Title: Recent comic purchases?
Post by: Kaworu on February 12, 2008, 03:04:24 pm
ok guys, let's sit up on the sofa, get some nice hot chocolate and discuss our recent comic purchases, and our makeup.
Recenntly, yeah I've been getting countdown and IDW's Transformers stuff (not their reprints). Last month I got vol1 of Star Wars Legacy, which is pretty great. The Skywalker is a Jedi bounty hunter and there are lots of Sith. It's interesting as it's not any recognisable characters so it's all new. Also my brother's been getting Green Lantern stuffs lately, which is cool. The Sinestro Corps war is other but the arc is still going on.
Today I for a few volumes of Tintin comics. I have them all on my harddrive, but there's nothing like reading real comics.

you guys:

This week, my weekly pull included:
Annihilation Conquest #4
Moon Knight #15
Ms. Marvel #24
Uncanny X-Men #495
Amazing Spiderman #549
The Boys #15

Yeah, I know they're not the best but whatever.

I just got a call from my local store that my ordered copies of Glister 1-3 and Courtney Crumrin came in.  I'll post scans once I get back.

Last week, I bought:

Umbrella Academy 1-5
Omega the Unknown 1-3
Mouse Templar 2-3
Y the Last Man (final issue)

Next week I'll probably catch up on all the Fables I missed.  Mouse Templar really kicked off after the second issue (issue 1 was pretty horrible) and Omega the Unknown is a remake of an old series by Steve Gerber (RIP) and it's pretty much my favorite thing Marvel has ever commissioned.  I'm pissed that Marvel seems to have completely forgotten about Halo Uprising as Bendis is a somewhat decent writer and did some justice to the Halo universe.  I'm also pissed that the new issue of Mouse Guard isn't out yet.  I love that series.

I may also pick up Deathward which looks kinda cool.

I'm not much into recent American comic books. I just don't like the art style and colours of todays comics. Last comic books I bought were a crap load of old Superman series comics from the 70's.

There are tons of styles and coloring methods out there, could you elaborate a bit?

I mainly meant things like the new Superman and Spiderman Comics. The style and just the basic way the characters are drawn look vastly different from earlier styles and I just don't like it. It almost seems like they're trying to add some Anime influence into their drawings or something and it just doesn't blend well.

Like the way Aunt May is drawn in this scares me a little:

The problem with long running mainstream comics is that everything is owned by the editors who put give it away to a random group of artists and writers.  Some artists are really competent while others not quite so.  It wouldn't be so bad if they didn't constantly change hands every two issues.  Maybe let a single artists work on a comic for a year or so and then switch but these guys do whatever they can to make a quick buck and I usually buy stuff like Action Comics and X-Men based solely on who's drawing the thing, not the actual storylines.

America loves icons.  Everyone knows that the guy in blue and red spandex with an S on his chest is Superman.  Sometimes I wish American comics would follow the way of manga or European comics and END the series at a logical point but the American reader is generally interested in seeing familiar characters in new settings which probably explains why the universes and timelines jump around so much.  These days, I can't even tell what's canon and what isn't.

Yeah it's written by Gerard whatever, lead singer of My Chemical Romance but the comic isn't all emo and dumb and shit.  I don't follow the music industry but I read the comic before learning who wrote it.  I'm glad it wasn't the other way around because I wouldn't even touch it then.

It's more of a korean style than an anime style, as quite a few korean artists broke into the big leagues in the 90's with what was a really interesting and unique look. The differences between anime-style and k-style are enough and have kinda caused massive arguements on the nets, it's really gay. anime/manga style ain't really broke into mianstream comics that much in comparison.

The only comic I've bought recently has been Essential Iron Fist v1... Excellent 70's kung-fu superhero action. Plus, it includes a scene where Iron Fist punches a robot alien so hard that its head explodes. And in the end, isn't that what comics are all about?

Oh I love the way manga/anime is done and the way the older 70's-80's american comics are done, but not this Korean/American stuff. Maybe I just don't like Boycott Korea.  :naughty:

I missed last week and will probably miss this week, too.  I'll be spending the money on an airsoft game.

Last one I picked up was MAX Punisher.  Still my favorite title to date.  Ghost Rider has been sucking from day one, yet I still pick it up.  I don't know why.  Also picked up DMZ, 100 Bullets, Dark Horse Conan and the Savage Sword V1 compilation.  Bunch of stuff.

btw, anyone actually read through Pax Romana and liked it?  I found it very difficult to read and couldn't finish issue 1.  Also, Matt Fraction is awesome.  I also read a lot from Garth Ennis.  If it's got his name on it, I'll probably pick it up.

Personally, I think the art in a lot of current comics are excellent for the most part, k- inspired or not.  I prefer them over manga style either way.  I also like seeing different artist's interpretation of characters.  Greg Pak's Hulk is pretty awesome.  Still, it does have to be consistent.  Sometimes it happens that an issue has 2 different artists, usually due to a time constraint.  And I think only 52 consistently has at least 2 different artists in every issue because of said time constraint.

And no, I don't think all American comics should have a definite ending.  People enjoy reading about these characters.  I don't think the setting has much to do with it, if at all.  Just as long as they're there and that the setting is not too over the top.  I really don't think anyone cares that Spidey celebrated his 30th anniversary almost 20 years ago, yet his character was already a college student when he first appeared, making him almost 50 by now, so you can see how the fans have kept him alive all this time.

Oh, and here's to hoping Deadpool get's his own title.  Cable did, and he's boring.

I didn't get any _new_ comics... I am somewhat disappointed with new comics... However, I just recently ordered The absolute Kingdom Come, The absolute Batman: Hush, Death: The high cost of living, Death: The time of your life, The Sandman: Dream Hunters and some other shit I can't remember right now.

Absolute Hush was actually pretty cheap, like $45 including shipping.
Also yeah, I went insane ordering books and comics because the Dollar hit an historical low here at my country so I pretty much took the chance before it went back up (And it's already started)

In all, I spent like $300-$400...

Absolute is DC's line of tpb rereleases in big ass hardcover form. They're oversized and some with a shitload of extras as well as a hefty price tag.
