This is a general topic for the entire fighting game genre. YOU LIKE FIGHTING GAMES? Well I like them too, so lets talk about them.
This thread covers:
-fighting games
-#capcom, #1 channel for fighting games
-#capcom's new ranking battles & tournaments.
So after a successful Season 1 Ranking Battles all around (http://www.gamingw.net/forums/index.php?topic=65261.0) I think it's time to start a new Season of Ranking Battles, consisting of more games, more matches, and (hopefully) more opponents!
First things first...
#capcom is a channel for fighting games. If you like fighting games at all, this is the channel for you. If you want to learn to play fighting games, this is the channel for you. If you want to beat someones face in in a game of Street Fighter 2 or Garou, this is the channel for you.

To clear up some misconceptions:
-We play and talk about more than Capcom fighting games. SNK, Sammy, etc are all allowed!
-You don't have to pay for anything! We use ROMS & Emulators, or pirated games. Though, we do recommend you support the genre for paying for things if you do enjoy them, of course.
-You don't have to play at all, you can come to just hang out & discuss fighting games. As long as you love the genre!
Do not ask in the topic for links to ROMs. Common sense should tell you what to do: PM me or ask in the channel.

Ranking Battles + Tournaments:
OK, well, Raziel is going to be departing for like, 1-2 months cause of real life issues :(
I'm not quite sure what alls going to be done for Ranking Battles + Tournaments fully yet, but the way I see it we have:
-Super Smash Bros. Brawl Tournament (Hosted by Sarhan, who needs to visit this channel goddamnit.)
-Garou - Mark of the Wolves Season 2 Ranbats (shoe in, 90% of the damn channel plays!)
-Melty Blood: Act Cadenza Season 2 Ranbats (shoe in, but I might need to find someone else to host this for me.)
-???
I'm wanting to add another game to the mix, but I don't know which. This is pretty much up to you guys, but make sure its something that can be easily gotten for free, and netplayable easily.
Some of what I'm thinking:
Guilty Gear XX #Reload (for the PC)
A King of Fighters game (idk, 98...2k2?)
Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo

Garou Ranbat Infos:
Starting Date + Time: March 1st at 10:00PM Central, then meet every Saturday at the same time after.
Ending Date: June 7th.
No prize at this time.
After June 7th, we will have a normal big tournament as we usually do, then the 3rd Season will start.
You get 1 point per win, round robin, best 3 out of 5 rounds, 1 match, if a person quits no one gets their points from that person, if a person forfeits to you, you get 1 point.
Goat: 19 points.
LordTyphoon: 17 points.
MaD: 13 points.
handsome lamb: 7 points.
Bisse: 3 points.
Man-o-War: 2 points.
Vectorman: 2 points
DeadPhoenix: 2 points.
Polarity: 1 point.

Not yet posted. Looking for someone to help run these that can do it at a good time every Sunday FOR SURE.

As for the genre in general, I am really fucking looking forward to playing Street Fighter 4 & the new King of Fighters. Seeing the old Capcom & SNK rivalry back brings a tear to my eye ;-;
I mostly just play Garou - Mark of the Wolves anymore, what games do you guys play? I used to play a lot more but I don't really have time for all this other stuff. I play SC3 casually, and I've played DOA4, and I play Tekken DR at a friends house, but thats about it.

Speaking of upcoming fighters, am I the only one disappointed with the Soul Caliber series? The original on the DC kicked so much ass, but the 4th one looks really terrible. They've just gotten worse and worse.

Ranking Battles, we basically all meet on 1 day in the channel, and play each other in a round robin, and you get points per win. Then at the end of the season all the points are added up and OH SHITS you see who has the most. It's basically a series of mini round robin tournaments, really.
And yes, I agree about SC.

The only fighting game I have played and thoroughly enjoyed is the Tekken series. I have never liked Street Fighter very much, but I do have Marvel vs Capcom and X-Men vs Street Fighter.
I enjoyed both of those but I only played with the shortcut keys on for the special attacks.

It gives a pretty good insight of what most of us can do, ie: DN can do one thing: get destroyed by my Hoku and play a random ass Grant and Bisse's grant doesn't bother hitconfirming because he's gonna hit you with the super anyway because of 100+ ms lag.
It's still pretty decent quality videos, not Howard Arena level of play but it's above the online average for sure.

This is totally understandable depending on your keyboard (i am assuming you meant for the PC)
I used to have a really shitty kb that like, couldn't read 2 buttons at the same time, so anything that wasnt SF/Garou was impossible.

I would have mentioned 3S but we had a tournament for it not too long ago iirc.
In conclusion: KoFXI should be emulated soon so I could be all over that.

GGPO is lagless online play with like anyone (even across the border dudes)

ggpo is a pretty big reason, it is flawless play it is LITERALLY as good as playing as if someone is right next to you, all the time, for free.
It is better than X-Box Live / PSN most of the time.

I like fighting games, Im just really terrible at them, and I'm still getting used to that hip lingo used by the players.
(Sadly the only one I REALLY like playing is KMGP, and that has no online mode or whatever)
I guess I should download IRC again.

We should host some form of gathers as wells, you know, like the ones the GW Soldat crew had. Maybe play a set game every Friday nights or just try to get as many people online, idk.

Act Cadenza is a commercial game, you can either buy it or find it through torrents. Use google for both.
For Mame, we use Mame32k 0.64. It's the most stable release to play Garou on.

Also, we use the p2p version of kailleraclient.dll found here (http://kaillera.movsq.net/#).
Just put it in your root folder, replacing your server-only one if you like. Though I keep it because its more stable for kaillera servers in my experience.

If you have dialup, it probably isn't a good idea at all, most of these ROMs are 5-60MB.

I hate college though. Time restrictions suck otherwise I'd be kicking ass left and right (probably not, but I'd be above average). That's the only reason I never got around to playing you, DN. When spring break rolls around, I should be able to play with all of you a bit (and I'll probably get addicted and keep playing afterwards). Once Brawl rolls around, you'll see me in #capcom a fairly decent amount (assuming other people there will be playing). I've just noticed I use parentheses very often (it's kind of annoying).
Don't worry, DN. I'll start visiting #capcom soon enough. Just give me a few more days.

I never said it was impossible, but then you have packets to send during netplay, and well, it's just not going to be good. It's gonna lag.

I like fighting games but haven't played them for years and would like to get involved with a tournament here even though I would most certainly get annihilated. Playing on Saturdays works out for me, too, because I have a weekday schedule. I'm aware I have a history of dropping out of GW events but I'm certainly up for a few fighting games! I don't hang out on IRC very often though.

I gave up on them since Street Fighter II when I would play with my sister and attempt to actually put it combo codes and then get completely annihilated when she would just mash her palm into the controller and do some crazy death move repeatedly. :(
Since then I think I've only played some Mortal Kombat (single player, I only got to like the 3rd guy), and some Killer Instinct (on the easiest setting, I think I may have actually beat this one...).

Huzzah. So I finally downloaded mIRC and joined #capcom for a bit in preparation for Brawl. I probably won't be on there much since gamestop's getting Brawl soon and I want to practice, but I'll be back on often around tournament time.

So I haven't actually played SFA 3 (I played the original SFA a bit) and I was reading up on Dan on the internet and apparently one of his super special attacks is a custom taunt where you waste all of your stored power to humiliate your opponent? That's sooooooo awesome.

I can't look into the future, Ono (maker of SF4 rite now, also did Onimusha too!) said he would like to make a sequel to it afaik, and EA doesn't have the rights with marvel anymore, so I think it's just a matter of a) SF4 getting done and b) Marvel wanting to work with capcom again.

True enough. Ive always wanted to see another, and I hope this time they will remove the simplicity of special move inputs. A noob could pick up that game and own in 15 min.
SF4 looks good though....thats all Im waiting for (SOUL CALIBUR KILLER, hopefully.)

I know nobody cares for KoF here (well, at least not the remaining people) but I just thought I should post this. KoF '98 UM official site with neat stuff, including screenshots and the opening movie which confirms (oh my God) Orochi and Goenitz. It gets updated regularly.

I actually like KoF more than Street Fighter, but I'm more hyped for KoFXII.... high def sprites... finally.

KoF XII is definitely going to be awesome. I'm waiting to see Ash die miserably from the Orochi power after he steals it. That's going to be the most awesome thing.

What I hate about Ash is that he's prancing about, "OMG I'M STEALING POWERS" and not just from anybody, from some of my most favorite characters. It's also silly how he managed to kill Riot Blood Iori with no effort.

Well, what I hate about Freeman is that he's prancing about, "CRAWLLLLLINGGG IN MYYYY SKIN" and not just in any way, but in a most annoying way.

Of course, I would probably get completely destroyed now - back when I was playing a lot I was able to beat Grant and Kain with the difficulty set on 8, but only with Rock and Terry, and even then not every time.
This topic has inspired me to locate my a/v cable and dust off my dreamcast for a few matches though.

I know, but it is the one that I have. To make matters worse, all I have are standard Dreamcast controllers. After any sort of heavy playing of the game, my left thumb is cut to ribbons. Also, considering my DC is an antique, I'm never too fond of the uncanny impression it does of a weedeater engine while running Garou. Oh well.

I don't care for Athena's XII design at all. She is kind of porky and her face seems...really out of place in comparison with the other characters. I'm hoping Duck King keeps his spot on the roster. He's waited so long for it, and plus I like beating the snot out of people with him. The look on your opponent's face after you kick their ass using someone that claims to be the King of Ducks? Gold.

Assuming I can make it tonight, tonight will be the last night we use MAME for our ranbats. The Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator has been a fantastic program that has been used by #capcom since its creation some 3 or so years ago. Now, thanks to better technology and programming, it is safe to say that it is time to move on to a better program.
After tonight's Garou ranbats, we will be using the program nFBA (Neo Final Burn Alpha). This program supports everything MAME32k does, plus way more, including CPS-3 support (and runs all CPS3 roms better than the CPS3 mame does), more options (including 3 different DirectX ways to render your games), and less memory usage. On top of this, the emulator + netplay (the newest p2p client) provides smooth frame rates even across long distances, and it doesn't have the same outrageous delay that MAME sometimes has, providing a near "real-life" quality experience.
Fare thee well MAME, we knew thee well.
(However, if you want, you can keep MAME32k + our current p2p client, and direct nFBA (I'll post links later) to your MAME's ROM folder, just in case if you can't connect with nFBA for some reason to someone else (router issues).)

So, I just started getting into SF3, played it for the first time on Friday. Always fun being a decade late..
Anyway, man.. I SUCKED at first. Couldn't even beat the first match. I eventually worked my way up to the 7th or 8th match with Alex and Ibuki before I just started losing pretty quickly again.
What are some beginner-friendly characters? I'm so used to playing Alpha 3, so this game feels a lot different. Who would you guys recommend I use to get more comfortable with the game?
And oh yeah, naturally tried Ken and Ryu first. Man, I sucked with them.
EDIT: And also, SF4 better have at least one character from SF3. The roster has some real freaks, but some genuinely awesome ones too. Ibuki, Alex, Remy... Yan or whatever, Makoto..

Ken is basically top tier and is very easy to learn.
Just pick his SA3, as its the best because you can use more EX Moves (a move's button movement + two buttons (so an EX Hadoken is QCF + 2 punches) when you have a flashing super meter), and it rules. You can combo it from like.....EVERYTHING HE HAS. Ken rules basically.
Also the final boss is a bastard.

Anyone see the two new Tekken 6 characters? Alisa Boskonovitch and Lars Alexandersson?
Oh man.. Alisa looks like Dead or Alive trash and Lars looks like he escaped from an anime. I'm not liking their looks at all. Namco dropped the ball.
However, customizations are even more extensive now. For example, you can give any character the hairstyle of, well, any other character.
I saw Asuka with Jin's hair. That was pretty frightening.
The amount of detail in KoF12 characters is fucking staggering. The amount of animations as well! Holy.....

KOF12 looks great. I love how they finally made the sprites larger in relation to the screen. Some of the chars look kind of overly buff, however (terry + ralf).

Terry was never SF4 buff. His muscles are huge compared to all his 2d incarnations. I bet the look works for clark though.

the one who REALLY stands out is Robert. the dude is THIN AS SHIT in every single KOF and he is like as buff as Terry now. wtf?

Ash will be in forever. He is seriously one of the most popular characters over there, to the point that his projectile is used in the icon of the games now. (seriously, check the icon in the trailer man, the green thing is Ash Crimson's projectile move.)

but in Japan they are big on like metrosexual & homosexual guys like no other, so it isn't really surprising. i mean, they LOVE benimaru, and benimaru is the most homosexual character I have ever seen in a fighting game next to ZANGIEF. not that its a bad thing its just weird because he doesn't stand out at all as being COOL or even UNIQUE, he's just this PRETTY BOY WITH ELECTRICITY. i mean at least terry bogard has the unique abilities of engrish, able to shoot a basketball into a hoop from any distance, and able to tell the measurements of any woman at a glance.
benimaru is just PRETTY BOY WITH ELECTRICITY and Ash Crimson is like a more metrosexual possibly gay Kain R. Heinlein.

Marvel vs Capcom 2 is most likely coming to the PS2, PS3, and 360 (though prolly just the last 2, it saw a ps2 release...) theoretically with GGPO in it since Capcom has the license for it. (and because I read somewhere Alpha 2 and Alpha 3 is being re-released on consoles with it too, this seems like a GGPO-buffed release.)

It's also got a new thing in the ESRB for PS3 and 360, too, with a rating and all..so yeah..it's been played and tested. (same for Alpha 2 and Alpha 3, actually) (although A2 and A3 is for PS3 & PSP only as far as I can see)

This also makes a chance for MvC3 even more likely since Marvel is obviously willing to let them resell the game, and has mentioned they want to collab, so that's always a possibility.

btw, they also took the ESRB rating down entirely. Not just the 360/PS3 versions, it doesn't list the DC/PS2/XB rating either. So basically, they removed the entire MvC2 entry in an attempt to cover it up.

They probably won't enhance the sprites, it has taken them ages to make an HD Street Fighter 2, with a game that has 500x the moves and well over 5x the amount of characters, it could take a long long time.
It'll most likely be arcade perfect so no removing animations or anything. There's no reason for it NOT to be, considering it was perfect on the DC afaik, and the PS3/XB360 are more than powerful enough for it.

the graphics are pretty top notch for a 2-d fighter so I don't see why they would enhance the sprites. new music would be real nice though.
if they rebalanced it like they did sfhd that would be a fucking spectacle and everyone in the fighting game community would make like they were on a permanent sugar high.
