Post by: cowardknower on January 19, 2008, 02:51:17 am
Ok so i am finding some old school gospel very interesting and cool to listen to
particularly the darker stuff

couple groups ive liked so far are the blind boys of alabama (well, well, well is a fucking good song)
and the dixie hummingbirds are another i just stumbled onto.

anybody else like this kinda stuff?
got any reccomendations?

Blind Boys are more blues than gospel imho even if they are completely religious but if you want modern stuff (with an older sound) HEH NOPE Mike Farris has a good album called Salvation in Lights that has loads of balls.

there's also Soulsavers and a bunch of modern stuff but you said older stuff anyways so I'll shut up.

most old gospel suffers from sounding the same so I've never been into it!

jon spencer blues explosion are pretty awesome when it comes to modern blues hiphop soulpfunk (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=90iaLaPMa9g) but if you want some older stuff check out robert johnson (his songs give out chills (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yd60nI4sa9A)) or some speed glue n shinki (a 60's psychedelic blues band (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QTtyCGoz3lM)).

I cant really tell you artists that are great because to get my blues I listen to blues radio but yeah I can tell you who to avoid:

Stevie Ray Vaughan (about as blues as Trivium is metal if you get the comparison)
Buddy Guy
John Lee Hooker after 1975
Keb Mo

basically in my opinion the best king of blues is either Delta Blues, Blues from the 60s or anything with John Mayall in/on it. but yeah thats because I've been severely over exposed to bad electric blues thanks to my dad so I am a bit biased against something that a lot of people find to be very good I guess

yeah, i enjoyed ascendancy (not new album or old one though).

but on topic, i will be checking this stuff out.  the more i think about it, the more i realize its deff the blues aspect of the songs that appealed to me so we are on the right track guys!  there iwll be a big bonus at the end of this quarter for everyone if we can pull through!
