Title: Gantz
Post by: Kaworu on February 15, 2008, 11:58:25 pm
hmm a series I finally finished watching like just before Christmas. Gantz is essentially some people die, but are brought "to life" and have to hunt aliens whilst wearing sexy plugsuits. It's gotten very renound for it's violence, breasts and attitude towards "decency", but is actually quite cool. The main character kei is imo very unlikable, he has no redeeming qualities as a person, yet you get drawn into him and by mid-way through the series, he is suddenly kinda cool, yet still unlikable.
hmm, like the first half is very much gay. Some interesting ideas, but pacing issues and HEY BLOOD AND BOOBS really get annoying, but as a series, it gets really cool near the end on their third mission, which is so bizarre and (suprisingly for an anime) full of tension (not just grunting and power levels!!!). The last part of the story starts off really good, but then goes all Battle Royale 2 on us and spouts anti-american rhetoric.

I've also been following the manga (not caught up yet), which really is so much better in that it has no real pacing issues, everything is fleshed out much greater, and the characters have a lot more progression. There are lots of interesting and cool ideas, and talking dinosaurs which make it a fun read.

I downloaded this but I haven't watched it yet. I will comment on it after I finish it. I have 3 series (64 total eps) ahead of it though.

all I can say is when you get round to it, don't let the butterdog bit put you off.

I've only seen a little bit of Gantz, but I thought it was pretty decent. I really didn't like any of the characters, though.

Yah the characters are really unlikable, but they verymuch seemed to be that way on purpose.

I only remember seeing the first episode. At the time I really didn't like the artwork but now I do. Are the characters better in the manga?

Never seen the show, and don't really want to. I absolutely LOVE the comic, though, and read it all over the course of one weekend sometime last year up until the hiatus. I suppose it's been a long time now and I bet there's enough to catch up on. Thanks for reminding me, I'll have to check up on it tonight.

Also, Muscle Rider is the best.

So I just read the first 10 chapters of the manga and I'm really interested in this. I guess I'll check out the anime first... I hate it when the anime and manga of a series are different from one another ;'(

i remember reading the manga when i was like 15, and i was drawn into it pretty well but i don't know how much of that was GIANT BOOBS

i got up to the point where there's some vampires or something, i'm pretty sure the author just puts whatever he's thinking about in there / if he wants to write another comic he will instead change gantz

I watched the anime, and enjoyed it a lot.

Then I read up to the latest issue of the manga (although haven't checked back for a couple months on any new ones) and the anime sucks. The manga is really quite awesome, I love some of the ideas they have. I'd recommend anybody checking it out. There are a lot of funny/horrible things in it.

And in the manga doesn't seem as much as just about boobs as the anime did.

The manga is more explicit, but lightyears better than the anime. Kurono grows as a very likeable character and the story makes you question life alot. I wish the anime just wasnt like a "free sample" of the manga.

Edit: Kurono's voice in the eng dub was very obnoxious. Anyone else think so?

This show was retardly weird but I ended up finishing it.

There is too many pointless deaths, sort of like Elfied.

they're not really pointless since you know, it's dangerous and all :/
It would've been pointless if it dwelled on each of them, but it went about them very casually because of the very obvious war analogy.

This is a spoiler for your information....

If you want to see main characters die like nothing continue to watch this show. I'm not saying it wasn't good, I'm just saying that it was kind of pointless. I actually enjoyed the show somewhat for it's weirdness.

it's not pointless... it was like THE MAIN POINT. The series is an analogy for soldiers being made to fight in wars they don't understand because they're ordered to, right. The deaths are the whole resolve thing that how can you continue to fight in a war you don't understand, how can you blindly take orders when your closest comrades are all dead, how will this effect you etc. like Kei . The Manga kind of goes further and goes into crap like more personal loss with before it does randomly decide to hit a brick wall with Vampires and shit, but the anime really drones that on with it's final episodes, making it somewhat unbearably obvious.

I was talking to vesper about gantz a while back when I first found it. I read the manga first and haven't stopped reading it since. I've heard that the anime leaves things with a question still so I didn't bother to watch it yet.

The manga has horrible pacing though imo. After 250+ chapters, you are still wondering what is the point of Gantz. Don't get me wrong, I love how Gantz has a really unique concept but I'm sure there is more indepth to Gantz than what is shown. I'm sure there are more things that you wonder about when you read it but the series hasn't really explained any of those questions.

Ive watched every episode thus far, the beginning is a pervy fest, but I like how the characters act realistically.

Kurono's english voice just makes everything funnier. I could not stop laughing when they were running away from the train in episode 1.

Kato: Kei, are you all right back there?!

Kurono: Of course not!! (I'm gonna die I'm gonna die I'm so fucking scared a-)

Kato: An opening! Look for an opening, there's gotta be one!

Kurono: THERE'S NOTHING, DAMNIT!!!

Oh man I wish I had a clip or something...

His voice is so fucking annoying to me. *shrug*

Haha, but i will agree that the one episode where he is fighting that giant bird thing and he is like COCKADOODLE DOO, MOTHER FUCKER I had to pause the DVD and lol out loud for a couple minutes.

Edit: All of it is on www.veoh.com, or at least it was if you are looking for clips.

Oh man, I'm loving this series. I finished the anime, caught up with the manga, and even downloaded bought the PS2 game. Great stuff. I may decide to rewatch the anime in English for giggles.
