Slightly late but:
Heh, I don't know what to exactly but if it's a rock it's definitely a very impressive rock.

Is it Bigfoot? A Tusken Raider from the first "Star Wars" movie? Or just a rock?
British newspapers went crazy Wednesday morning about an image from Mars that appears to show a humanoid figure descending a shallow hillside.
The "alien" is actually a blurry detail in a huge panoramic photograph snapped on the edge of Mars' Gusev crater by NASA's Spirit rover in early November, and posted on NASA's Web site on Jan. 2.
Naturally, it took the Photoshop skills of dedicated bloggers to find the "humanoid."
"NASA scientists have been puzzled by the peculiarly life-like image," declared the Times of London, despite the apparent fact that no one from NASA has had any comment.
The skeptical Web site BadAstronomy.com, however, scoffed, "Puhlllleeeeze. A man? It's a tiny rock only a few inches high. It's only a few feet from the rover!"
Other British papers saw the humo(u)r in the story, with the Sun theorizing that it was Detective Gene Hunt, the drunken, sexist policeman from the BBC time-traveling crime series "Life on Mars."
"It's Usama bin Laden!" declared one Times of London commenter. "All this time we thought he was in Pakistan."
-
Interesting. I'd say it was obviously not real, but the shadows of the dress look pretty convincing... :D
-
You could name the topic "SCIENTISTS FIND LIFE IN MARS"
-
Didn't they ALREADY prove this was a rock?
-
Man, am I the only one who found that pic extremely creepy/disturbing?
-
Didn't they ALREADY prove this was a rock?
It couldn't really be anything else, and I'm slightly late with this.
-
The face is so much better imo
-
I found another vid

It's a 4" rock. (http://www.badastronomy.com/bablog/2008/01/21/speaking-of-dumb-mars-claims/)
-
But I see so much of this' date=' and there is no lower limit to the dumbosity of such claims, that it just makes sense to figure on the lowest common denominator.[/quote']
is this even english
also 4" rock more like 4" action figure
-
the guy says "figger" instead of "figure"
thats enough to convince me that this is a haox
-

God, British people are so lame.

dude, british.
-
Doozer is right, it is a rock. If you view the whole image that the rover took, you can easily line it up with other rocks the same distance that are obviously only a few inches large. This is what happens when idiots have photoshop.
-
God, British people are so lame.
forget you, i had a chuckle
*laffs*
-
whatever. that rock bullshit is a government coverup.
-
So is it osama bin laden or not?
Marcus?
-
Rock or not it creeps me out.
-
i figger it probably is, mark

FACE ON MARS
(http://www.gamingw.net/pubaccess/26992/mars_2409_narrowweb__300x337%2C0.jpg)
-
i figger the face is already in the video kaworu/usama
-
I don't think this is a person or anything, but it's way better if you actually look at the whole image yourself and find it.
http://www.nasa.gov/images/content/207495main_Spirit.jpg
I don't know, it's just much spookier if you spot it yourself. All these closeups and zoom ins (at shitty resolution) really kill it for me.
edit: To me, all the rocks around it (which have that layered look) pretty much prove that it's just a rock that has been beaten by dust for a long time. Still, the image is awesome because it looks like it could be a desert on Earth, but... it's on another planet! That is cool enough for me, to be honest.
-
Mars looks like No Country for Old Men
Edit: NO COUNTRY FOR SPACEMEN

kaempfer that image is so sweet its crazy to think that it's another fucking planet
but what general area of the photo is osama on? also whats up with that wavy blue rock stuff it looks so cool! its interesting how a picture of fucking dirt and rocks can be so enthralling.

Color images from space are actually multiple exposures taken through different filters. For example, you could take three black and white images, shot through red, green, and blue filters, then project them onto a wall using the correct backlighting and you'd see a full-color image. I've heard that the filters used by spacecraft (or in this case the landers) aren't necessarily intended to produce colors that are close to reality. For example, certain colors in images from the Hubble were actually detected as X-rays and then converted to a color like red for human viewing.

The face on mars is absolutely fantastic. Proper Han Solo.
(how else would you pronounce figure? Like...fee gur?)
-
Man, what the FUCK kind of camera can take a picture that huge? Shit, im amazed, and also, it really does look like a normal earth desert doesnt it :D
-
http://www.nasa.gov/images/content/207495main_Spirit.jpg
OH MY GOD THIS PHOTO CLEARLY SHOWS EVIDENCE OF WATER ON MARS
-
Everyone's ignoring the obvious.
There's a mars base right in the foreground.
-

well all those mars nasa images are panoramic composites of multiple images (I just checked wikipedia, and it seems the rover has 4 cameras that take "a panoramic mosaic of four pancam images high by three wide")
edit: that was just an example for one certain photograph. Either way, there are 3 cameras taking multiple photos and then compositing them together (probably back on earth)
edit2: I think what's more interesting is that NASA has huge TIFF versions of these photographs available for public download that are over 400MB's! Imagine all that data being sent through space via satellites...... from a planet MILLIONS of miles away.
I want that net connection......
-
Sweet stuff ASE :D
Also, Ive been looking for a while, but I cant find that image on the panorama.
-
but what general area of the photo is osama on?
He's right in the bottom left. If you go all the way to the bottom left and follow the left most edge up (about two-three inches away iirc from the side of the image) he should be there.
edit: Also, apparently the humble telescope transmits like five hundred terabytes of data each day (or something, I heard about it a long time ago). That's ridiculous!

I think people would just like to believe so much in life on other planets that they start thinking they are seeing what is not really there. I admit that looks similar to shadow or silhouette of a body, but my reason tells me that it's actually not. optical illusions rule!1

Pareidolia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pareidolia). You pretty much hit the nail on the head. It is a problem, because it really ruins credibility for any geniune evidence, since you have millions of people who think they see the Virgin Mary in a piece of toast.
