Yeah, I'm a bit poor, so I don't pick up consoles or games until a few years after they're made. Still, I should be able to gett lot's of suggestions on this one. I need some advice on what games to get for PS2. I'm a fan of pretty much any type of game except puzzle, simulation, or driving.
Here's what I do have:
Kingdom Hearts 2
Gladius
Guitar Hero 2 & 3
Here's what I've heard I should get:
Final Fantasy X & XII
Okami
Devil May Cry
If anyone has any suggestions, recommendations, or some advice on what games to get, please help. -looks at current money stash- I only have so much money, and I really want to get my money's worth out of the PS2. Thanks to anyone who is kind enough to help.

Katamari Damacy, Chulip (although it's sort of a sim, so I dunno if you'd like it), Odin's Sphere, and Tales of the Abyss are all pretty good.
I wouldn't bother with FFX, but FFXII and Okami are definitely worth getting. Oh, and Persona 3 just came out, like, half a year ago. I haven't played it yet, but I've heard nothing but good things.
-
you should definately check out Star Wars Battlefront 2! mad fun game.
If it'd your kind of game, definately pick up a Copy of San Andreas/vice city aswell.
-
Good luck finding Okami. Capcom literally printed about 70,000 copies of the game.
Marcus' general recommendations (I.E. WEIRD SHIT)
Psychonauts
Ico
Shadow of the Colossus
Okami
Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne
Freedom Fighters
Beyond Good and Evil
Killer 7 (you might not like it but it's like... 10 bux)
Now, if you like action or platformer games, I would recommend:
Jak 1-3 (pretty good series)
Ratchet and Clank/Going Commando/Up Your Arsenal/Deadlocked (another decent series that's easy to find and cheap)
God of War 1 and 2 (short games but pretty fulfilling)
Devil May Cry 1,2,3 (number 2 is pretty bland but they're all available as a collection)
This is everything off the top of my head. If I think of something else I'll post it.
-
I'd recommend FFX-2 over FFX or FFXII, actually.
But besides Jak series I'd say everything Marcus mentioned is pretty good.
Also get GOD HAND if you can find it. It's like 20 bucks and my favorite game ever.
-
Some people don't like FFX, but I thought it was an extremely solid game in the series, and would highly recommend it. Other than that, if you are a Metal Gear Solid fan AT ALL, Metal Gear Solid: Substance is an amazing game. Not only does it include the entirety of MGS2 plus some other stuff, it has literally 50 hours of extra VR missions, scenarios, weapon trials, etc.
-

Do this if you want to feel like you just wasted 40 hours. The battle system in X-2 is great, but that's about it. FFX and XII both have much more content and better hard "secret" bosses. Plus X's story rapes X-2.
Some games I've found fun over the years:
Star Ocean 3
Dark Cloud 1 and 2
Devil May Cry 1 and 3
Metal Gear Solid
I'll post more if I can think of any.
-
Xenosaga
Ratchet and Clank (2nd one was my favorite)
Psychonauts
FFX
Time Splitters 3 (very enjoyable FPS)
Bully
Jak and Daxter (all but the 3rd one)
Resident Evil 4
God of War
Random ass list, all quite enjoyable games =]

Final Fantasy X.
-
Tekken 5... With this you need nothing else...
Except most of the games already mentioned. :fogetshifty:
-
metal gear solid 3
-
GTA: San Andreas + pretty much all other suggestions.
-
Shadow of the Colossus and the Sly Cooper series are my reccomendations. Lego StarWars, also.
-
lots of paper that needs weighing down
[canned ][/canned]
if i had to suggest one game, i'd suggest killer 7. i don't know if the ps2 version is the best port imaginable, but it's really the best game on the console from the standpoint of videogame storytelling. if you're looking for a really NEW experience, definitely pick it up. you can find it really cheap now.
beyond that, i guess the best advice i can give you is to read up on final fantasy x beforehand to see if it's for you. it's EXTREMELY hit and miss with people. you'll either really like it or find it profoundly insulting. only game i've ever played that actually makes me nauseous.
-
oh yea, and Tekken Tag Tournament
-
It's been mentioned already but beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil beyond good and evil
hint: beyond good and evil is a very good but very underappreciated game :(
-
metal gear solid 3
Definitely this. Great for replayability; I used to play through it every few weeks. MGS: Substance is also good for this.
-
I think MGS1 is far superior to 2, which is far superior to 3. 3 is just...incredibly boring and has the most boring boss in gaming history (the end)
-
GTA San Andreas
Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3
Guitar Hero 1
Jak series
Ratchet and Clank series
Resident Evil Code Veronica X
Resident Evil 4
Kingdom Hearts 1
Gitaroo Man
Burnout 3: Takedown
-
suikoden 3 and 5
don't get the jak series if you get motion sickness even in small amounts because the will give you the worst headaches.

Man, I disagree. Metal Gear Solid 3 was an excellent experience... All the additional features were fun, and the expanded gameplay options were very welcome. CQC was an awesome addition to the series. Also, it's the first Metal Gear game to really expand on the story of Big Boss. It was great all-around.
Anyways back on topic, definitely buy the Metal Gear Solid series as well as Resident Evil 4. The Prince of Persia trilogy is also worth a look.
-
reading this topic i realised there are quite a lot of interesting ps2 games i meant to play but totally forgot. so i'm ordering shadow of the colossus, ico and killer 7 from amazon used just now.
i don't really feel like i've got any advice to add to the topic right now, though.

Odin Sphere is a crazy brawler-RPG with one of the few truly moving RPG stories. It's also gorgeous, but it lags during fights against the vaginaspider and demented dragon.
Xenosaga (3 is the best overall and pretty stand-alone; the others are... well, very good yet very bad) has excellent characters. I also hear that it has a story but I have no idea what jappened (see what I did there)? XS3's battle system is basically the most rapid turn-based battle system ever.
Jak 1 and 3 are both great platformers, but totally different. Jak 2 is just... no. You do not want to play that ridiculously unfair game.
Final Fantasy X-2 is my favorite game. I like the cheesy girl-power story and love Leblanc. It's sort of like FFV on estrogen.
-
The only one I could recommend that hasn't been mentioned yet is Shadow Hearts. This is a good time to start with the PS2 since all of these games are great but will be dirt cheap, although a few might be tricky to find.
-
If you like fighting games, check out Guilty Gear XX. Accent Core just came out and I think it's really solid, and still available brand new in a game store ($30 too). There're those that prefer the earlier versions of the game (Guilty Gear X2), which you might find used, but I'd go for Accent Core if you're not worried about your favorite character getting nerfed in a game you've never played.
-
Shadow Hearts 2.
It's all you need.
-
if you're in to fighting games- TEKKEN 5!
-
Suikoden III, TotA, Marvel vs Capcom II (if you can find it)
I extremely dont reccomend any FFs for the PS2, but thats imo. To me they were just terrible. I think Rogue Galaxy is also a good game if you are in it for the fighting and not the awful story.
-
Final fantasy x is definitely worth it. x-2 and xii were..... meh.

X to me had great gameplay but a weak story line. Once again, thats just my take of it. If the story is weak, no matter how great the gameplay is I wont get into it. All of them up to IX were great though.

Shadow Hearts
Oh man, definitely Shadow Hearts. I really hate Shadow Hearts 2's ZANY STORYLINE compared to the first one but it's a better game overall. The third one is rather terrible though.
-

Yeah I think that FFX-2 is actually one of the most brilliant games ever made. In terms of avant-garde presentation, I'd put it with games like Killer 7 and Shadow of the Colossus or whatever. Unfortunately I think that the J-Pop parody concept is a little too sophisticated for a lot of people. :(

What? Nuh uh.
Whats so zany about The town of Domremy has stubbornly refused to fall to the German advance at the beginning of World War I thanks to the aid of a "demon" which seems to defend it. Lieutenant Karin Koenig of the German army is sent along with a person who claims to be an Inquistor from the Vatican, Nicolas Conrad, to acquire a means of exorcising this demon, the Holy Mistletoe. However, the 'Demon of Domremy' is actually the Harmonixer Yuri from the first Shadow Hearts. Nicolai casts the curse of the Mistletoe on Yuri, which causes him to lose his fusions and weakens him; in addition, this reveals that Nicolas is a member of the sorcerous faction called Sapientes Gladio who wishes to rule the world through dark magic.

No matter what you do get it needs to include Ico and Shadow of the Colossus. They're both original, refreshing games and are probably the most epic/emotional experiences i've had when it comes to videogames.
-
.hack//gu and metal gear solid 3 snake eater and god of war 2 aaaand persona 3
-
Most DEFINITELY Final Fantasy X. It's like ten bucks and it'll keep you busy for a long while. It did for me, anyway. I'm STILL playing it. Probably my favorite FF as far as story goes.
My opinion, though, Final Fantasy X-2 is worth the cash, but doesn't live up to the first one. ...Final Fantasy XII was a big fat waste of money. Most definitely my least favorite FF to date, but different strokes and all that. Who knows, you may love it.
Hmm...I'd also go with Tales of the Abyss and Tales of Legendia (to a lesser extent; it's nowhere near as good).
Definitely all three Xenosagas. I own them all, but have yet to finish the second one. The first one is excellent. The battle system is perhaps a little too slow, but at least it's fun. The second one kinda sucks. The story is still intriguing, but the battles are devoid of any fun at all. I hear the third one mixes the fast paced battle system of two with the fun of the first one, all the while keeping the story interesting, so...go for all of those.
Seeing as I've never played any of the Suikoden games, aside from the first one on PSone (which is fantastic), I can't really recommend them. I've heard that the forth one sucks and the fifth one rocks, but I dunno.
Also, if you're really desperate and/or into the Final Fantasy VII storyline, I guess check out Dirge of Cerberus. I'm a big FFVII fan and I could barely get through it (and by it, I mean the horrible gameplay), but the story is neat, as it expands on the world after the events of FFVII and Vincent's (along witht the other characters') backstory.
-
It's been mentioned, but you essentially have no choice but to buy Resident Evil 4.
Shadow Of The Collosus is probably worth buying too, but you should know what you're getting yourself into before you buy that game. It's really not very conventional.
-
by the way if you have a wii (which i doubt since you JUST got a ps2 but just in case!!), get resident evil 4 for that instead, as well as okami since apparently they're porting it over.
other than that i can't think of anything that hasn't been mentioned. shadow hearts is a pretty fun game but it seriously has the worst dialog of all time which really ruined it for me but uh the battle system's pretty interesting at least.
