hole was somewhat tough, but it was manageable. The next one I tried though...

That one was a doozy. When the song kicked up, it went fast as can be. Pretty rough one there.

Porcupine Tree isn't so bad. There were some boring parts of course because the song starts slow, and gets real slow during the middle. But most of the time I only noticed whenever it went fast, and that made it fun.

I got like 117,000 on my first try for valley of the damned, but honestly it really match up to merciless death by dark angel

it never goes under like 250 bpm and about half the track is a spiral so you can never see where you are going!

Edit: actually the only part of the whole album under 250bpm is a bass intro to one song so every song pretty much looks like that.

I know. I fucked up at the end.

I grabbed one color block, and moved to the other side before the hill. Right when I popped over the hill I noticed there were two colors on the side I was at before, and I flew past them. :(

I still would've gotten about 75k or something with Clean Finish.

valley of the damned has the WORST ending in the universe, btw

it has 4 coloured blocks then ONE LAST ONE that you can touch JUST after the last 4 have poofed

so you either avoid it or lose the clean finish bonus :(

so annoying to play through that one twice because of that

Yeah, that's all Jester (and I) play.

My best one yet, even though I think I still did rather poorly.

Try that one Jester, though you'll probably kill me. It has quite a bit of slowdown points, even though they usually last one second.

You can only pick up blocks in Pointman, as far as I know.

In Ninja Mono, the point is to gather as many points as you can by collecting and gathering colored blocks, while avoiding grey ones.

And what song are you talking about?

Nice, you're really good at it, haha. I peaked just over 100k (107818), but I think I might try again because I know there were some parts I just did really badly on. yeah dnb is easily the hardest genre, followed by RAINBOW METAL or whatever dragonforce is

valley of the damned is the most fun out of the 4 or 5 df songs ive tried so far, mainly due to the ending. it feels very epic and the combos usually JUST carry on, which is nice.

You guys kicking ass on Ninja Mono, you're awesome. I'm spending too much time on Vegas, so I am not the greatest at dodging the grey blocks. I think I usually pick up in total about.. 10-15 per song at the moment.

Maybe I just need to go with slower songs and then after managing well with them, move back to the speedy songs.

Yeah it is basically something like that. If you typed in for instance 127.0.0.1 gamingw.net in your hosts file it would tell your computer to look for the website at that location, which happens to be your computer's resident address. When you tried accessing GW instead you would get a blank page.

Yeah, of course people still play. Ninja Mono is still the game mode of choice, but it's greatly trumped by Pusher and Eraser Elite. There are more game modes now and song/track generation has apparently been modified slightly.

Just so you know, you can get it for $5 on the Steam right now, so go buy it if you haven't already.

oh no, I already bought it. I thought that was insinuated with me saying that "I'm bummed that I missed the competition". but now that I read it again I guess it isn't really.

Wasn't talking to you in particular, just generally stating that it's only $5 now, because HL said it's $10 a couple posts ago.

I saw something at school today.

Merzbow on Audiosurf.

It was fucked up beyond words.

If you don't know what Merzbow is.. find out at your own risk.

This game NEEDS good electronica music.

Electro/Trance/Techno.

The GOOD stuff though. I'll compile up a bangin' AUDIOPSURF list later.

I bought it off steam about an hour ago, it's alright.

I have just been playing secondhand serenade songs tho, and they are VERY slow, haha. Does the highscores feature work? I don't believe mine is..

eh, I don't know if they will be challenging for you. They're just some songs I think work very cool with the game, either to chill out to or for FAST TEMPO CHALLENGES.

The Box (Untitled Version 1) - Orbital
Smoked Glass and Crome - OTT
100% - Sonic Youth
Spitfire - The Prodigy
Mexicola - QOTSA
'79 aka The Shouty Track - Lemon Jelly (WARNING: MAY INDUCE PSYCHADELIC EXPRIENCE)
Doctor - Orbital (If you stick this one out it is really worth it. (Especially if you are a fan of Doctor Who!))
Voodoo People - The Prodigy
